  1. I want to know what the most travel I need between my front fender and anything above it?? I was working on a mount for my air horn under the light extension bracket.
  2. Folks, (On Kevin's recommendation below, let's call it: Right Front Turn Signal) My 84VR MKI had an unfortunate "garage crash" the other day for no apparent reason (aside from the sudden escape of front fork air). I had a 1x4 under the side stand (so she doesn't lean so much). I'm getting ready to replace the tires, and she'd been sitting for a couple of days since our last ride. So when I say "for no aparent reason" I mean I bent down to see just how bad the tread was on the front (cracks between the tread), and as soon as I tapped on the tire, the front end dropped 3-4 inches (air pressure had dropped to zero while she was sitting-obviously another issue), and because she had that 1x4 under the side stand, she dumped over on the right side, and crashed against a ladder hanging on a rack. The impact cracked the lens cover on the driving light, and the right mirror post. So getting on with my question: I've searched all of the service and parts manuals and can't find anything about a replacement lens. The only reference I've been able to find is a diagram calling out "driving light" ... with no parts breakdown or service procedure. So I don't know if the lens is available, or if I'm looking at replacing the whole light. Either way - no part numbers are called out. Is there a part number for the lens? And where can I find a replacement? Anybody got a used one they're willing to sell? Would also like to replace the mirror - although I can live with it for now. Any input is much appreciated.
  3. My front wheel bearings disintegrated and wormed out my front wheel. I bought new bearings but when I removed the old bearings the wheel and sleeve were worn and wormed out. So I guess I will have to replace the wheel. Anyone have any ideas besides the dealer. I do not know what they cost but I do know there are cheper places than the dealer. Thanks Quicksilver Thanks guys for all the info and quick to. this is the best source of info on the net. Thank all of you again Quicksilver
  4. VR photo front page Gopro facebook page any of our members?
  5. well took the bike out today made it about 6 miles. started to slow down. then i stopped and could not move. didnt bring any tools with me that was stupid. stuck on one of the busiest street in town. cant move. cop didnt even stop. a homeowner let me use his small socket set to bleed the linked brake front caliper. then i could move how can you tell how full the reservoir is supposed to be. i think it was to full and expanded putting on the brakes or am i missing something. flushed and rebuilt all parts made sure all holes were open dont know how to check amount of fluid. filled till full.
  6. Just got my RSV back from the shop where they did some front end work,i now have a Avon cobra in the front and a Avon Venom on the rear. The dealer said the bike should run ok with that combo, it drove home ok. Has anybody ran a radail in the front and a bais in the rear? They will put on a Venom if i want one.
  7. I am replacing my Venom rear tire right now, it only had about 13K miles on it. I'm also running a Venom front. What kind of miles is everyone getting from their Venoms? I'm disappointed with the mileage on the rear. I'd like to run something with some tread in the center of the tire so wear will be more apparent. I'm thinking of switching to a different rear. What other tires work well with the Venom front?
