  1. Back in '09 while trailering the bike up to Cody I lost my bifocal glasses. I didn't discover it until traveling thru Yellowstone. I pulled into a rest area to read a map of the park and couldn't find my readers.... I searched all over the inside of the truck and even drove all the way back to the West Gate to see if they'd fell out of the truck when I opened the door to take out my wallet for ID. No soap. The only other place I'd gotten out of the truck was at the Craters of the Moon in Idaho and I sure wasn't going to drive the 200+ miles back there to see if someone had turned them in to lost and found. So.... I went the whole week riding with my shades, but it was a PITA trying to read a menu or see after the sun went down. When I got back home I bought a new pair. Never totally liked them, but at least I could read a menu... This morning while trying to wire up the trailer on the '99 I went looking for a circut tester. I have a half dozen, but do you think I could find one anywhere? So I figured I must have one in the center consul of the truck. Went out, opened up the lid and started to dig around. My CC is as bad as my garage. You guessed it. Tucked down on the drivers side of the mess was my lost glasses. Searching from the drivers side I couldn't see them, but from the passenger side there they were. What's ironic about this whole thing is I lost them going to Cody, and found them while getting ready to go back to Cody. Go Figure!!!
  2. Guest

    where is my post?

I said I had some extra parts and such for sale and posted it on the watering hole forum as I have seen others do. I went back later to read it and found it had been moved. Where was it moved and why? I can't find it. Reno
  3. Most of the white lettering has worn off of my switches and buttons. I have tried the detailing paint brush and paint and that was less than satisfying. Has anyone found a way to restore the lettering that is simple that even I could do it?
  4. I bought my 2004 midnight RSV fall of last year. It's a well maintained stock bike just as it left the factory. I knew it would need accessories, but I got a great deal so that didn’t bother me. I found in a thread on this site that someone referred to MotorSportsSuperCenter.com. So I tried it and what a great deal. I received 26% off my order and was able to combine shipping. The retail of my order was $567.65 and I saved $147.61 WOW. I wish I could thank the person that left this tip but I can’t remember the thread I found it in. Also on their web site, you could go to checkout and see the shipping cost without entering any payment info. The only down side was they wanted the entire order at their building to ship in one box, which is why they could offer a combined shipping rate. It took 11 days after the order was placed for UPS to drop it off at my house. Not a big deal for the cash I saved. I was fortunate to find this, so I hope someone looking for parts/accessories reads this and saves some cash. The accessories I order were all genuine Yamaha. Now I have plenty of "Safety Chrome". The only other thing I want is a wider windshield with a vent. Then bring on the sunshine a warm days.
  5. We're on our way home from the west coast. Tonight we're in Grants NM. We left home on the 21st for a ride to Oregon and N. California coast. So far we've travelled about 4800 miles. We plan to be home on Friday. For our route covered you can see it at: http://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php?id=2fd74df6c9a6b12d4 If you are bored and need something to look at, I've posted photos each day to my web site. 6. I lost my key at a routine rest stop this past weekend. I looked everywhere back tracking my steps but it just wasn't found. I couldn't believe I had lost it and we were 2 1/2 hours from home. Fortunately I had a spare hidden on the bike that had been there for a few years and never used. That saved our weekend. My lesson learned was that I will always have a spare key hidden on the bike and my in use key will be on a key chain. The rest of the story is that on our return trip we stopped at the rest stop and the lost key had been found and turned in. I'll never know how it got out of my pocket or who found it and turned it in but I learned a lesson. Bill
  7. hey all!! i have 83 venture when going on brand new pavement getting a slight up/down bounce from front at 25 to 40 mph noticed it b4 and thought maybe just roads here in new england but found a stertch of one day old pavement and really noticed it. tires are micheln and couple years old still pleanty tread on them. could it be out of balance? dont see any wheights on front tire. oh and also anyone have a clue what this goes to or if it goes on bike at all found it in trunk when cleaning it was left there by p/o
  8. I have done alot to the bike since I purchased it for 700$ and the last was this weekend I flushed the cooling system and was going to replace the thermostat until I found out what it entailed, but I did a 75 mile shake down cruise in 94 degree weather and stopped at West marine and picked up a weather proof 12v adapter to charge my cell and other things. I found the best place for me to mount it which is convenient and a short run to the battery so I am ready for the ride to Vogel, let me know if I forget anything since I am at the age were if it is not on a post it note I forget....
  9. My son just informed us that we're going to be grand parents ! They went to the ER to get a wrist X-ray and found out she has one in the oven. I guess now I'll be able to justify all this grey hair .
