  1. Hi folks, we just got back from another road trip and on the second day out, found ourselves in one of those cliff hanger rides on the back roads, where your GPS says there is a gas station, but it's no longer there and the 'next' one is erhm beyond your range.. Tempting fate we continued on with few options on this long stretch of back roads.. By the time we got to a gas station, we were on fumes.. The F counter showed 23.7 Miles, and we pumped in 4.8 Gallons of fuel into the empty tanks.. that means we had what, .2 gallons left sloshing around? I had always been curious to know just how far I could go on reserve, and I just found out.. At least now I know.. To be honest, it actually gave me more confidence to ride the tank lower than I normally would... What if we had run out of fuel? Well the emergency plan was that since my bike burns slightly more fuel than my buddy, we would have pulled the hose off at the petcock and drained what ever I had left into an empty drink container and put that fuel into my buddy's bike and see how far he could go on it.. prolly a few more miles further and closer to a gas station etc.. and he would come back with some fuel to get me there as well.. (contingency plans abound....) What's the lowest you got your tank down to? T
  2. With my girlfriend starting a new temp job last night and 47 degree celcius temperatures (with humidity) it was best to stay inside and enjoy the air conditioning. What else to do but something bike related. :-) I put together the following chart based on my experiences, Yamaha specs, magazine articles, and member experiences. The figures are based on a "stock" RSV with normal fuel tank and un-corrected odometer. I've also taken into consideration what the "real" main tank capacity differences are from spec (0.5 U.S. gallons) in calculating maximum distance and "real" total fuel capacity. Some numbers don't total up due to rounding. I've wondered just how far I can go on a tank of fuel, or gotten to the point where I was wondering if I could make it to the next gas station before I ran out of fuel and would have to walk. Hopefully this table is helpful to others. NOTE - "Low Fuel distance travelled" counter comes on at inconsistent points because of leaning the bike into a corner when you are low on fuel. Once it starts the count down it stays on. The low fuel indicator light goes on and off depending on the lean of the bike.
  3. I have a 2006 RSV with 35,000 miles. I have had an on again off again problem with trying to start the bike. I will go out to start my bike, I pull the choke, turn the key on and I will NOT hear the fuel pump. The bike will fire and start but never make it to a fast idol. The funny part about this is 2 hours later I come back flip the key and I will hear the fuel pump engage right away. The first time I noticed was after a good wash. After a day of sitting I got the bike running, turned the hose on, and sprayed down the engine with water like it was on fire. NOTHING.....did not choke, spit, sputter or die....kept running like there was never a problem. This morning I went out to start the bike to ride to work. The bike sat in the garage for two days (rained all weekend) and had not run since Friday. The bike was a dry as dry gets. I pull the choke, turn the key on, and NO noise from the fuel pump. The bike cranks, fires, and starts but stays at a low RPM. Slowly the bike chugs out and dies. I placed my hand on all for exhaust pipes and all four were hot. I have thought for a while I either have fuel pump or fuel pump relay issues. Any thoughts??