  8. I can't seem to find anyone who carries the front brake lever switch anymore, does anyone know where I can find 1 for my 86 VR. Tom
  9. 10. Was looking at this at 7 am there where 3 bikes in front of bobs . http://rapidcityjournal.com/webcams/sturgis-street/ Now look OMG
  11. I've decided to fix the Broom, so I'm looking for stock parts for a 99 RSV that you may have in your garage. I need handlebars, windshield right front fork, .........and other assorted goodies. Last Sunday, for some unknown reason, I grabbed the front brake going into a left turn. Locked it up, skidded accross the road and landed upside down. Go figure, the weekend before I drove 500 miles to Gettysburg and back without incident, this happened 25 miles from home. Just had routine maintenance done by Earl, aka SkyDoc, and he did a great job! There wasn't one leak or drip when it was upside down or even after being righted! Hope it will be on the road in time for Oberlin, so I can get those pretty pinstripes back. http://s1133.photobucket.com/albums/m583/MaryJo44/Broom%20crash/?albumview=slideshow&track=share_email_album_view_click
  12. I'm on the road in TX for work and need to replace my rear tire on 2001 2nd Gen RSV. Have Avon Venom on both front and rear now. The mechanic I talked to said both Dunlop and Avon are not showing front tires listed for the stock size. Just want to make sure I got my factys straight: Avon Venom Front: AM41 150/80HB-16 Avon Venom Rear: AM42 150/90B-15 Dunlop E3 Front: 150/80-16 Dunlop E3 Rear: MV85B15 Also - the trunk lower locking mechanism mounts all broke on the way out here. These are the mounts that are part of the lower trunk molding. Don't think glue/pvc cement with be strong enough. Anyone else run into this happening? Only thing outside of a new lower trunk I can think of is to fabricate a brace coming from the lower trunk mount bolts. Appreciate any help - MnM
  13. I changed out my rear tire this week after 11,200 miles, and it was the poorest performance on a rear tire I've had in 4 years. I'm a big fan of the ME880, and I've always gotten 15K+ miles from them, and significantly more on the front tire (my current front tire has 22K on it, and still has very good tread). I'm wondering if the combination of more long distance trips over the last 9 months, greater weight on the back (between riding two up and/or carrying heavier luggage for longer distances), and especially the more excessive heat conditions we've had this year on our trips are all playing into this poorer-than-average mileage I got this time around on the rear tire. Or maybe I just got a sub-standard tire back there to start with last time around. The date stamp on it was 5110, so it wasn't a very old tire when installed in September of 2011. I always keep 40 - 42 psi in the rear, along with 25 to 30 psi in the shock, so those variables are pretty consistent. Is there any intel on overall motorcycle tire performance with heat as a variable? I've Googled the subject, and there's not much out there.
  14. Did somebody knows where the flashlight relay is located on the Venture 2nd Gen? I don't know if it is below the front fairing or below the side covers? Thanks in advance for any help.
  15. I found rather coming behind the trike (lower profile). It was much easier to come in with the jack from the left/right side front fenders. it also gives you the room to plant a couple jack stands as well. Just come in from the direction shown and place the jack(s) under the shock bolt area. when coming in from that direction it allows you to be able to place the jack in the front on the other bar. when I remove both wheels I still leave both jacks in place and add the jack stands for saftey. These are $16 dollor jacks from your favorite Auto Store. While all the tires are off I plan on using POR-20 in the Exhaust extensions And cleaning everything up under there. I will post the POR-20 job next week. Enjoy. 16. I have a 96 royal star. The front rotors are pitted. I was wondering what years and models would work for used replacements off ebay. Thanks Dave
  17. Still having issues with a wobble in front end of 2007 RSTD with 93K KLM (57K miles). Have new front tyre balanced and fitted, new steering head bearings and everything seems nice and tight. Wobble happens at about 40kph (25mph). Not noticable whilst accelerating/braking but if speed is constant in a straight line and smoth road wobble develops. Seems OK at higher speeds. Any suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated.
  18. I have a conundrum concerning the installation of a new front tire on my 86. Part of the problem is probably of my own making and the remainder remains a mystery to me. I installed a new Dunlap E3 and put in 2 oz. of the Dyna Beads. Since this was my first motorcycle tire self-replacement I took my time and read the posts and even watched a video on tire changing. Removed the old tire, polished the rim, removed all the old weights etc. Installed the new tire (MR90-18 71H) and put in the beads, aired it up and everything looked fine. Took the bike out for a ride and did maybe 100 miles. The front tire exhibited a noticeable hopping at low speeds and more so on starts from a standing stop. The the "hopping" disappeared when the speed was increased to above 10 mph or so. The problem: took the bike out for another run and pushed it up into the 80+ mph range (fast for the curvy roads around here). No problems noted until some more vibrations of a much higher frequency developed at higher speeds. When I returned home and was about to turn into my drive the front started a violent head shake. I was rolling right along at the time and was on the front and rear brakes to slow down and turn. The "hopping" was very noticeable and then the head shaking began. Could not turn into the drive and coasted to the neighbors drive and found that the front tire was completely flat and had come off the safety bead on one side. Naturally the Dyna Beads were all over the neighbors drive. Walked home, picked up the air tank and returned to the bike and pumped up the tire, as if nothing had happened. It is still holding 40 psi this morning. My part of the problem is that I put the 'light spot" opposite the valve stem, in reverse of the accepted method. Now what the heck is the remainder of the cause of the tire loosing all the air in a few seconds with no apparent reasons? This experience is certainly not a confidence builder. Any help would be greatly appreciated. PS: As this bike is normally ridden with a side car attached the rake of the triple tree has been increased by about 7 degrees. I was not riding with the car attached when this occurred.