  10. Well after 3 years of leaking coolant I finally found the leak while at the WI MD. This was a leak that only happened when the engine was cold. I cold never find any drop or stain on anything on the bike. I know everyone will say it was the drain cock, the symptoms match that one perfectly. I did the new o-ring and SS screw upgrade and cleaned all of the corrosion out of the o-ring bore so I know it is not that, and the drip is more to the right side of the bike. This normally only leaked a couple of drops of coolant per day. After I got to the WI MD and the bike was parked for about 6 hours I spotted a drop on the driveway. I figured that I could finally catch the bike in the act of taking a leak, and I did. Well what I finally found is a tiny hairline crack about a half inch long in the thermostat cover. while I am in there I will also replace the hard 90° elbow that has a dent in it fro the right crash bar. I'll also grind off the corner of the crash bar so that it does not dent the new tube so easy. I have the new parts ordered. Now I just need to figure out how to get to it. From a distance it looks like the radiator and exhaust pipe are in the way. Any pointers will be helpful. What else should I do in there while it is apart?
  11. I couldn't remember if I had already posted this or not, did a search and couldn't find anything. I installed these a few years ago right before Vogel and haven't had any problems with them. These are flag mounts for Harley Davidson Saddle Bag Rails. They fit on RSV and RSTD bag rails with no modification. Just have to remove the bags to install them. I have small flags on them now that I use for long trips, but they came with bigger ones. They cost me about $ 100 each at a little shop I found. They come with an American Flag, POW flag and a crossbones flag. They are made by Kuryakyn, Part# 4208. Here is the website is you want further info: http://www.kuryakyn.com/Products/854/Side-Mount-Flags-Kit Just thought I would share with everyone.
  12. Well, I am kinda thinking about another bike. i love the 86 Venture and would keep it, but I found a NEW 08 RSTD near Seattle for $9800 {craigslist} at a dealer. I also found an 08 Road Star 1700 in Victoria with lots of extras for about the same price. Opinions on the Road Star? it is fuel inj, has belt drive {less mntc and no lash } How do they handle vs the RSTD or the RSV? I think they have less HP but lots of torque with the V-twin......Help! Thanks, Gary sorry, make the header read RoadStar 1700.......
  13. I found this Texelent® Bar Mount System but in emailing the inventor found out that it is designed to work only on Gold Wings. I like the idea of a bar that traverses the handle bars that will allow me to use RAM mounts to attach the various accessories I have attached to the handlebars. I also want to have my Garmin 665 top and center in my field of vision. Anyone have any ideas on an alternative? Thanks.
  14. a freind of mine said he was going to give me some "PIG SNOT" polish has anybody ever heard of or used any of there products. just wanting to know if it is all right to use on the bike.here is a web addy i found http://shop.pigsnot.com/ thanks:confused24:
  15. Apparrently does not think too highly of fireworks. When my wifes little white dog and I came in from watching the fireworks. Here is what we found.
  16. Last fall I picked up a Kawasaki KZ440A LTD off Craigslist for $200. The previous owner was tired of paying someone to keep fixing it and was frustrated at his inability to get it running. The clutch wasn’t working and it wouldn’t idle. The airbox was missing but all the electrical items worked (except the horn). He had just put new tires on it and had the brakes done – including having the fluid changed. I put it on a trailer and dragged it home to join my other project bikes in the workshop. While my Dad was here over Easter, we took apart the clutch and found the adjustment mechanism had been adjusted beyond its limit and a nut had fallen off. We put it back together and the clutch works great. I looked at the horn and one of the connectors had fallen off. Put it back on and it now works. Found an airbox (the LTD airbox is rare to find in one piece) at a boneyard in Oklahoma. It had the mounting tab broken off but still costs $70. A complete airbox was going for $140 minimum on Ebay, so I bought this one and repaired it. Got it to start, but it wouldn’t run worth a darn. Tore off the carbs and took them apart. They were fairly clean, but the diaphragms were ripped. Found a company that made and sold new diaphragms and purchased a set for $29 each (plus shipping - $67 total). Installed them, put the carbs back together and put them on the bike. Ran better, but not well. Downloaded a shop manual for the bike from a KZ forum and went to work tuning the carbs. Checked the float height (they were spot on), drilled out the covers over the mixture screws and set them to the proper setting. Set the valve gaps in the engine (they weren’t too far off). BTW, this is the easiest bike to set valve gaps I have ever seen – nice design. Set up an auxiliary fuel supply in a water bottle, hooked up the Morgan Carbtune, and sync’d the carbs (has to be done with the tank off). Not too far off, but enough to cause problems. When I went to put it all back together, I noticed the previous owner had not hooked up the vacuum hoses to the right locations and didn’t have one of the vacuum ports capped as it should be. Just happen to have a selection of rubber caps in the shop and found one that fit. Bought a new battery since the old one was 11 years old and didn’t like holding a charge. Took the fairing off an old Vulcan and put it on this bike. Fits great. Turned the rear shocks up to the maximum spring rate setting to handle my fat butt on it. Tightened the chain and lubed it. Once I got all this done, I put the tank back on, hit the starter and it fired right up. It now idles smoothly at 1200 RPM and runs beautifully up to at least 60 MPH. No plates on it so I was only running around the immediate area. This is going to be a fun bike for the boys to ride. A little small for me to travel any distance on, but just fine for pounding around town. Attached are some pictures. Notice the tires. They both still have the color stripe around the tread. Can’t be 100 miles on them. They’re worth what I paid for the bike. Total cost - $200 purchase, $70 airbox, $67 diaphragms, $5 sparkplugs, $50 battery, $4 sheet of lawn mower air cleaner material (cut to shape to fit the airbox), $4 oil filter, various hardware (replaced all removed Phillips head screws with cap head equivalents) about $10 = $410.00 1 down, 2 to go. Suzuki 750 is next.