  4. I'm looking for a handle for the fuel petcock, screw vibrated loose and lost the handle. Fortunately the fuel is in the on position. does anyone have one lying around? Mike Smegielski Waterbury CT
  5. After tracing some electrical grimlins associated with the TCI, I am now not able to get any fuel pressure nor any clicking. I checked the fuel pump for conductivity and it has none. I also checked the 85 bike fuel pump for conductivity and it does have conductivity, so it appears my 83 is open. I have even run 12 volts to the fuel pump and it will not do anything. So, does anyone out there have a spare fuel pump laying around? I may take the one off the 85, but my son is currently working thru some carb problems on it and I hate to do that unless I have to. I checked ebay and there are not any "good" deals that are not "Buy it now" and I hate to do that. I appreciate any help. RandyA
  6. I've read some posts about fuel mileage, but didn't find the answers I need. Brand new, '09 TD, less than 600 miles. Crappy fuel mileage. I know the odometers are off, so that means I am getting 30 and less mpg. What if anything can I do, or tell the tech to do at the first service? We've got a 1000 mile/24 hr CVMA ride the first week of Aug. I need to better the mpgs by then if possible. Thanks for any and all help. I like this bike much better than my '07 R*, and know that I will never be able to match that fuel mileage. I just want to get it in the range of high 30's, low 40's. Thanks much, Eric Robbins
  7. Got a question about the fuel tank on my '91 VR. The problem is I don't have the owner's manual. I'm rather anal about performance and I'd really like to know what I'm getting for fuel mileage. To do that I need to keep an accurate tally of how many gallons I pump, but I can't do that if I don't know when the tank is actually "Full." For example, I can "fill up," stop pumping, and then watch the fuel level drop slowly. Another squirt and I get the same thing. I know there is an over flow tank involved here, but I have no idea when to stop pumping gas. FWIW, I filled up last night and the bike is getting approximately (Oh how I HATE that word....) 33 MPG around town. This is riding 2-up with a Voyager Kit.... Any help will be greatly appreciated
  8. I know that it has been discussed a lot and I have been searching reading through past post to see what I can find as well. My bike(97 Royal Star Tour Classic with 35K miles) has the Barons Big Air Kit installed: http://www.baronscustom.com/catalog/display/254/ ,....along with Barons Nasty Boys Exhaust. It runs Strong, Sounds great, but I only get about 32-34 MPG with it,..No matter how I drive it. This seems very low compared to what I have been reading in past post's. I have new plugs, run synthetic oil, have had the carbs synced at an idle (they needed it), but still have no improvements. Would the bigger jets in the Barons Kit make for the poor fuel economy? I would consider different jets if it would bring me closer to the 40 MPG mark. I called Barons today and they were no help at all,.. Any input would be appreciated,. Its just a bummer to have to fuel up every 125 miles when the others that we ride with can go 200 miles on a tank with their v-twins.
  9. my fuel pump went out the other day took pump off connect the two lines got it home no problem. i am going to buy a MR gasket fuel pump will the connector work or do i need to cut and splice the old plug on to it? thanks
  10. This is a long story: I want to start by saying that I have been getting worse and worse MPG's lately. I used to get about 42mpg and am now down to about 30. I have changed plugs, oil, filters and have done a carb sync at idle and at higher rpm's. I have also tried ethonal free gas and nothing seems to help. Okay, yesterday I changed the fuel filter although it probably didn't need it. Today I started my bike with no problem and rode it to work without any issues.(15 miles) I came out of work this evening and when I walked up to my bike I could smell gas. I pulled out the choke and turned the key. I could hear the fuel pump trying to get gas but it kept running and my yellow light that usually lights up during the fuel pump prime wouldn't come on. I pressed the starter and the bike wouldn't start and the bike acted like the battery was dead. I tried this 3 times and got the same thing each time. Just for the heck of it I turned the petcock to reserve and tried again. The fuel pump sucked up the gas and the bike started right up. My first reaction was that I was leaking gas and was almost out. I drove to the closest gas station and while doing so I slid the petcock to on while riding. Within a minute the bike was starving for fuel so back to reserve I went. The bike smoothed out. When I got to the gas station and filled up I was amazed when it only took a little less than 3 gallons which would mean that I wasn't any where near reserve. Once the bike was filled I put the petcock back to the on position and the bike started right up and ran fine all the way home.(15 miles). However my wife just told me that the garage smells like gas....Any ideas
  11. :confused24:My 83 boggs and looses RPM on the high side. Starts amd runs great below 3000. Over that she boggs out. New wires and fuel fileter and plugs. I hooked a timing light to each plug wire and all are firing. fresh fuel and even some sea foam. I can feel the fuel pump pulseing. I can only get one carb drain screw out, the rest are all rounded off.(dam philips heads) Any Idea's would me much appreciated frank
  12. Do yourself a favor... If you have 2 bars showing, your in the fuel countdown mode, and, your approaching a steep hill with cagers on your six... switch to reserve immediately... I found this out on my way to MD today... luckily the cagers weren't riding my six... took a half a mile going up hill for the reserve to kick in... food for thought... On the flat you can run without flipping to reserve well below one bar...