  19. an extra front reflector off of a rsv......I seem to have lost one of mine...I'll pay for shipping if you have one laying around that your not using...:whistling:I don't think it matters but its the right front that I'm missing
  20. My 98 RSTD has rusted leaky front exhaust pipes(rust pinholes at the front bend).Mine was an outside stored bike before I got it...I need to know which year range will fit so I search for used ones. I found some at Pinwall Cycle on Ebay.I'd like to buy the newest model used pipes I can.If anyone has any let me know. I know for sure I need the two front pipes coming from the head to the rear.I don't need the mufflers as I have done the Road King thing. Also any tips, tricks to remove and install such as best exhaust gaskets and such. Also I have a set of new brackets for installing RK pipes,I didn't use them,I decided to weld the stock brackets on my RK muffs. Not sure the going rate( I bought em a year ago) but I'll let them go cheap. Thanks Doug
  21. Most of the time when you think "stupid idiot" it is usually directed at what someone in a cage did. Well, in this instance... first thing I could think of after it happened was that I was the "stupid idiot". Hopefully someone else will learn from my near miss. Might be a good reminder "mid-riding season" to be carefull out there. So here is my story... Yesterday started out with me sleeping in (late night getting home after meeting other members) so I left work later than normal. Made for a long day at work. Considering it was my birthday I felt I deserved to sleep in that day. Started followed my normal route home. Roads from Cambridge (Toyota plant) offer limited routes to get to Kitchener/Waterloo and at 5pm my best option was to head South to the highway (401- runs East/South-West) and get off at the first exit to go North from there. Clear sky, dry pavement, nice and warm. For those that don't know the area, Sportsworld drive is 4 lanes (2 in each direction) and ends at King St which is also 4 lanes (again, 2 lanes each direction). So I'm cruising comfortably along Sportsworld heading West to get to King St. Bit of traffic, a few bikes headed the same way. I'm in the left lane approaching the turn lane on Sportsworld to turn onto King. Probably 8 vehicles in front of me before the light which is red. One of the bikes passes me in the right lane and then cuts left to wedge themselves into the turn lane, they become 3rd from the light. I'm thinking that guy is inconsiderate. Advance turn signal... I'm the last one thru before the advance signal ends. Car in front of me and I change lanes to the right lane on King. The other biker and cars ahead are pulling away (going faster) from us. Since the car in front of me is going at a reasonable pace and I didn't have to rush anywhere, I stayed behind the car. No traffic directly behind us, left lane clear beside the car in front and I. I'm 3 or 4 car lengths behind the car in front, riding in the right lane in the left track. Sounds good so far doesn't it? I tend to be aware of my surroundings, knowing what's ahead and behind and anticipating. Normally approaching traffic lights I'll check the cross-walk signal to see if the light is changing. This time, I'm looking to see where the bike ahead is as we are approaching a set of traffic lights (Tu Lane Road - T intersection with my route going straight thru). Maybe a group mentality wondering if bike ahead is going to get on the highway and if I'll catch up. Not sure whether my vision caught brake lights on the car ahead of me, or if it was the sound of his screeching tires as he hit the brakes hard that diverted my attention back to where it should have been. Light changed to amber and the car in front of me wasn't going thru the intersection. I apply front and rear brakes heavy, locking up the rear. The car in front of me is locked up and sliding the front end towards the right curb. Funny how things go into slow motion in a situation like this. I can smell burning rubber as tires slide on the pavement... not sure if it is from my rear tire or the car. I'm closing on the car thinking I'm going to hit the rear of his car and this is gonna hurt ! Avoidance move and stop beside him or hope for the best... but hoping for the best and I end up laying on his trunk or thru his back window. Thinking... its my birthday.... better to avoid than spend the rest of my day in a hospital. So... rear wheel locked up, heavy braking on the front (but not locked up)... need to turn a bit. Slight release of pressure on the rear to unlock it... as the wheel starts turning the rear end jerks left .... must have been