  1. Guest

    Look Ma, no hands!

This guy must have some sort of clutch and throttle modifications....not to mention front brake... http://autos.yahoo.com/blogs/motoramic/no-hand-man-motorcyclist-attempting-hands-free-525-145903268.html
  2. I have already lowered the front end on my RSMV and the handling is satisfactory. But now I am coming up on time for new tires. I have been thinking in going with either the original Dunlop replacements or Elites...... What I have doubts about is the front......Should I stick to the 150 or go with a 130?????? Looks wise, I would think it makes little difference ....but I wonder about the handling........
  3. I just ordered a new Commander II along with a new Dunlop E-3 to replace my existing E-3's as Michelin doesn't make a 150 for the front. Anyone done this yet? Ron
  4. I recently went out with family members to see some local musicans at a club here in town. While waiting for the show to start i was looking out the big front windows at the traffic and watched as a sidecar pulled up to the corner. It had a Velorex 700 attached just like my old one. and it looked like it was on a Yamaha like my old one. In fact it was my old rig. It pulled up in front of the club and parked. I ran out to talk to the owner who wasn't the guy i sold the bike to. He had just bought it and loved it. i told him all kinds of stories about its history and i gave him my number in case he needed any info on the bike. It was nice to see her again and see someone enjoying it as much as i did. Its always nice to run into an old friend.
  5. Got my 1990 Venture home today. It will need some tlc, tires, battery, the normal stuff. It also has a leak at the thermostat housing. Why would this leak? One of the worst things is the handling. It has a Dunlop CruiseMax on the front, and an Elite on the rear. When coming to a stop, the whole front end shudders like it has an octagonal shaped tire or something. Whole bike feels just generally wobbly and mushy. A cursory inspection reveals a few loose bolts. So I think I'm gonna strip off the bodywork and tighten EVERYTHING. And maybe some solid or urethane motor mounts. Combing through the forums looking for a plan of attack. Otherwise, I think the Venture and I are going to make lots of memories.
  6. just got a old motorcycle off of craiglist pretty ruff shape. No si covers so ihv no idea wa kind of bike it is. It is a Kawasaki big 4 cylinder (not V) possibly 99 or 2000 Shaft drive Disc brakes in front and Drums in back. I have the vin but not sure if I can tell from the vin. Anyone have any clues?
  7. Do the air collars on the front forks just slide up and off to remove the forks?? They don't seem to move. I sprayed some wd40 on the but still nothing. Trying to get them out for my guy to rebuild. Ideas, a little tap up to convince maybe?? Tx
  8. I was going 35 MPG and I let go of the handel bars to zip up my jacket, I know I shouldn't ever take both my hands off grips , but that being said at that speed the front wheel really started to wobble, I that I was going down for a moment it was that bad, at first I thought it was just the road but I tried it again and again the wobble. I also tried at 30 mpg and 40 and zero wobble. What should I be looking at ? Thanks
  9. Good morning: I've just finished replacing my brake, throttle and clutch lines with SS units and my handlebar with a Flanders model. All went pretty well, but my front brake lever does not have a firm feel to it and the bike can be moved, with some effort, with the brakes applied. I have checked all my connections for tightness and there was no air in the system when I bled the lines yesterday. A check of the service manual doesn't lead me to what could be wrong. So what could I have missed or done wrong? Is there some adjustment at the lever itself which needs to be performed (the manual doesn't indicate anything)? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I do believe in "old college tries" and will bleed the lines again with a vacuum pump. The reservoir is angled slightly back (not horizontal when the handlebars are turned left), but I don't think that should have a bearing on a closed system. Thanks in advance to all who can lend a hand. Regards, Eric S. "alta55rsv"

  11. ok we took it out for a run and i must say where getting there still idles a little rough but going to run the pi## out of it. still about 1/4 full with that can of seafoam i put in it . but i hit 55 mph and i swear i had like a dozen cats screaming at me. let me tell ya it puckerd me up. i though oh crap its going to lock up the engine? well i noticed the speedo was just jumping. and damn the noise was loud. so ok is it the cable. or the drive unit at the wheel keep in mind we did both wheels rotors brakes and all did i mess something up while doing that work? i have a extra used cable here as well as the driveunit. but dang i hate to think i got to pull that front wheel again. i also learned if you think it needs to be oiled you better do it. time to wd 40 and check everything out. you know the most fun is learning to do it and learn. right now i would like to kick the PO arse. letting the bike get this way. but when i get er done im going to be one happy guy. also whats the best setting for air. i got 12 in front and 32 rear that might be why it feels so tall. and a little fun getting on it. and is there a way to tell if progressive springs have been installed its a 84 and for some reason or im not looking right i dont see anti dives? also no front air cross over for the forks? where it should be by the key there is now a pull switch that works the fan? why someone did that i dont know? its never overheated on me and i never pulled that switch. except to see what it was. maybe just a precaution while sitting in heavy traffic turn it on?