  13. When is a good time for the fuel pump to fail? Answer 1: Never Answer 2: While at the dealership with warranty in force, pump on the parts shelf, and a waiting mechanic. Answer 3: While idling in the garage before heading out for a ride. I'll take answer number 3. I was just going to take a nice little ride past Devil's tower. Checked tire pressures, cleaned windshield, started the bike and let her idle while I called the wife, (she was in town with the grand-kids), when I heard the idle RPM fall off substantially and then the engine died. Ended the phone call and went to see what was wrong with our ever reliable RSV. The bike would just barely start with full choke...hmmm, not good. Further troubleshooting revealed an intermittent fuel pump. Thanks to this website and the many helpful and knowledgeable folks here, my wife, (remember she was in town with the grand-kids), is now on her way home with a Mr Gasket #42S fuel pump and fittings. So, God willing, we'll have a new fuel pump on the RSV later tonight! I'd like to say a special thanks to Ponch for his 9/2/09 post with photos of the Mr Gasket fuel pump and fittings. Your photos made it very easy to explain to my wife and auto-parts guy exactly what was needed. I disassembled the electrical side of the RSV fuel pump. These things use plunger activated contacts to energize the two solenoid coils that move the plunger, (armature), that pumps the fuel. The contacts on my pump are shot and no amount of cleaning has made the pump reliable. After examining the stock fuel pump, I would say that these things ought to be replaced at 35,000 to 40,000 miles to ensure reliable operation. Our bike has 43,920 miles. Chalk up another save to Ventureider.com!
  14. On a road trip. Smell raw fuel more at idle. Bike runs well, I think, at highway speed. Idle is not right. gas milage down to maybe 30. I did about 400.miles yestetday. This AM before start up, I removed left side cover. I discovered fuel droplets on the screw just below what I would call the throttle shaft spring. I took a picture but I tried to upload and I was unable to upload the picture. I am typing with a touch screen smart phone please excuse any typos Any thoughts on what I am dealing with, stuck or misadjusted float ? Appreciate the help. Point of reference . There is a screw above the on where fuel is a accumulating and one below. The screw above is much larger.
  15. Been talkin to a mechanic friend of mine that owns a Stihl/Gravely/Snapper shop. Customer came in and had to buy a new caberator. His had sat over the winter and you could see where the inside of his carb had been etched by corrosion. The float had this greenish black crud all over it and the carb in general was unsalvageable. Although the carb was only $40, Ed said it could have been averted by following these easy rules: Don't let your gas sit in anything for more than two weeks un-treated (stabel for ethanol). When storing 1. Run machine completely out of fuel 3. Fill fuel line with Seafoam. You can buy a three pack of empty 6 oz. thin neck plastic bottles that you can fill, to squirt the seafoam in the fuel line. 4. Try to start (ensures seafoam has completely filled your fuel pump and carbs). I also had to buy a carb for my garden tiller two years ago as the same thing hapened to it. I intend on using this "no gas" method in the futrure. Just wanted to pass it along for your consideration.
  16. i have put 1200 miles on this new to me bike without any problems. The last few rides it has gotten over 60 fareheit and I have been smelling fuel. i know this is not normal because one goldiwng I had smelled like that but yet no other bike except for this one have this problem. I checke dthe vent tube in front, fuel cap is on, No visible leaks. I have sat down watching carefully while reving the throttle and no leaks. This is a bit disturbing because I start smelling like fuel. Any ideas??
  17. In the Texas panhandle, I was lucky to get 30mpg on my 99 RSV, but here Kentucky Im averaging in the high 30's with a new high of 39mpg on today's fill up. It's the first time I've ever ridden the bike 200 miles on the same tank of fuel. Maybe it's finally broken in with 101,700 miles on it. About this time last year, I was complaining about not getting 160 miles to a tank of fuel!!
