  1. TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE 1930s, '40s, '50s, '60s and '70s!! First, we survived being born to mothers who may have smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes. Then, after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets, and, when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps, not helmets, on our heads. As infants and children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes.. Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this. We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter, and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar. And we weren't overweight. WHY? Because we were always outside playing...that's why! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. --And, we were OKAY. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride them down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes.. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.. We did not have Play Stations, Nintendo’s and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVDs, no surround-sound or CDs, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms. WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth, and there were no lawsuits from those accidents. We would get spankings with wooden spoons, switches, ping-pong paddles, or just a bare hand, and no one would call child services to report abuse. We ate worms, and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls, and -although we were told it would happen- we did not put out very many eyes. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them. Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law! These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers, and inventors ever. The past 50 to 85 years have seen an explosion of innovation and new ideas.. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. If YOU are one of those born between 1925-1970, CONGRATULATIONS! You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good. Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ? ~~~~~~~ The quote of the month by Jay Leno: "With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"
  2. just thought i'd take a second to say "thank you" to all my REAL friends, here. over coffee , this morning , i was "counting " up some of my blessings, and all of you wonderful people on this site floated to the near top of my list. so to all my real friends, HAPPY THANKSGIVING", in advance. probably won't be able to be here tomorrow. oh, redneck - - - - - that goes for you too, i guess! just jt
  3. After lunch today, 150 miles into a 250 mile ride, my riding buddy, Ron, informed me that since our last ride (about six weeks ago) he: A. Finally retired, last Friday. B. Divorced his wife of 40+ years C. Is selling his house and moving to Brazil in a couple of weeks D. His son is storing the bike for him and he will be back in March to see the doctor and wants to ride again then. And that was that. I just said, "Ok, cool." and we went outside to talk to a guy about the custom paint on his Harley night-train. Surreal, but I have then decided that rider friends are just lower maintenance than other friends and life is just the crap that happens between rides.
  4. I was out riding to a friends house last Saturday felt something like a rock under the rear tire after that nothing smooth ride all the way up to 80+. I get near my friends house slow down to around 40 and I start feeling thump like a flat. I pull up to my friends hous get off look at the tire give it a kick and it's solid so I figure I lost a wheel weight. We head out tearing up the road on to the highway running up 90+ and back down then out onto Route 1 in MA and stop for a Lobster roll and some seafood chowder. Finish eating and then head back to the bike and we were standing there talking and I happened to look down at my back tire.... Now has anyone else run into one like this. The tire pressuse has been kept at 40 psi and the tire has around 9,000 miles on it.
  5. Price reduced on my 09. Take another look, if I can't sell it to one of my friends here it will be repo'd soon. Thanks for looking.
  6. Friends, I just came back from my annual 4 day motorcycle / camping trip in the Michigan U.P. and for the second year I've used this grill. I am not affiliated with them in any way, or do I receive any compensation. I just wanted to share this product with you as it works great and packs well. I hope it's useful info to some of you campers out there. Travel safe. http://www.adjustagrill.com/

  8. Well made it home safe and sound. Was gone 6 weeks did 11 states and 4100 miles. Had a great visit with my sisters and mom in CA and got to see some old friends from my much younger days. Had a horrible hot ride across hwy 50 in Nv and UT but was great going thru the Rockies. Met some nice bikers from all over the states and Canada. Even ran into a couple in the middle of the desert in Nv from Missouri got to talking and found out he was my aunts first cousin. Just never know who you might run into out riding the country. Now tto clean the bike and get ready to go visit friends at the Hub. Sharon and I will be down early fri morning Bill can only stay for the day she has to work sat. John
  9. I currently have an 07 blue / black Venture. I've been tossing around the idea of changing the color to Sunkist Orange. When I was a teen, one of my friends painted their Sportster that color. Can the dash be painted on the Venture? Craigr
  10. Just wondering if anyone in the downriver Mi area has a plans for a ride over the weekend. I plan on being home for that weekend and would like to see all you ugly ducklings again :rotfl::rotfl: Not saying I'm any better BUT it would be nice to see everyone again. So if there are any plans lets post. It also includes everyone on the other side of the river 2 We cant forget our friends there. Star4772