  12. some people may not like them, but for $50 i think thay look good,,also have yellow ones on the front
  13. I was bleeding my brakes per the Service Manual - right front, left front, rear, and the one on top. I installed SpeedBleeders on the left front and the rear as I went along. Everything worked as per normal -- fluid came out exactly as expected. No problems until I tried to bleed the one on top. Nothing came out - no air, no fluid, --nothing. I went around to the left front and nothing came out from there (even though it did a few minutes before). Likewise for the rear caliper bleed valve (which worked before). Hey, at least the right front works perfectly. Everything is like it came from the factory -- I never delinked the brakes or did any brake upgrades on this VR. The brakes were working fine before all of this. I just wanted to do some flushing for maintenance reasons. My guess is that there is something going on with the rear master cylinder. I searched the forum but nothing turned up that is exactly like this problem. I am open to suggestions before I begin surgery on the patient ....
  14. Early last spring, I joined the Gold Wing Road Riders Association since I had found myself hanging out and riding with the local chapter guys on a regular basis. We have a lot of fun and they don't care what you're riding as long as you're riding. Last month, while riding my '94 Triumph, an electrical problem stalled the bike (Can you believe it? An electrical problem on an English bike!!) and I had to pull over. As I couldn't diagnose the problem just then, I decided to use my new Honda roadside rescue service, included in my membership fee. I hadn't noticed when I joined up, but it turns out they will only take your bike to a repair shop ... they won't take it to your home! Now I know they have their reasons, but this put me in a difficult position. The nearest bike shop that I thought might even be willing to look at a Triumph (Independent shop - not a dealer) was 15 miles away while my house was about 6 miles away. The nearest Triumph dealer was 50 miles away. But, what was worse, it was nearly 8 at night which meant the shops were closed. I would have had to leave my bike parked in front of the store and in both cases, in an area that was, well, not exactly a high class area. Putting it bluntly, to have left the bike there would have meant about a 90% chance of severe vandalism or outright theft. And then, once the details would have come out, I wonder if the insurance company would have been willing to pay. Anyway, after talking with the rep and having him check with his supervisor, I gave up and called the C.A.A. (Canadian equivalent of the A.A.A.) since I have the "plus" membership. They were there in 20 minutes with a nice covered trailer with a low load floor, a wheel chock at the front and tie down straps. We were loaded up and ready to roll in 5 minutes and they took me straight home and helped me get the bike into my garage. So, I'm not knocking the Honda Rescue Service, as I'm sure they have good reasons for operating as they do, but if anyone is thinking of joining the club, remember this fact. You may still need another service in some cases. Then again, they may have heard of my little stunt at a local A&W bike night when a young guy asked me what the letters "GWRRA" on my crest, stood for. I said "Oh I'm with the Gold Wing Road Riders Association" then tipping my Yamaha cap, I added, "Brought to you by Yamaha." Did I mention the chapter president was in line directly in front of me when I said that? Andy
  15. David was in his 5th grade class when the teacher asked the children what their fathers did for a living. All the typical answers came up - fireman, policeman, salesman, office worker, etc.. David was being uncharacteristically quiet and so the teacher asked him about his father. “My father's an exotic dancer in a gay bar and he takes off all his clothes in front of other men. Sometimes, if the offer's really good, he'll make a date with some guy and go out with him for money.” The teacher, obviously shaken by this statement, hurriedly set the other children to work on some coloring, and took little David aside to ask him, "David? Is that really true about your father?" "No," said David, “ Actually, he's a performance engineer at Harley Davidson, but I was too embarrassed to say that in front of the other kids.
  16. http://venturerider.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=1039&pictureid=6985I mounted my Stebel in front, I made a bracket from scrap that mounts above ( I slid it behind) my driving light bracket. I did run a clear hose on it and will in the future find some chrome plumbing and bend it up and run it into the fairing to keep dirt and moisture out of the horn. http://venturerider.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=1039&pictureid=6986 http://venturerider.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=1039&pictureid=6984
  17. I stopped at " Hinshaw Honda" , Auburn Wa. yesterday to buy a couple odds and ends. Lots of used bikes parked in front of the dealership. Anyway, they have an 09 RSV, Black, in good looking condx, price tag I think was either #8 or 9 K. I would estimate the bike had around 35K as the front tire was an Avon. ( if we assume the OEM front went about 20K. ) Also, they had a 91 Venture, All in one piece, with 44K on it, asking 3800.00. Anyway, for an RSV, Trunk, fairing and all the goodies, for the price if anybody is interested, lot better deal then 20K for a new one !!