  18. Hey, I am having trouble with the fuel gauge. The sender has been replaced. Currently the tank has done 24 miles since full, and the resistance across the sender is 60 Ohms. So all correct there. The wires from the CMU to the sender both have continuity, and, when connected, the hot (Green/White) side is reading just over 5V. Yesterday I removed the CMU and resoldered a few joints, but mainly it looked to be in very good shape. When I got this bike just about every warning light remained on, and we are now down just to the fuel gauge. Could someone check for me what the voltage should be if when the gauge is displaying correctly, because what I am left with appears to be needing a new CMU. If we have any really, really well informed readers, who know which parts of the CMU control the gas gauge, then I could investigate the precise path in the CMU. There is some small, intermittent fault here as I have, on a couple of occasions, seen the gauge work, or at least try to with the gas pump icon out, and one or two bars on the gauge. Thanks.
  19. The fuel pressure switch sends constant voltage to the fuel pump relay on my bike. I can see this when the pressure is low but when pressure is achived I stll get 10.2 volts up to the relay ?????? is this normal ????? The relay will close when it gets 10.9 volts or higher. I guess I am just wondering if I need to change it or not. Or just let the pump run full time LOL.... Any help would be appreicated...
  20. I filled my tank up a few days back and have been riding back and forth to work in the rare Scottish sunshine, on my way home yesterday I noticed the fuel gauge dip and the "F" count begin, I anly had 78 miles since brimming her . Now I am riding solo and doing anywhere from 55 to 90 mph (mostly above 70 ) so it looks like I'll be lucky to get 100 miles to the tank before empty, unless I bumble around at 55 all day . However I never had any "Low fuel warning light appear" is this only on the Venture model as I can't see a low fuel light on the consol ? Cheers.
  21. Okay here is the story; Bike has been in the shop for several weeks 38 days to be exact, getting Ma Yamaha to finally fix the over heating issue which as we thought here back in January/Febuary that it was a bad head gasket. Okay they finally get it all back together and the service manager calls me to tell me it is not running good. Says running great on side stand, 1st and 2nd gear runs out fine but 3rd and up it acts as if it is starving for fuel. They are checking the vacuum lines, I told them to check the filter for clogs, and to check for contaminated fuel as it is the 10% ethanol that has been sitting in the tank. I researched here and that seems to be the normal advice, (I had a similar issue on my 03 VTX which was a fuel pump bike also and Turned out it was a clogged fuel filter. Would run fine the for no apparent reason it would shut down. It only did this if the bike was low on fuel. I first changed it over to a gravity feed system but that did not help, changed out the filter and that fixed it. I had put a new filter on and apparently it did not flow as well as the oem.) So can anyone here think of any other reasons that this may be occurring? I had recently sync'd the carbs, and was in the process of fine tuning the pilot's as I had put new pipes on the bike and it was running lean. but I don't think any of that would cause it to shut down like it is doing. Thanks
  22. Hello, Looking for some input from all you knowledgeable Venture riders. My 2003 RSV has just turned over 95,000 km. Last year I put on Barons Bag Slash pipes - was told no need to re-jet, so I didn't. Prior to this I had noticed a slight reduction in fuel economy but nothing I worried about...but it continued to worsen to the point of only getting about 300 km to a tank, some days 269, depending on the riding I was doing. No backfiring or performance issues noted. I put back the stock pipes this year and am on my second or third tank of gas after storage for the winter. The plugs were replaced prior to winter storage. While in storage I cleaned and re-oiled both K&N filters. I went through 15 litres of fuel going about 169 km on the way to work at speeds around 120 - 130 km/h. On the way home, I went through 11.4 litres of fuel for about 159 km on the way home travelling more like 130-140 km/h. I rode faster home, which is predmonintley up hill and went through less fuel on the way home than I did going downhill to work. So, doing the math, I got about 26.58 mpg on the way to work (downhill and in the sunshine) and 32.73 mpg on the way home (raining in part of the way, going uphill and faster after through the rain. These are far cries from 40 to 50 mpg spec'ed. I popped in to one shop....they are going to go through the Yamaha update manuals. Initially, they thought maybe I oiled the air filters too much and perhaps some of the oil plugged up the K&N's. (I did give them a good amount of oil, but didn't think it was excessive-like no puddles or dripping) I called a Yammy shop and they quoted the new estimated fuel economy saying I should be getting 51 mpg and should consider a carburetor rebuild. One other knowledgeable colleague of mine seconded that opinion. (additional question - what has changed to give such a difference in estimated fuel economy? 42 mpg to 51. Are the carbs the same? If not, can the 03 be rebuilt to the same specs as the 2011?) So, I am throwing it out there for your learned opinions. I will try some seafoam tomorrow after my night shift - can't hurt... $19 on the way to work, $17 on the way home foe 370 km...for economy, I may as well drive my Ford Escape, the way it is now. Thanks for your guidance.
