  1. I mentioned this in another post, but I thought I would post again and ask another way. The fairing tabs that hold the windshield are a known problem with the Venture. In fact, many of you have said that EVEN NEW VENTURES could very well have the tabs already cracked or broken. I had asked if it was important to have the fairing replaced, and a couple of you said yes, get it fixed or it would get worse. I have two issues with getting fixed...first, because I have done some wiring under the fairing I am afraid they will hassle me about the tabs and accuse me (like others have been accused) of breaking them myself. The OTHER issue I have is that I did my wiring the way I wanted it done and I don't want them messing with it. OK, so no my other point about not getting the tabs fixed...if someone owned a Venture and did NONE of their own work, and based on those statements that the tabs were of poor design and cracked on their own, isn't it possible for this breakage to go for a LONG period of time and MANY miles without knowing anything was wrong? What do you think? Wally
  2. OK...after a brief scare with my windshield (my wife threw it away and took it to the dumpster, but was able to recover it)...I decided to go ahead and do some things to to the bike today. I have several questions!! First thing was removing the fairing, I did notice that both tabs were broken and I know this has been discussed a lot, but if left broken, do they really pose any danger...or should I DEFINITELY have the fairing replaced? When removing the fairing, I also noticed that one of the grommets was missing helps stabilize and rattle proof the fairing...is that a standard size grommet or is there a special part number? Replacing the lamp with the Silverstar IS A PAIN...even with the fairing split!! Also the BIG rubber cover has threads in it...but it doesn't screw on does it. Also, even with the fairing split, I had a hard time getting my hand up through there...removing the adjustment knob did help. Maybe I am missing something, but any further tips would be greatly appreciate. Is there a better tape to use besides electrical tape that is not as effected by HEAT and COLD...the adhesive doesn't seem to keep the connections tight. I also was trying to track down why my running lamps no longer worked...when they installed them they used the OLD fashioned glass 10A fuse. I am going to replace that with chip kind, is that what most of you have done? And finally, I installed the F4 Customs Windshield. WOW...very nice. VERY clear too. Sitting behind it is almost like sitting on the bike without a shield at all...it's that clear. I am very pleased. So, I'm looking forward to some answers, thoughts, suggestions and tips. Wally
  3. While I had my fairing split to work on replacing my headlamp bulb and doing some cleaning and general maintenance, I removed my deflectors to clean them real good. I reinstalled them last night using a touch of Loc-Tite Blue on the phillips-head bolts and snugged them up without overtightening. This morning when I replaced the bulb and went to re-assemble the fairing, the deflectors literally fell off their mounts. It appears that the Loc-Tite disintegrated the ABS plastic protrusions that the screws mount into on the inner fairing. It's hard to describe, but the plastic turned to black crumbles. I've never seen anything like it. Has anyone ever experienced this with Loc-Tite Blue? My inner fairing will no longer be able to hold the deflectors, unless I can rig something up. This sucks. The pic shows the right side deflector mounted as of last night. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  4. I'm not sure I have a fuel pump problem or not. I've had it down for a couple of days for some mods. Lowered the front forks and put in some Ponch gauges. I had the fairing completely off and back on. I started it and let it run to test the gauges and everything seemed to do just fine. I could hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds when I turned the ignition on. Now after I put the fairing back on and finished up with everything I turn the ignition on and there is no fuel pump sound. It still starts and runs but I don't get any pump sound. Now here's the question......What's wrong with it? One more thing I have an 94 Road Star and I took the fuel pump off of it, some time ago, does anyone ever run RSV's without fuel pumps on a permanent basis?
  5. Looks like i am finally going to get started on the repair/restoration of my 88VR. I am looking for fairing halvs in good or poor condition but repariable, I might even consider pieces that i can use to make what i have already got whole. Probably going to need the dash panels too... Just wanted to give Y'all first shot before i go to the web in seach of parts.
  6. I have a 96 Royal Star with 16k miles on it and I reaaly wish it had a fairing and maybe a trunk. Does anyone know if I can add one and if so where I would find one?
