  1. Took the bike out for the day yesterday. everything was fine at 1st, but towards the end of the day, the clutch didn't want to work. The only way I could get it to engage was by pumping the handle before I started downshifting. Would an air bubble cause this? The fluid level at the handle is good. Also, I have a vibration at 70 or better while riding 2 up. would the superbrace take care of this? got a new pirelli on the front and a new dunlop elite3 on the back.
  2. How or where do you lube the throttle cables on a 2nd gen? Mine seem to be binding and if I turn the handlebars completely to the right, the throttle will stay where ever it was left at. There is some sort of junction, plastic oval shaped device on left side under gas tank. This has a hole in it. Should I squirt 'Fluid Film' or 'WD-40' in there or take it apart? It seems awkward to take apart as the screws are on the back side towards the frame. Please help as I am hopelessly lost here and I was hoping to go for a ride in the morning. Thanks.
  3. found fluid on floor under left fork, or anti-dive and can't tell which one it is coming from. There is a fluid trail down the fork, but the amount that is on the floor seems to be way too much to be from the fork. The diameter of the fluid on the floor is approx. 4"x6" and just showed up in a short period of time. Is there anything on the anti-dive unit that could possibly leak that much and if so is it brake fluid? I know this is vague and funky sounding but it's the only way I can explain it. Any help will be appreciated. Don H.
  4. Here is a couple of tricks that Rocket used when he completely overhauled my bike from top to bottom. For bleeding the brakes he uses a turkey baster with the end filed down and then threaded into the under seat resevoir so you can see how much fluid you have when flushing your brake lines. Also he had a tool put together that really helps when putting a clutch back together. Thank again Paul, I really appreciate all the help and sweat you put into my bike! Brian
  5. Hello Everyone. New memeber here! I've got a problem with my 83' Venture. I put it to bed last season and the back brake worked fine. When I got it out this past weekend I found that I have nothing...nada...no brake pressure nothing. I've tried everything. I've read over the forum, but I'm still puzzled. I've added DOT3 brake fluid to all the master cylinders. I've tried bleeding the rear with a MightyVac and I can get fluid out (along with bubles) but still not brakes. I've taken everything appart. I've blown through all the hoses. They all seem solid, no leaks. The only place that I think might be a problem is the piston on the pump. (if that's what its called.) It makes a strange "sucking" noise. I'm just not sure if that's what its supposed to do. LOL Any help or advice would be great! Thanks, Jack H. in Akron Ohio
  6. My front left/back brake was locking up after about 25 miles of riding. This morning I decided to do cowpuc's brake master cleaning. Everything went pretty good till I checked the reservoir level. Popped out the filler bolt and all I see is the rubber diaphragm. Don't see any fluid at all. I just picked up this bike (86) and would really like to get this fixed. Will I need to remove the reservoir completely and if so how bad is that job? It looks pretty tight just to get the top cover off. Thanks
  7. so i've read two threads on this and i think i will try to put in new fluid. my question is, How? where is the resevior? where is the bleeder? what type of clutch fluid? does anyone have any pictures of this? this is all new to me so assume that i know nothing, because i don't. thanks for the help...
  8. I did a search regarding this, but did not find one. I bought my bike last October ('08) with only 1 mile on the odometer. It is an '07. The Service Manual stated to replace coolant and brake fluid every certain # of miles OR 24 Months. I may be closing in on 24 Months, but I only have 3200 miles on the bike. Do I still need to replace Brake Fluid and Coolant this year or Wait until I reach my 2nd anniversary of ownership?
  9. Good evening fellow members. I am looking for a source for a rear brake master cylinder rebuild kit for my 88 VR. I haven't called the stealer yet. I flushed the fluid in the rear and that didn't seem to help. Even if I pump it, it doesn't have much stopping power. I replaced the pads with new EBC HH pads and still no improvement so I am guessing the next logical step is to rebuild the master and see if that doesn't solve the "barely braking" problem. When rebuilding the master is it also advised to take the reservoir off and flush it out as well or just do a good flushing of the fluid after the rebuild? I also have searched the net and can't find a source for the grommet that goes around the headset cable that goes through the plastic on the fairing. I looked on J&M Corp website but no luck. Does anyone know where I could get one of these grommets? Thanks in advance for all your help.
