  1. I have discovered that my speedometer is off. Someone told me that by changing the rear tire size this will help fix this. Does anyone know if this is true or even possible?
  2. MY 2009 RSV had a fuel smell even when gas was shut off for hours after it was shutdown. Should it take the dealer over two weeks to get parts to fix this? he said 3 to 5 days for a carb gasket?
  3. Went to the Gastown motorcycle show 'n Shine yesterday. Loads of amazing bikes there and so many people came out as the weather was hot. Sorry, no pics...forgot the camera at home. ENNYHOO ... Honda Canada was doing demo rides so Nina & I got to take a spin on a Wing. Now this was the second time I rode a newer Wing but the first time for Nina to ride. Most of the demo was in heavy city traffic but did get to see how it handled on the highway and in corners as well...even a tight 90 degree one at 3 times the posted limit (which was 20 km/h) and I think I dragged something on that one! Well, for those who have one, you know what I'm talkin about here. This bike is nothing short of a breeze to drive. It takes the corners effortlessly. It weaves thru heavy traffic on the freeway without even thinking about it. I looked where I wanted to go and it was if the scoot read my mind because in a flash, I was there. And the POWER!!! It's awesome! Slow speed balance is far superior to our RSMV ... even just coming to a stop ... I could practically come to a full stop and not even put my foot down... Oh yeah, and REVERSE sure was nice getting it back into the parking spot! The downside ... and I only have two. Nina found the seat too "recliner style" ... if that makes any sense. She prefers to sit up straighter but the seat seemed to force her to slouch. ... no biggie... we can fix that. In opposite, I found the seat caused me to sit up straighter ... but that is ok except the handlegrips were lower than I like ... again, no biggie... we can fix that. So, in as much as WE like our RSMV .... sometime before next summer it will most likely be replaced with a WING. See ya at that other "dark side".
  4. It has happened two or three times now. I'll just be riding along and look down at my Zumo 550 and notice the screen has locked up. I can't even turn the thing off when that happens. To fix the problem I must remove the unit from it's mount then remove the battery. Once the battery is reinstalled it works like new. WTH! Anyone experience this? What's the fix? or should I just get a 660?
  5. My Zumo 660 (I believe) just decided to stop providing verbal directions. I have taken it out and placed it in the auto cradle and it still won't talk. Everything else seems to work OK. Anyone had an issue like this? If so, how did you fix it?
  6. I bought this 90 VR earlier this year and with the help of the threads on this site I've been able to fix just about everything, but now I'm down to my last two things and hopefully you guys and gals can give me a little direction... First, I just put new fork seals in, and I"m not to proud to admit it was my first time doing this. But here is the issue, once in a while it sounds like the springs are hitting bottom, it's especially prominent when I'm braking and hit a bump it sounds like a gunshot sometimes. I filled the forks up to the specified level, so I'm not sure what this could be, short of possibly the anti-dive locking up? It's got me stumped but that really wasn't very hard to do... Second, the rear brake makes a chattering sound, It's not a constant chatter, usually when I'm down to a slow speed. I can't hear it when I brake at speed, and I've even run it around without my helmet on to try and hear it. I'm going to take the rear master off this week and see if I can see anything obviously wrong with it. the brakes seem to work fine it's just making this weird sound. Other than these two things the bike is great, I ran it out to Moab a couple weeks ago and it's a dream on the highway and in the curves it keeps up with my kids R1. I don't mind spending the time or money to fix it up it didn't cost me much to start with.. Thanks in advance for all your insight.. . Bob
  7. What the heck could have caused this? I am guessing someone hit it. The saddlebag guards are not damaged. Wife thought it might be stress from towing the trailer. I have towed it 3-4 times. 1st time for a couple hours. The other times were pretty much 30-45 speeds 55 or less. So not really sure that could have done it but never know. It is cracked all the way through starting top right and going towards bottom left almost all the way to the bottom. And the other question. How to fix? Can I use some epoxy on the inside as a temporary fix?
  8. OK folks, I got a sticky kick-stand switch that is aggervating the mess out of me.lol Tried WD-40, white spray grease and no luck. It doesn't come all the way out and make contact lately...was just once in a while but now it is every time. Anyone got a good fix for this or no where I can get one new or used? Thanks in advance, Roy
  9. Doing the 2nd gear fix on my 83. I've read numerous posts here on different parts to order. Is there a " kit " from Yamaha that contains the minimum parts to order?
  10. Broke a second drive-belt on my Road star in a year &3months- a week ago Just got it back Fri. but now it needs new pulleys as they are worn and that is why the belt broke(mechanic).Got 30,000 or so on belt that broke spring of 09 and 20,000 or so on this one. Other shop says not to ride with the new belt and old pulleys and mechanic that changed it said I could?????????? Phantom wife says fix it (so no replacement bike to fix old 87\\for now)Have to wait till Tues. to see how long to get back pulley(on back order)Back pulley is $432can and front is $122 plus 3 1/2 hrs labor
  11. Well it fianlly happened, second gear has been popping out, well when I left for work this morning went to shift into third gear and it wouldnt go in, downshifted to second, no problem, down to first no problem, went back up through the gears, still will not go into third, had to turn around and get the other scoot out to go to work, glad it didnt happen after I got halfway there. I have been knowing I needed the split washer fix, well now looks like I am forced into it, thank goodness I have the other bike to ride, the bummer is finally got everything working right on the 1st gen, and this happens, guess I will start tearing it down either this weekend or next. I will have to go back and find that excellent tech article about doing "The Fix". At least this is the last thing that needs to be done to make her good again!!! Got to get some help over to pull the engine out, maybe I can get 86er and Wingman to help in that area, maybe between the 3 of us we can geterdone.