  7. I was having problems with my audio system, 2008 venture, responding to the commands that I would punch in on the control located on the handle bars. It got progressively worst until one day it went totally out. The bike is under warranty so I took it to the Yamaha dealer where I purchased it. It should be noted that I found that people working on the audio system are really not educated on how it works and how to troubleshoot the system. Its change black boxes so to speak. So they tried the new control and that did not work. So they were on the phone with Yamaha techs for hours talking about what to do next. They took the front fairing off and found that the wires going to fuel tank for the intercom (rider) were all cut up. The wires had been routed wrong and got into the steering area and slowly were being smashed and cut to pieces by steering the bike. They ordered a new harness for the headset and installed same. The problem was still NOT repaired. Again on the phone with Yamaha techs and yamaha sent in a new amp that is located under the front fairing. That took care of the problem. The system now works great and responds immediately to the commands. This whole event took about two months to get worked out driving back and forth. In short everyone should remove their front fairing and take tie ties and really look at how their wiring is being run to prevent this from happening. I did write a letter to Yamaha about the routing of the wiring under the fairing and what had happen. I believe that the wires being cut on the headset cord shorted out the AMP blowing same. It only took two months and about 400 miles of riding back and forth waiting for parts and etc. I would also like to note that there are TWO fuses in the audio system. One fuse is in the battery compartment and the other is behind the RIGHT UNDER COVER. So if your having audio problems be sure to check both fuses. I hope that this will help someone. Please check all the wires running under the front fairing. It could prevent you from having the same problem. Yamaha techs also advised that the connections on the amp, which are many work loose so be sure to check them as well. Good Luck, DanC
  8. Anyone ever have this issue? See pics. What's odd is that the DEALER (who remains nameless at this point) said he replaced the complete INNER FAIRING piece about 6 weeks ago (under warranty) to resolve the exact same issue. I cracked the fairing to replace a stereo cable...and low and behold...the windshield bracket-to-inner-fairing mounts are completely broken. Thoughts? Is this a COMMON issue that all RSVs have? Or am I just "lucky"?
  9. A couple of weeks ago I posted that the tabs in the fairing where the bolt go that hold the windshield in place were broken. Today Berkeley Yamaha replaced that part of the fairing. While they were in there they found some other stuff that was jacked up and fixed that too. Cost to me $0. I must say, their reputation of going above and beyond is really true. Thanks to everyone that suggested I take it back to the dealer.
  10. I am looking at a 1st Gen Venture Royale, 1990 model, but it is out of state and I have been communicating with the owner. Everything was looking good until he mentioned the air compressor was disconnected (or not working) and some small cracks in the fairing, but offered to take some pictures of it. Well, the cracks don't look small to me and they don't look like an easy fix. I talked with a M/C mechanic who does alot of VR work and he felt, without seeing the pictures, that being plastic versus fiberglass, the only way to really fix it and look good, would be to find replacement parts. The mechanic I talked with had seen the bike and rebuilt the carbs and other items, but the owner didn't want to pay for the other items to be fixed. So, the mechanic doesn't know the cause of the compressor problem, and therefore can't estimate the repair. I am attaching the pictures, I hope. Can anyone tell me what would need to be done to fix the fairing or compressor? If nothing reasonable is available, I may have to walk away from this one. Thanks for any input!
  11. I split the fairing yesterday for the first time to install Mic Mutes. When I went to remove the windshield I found three of the six tabs on the outer fairing were broken. Does anyone have a fix for that?
  12. Yesterday I got my MC jack modified to fit under my RSV, so today I decided to start the process of lowering the front forks and adjusting the steering bearing. When I got the front shell of the fairing one of the six bolt appeares to have the end of an allen wrench broken off in it. So I thought I could just drill it out. Nope! The broken allen head is to hard to drill. I then thought I could use my dremel and grind a slot for a screw driver but the bolt is the lower right and recessed into the fairing so the cutting wheel will not fit. So here I am look for help:8: on how to get the bolt out. Oh ya the bike has a light bar. Whats the trick on getting to the bolts? They are too close to the fairing to get to.
  13. I'm getting really frustrated trying to add a cup holder on my '83 Royale. There just isn't any handlebar real estate sufficient to the task. I saw where someone had screwed one into the lower fairing, but I'm reluctant to go that route. Does anyone know of an alternate solution?
  14. i have a 2005 royal star tour deluxe i need to know if i can put a venture fairing on my bike; if so what would i have to do?