sliding slightly sideways. Couldn't have been angled the other direction... had to swing the wrong way, lining me up with the centre of car in front of me. What started out as a slight veer turns into a large move required. Lighter pressure on the front brake.... don't want to lock it up trying to veer left and then find myself low siding under his bumper. Do a quick counter steer to the left... straighten the handle bars...more front brake... heavy on the rear... locking up the rear again. Best option.... come to a stop beside the car at least. I'm skidding... car in front comes to a full stop finally. Because he skidded to the right... his rear end is sticking out and he is taking the full lane. Gotta move more to the left to get around him... this is gonna be close! Lighter on the front and rear... counter steer to the left...I'm clearing his bumper but I'm not going to stop beside him... I'm going to be in the intersection. Why did the guy in front of me jam on his brakes? Oh sh!t... the light had changed... is it still yellow or is traffic from the side moving yet? Glance up.... light is red .... glance left and traffic just starting to move. Stop in the intersection or go thru ??? Release front and rear brakes... rear wasn't going straight so it jerks to the side.... this time giving me some help in clearing the car and heading the right way. Accelerate to clear the intersection before the cars turning are where I want to be. I don't know at what point I did it but somewhere between the moment I started reacting to the point where I had to accelerate I must have downshifted a gear. Engine smoothly accelerated and didn't bog down. I'm clear of the car, thru the intersection, and ahead of the cars that were turning. First thought... what a stupid idiot I was. Inattentive for a moment... I could have ended up in the hospital and totalling the bike. Second thought... wonder what the drivers of the cars turning thought when they saw what I had done. They must have been thinking either what an idiot I was or how skillfully I handled the bike. (to me it was pure luck !) Me... I still think I was an idiot for not paying attention to the light and anticipating it and that the car in front of me would stop. How I avoided ramming the rear end of the car ahead of me... clearing it by maybe a foot... I was lucky. I did what I had to ... but I shouldn't have gotten myself in that situation in the first place. Be carefull out there... mid-season and we start to get "lazy" in watching for hazards. The heat, the sun... easy to have distractions or day dream. Yesterday was a good reminder for me to stay attentive. I rode to work today... and thankful that I'm not in a hospital.
  22. Most of you know my Dunlop D404 is shot after 4.5-5K on the back of the 84. Last year before our trip to the beach and vogel I installed new Kenda Kruz tires on the 89. after 3000 miles I can say the tires still look like new. Handling and ride is good with no problems. The 89 only gets rode two up while the 84 is my solo machine. I bought the kenda's because the price is right and the rear tire is a 6 ply rating instead of 4 with a load capacity of over 900 lbs. I just ordered a new set for the 84. $145 shipped to the front door. The tread depth on the rear is a very deep design. http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/photos/tire-tyre-guide/Kenda-K673KruzF.jpg Kenda K673 Kruz Front http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/photos/tire-tyre-guide/Kenda-K673Kruz.jpg
  23. Being that I do not think I'll be able to find a set of those nice highly polished cylinder side covers that were on the rear set of cylinders on my 91 VR (Took them off my 89 Front Cylinders). Is there any one with the skill and equipment be willing to provide an insurance estimate for me. Thank You
  24. I searched but could not find anything that was first gen related. Can get a steal on a set of tires the rear is the stock 240/90/16 The front that is what I have the question on is a front that is a mt 90b 18 or 130/90-16 Now i have read of these being used on the RSV's with success and the riders liking them but i have heard nothing from the First Gen crowd. Any thoughts or experiences are appreciated. Bags
  25. Noticed this weekend....the front end/handlebars have quite a bit of vibration on all but the smoothest roads. Is this another venture quirk? My guess is poor balance of front wheel or slop in steering head section...sound about right? Haven't checked either yet...but new tires coming Thursday. That and some dynamo beads should eliminate any balance issues. Looks like 9000 miles on original 404's