  11. A special bin in the Nut house for all our Wingnut friends.
  12. Here are the pictures from the Virginia M&E last weekend! We all had such a great time and the weather was absolutely beautiful! We filled up the big parking lot at the BBQ place with bikes! That place will never be the same again! It was great seeing old friends and making new ones! Riding the Skyline for the first time was such a thrill for us and we are ready to finish seeing the rest of it. Sounds like another road trip to me! We rode to Sledgehammer's house Friday night and thank Tim and Renee for putting us up for the night. George and Tim played a little foosball that night even though they both were so tired! And so many very special thanks to Riderduke's Felicia and Courtney for the warm hospitality of their home. Felicia, we looked at the Bahama Mama maker yesterday. It is on my Christmas list! But only if Courtney can come down and show me how to make them! It is always so much fun being around the girls!:bighug:I see a Sunday morning tradition of a run to Krispy Kreme!!! Spring fever is in the air and being out on the bike with friends was just perfect! http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/venturerider/Sleeperhawk%20Mechanics%20April%2017%202010%20ME/

  14. .....But Finally Finally Finally!....I got a job I'd like to share this with you folks, there are many here in Texas and all over that have helped Lonna and I while we were down and as poor as poor could be. We have the best friends anyone could deserve, and there are many here that I love beyond words. Today, with the help of one of my best friends, Ponch, I was able to get hired in where David works @ Dicar as a machinery maintenance man. The pay is decent, 1/3 less than what I was making....but I have a job. I will tell you all here that I keep things close to the cuff when it comes to how we are doing. We have always been ok, but I have been as depressed and down as any other time in my life. Not being able to support your family wears on a guy. Lonna and I have been "homeless" since we packed up and left out house in Michigan in late October. Gunboat has been the best blessing we could have hoped for, he is one of my best friends and I love him dearly. Without him, we wouldn't have been able to come to Texas, and I can never repay him for all he has put himself through to help both Lonna and myself. I would like to tell you all that I am giddy with excitement, and perhaps tomorrow I will be. But today, I am just relieved, the kind of relief you have when you have been fighting a Gorilla for 7 months and can finally stop fighting with him. I am happy, and I am so looking forward to be able to make some money. I know we all complain about work, I know when it's 100 degrees in August here I will too....but I will remember that I have a job to be able to go to. No great revelations, No banners or Hoopla, just thankful that I can give my brain a little rest and get that elephant off my chest. To all my brothers and sisters here that said a prayer for us....Thank you.
  15. every morning, and sometimes, late afternoon, I see this Black Mid-Night, coming out of the Hallandale Motorcoach park, In Hallandle Florida. I know, its one of our Canadian Friends. He rides with a guy with a Harley. anyone from here?
  16. well today it got up to 48 out side so i thought i would go give the old venture a try. i got it out of the garage. fired her up she idels rough as i knew she would. i put sea foam in it back in october a whole can to a full tank of gas but due to knee problem i never ran the heck out of it. well i was going to take it to a friends garage today for work on brakes , put on rotors , brake pads and tires. so i tokk it out for a 25 mile ride darn thing just couldnt get past 60 mph?? i got into town and pulled up to the stop sign. while letting off the gas. it backfired like a 410 shot gun. i swear i saw the lady in the cross walk duck. well after the back fire she seemed to smooth out some?? so i took her back out on highway and hit 70 mph?? then she started to bog down? well i got her home and went duh ! james you didnt put the new plugs in did ya? nope i forgot. chalk it up to want to ride syndrom. its now back in the bro inlaws garage as my friends apendix ruputred and hes now in the hospital. so no work done on it. me think its time for old goat to learn on this bike. so im going to check the oil make sure no gas in it. then do the plugs. and give her another try. i have to be carefull as brakes are not verry good on the bike. but i want to get her running fair to good. then up to freebirds maintenance day. to work out the bugs?? any thing else i should check out??
  17. What do you think the value for a 1998 Royal Star Tour Deluxe should be? I have my eyes on a very well loaded, low mileage machine that is lady ridden. I have friends who know the bike and it has not been down. It may be worthwhile to buy and sell later.