  12. Got my 86 back from the shop today with a new-to-her motor, an 89 that incidently is in perfect condition. All four cylinders test to stock compression and better yet, this is one heck of a quiet running motor. Got her home and assembled all the other stuff and took it on a good long ride. Whoa, I am impressed; runs like new, smooth, lots of power, and clean. Love it. I've heard these motors are bullet proof. Well they aren't. The original motor developed either a piston slap or a wrist pin knock and rather that fix a motor that had well over 100k, even though the PO said 24K, I picked up this one from hessforless. I replaced a motor in an 83 by myself about 3 years back and I'll never take that on again. Anyway, I just wanted to share this great experience with all. Now I again have two great running, great looking sleds in the garage.
  13. I have an '02 midnight venture, the bottom of the travel case or trunk is cracked around the bolt holes,I fixed it for now, I'd like more permanent fix since replacing is close to $900.00 any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks, smokeeater:fireman:
  14. Looks like another small fix-em up on the 2000 MM RSV I bought last month. The petcock doesn't stop the flow of fuel. Discovered when I parked the bike after a long ride, noticed the shutoff was still in the off position... yet I didn't starve for fuel. Confirmed on purpose again. I suspect I need a new petcock assembly. I could probably slap one of the carb vaccum caps on the petcock if I needed to remove the tank before its fixed. Has anyone seen this before? Is it worth trying to fix? Is there a fix that might easily succeed that anyone has tried? On a 10 year old bike it might be worth getting a new petcock with new internal screen filters anyway... ????? Thoughts & suggestions appreciated.
  15. This has to be the most awesome day for a ride,,,, an all day ride,, and we could do just that,,,, except we promised to help out our youngest in St. Catherines fix up her yard and fix her lawn mower,,, and put in an outdoor plug and plant some plants,,,, so we will be tied up today,,,,, bummer,,,,,but hey, family comes first so she tops our list today,,, maybe ice-cream this evening on the way home, after all it is a Canadian Holiday. Did a 200 k ride yesterday,, just so we wouldn't feel tooo bad today. Enjoy your day folks, couldn't ask for better conditions, no matter what you're doing. Oh Ya she lives on Grass Ave,, not hard to find once you get there (my van will be there) incase you have excess energy.

    brakes?

well finished what me and a friend could do on the bike where not the greatest mechanics in the world. but here is what we finaly got done after dealing witha shady mechanic from before 1 we got the tires mounted new dunlops same as origional 2 rotors from pinwall installed all 3 of them. and let me say what a great place to get parts. 3 fresh new plugs and cleaned the caps 4 fresh oil 5 brand new brake pads ok now heres the problem the dash shows the brakes fluid thing its on all the time not flashing just on?? brakes are great so not sure what we done wrong? also still a little poping and rough idle i need to get these carbs sync. all in all she running good not great but good. but like willie says on the road again. now to install the radio. old one works but missing buttons and that great cassette gave up the ghost got one of them too. then install the false tank. old one needs some repairs to the fuel door and the tab that holds it. need to fix that but got a replacement not same color. but going to fix the old one as it has a mural that a friend did before he passed away. but i can say im on the road with the venture. and with time and good friends here i will get it right.
  18. Jazzed up my 05 with a new chrome radiator grille and some pinstriping. Can't afford nothing new anymore, might as well fix the old girl up.
  19. Sam Almgren came over from Ga today to try and help me fix my dim highbeam. Thanks Sam!!. Alas we (he) had no luck! Actually Sam seems to think the computer module has a problem since I don't have 12 V going to the high beam. Anyone have one of them dar puppies laying around? In the absence of that, a Mk1 dash with 30K miles? After that, anyone interested in disecting the old one or trying to fix it (Dingy?)?
  20. Broke one of the bolts for mounting the drivers seat today. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? Any help would be appriciated.
  21. Almost got swacked twice yesterday. One from a lady that swerved into my lane and the other from a guy that just pulled out in front of me. How many lights do we need? I run with my high beams on in the daytime, but I'm thinking "flashing lights" or something especially in high traffic areas. Can you fix the front turn signals to flash on a RSTD? What is the best light setup? Thanks for any suggestions!
  22. I'm sure this has been addressed before, but I can't find it. Is it possible to dis-connect the cassette player from an '89 VR and still have the radio work? I sure would like to get rid of the cassette player as it doesn't work and don't want to fix it. Would love to add an MP3 player in its place. Any comments or suggestions?
  23. My wife complains that the back rest on my 07 RSTD is uncomfortable. I attend to agree. It sits you too straight up and has no recline. The two back rest rizers also should be possioned about two inches rearward. Has anyone else have the issue? Is there a fix? Would a Venture rear seat set-up work on a RSTD? Any assistance to could afford would be helpful. Thanks
  24. A friend of mine has a 1999 Venture that has a air leak in his rear shock. Is their any fix for this or just get another shock. If a different shock is the fix what years will work?
  25. Is it normal for the radio on a 83 venture to only work on A M side. Tried to clean all the buttons with electric cleaner but it did not work. I looked on ebay but the prices was a little high.(my opinion) Is there a fix for these or is it the nature of the beast. It is not a big deal but i like it all to work if its on the bike. Doug