  23. For those of us in the upper midwest/great lakes region- I noticed Techron brand fuel system cleaner is on sale at Fleet Farm. Ordinarily $5.95/12oz bottle- on sale at $2.50. Be a good time to bulk up on it if you're so inclined...
  24. Now and then I see"low fuel light" mentioned. I have a 1999 venture with no such creature. I even walked once and nothing. Do all ventures have them or does mine just not work. If mine doesn't work, does anyone have any ideas where I might start to get one. Thanks Richard
  25. Sometimes students come into my class and I'm sure even they don't know what they been smoking. BUT have you ever had conversations with a pair of gurus who KNOW what they been smoking? I'm posting up the latter part of conversations I've had with them. If you're a guru (who knows what they are smoking) what would you say? Have to figure out if it is electrical or fuel issues. New plugs, ride it, and then look at them. Running hot or fouling. Rough in low rpms? does it clear when you get it going? Rough all the way through? Then you think about what to start looking for. Good answer eh Also it would be interesting to note whether or not the plugs are firing inside the engine. You'll have to go for another ride to here to find that out. Also, did you remove the ignition wires when you changed the motor, so are the wires going to the right plugs from the right coils. Still need to know what kind of ignition wires you have,,, copper or carbon? The other thing could be that the boots under the carbs are not seated properly, they may have come off after you put them on properly,, it happens,,,, that would give false air into the cylinders and also throw off a carb tune, and so you would have the same symptoms that you have now. Carbtune done with Tuckett's unit, with Tuckett watching, I've done it a dozen times myself too. Wires are copper, not carbon. Wires were not removed during this engine swap. Regardless, I know which wires go where. Carbs are seated properly on the boots. I've taken the carbs off the bike every winter as part of my normal cleanup, with last winter being a total rebuild, ran good. On reinstallation for one of those times I didn't get them seated properly on the boots and noticed that fact by how it ran before I got to the corner stop sign, black smoke, that is not the problem this time. I'm concluding it's a fuel delivery issue. How about you? Plugs removed looking a very little bit white ...too lean a mixture? If it were my bike sitting here, I would check all the plug wires to make sure they are firing properly,,, just to rule that out,,, buuttt too lean a mixture will also give you problems but then it would tend to bog out when you twist the throttle,, which I don't think it does. Some more questions then: Do you need a choke for a cold start? Does it run better with the choke partially closed? Did you replace the fuel filter? A far out question,,,, are you sure it's a 1300 engine? Something that's interesting is the way it starts and takes off, doesn't seem to be any problems there. Post it up, and see if anybody else has better ideas. Carl some more answers then... I need choke for a cold start, same as always, between a quarter and half of the lever. I does not run better at partial choke. Fuel filter gets replaced with every rear tire change. The Pinwall Cycle video shows the bike coming in was a MkII with '89 colours. The engine that I picked up had all the 1300 badging on the side covers. I'm still stuck on ignition. When I sprayed WD40 into the intakes, it didn't change anything. So if the fuel delivery was on the low side or none at all, it should have smoothed out, if the fuel was rich it would have started bogging down, that's why I would think ignition, and I would like to see if those plugs are firing under load. Did you do a compression test on this engine, if it's low in a couple of cylinders, it would also present the same symptoms. I'll tell ya'll what I say.....if I start caring more about what an engine looks like than how it runs, I must be gettin ready to ride a 2nd gen...OH WHAT HATH BECOME ME!