  18. Today was one of those days that really makes a body feel great! Had breakfast with a bunch of friends and then hit the road for a couple hundred miles. Temps in the mid sixties and riding with great friends, WOW!!!!!!
  19. Vacation "Burn" Day .. nice day to spend in the cave. A little work a friend's 99 RSV.
  20. Hey Guys, Just couple of updates, where the 1st is that I'm having to go up $5 on my price for reworking seats. It's only been more recently that I've been able to get a good handle on my actual product costs for reworking a seat above what I feel is my cost for the time involved. Most of this is for the 1.5" memory foam I have been using, where I am having to pay more for the sheets I'm using now. When I first started doing this, I was using some foam I had left over from a bedding change and decided to make good use of it. Then I found a supply that was on sale at a reasonable cost, but now I've having to pay something closer to retail. Then there is the cost of the spray adhesive and staples that I use that add up over time per seat. I just don't want to appear to be gouging my friends. And I'll honor my previous prices for folks that I have been talking to recently. But secondly, I have inserted an ad for saddlebag bolts that "Dragerman" so kindly named for me..........Butler Built Bag Bolts (aka BBB Bolts). http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php/product/1662 And since I was on a roll, I also made up several sets of the thumb nuts that I designed and have been using for years. I've also given these to close friends that I ride with locally. Both of these items allow you to take your saddlebags and seat off by hand with no tools. http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php/product/1663/cat/7 I still have to test them out, but I think I can use the same design of the Bag Bolts and build a set of seat thumb bolts for the RSTD owners, so they can take their seats off without any tools. I'll post my findings after I make up a few sets and have a couple of close RSTD friends check them out. Hope this helps, Rick
  21. Hey any facebook fun overhere? i like to add some of you guys as my friends. Here is my link: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?ref=profile&id=1112199705
  22. i hope there is some truth to the myth that bad things happen in three's. as some of you know on the wedsday before christmas i lost 2 of my friends and co-workers thank you again for all your prayers and support but it has happened again on this friday past a co-worker i have known for 16 years who helped train me in my job at the railroad came to work went home ate diner with his family and died in his sleep. Im starting to feel like im running out of tears and short of friends..... thanks again for you guys being here to listen in my time of need again. Ron:depressed:
  23. I didnt know where else to turn but i have a need to exspress myself and thought you my exstended family would lend me an ear. for those of you who dont know me My name is Ron and have been a memeber here for almost a year and have had alot of fun here and have made some friends forever and hope tomake more. im also the guy who will chime in with something silly to say on no matter what the subject but today i have cried like i have never cried before yesterday (wedsday dec.23) i lost a friend and a co-worker to heart failure early in the day he had just retired last month and hadnt even collected his first check yet Jim was a geat man and friend he spent the majority of his life caring for his mother and she passed in early sptember. we all grieved with Jim for the loss of his mother but he was strong and carried on. Jim finially had found the right lady for him and seemed happy and excited and then was takn from us on that day. that made the office a quiet place to work and if you think your day couldnt get any worse it did i work for CSX railroad in cincinnati, ohio and another friend Paul who is the car inspector and had a history of heart trouble came to work with us as always and as he was running the brakes on or last train of the day we waited to hear those finial words from him " you have a high ball on the air" which means your" brakes are set and there ok" then we were to start our christmas party. i watched him drive passed the office and never heard from him i called and called on the radio with no ansewer. i jumped in my truck to g laugh at him for forgetting to turn his radio on to find him layed across the seatof his truck. i called 911 started CPR and lost a second friend on the same day. i think to myself if i could have gotton there faster or shocked him sooner i would have my friend with me now.... i know in my heart of hearts this is not my fault the good lord has plans for us all and he knows when its our turn to join him but cant help but to feel like im being punished for something i did why would 2 of my friends be taken from me on the same day????? i know better than to question this but cant help myself. im sorry for being so sad on here the day before christmas but i think my friends here will understand. thanks for your ear and i hope at least you and yours will have a good christmas.. Ron p.s. Please remembe to tell everyone you love them today and everyday you dont know when the last chance to say it will be.
  24. Here are some of the Pics we took at Big Bend. It was great to meet old friends and make new ones.