  17. AM/FM/Cassette parts??? I just went thru all my stuff and have several tuner/amp units, tuner controllers (minus push buttons) and volume control units all tested and in working order. I'm trying to get rid of all this crap!! This stuff is free for shipping costs! Also, I will have several reconditioned Cassette decks available for a small fee exchange. I found a source for belts ansd pinch rollers and I will be refurbishing these decks for those interested in having a cassetre deck like new!
  18. Wow, that's a long way from home! The story...
  19. OK I sent my V-Max final I just bought to Pegscraper to have the speed sensor hole installed for the RSV. It was reported to be off a '98 with 16000 miles on it. When he took it apart he found the pinion gear that showed galling on the faces. I've dealt with galling before but not in a situation like this. It almost looks like a bad gear casting. Generally the gall is shiney, gouged and flaky looking. Attached are some pics of what he found. These are the worse, but they are all show signs. The ring gear has none and looks good. I'm at a loss as to what to do. Has anyone here... Squeeze?? seen this before, and is the pinion still usable?? Should I take the chance?? I could salvage a pinion out of another final, but will it work without having to deal with backlash etc.?? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
  20. Still making improvements for our Jun ride. I saw several different options on here for cup holders. The option I had decided to go with was the water bottle holder from Wal-Mart. I found a couple on clearance and bought them but before I got around installing them, I found these. I got them from the bike section in my local PX (on Fort Carson Army Post). I had to bend the brackets slightly to fit around the handlebars and the rubber on the rear grab bars (though if you wanted to cut the rubber off, they would have worked). I think they look really nice and should be functional. The only thing is you have to make sure you have a cup that tapers so that it will stay in...so a regular water bottle won't work...but we plan to just find some nice cups with straws, then we will dump whatever we are drinking in the cup and we can drink from the straw with the helmet on and no tilting of the head.... I've included a picture of the product packaging incase anyone else is interested. They are a nice chrome look. Oh, and they cost a whole $5.86 each! Mike
  21. i found some vinyl lace, but it was "cheesy, chinese made". also found some "deerskin lace". have a look at the pics and see if this might be what you need. just jt
  22. All arrivals in heaven have to go through a bureaucratic examination to determine whether admission will be granted. One room has a clerk who inputs computerized records of what each applicant did on his or her last day of life. The first applicant of the day explains that his last day was not a good one. "I came home early and found my wife lying naked in bed. She claimed she had just gotten out of the shower. Well, her hair was dry and I checked the shower and it was completely dry too. I knew she was into some hanky-panky and I began to look for her lover. I went onto the balcony of our 9th floor apartment and found the SOB clinging to the rail by his finger tips. I was so angry that I began bashing his fingers with a flower pot. He let go and fell, but his fall was broken by some awnings and bushes. On seeing he was still alive I found super human strength to drag our antique cedar chest to the balcony and throw it over. It hit the man and killed him. At this point the stress got to me and I suffered a massive heart attack and died." The clerk thanked him and sent him on to the next office. The second applicant said that his last day was his worst. "I was on the roof of an apartment building working on the AC equipment. I stumbled over my tools and toppled off the building. I managed to grab onto the balcony rail of a 9th floor apartment but some idiot came rushing out on the balcony and bashed my hands with a flower pot. I fell but hit some awnings and bushes and survived, but as I looked up I saw a huge chest falling toward me. I tried to crawl out of the way but failed and was hit and killed by the chest." The clerk couldn't help but chuckle as he directs the man to the next room. He is still giggling when his third customer of the day enters. He apologizes and says "I doubt that your last day was as interesting as the fellow in here just before you." "I don't know" replies the man, "picture this, I'm buck naked hiding' in this cedar chest....."
  23. Did someone from this forum participate with a blue Venture and a trailer? I found a post on the TexasCHLForum. http://texaschlforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=83&t=44239&sid=4e58e7cbd93475f19d1b40a455cf76f2
