  1. I've put a total of 140,000 miles on 2 different Gen II ventures and made an interesting discovery at deals gap 3 yrs ago. I had Metzler 880's on my 2000 Venture and knew that I would probably replace them after the trip. The center flat spot was getting to annoy me when turning. But after spending the best part of 2 days running up and down deals Gap the edge was gone. I had a better trip back to Ohio than the trip down! So what I have learned is that when the tires get flat spotted from the TOO MANY highway miles I ride that all I need to do is find a nice big blacktop lot [preferrably new sharpe black top].....I run about a 25-30 mph nice lazy figure eight and run about 20 minutes or so with some cutting tight enough to put some pressure on the tires but not enough to get scary and you will be very surprised when that annoying little step is gone! 2. A few months ago I ordered a set of Barons Bag Slash for my '08 RSTD. I enjoy the sound of them I'm only having one problem. When they shipped the pipes to me they sent the wrong size exhaust clamps. They were stainless and not big enough to cover the gap where the slip on ends and the bare pipe below shows. I called them and they said they would ship the clamps to me. After waiting 2 months the clamps arrived they are the right diameter just still way to narrow to cover the gap. I'm tired of dealing with them. I have a friend with a 04 Venture and his pipes came with some wide chrom clamps. Does anyone know where I can get a set of the wide chorme exhaust clamps. Thanks to all!
  3. I know this is a dumb question but here goes. I own an 83 VR, about to change the plugs and can't find what to set the gap to any help would be appericated. Also my headlight fuse blew and when I went to change it the holder was brittle and broke, I rigged it for now but need a replacement, probally the whole panel. Anybody got one or know where to find one. Thanks everyone.
  4. My friend of 30 yrs just traded his wing for a new venture. Is there a bolt on backrest like the old Markland available. The only ones he can find are the one's that you have to buy a new seat with a gap in it for the rest.
  5. If you all will indulge me for a moment, I’d like to relate the latest entry in the Autopilot’s journal. Spent a few days in the mountains with my wife, celebrating 40 years together. Hard to imagine, sometimes. We did more stuff right by accident, than most do on purpose. Praise the Lord for that, ‘cause I sure didn’t have anything to do with it! Well, moving right along…I will likely draw some barbs for this but we were in the vicinity of Deals Gap and didn’t take the bikes on this trip. Given the road and driveway going to the cabin, it’s probably just as well that I didn’t bring them. I’m not sure I could have gotten the truck & trailer to the cabin from the road. Even if I could have, I’m not at all sure I could have negotiated that rutted up, washed out, rock, mud & gravel imitation of a driveway with either of the bikes. One side was literally 500-800 feet down the side of the mountain, if I dumped the bike, we both would be toast. It would be a month before anyone could find us, assuming they even knew where to look. I had nothing to do with renting the place and these little tidbits of information had not been clearly disclosed prior to our arrival. Needless to say, if I had arrived with my full-sized pickup with motorcycle trailer in tow, I would have been one un-happy camper. Now, the major secondary roads (129, 143, 28, 19, 74) in & around Robbinsville, NC, on the other hand, were phenomenal and I most definitely plan to go back with the bike(s) for them. I won’t be staying at this particular place though, you can be sure. Heck, I had to do a 3 point turn with my wife’s Ford Escape, as small as IT is, to get in or out of the driveway in one direction. Couldn’t do the Tail of the Dragon the day we drove over there. It was closed most of the day due to a fatal trike crash. 67 year old guy from Arkansas died when he drove off the mountain around mile 4. I was told that someone was taking pictures and he turned and waved to them. In just that bit of time he lost his bearings, lost control and that was it. The Dragon had claimed yet another. Prayers up, for the family. On a brighter note, I saw a couple of 2nd gen. Ventures up that way. One was a silver over (bronze?) They were 2 up on the Cherohala Skyway, headed toward Robbinsville. (I vaguely remember someone in the forum talking about going up there and having a bike that color, but I couldn’t find the post when I got back) The other was a blue over black….can’t remember exactly where I saw that one. (Think it was on 129 going to Deals Gap) I thought I saw a silver Venture, but I just had a glimpse and can’t be sure. Up there, even cagers have to pay attention to driving! These sightings would have been in the 6/21-6/24 time frame. The downside is that I ONLY saw those couple of Ventures. I’ve never seen so many Harleys in my life. They were everywhere! I was relaxing on a bench in Bryson city after lunch one afternoon, while the wife did a little shopping and spoke with 3 couples on H-Ds from Michigan. (Harley has a gorgeous black cherry color) So, that was our little mini vacation and 40th Anniversary, at least those are the main points . Not much to mark forty years, as celebrations go, but the fact that we made it this long seems to be an accomplishment, these days! One thing for sure....Me and a bike will be back! Ain't love grand?
  6. I like how it looks but there is about 1/4 inch or less gap without the windshield. Just wondering if anyone had a poor man tip on getting rid of the gap. Thanks for your time ! Jon
  7. I have had this gap for a while and do not know the whole cause of it. This gap is on both sides but this side is larger. The top pins have broken off on both side covers an I feel that what ever is causing the gap has something to do with it. The other pic (3068) is me lifting on the side cover, most of the gap disappears. What do y'all think?
  8. http://web.mac.com/bradandbeth/for_sale/Home.html April Fools day is over.
  9. Yesterday I finally got around to re-packing my Bub mufflers. When I did the HD fishtail mod I found that all of the original packing had long gone and with the new tips there was now a 1/4" gap all around the rear baffle plate. I found this packing on e-bay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/20-x-38-MOTORCYCLE-EXHAUST-MUFFLER-PACKING-WRAP_W0QQitemZ140148216528QQihZ004QQcategoryZ35573QQcmdZViewItem I pulled the baffles back out and I was able to use 1/2 of a sheet and get about 3 wraps on each baffle. I used some high heat RTV silicone to fill the gap left around the rear baffle plate. The muffs now have a deeper tone and are a lot quieter when cruising but still sound good when getting on the throttle. Here's a link to the post about the HD fishtail install. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=114428#post114428
  10. Because I have seen several reports here lately about coil failures, I went searching for an easy way to test the ignition coils on our bikes. I found and ordered a Motion Pro ignition tester and it came in this week. According to our service manual for the RSV, the minimum spark gap for a good ignition spark is 8mm (.031). Now you could pull a plug, use a known good plug and test the spark but that really doesn't give a good indication of the strength of the coils. This device allows you to check the strength of the coils without pulling the plugs and the gap is adjustable so you can increase it to see how strong that spark is. You can also easily see the color of the spark. I tested it early this morning and found that it is easy to use and works very well. Just thought I would pass it on. It is inexpensive and I think it will be a great diagnostic tool. http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/tools/ignition_system_tester
