  1. I've been experimenting with the Harley Davidson site ride planner which can be found at this link. http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/Ride_Planner/Ride_Planner.jsp?locale=en_US I think it is very good. I find it easier to build a route in the HD planner than Mapsource. Once you have the Garmin communicator installed you can have the planner automatically find your Garmin GPS and transfer the route to the unit. It may work with other GPS brands but Garmin is the only one I have tried. Give it a try. I like it. Dennis
  2. Hi Guys, Bought a Garmin Nuvi 550, I currently have it hooked up with through the audio in/out. I want to be able to "Key" the mic so that when the GPS gives audible directions the "keying" of the mic will let the other riders hear whats being said along with me. When I key the mic now, I can't hear whats being said and nobody else can hear anything...... What am i doing wrong? I know it's possible as I think somebody else has it working from a group ride I was on last year.
  3. I'm looking to buy a street pilot 2720..have seen some good deals..Do any of you guys have them. Whats the pros and cons of this gps...The zumos are out of my price range..My next choice is the garmin 255w...Which way should i go? Dont need all the frills just a reliable gps...So many out there, it gets confusing...
  4. I don't usually write letters or post things like this but I have to this time. I purchased a Zumo 550 about 18 months ago and I've loved it. It's been great and done everything I could have wanted. A couple weeks ago I took a trip to Florida and on the trip I had my first problem. The unit locked up and I couldn't get it to do anything. I tried all the usual stuff like pulling the battery and doing a hard reset but nothing worked. When I got home I called Garmin for some help. We went through all the steps again and it was obvious I would have to send it in. The unit was out of warranty so I was just hoping it wouldn't cost too much. The Garmin rep. said she had heard of this happening before but it was very rare and she'd never heard of it with the Zumo. She said it was obvious I hadn't done anything wrong so she was going to cover the repair under warranty anyway. (I hadn't requested that, she just offered) I thanked her and sent it off last week. I expected to have a repaired unit some time around Christmas if I was lucky because of the season, vacations etc. I had no complaints because after all they were doing this for free when they didn't have to. When I got home yesterday I had a brand new unit waiting for me. They even loaded the most current version of maps so I don't have to purchase them. There and back in one week!! Over the holidays!!! FOR FREE!!!!! Now that's what I call customer service. The Zumo 550 is already the best bike GPS out there and with this type of service I have really become a loyal customer. With the differences in GPS systems becomming less and less, this is what will continue to keep Garmin as the leader. Just had to let you all know.
  5. Well, you all know how technically inept I am....so I need your advice, again. I want to get Gary a GPS for xmas. Walmart has a Garmin 3.5 Nuvi 200 on sale at Walmart on Black Friday for $97.00. We don't need anything more than the basics so I thought this might be ok for us. Problem is I hate shopping and refuse to stand in line at 3 am. Checked on ebay and get get the same thing for around $112.00 which beats standing in line. The only thing is they all say "refurbished". Have any of you ever bought refurbished and would this be a mistake? Thanks again for all you help!!
  6. Anyone using this model of GARMIN GPS? I have the chance to get a new one for $120. Before tossing the $$$ out I'd appreciate any honest feedback on this model. Regards.......Boomer
  7. Well I don’t know if you are suppose to get excited about these things but here goes. My Cell phone died on me so I had to replace it. I looked around and decided that I could use a smartphone because it would replace my Palm Pilot that I’ve used for many years and I’d only be carrying one device instead of two. This is where is gets exciting. I started looking at the iPhone but my carrier isn’t offering that one and I’m windows based. I still have a contract for another year and a bit. HTC has a new phone called the Touch Diamond. AWESOME. It has Windows Mobile 6.1 and Mobile Office. Now I can use Word, Excel and Powerpoint on my Phone. It also has WiFi which means I can check in here from any hotspot without using air time. Facebook and Youtube are very easy as well as e-mail. I can get a data plan so that I could use these anywhere but that gets expensive. Another cool part is what they call an accelerometer which allows the unit to know what position it is in. It will rotate the screen from portrait mode to landscape mode in any screen that I want to do that just by turning the unit. It is so sensitive that there is a game called Teeter which is like the old Labyrinth game (wooden box with two knobs and a maze with a steel ball). Gotta try it to believe it. Man I love technology! Now comes the main reason I’m excited. This thing as a GPS built in. Telus sells their navigation system as so many $ a month which is pretty good and the unit comes with Google Maps which uses data. BUT I got Garmin XT Mobile software which actually turns MY PHONE into a Garmin GPS. I can use MapSource to draw out a route on my PC and then upload it to the phone. I also tried TomTom which works very well but doesn't have the ability to work on the PC and upload to the phone. I liked some the TomTom day to day features but overall the Garmin works better for what I want to do with it. This gets even better. I’ve been using Ms Streets & Trips for years and am very comfortable with it. I just took a route that I used this past summer and transferred it using Babble to the MapSource software (amazingly easy) and then uploaded to my phone. It worked flawlessly. Bottom line. I now have a smartphone, contact manager (Outlook), Internet access, games, mp3 player, mini computer, AND a Garmin GPS in my pocket. WOW!!! Oh and I can even use it as a level. Wayne
  8. Just like to know where the best place would be to get a Garmin 450 GPS.
  9. Friend of mine recently bought a refurb off e-bay. Seems like a pretty good unit. Normally sells for around $300 if I remember right and they are selling them for $110 + free shipping. I got to check it out while riding and works pretty well. One question I have about this unit or any GPS for that matter is say I want to go from Indy to South Dakota, but want to take specific roads, can I program the GPS to go only on the roads I want to go on instead of having the GPS pick the route for you? I see they have the Quest2 now also. Garmin lists it for $750.00. The same place on e-bay sells the refurb for $185 if I remember right. Garmin didn't have the price listed on just the Quest. I was reading all the stuff on the Garmin web-site, but for things like what I am asking, its' all greek to me. Thanks.