  15. Getting ready to purchase a Premeux Fairing. Looks like a good product but I have never seen one up close. If anyone has had experience with one, let me know what you think. They have the detach set-up like stock.
  16. ok maybe not glue but what do you use to repair cracks in the fairing and stuff? i have heard of plastic repair, pvc glue, plastic bond ect ect. i have a C shaped crack in my right side fairing where the lower the air tub goes in i think im right there? its the vent on the main part of the big side fairing that help? i dont want to have to remove the fairing and try to get to it from the inside. so can i just repair it from the out side? also is 40 mpg fair for the bike. i did find my poping its a exhaust leak down where on the right where it goes in to the collector main out side one not back one. the chrome shield is missing on that side and a little hole is in the pipe can this be welded?. i can live with it. right now. all in all with all the help i have gotten here. the bike is running well and comming along. and i did one thing i ran out of gas right in the yard but gauge showed one bar? hmmmm then parked it and nothing no bars? put it on reserve still no bar but fired up. so how much gas is in this sucker LOL i think ill just get a can and get some gas as nearest gas is 5 miles. thats what i get for playing and not paying attention.
  17. Anyone have experience with this fairing for a 2006 RSTD? It is pricy, but looks great and having a sound system would be a plus. I would like to see one on a bike before I purchase. I live in the Cincinnati, Oh area and do not mind taking a ride to see one within a reasonable distance. Thanks
  18. Today...I noticed that the windshield on my 08 RSV was a little "loose". So I pulled the top fairing screws and removed the chrome trim. Now I can see why the windshield was loose! Missing 2 screws COMPLETLY and 3 screws just about ready to fall out. The screw that mounts in the hole in thw windshield is one of the screws that is MIA. Closed inspection reveals that screw hole in the fairing is completely broken off. (insert swear word here). Since it looks like the screws may have fallen inside the fairing, I decide to crack the fairing to look for the screws. The GOOD...I found one of the screws. The BAD??? The crossmember that the windshield screws actually attach to is held in place by a frickin' TIE WRAP! The bolt holes that SHOULD be used for mounting the windshield crossmember are rusty...which means that the two flange bolts where never installed. Worse yet, where the windshield crossmembers connects to the inner fairing, those are completely broken off as well. AND...two of the tabs on the Chrome Trim are broken.... The dealer I bought the bike from went out of business several months ago, and the dealer I'm currently has already replaced the turnk lid and left lower fairing due to cracks and broken pieces. He's gonna have a stroke..cause now he will have to replace the entire fairing (both inner and outer). Has anyone else encountered these types of issues? I know that the bike is still under warranty, but I'm pretty sure the dealer is going to question how these things got broken. Do you think these "failures" are due to Yamaha "engineering" or the fault of the 16-year old mechanic making $8 bucks an hour to uncrate and assemble these bikes at the dealership?? Me...I'm on the fence!
  19. http://www.recklessmotorcycles.com/roadstar.htm Anybody familiar with Reckless Fairings? I am thinking of putting a fairing on my tour deluxe.
  20. i'M LOOKING FOR A LEFT FRONT FAIRING FOR MY '87 VR. I ONLY NEED THE REAR 6 INCHES OF IT SO IT DOSN'T MATTER IF THE FRONT AND BOTTOM IS DAMAGED. i WILL CUT AND FIT & WELD IT INTO THE HOLE IN THE LEFT REAR CORNER JIM O'D AUSTRALIA
  21. I'm trying to secure the front ties, but the tie down cords from the handle bars are making contact with the clear plastic pieces under the fairing. The anchors on the trailer are not adjustable. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to prevent damage.
  22. My lower left fairing mysteriously got cracked. I came out to the garage one morning and there it was. Does anyone here have one at a reasonable price?
  23. Can anyone tell me the approximate size of the casstte player?? I'm going to get Quickstep to turn it into a storage area, and am going to go to the wreckers and see if something out of the dash of a car would work. But as the fairing has to be cracked open to get a look see I don't want him to do that till I've got something to fit Ta Muchly
  24. Came across these items on E Bay if anyone is in the need...I know what these cost new....don't ask! Keith Lower Right Wind Guard # 160461326156 Fairing # 160461329518 Links wouldn't work for me
  25. Has anyone replaced the throttle cables on a 1988 Venture? Need to know if I have to take the Fairing off... Thanks, J.D.