  10. I bleed my clutch today and I got all the old fluid out that I could by doing it this way. The bottom of the reserve looked like liquid lead in it. I took a rag and got all of that out that I could. The fluid looked like strong coffee or a pepsi. The clutch slipped a little bit today when I went to pick up my son from school, but it was better than yesterday. I am going to try to post a picture of what the fluid looked like. Is there a better way to change the fluid than the way I done it? If so let me know. Appreciate the help. Thanks hairman
  11. I'm looking for the inside half of a saddlebag for an 84 Venture. If anyone has 1 kicking around please send me a PM. Will also consider buying the whole thing if anyone has them. I had a bottle of brake fluid leak and it ate the bottom out of it!!! :snow2:Getting tired of winter had freezing rain last night.
  12. Thanks!!! I got the mufflers on. I decided to drain the rearend fluid while I had everything off. I had to level the bike up so that all the fluid would drain out. I decided to hook a bungy cord to the bike to hold it up while I took the muffler off that side. I put my ratchet on the muffler clamp and pushed against it and the bike fell over. I broke my mirror. The mufflers sound GREAT. Thanks hairman:thumbsup2:
  13. :bowdown:Hey - Stupid question here...I just changed brake fluid, front and rear, and I would like to change my clutch fluid, but I can't seem to find the bleeder screw. Can anyone help me out here, and post a picture, or email a picture to thelonegray@yahoo.com? Much appreciated. Thanks!
  14. I have a '98 Royal Star 1300, 20k miles, lightly driven, no synthetic oil ever used, clutch slips intermittently, replaced clutch spring and fibers, steeles were mint, still slipped, started looking at clutch master cylinder, I flushed and bled the clutch fluid. I ran it hard with no slipping for 15 minutes then it started slipping again, any ideas? I'm stumped guys. Thanks for any input!
  15. This morning on my way in to work, my low fluid indicator light came on, on my 89. At lunch I checked the front fluid level and it was fine. I have no visible signs of fluid seepage at the front calipers and the rear is dry also. Is the indicator light also tied into the rear brake reservoir? I hope that there is a simple fix, I'm not looking forward to chasing wires! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Andrew 89 VR 01 V-star
  16. Hi folks. I have a 'new to me' 1989 Venture and there is still a lot of snow on the ground here. I just got it home recently, and fired it up as I just couldn't wait. My problem is I noticed the fluid level in the clutch reservoir is not visible. The clutch works, as I drove the bike onto the trailer to get it home. More than likely it is just low, and I should top it off. However, this bike has been sitting since last fall and I am thinking perhaps this fluid has leaked out since then. If I refill the reservoir, where would it be likely to leak out again, bottom near the clutch area? I am kinda ahead of myself looking for problems that may not be there, but everything else on the bike is up to snuff so it makes me wonder. Any and all help greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  17. My red bike has an issue with the f/b fluid level sensor float switch. I seem to have to fill the reservoir too full of fluid to satisfy it. If I put in what it seems to want, it over flows when I put on the lid. If I put in fluid just to the level indicated on the sight glass, it doesn't satisfy the level switch and I get the red flashing CMS etc. Is this common? Thanks, Brian H
  18. Hello everyone. This is my first post and I will make it quick and painless. I got my bike home from the shop yesterday(from which it remains with rear brake issues but I am trudging through them myself) went to add some fluid to the rear brake fluid reservoir only to run into an issue. The nipple(I'll call it that for lack of a better word) that seats the bolt on the reservoir snapped off the reservoir. If you are familiar with the rear reservoir I'm sure you know what I am describing. I've got the shop in search for a new reservoir (at no cost to me). If it happens that they cannot find one, can it be welded back on, or epoxied or liquid steeled back into place. I know it's not under pressure, but does anyone out there have any experience with this type thing? I can get the reservoir but I have to buy the master cylinder as well and I don't want to go through that expense. thanks in advance. mAm:crying:
  19. 1983 venture. Front right brake = work perfect! back brakes and left front = nothing. Bled the front left, squirts out brake fluid. Bled back, squirts out fluid. Did that for about an hour, nothing. petal goes all the way down. Came here and read everything i could find about 1st gen brakes.. seems others had this problem also.. found there is supposed to be a bleeder up by the forks? took off front fairing. Found what apears to be a valve up under there? No bleeder looking thing like i saw in a pic just a bolt? what the heck! bled that too, about 8oz of fluid.. Breaks still go all the way down.. bled front and back again.. all squirt real good. Brake still all the way down.. no stopage (that a word?) at all when i roll it back and forth. :crying: so 3+ hours of bleeding and about 16oz of fluid and still no brakes? Am i doing it wrong? i have bleed brake on a car before but never a bike, and never a linked system like this.. What do i do next? Help! lol
  20. I am having problems with my clutch and hope someone can give me advice on how to address the problem. The clutch starting functioning poorly on a ride a few days ago. I checked the fluid level and it was low. Added some fluid and the clutch started working well. A fews days later, on another ride, I encounterred the same problem. The fluid reservoir was almost empty. I placed a piece of cardboard under the bike when I parked it and my suspicions were confirmed. There is a fluid leak that is causing me to lose brake fluid. Has anyone encountered this problem before and what are some things I should know in resolving this issue? Rick
  21. Hi everyone, I just picked up my first gen Venture from my mechanic yesterday and we are both at a loss over the brake fluid warning light. The bike was in for a rear master cylinder rebuild. The rebuild went fine with Yamaha orig parts, fluid was topped off, system "burped" or bled to make sure no air in the lines....and the sensor and warning light remain on. Front brakes also checked, good fluid levels, no air in lines.....sensor and warning light remain on. Took the bike for a test ride, brakes are great, responsive, no squishiness in rear pedal or front brake handle. So now Im wondering....is there a reset that has to be done after the maintenance has been performed? Paul george0fthejungle Firstgen VR Gold
  22. The other day b4 I left home my wife and I were pulling out of an ice cream parlor in town. Stupid me thought the bike was in 1st gear but as I pulled out I realized it was in 2nd. This made for a slower start and a wobble. As I looked back and saw a car approaching quickly,I decided to stop. I must have grabbed too much front brake and the bike went over onto the left crash bar only, with my wife still sitting on the bike. She qickly got off so I could pick it up ,and as I did I noticed a puddle of anti-freeze on the ground the size of a 50cent piece. I couldn't see any damage and no idiot light ever came on. I proceeded to drive home aprox.4 mi. with no issues and haven't started it since. Question: Is there sometype of overflow that could have leaked the fluid? Or is there no way this should have leaked any fluid unless I broke or damaged something. Thx in advance for all your input on this. Cap:bang head:
  23. Now that I'm going thru the process of cleaning the carbs with seafoam its time to tackle problem # 2: Brakes Before I took the 84 off the road last year the brakes were spongie and leaked fluid. Now the fluid leaked out somehwere on the handlebar down the side of the fairing. In reading the posts it looks like the next step is to break it all down and flush and clean the entire system First question: do I start high and work towards the back of the bike? When removing the hand lever/resovoir, what's the best way to clean it all? is there some kind of solvent. I read blowing out with air is good too Thanks in advance Jim
  24. My clutch lever is engaging about 1/4 inch off the grip and the lever has a lot of free play in it. Fluid level is OK and the fluid in the reservoir looks clean. (The level was a bit low and some fluid was added about a month ago.) Should I flush it out and rebleed the system to cure the problem? Also, is there a free play adjustment (on the slave cylinder or elsewhere that could have come loose)? I can't find anything in the service manual but maybe I missed it. Has anyone else had this problem?
  25. Thanks to everyone's encouragement in a recent post I made in the "watering hole" forum I picked up the '89 venture from my dad over the weekend. With the bike on the center stand, in gear with the clutch lever engaged I am not able to spin the rear wheel. Looking at the fluid in the master cylinder, the fluid is very dark. I'll start by replacing the fluid and bleeding the clutch. If that does not fix it what are my next steps? Thanks in advance. ~Eric