  10. Geez, I tried every trick in the book to get this unit to boot up but it's dead. Check out how many folks have had the same trouble as me! 44 pages of the same thing! http://www.zumoforums.com/index.php?topic=339.0 There is a definite problem with these units. Good news is that Garmin support has been very good with me and it looks like they will make it right. Hopefully, I will be able to find danob11 and Bummer tomorrow since I'm "blind"!
  11. Looking to buy 2009 map upgrade for my street pilot 2610. Has anyone upgraded their Garmin ? Is there a place to buy the maps at discount pricing? Regards Dave
  12. I'm not looking for a can of worms, but need the opinion of the people that know. I can buy a Garmin Zumo 450, for the same price as a TomTom Rider 2nd edition. I need to know the advantages and shortcomings if anyone has that info. I may go to a Zumo 550, but it seems to me that the TomTom has it all covered. Thanks Carl
  13. I just ordered a Garmin Streetpilot 2720 with ram mount, and I’m thinking to hardwire it or use the power outlet from my bike…but I’m also thinking can you connect it to your audio system so you can hear the directions thru your speakers or is the original speaker loud enough to hear the directions when you ride. Can't wait to install everything.
  14. Question: I just ordered a Garmin C330, GPS --- Need information as to Which Mounting system is the best to go with ?? for the 1st Gen. Any Opinions ??? I'm all Ears for once !!
  15. If anyone needs another mount for anything. Check this place out. http://www.CustomMounts.com/ They have decent prices. I needed another garmin mount for a bike and they have them in stock for the Zumo series.
  16. I just wanted to let everyone here know that I have my Garmin 450 on Ebay. Just like the posting says, it's in perfect condition, used last spring break on a 1000mi San Francisco trip and a few times in the car around town. The unit also comes with a car kit with car power chord, and a 2gb Sandisk high speed SD card. If anyone has any questions please let me know. Item # is :160265176054 Link (I hope) is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160265176054&ssPageName=ADME:L:LCA:US:1123.
  17. Anyone know how and where to get the Buddyrich cable that connects your Garmin Zumo 550 microphone to your headset wiring? I have seen threads talking about a Buddyrich cable, but I'm not sure where to get one and how much they are. Please help.
  18. If your heading out on vacation and say O I almost forgot to upgrade Garmin to 09 map forget it. Depending when you bought your unit you may be eligible for free upgrade to 09 map or you may just be buying it. Point is, it takes anywhere from 2 to 4+ hours to download depending on your computer. This is also assuming you have high speed internet. Longest download I ever did. I also want to say that if you purchase a Garmin on e-bay or any auction site Garmin will NOT honor warranty. There are some good prices on line and they state full warranty but not true. Garmin states this on warranty paper in box.
  19. Just a short note. I posted this info on the other forum I participate in, so for some of you this may be a repeat/you already knew this. There are several POI files you can add to your Garmin, TomTom, and Magellan GPS units. POI files are Points Of Interest. I found a good source of these files here: http://www.poi-factory.com/ You can add such things as all the USA Yamaha Dealers, Wal-Marts, Starbucks, Campgrounds, Festivals, Radio Stations Frequencies in your area, Lighthouses, Antique Stores, Scanner Freqs or Amateur Radio Repeaters, Cemeteries, Golf Courses, Nightclubs...whatever. Most of these files are free, but a few (like redlight camera locations) require a small 'donation'... I loaded over 30,000 POI's into my 2 Garmin NUVI's, and this is in addition to the Members names that we got a while back, from, Pilot, I believe, if memory serves. For the Garmin, its simply a matter of downloading a free POI loader, then installing that on your computer, then hooking up the Garmin to your computer via the USB cable, then downloading the POI files that you want. Magellan and TomTom have similar procedures, but MAY involve an extra step or two. Pretty slick and now I can get addresses, phone numbers, and locations of thousands of places, and businesses, that are not included in the stock POI file included with the Garmin. This Venture website is full of members who like to modify or tweak these bikes...you can do the same with a GPS. Have fun!
  20. Hi Guys, I just bought a ZUMO 550 and I remember reading a post in here that a Venture member makes this special cable that hooks into the audio system to use with ZUMO 550.....not sure who that member is? Can anyone help? Thanks, PAUL http://www.windows-xp-update.com
  21. I had a 2610 Gps mounted on a 05' Kawasaki Nomad I would now like to mount it on a 1987 Venture Royale. Does anyone have pictures of a Garmin 2610 mounted on a early Venture? I used a RAM mount which I placed in the center of the Kawasaki handlebars but the Venture does not give me that option. Thanks in advance Dave

  23. Has anyone installed their Garmin GXM-30 under their front fairing? Results?
  24. I apologize if this has all been covered before. I have partial answers but not the whole thing... I have an XM and a Garmin (I know - should've had the Zumo with the built in XM - but the Nuvi 350 was free). I would like to run the audio from the XM through the aux on the back of the cassette. I think I can handle that part. My tunes would then play through the dash. Ideally, I would like to run the audio from the Garmin through the 5 pin headset line. How can I tap into that? Lastly, what is a tidy way of running switched power to both of these devices? Thank you in advance!
  25. here's a Forecast on the upcomming new Garmin Nuvi 250 ... It seems they did this for you ... http://garmin.de/strasse/produktbeschreibung/nuevi_250/