  18. I stumbled across a couple of vacum gauges I had in the drawer. If I was to use these to sync up the carbs do I do the left 2 carbs together, then the right 2 and then connect the gauges to say the front left and front right and match them up. That is what I get from the sync article I read here, if I break it down right.
  19. I have an 83 Royale & a 2000 RSV MM. I owned an 81 Venture for about 16 years and then sold it at the instance of my wife. (wish I still had it). I"ve had my 83 for about 7 yrs and my RSV MM for 2yrs. Ride them both but have ridden my 83 on most of my long distance trips. I decided to change up my routine this year and rode the RSV to Sturgis for the first time. After completing my trip, I made several observations. I'm curious what others have noticed in their own experiences. First: 83 is nimble, agile, corners easilty with great balance; has quite a bit of zip and is extremely comfortable for the long ride. In contrast the RSV is awkward, difficult to corner, seems not just top heavy but front end heavy, in fact, the front end shimmies at times particularly at lower speeds on the way to HWy speeds. I took my left hand off the bar for a second & the front end began to shake so bad it spilled coffee all over the bike that was secured in my mounded beverage holder. Overall ride on the 83 is much smoother and the bikes handles way better then the 2000 RSV. Other differences: 83 has voltmeter, tach, full set of guages, on-board compressor for automatic ride leveling system; 2000 doesn't have any of these. Only difference I saw where the RSV out performed the 83 was in the sound system. Much better in the 2000 with the addition of the rear speakers; when listening to the speakers and not the headset, it has a quadraphonic sound quality. Earlier this spring I mentioned to the shop foreman, that I enjoyed riding the 83 Royale over the 2000 RSV. They didn't have a lot of background on Ventures & didn't believe me until they had worked on both and taken both for test rides. After that, they agreed that the 83 was a much smoother & better handling bike & couldn't believe all the amenities that the 83 came stock with over the present RSVs. The 83 really was ahead of it's time. IMO, the only way to improve on the existing RSV is to make it more commensurate with the 1st Gens! Just curious what others may think.
  20. went to my uncles house last week end and he has an insanely steep driveway with a 90 degree turn half way up that is recessed in the middle, don't know what inspired me to stop there but i did and with front and rear tire propped up on the hills i put my foot down and nothing was there. smash onto the crash bars with my aunt and uncle sitting on the front porch wondering who the idiot fallen into the bushes is
  21. Last Sunday wasn't such a nice day in the northeast. Desided good day to do a little cleaning. Got to Lowe's when it opened and picked up a few supplies: Heavy duty ecologically friendly cleaner. An aluminum, chrome and stainless steel cleaner polisher. 00 grade steel wool rated pads. Got home, made some coffee, got some tunes going in the garage, parked my rump on the floor and got at it. Front wheel Picture 1 - Before Picture 2 - After heavy duty cleaning Picture 3 - After maybe 10 minutes of aluminum cleaner and scrubbing Pics 4 and 5 - Worked on front right fork too. Front wheel (rims only) + front right fork = 4 hours It ain't new but pretty happy with results. Even looks faster. Me thinks me needs a few more rainy days though.
  22. Decided to take my front wheel of myself this time to take it to a bike shop to have a tire mounted on it. Usually I just have the shop do the whole job. So, my question is, what the heck do I have to do to get the axle out? I loosened the allen head pinch bolt, but I can't get the axle to break lose. I'm using a 22mm socket with a medium size breaker bar. Makes me wonder if I should get out the ole impact wrench. This axle is a left hand thread, right? Thanks for suggestions, Lynn
  23. OK, I'm ordering a new E3 for the Rear on the 08 RSTD.( MV85B-15 ) As to installing a Narrower, front tire to replace the OEM Bridgestone ?? ( The 150/80 - 16H OEM now installed ) Dunlop is showing Front size, 150/80-16, and MT90B16H sizes for E3 type. OK question, is for installing a Narrower Tire on the front, what is the preferred Brand, and Size to order. ( Not the cheap tires !! ) Is the MT90B16H the one to order ??? Or do I have to get a Michelen, or Avon for the front, in order to have the narrower tire up front for Improved Handleing ???
  24. I have a 99 royal star deluxe and I want to get a front fairing for it and when I put my bike info in there is nothing for my year can someone please point me in the right directions and also what later years would fit
