  1. (Ring) Them: Hello, @#$#$% Honda, how may I direct your call? Me: Parts department please. Them: Parts. Me: Yes, I’m traveling through and lost an exhaust baffle. I was hoping you had a two inch exhaust baffle in stock. Them: What kind of bike do you have? Me: It’s a 2001 Honda, 1100 Shadow. But it has after-market Cobra exhaust system on it. Them: No. The 1100 Shadow has an inch and three quarters exhaust. That is the size baffle you need. Me: Sorry, but I measured my pipe and it is definitely two inch. It was installed by the previous owner. Them: A two inch exhaust won’t fit on a Shadow! Me: Don’t know what to tell you, but that is what I have. Do you have a two inch baffle in stock? Them: What model number Cobra pipes do you have? Me: (exasperated) I don’t know, they were installed by the previous owner. The baffle doesn’t have to be from Cobra, any two inch baffle will work for me. Them: I have to have the model number to look it up. Me: Do you have ANY baffles in stock? Them: No, we don’t carry exhaust parts in stock, but we can order them and have them for you in about a week. Me: Do you remember I said I was traveling and just passing through? Them: But if you really need it…. Me: Never mind (click) (Ring) Them: Hello, @#$%#@ Harley Davison, how may I direct your call? Me: Parts department please. Them: Parts. Me: Yes, I’m traveling through town and have lost one of my exhaust baffles. Do you happen to have a two inch exhaust baffle in stock? Them: What kind of bike do you have? Me: I have two inch, after market, Cobra pipes. But any brand of baffle will work for me. It doesn’t have to be Cobra. Them: Let’s see here, I show I have a couple baffles in stock, but they are not Cobras. Me: That’s great!! I don’t care about the brand. They are two inch, right? Them: Well… these are inch and three quarters. That is a close as I can get. Me: That’s good but I need two inch. Them: What kind of bike is this going on? Me: Well….it’s a 2001 Honda Shadow, but it has the two inch Cobra exhaust installed. Them: We don’t sell Honda parts. You better call them. You want their number? Me: Never mind (click).
  2. Which Harley exhaust fit the RSV ? Road King only ? Will exhaust off a 2008 Harley Street Glide Fit ?What should I do take pics and measurements ? I can get a set cheap.
  3. Has anyone ever had to change the y pipe on their 02 venture? If so where did you buy it. Also should I change the other side at the same time
  4. Hey guys and girls I recently replaced my full exhaust sytem on my Royal Star Venture (I picked up a full system on ebay for 189dollars which is amazing) My old muffler pipes were rotting inside so I had to change them. The only prob I have is that the pipes are LOUD! Not harley loud but louder than what I would like. They are original Yamaha pipes but the mufflers are aftermarket Baron Pipes with the clamp(I think) Does anyone know of a way to quieten them down, I don't live in an estate so no neighbours but I'm heading to France and Spain this year and I heard they crack down on loud pipes. They have a baffle but it's not great...I think they sound great but that's another matter altogether... Does anyone here have baron pipes? If so, any suggestions on quitening them down! Thanks
  5. Looking for OEM 1st gen, Mrk I left side exhaust. Anybody got one to sell?
  6. tracing donw my excess heat problem i noticed the chrome covering on the exhaust header on the right rear pipe lacks 2 1/8 inches coming to the motor so you see and feel that much pipe is there some way to move the chrome sheild closer to the motor of am i missing a short piece
  7. my wife likes the loud exhaust. used to have a 1500 suzuki intruder with shotgun drag pipes on it. the wife would like the venture to sound similar. any suggestions?
  8. I recently finished doing an upgrade on my handle bars, using the Flanders bars and cables from Buckeye Performace. Using a lot of info form here, everything turned out great. So I am on to my next project: Looking to improve the sound from my 2008 RSV. I have replaced the stock exhaust with Harley Roadking's. but I am interested in trying out some Vance & Hines slip on's. Does anybody here, have that exhaust on thier bike ? I have heard and seen a small clip on youtube, but not a lot of information there. Steve
  9. I saw links to aftermarket slip on and complete exhaust systems. There were sound clip links to listen to. Very interesting, but how about real world performace increases? Has anyone posted results besides sound of the different exhaust systems? HP/ Torque, driveability, heat issues, MPG impact, ease of install, etc.? Thanks. Steve
  10. Hi all I'm just new to the site and have just posted an introduction. I am from Ireland and I drive a Royal Star Venture 2001 1300TF and LOVE it! There are not many here so parts are hard to come by. I am currently looking for a new full exhaust system, not slip ons. My pipes underneath are corroding and although there is only 35,000km on the clock, I would like to keep the bike alot longer. I was quoted by Yamaha Europe for a brand new set of OEM pipes at 2,800dollars. It's crazy money, can anyone recommend a full exhaust system for my model that they know will definitely fit. I really can't afford $2,800 (€2,000) but I don't want to lose the bike. The bike is running great other than a rattling exhaust..Please help! thanks for the time. Gar
  11. You may have heard that I got my bike home last Wednesday following three months of repairs, and that there was a loud backfiring. The dealer had been unable to determine the source, but 5 minutes with Squidley and we had a prime suspect: the dealer hadn't hooked up a vacuum tube to the AIS (I presume). Pic: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3303/5699095405_9f3c32f19e.jpg This particular tube goes to the front, behind the right front exhaust header. We could see the lonely nipple with a mirror. We just couldn't reach it. Squidley says he'll be available to take off the exhaust so that it can be hooked up, hopefully solving the very loud backfire. But isn't this something I could do myself? First, is there an easier way to connect it? Force my daughter into anorexia so that she can reach in, perhaps? Loosen something or other, move it out of the way, tighten back up? I have an RSTD, so the front is somewhat more open than an RSV (I am posting in the RSV forum because it's seen more and almost as applicable). Second, if I do remove the exhaust headers, do I have remove both, or just the front? What all do I have to remove to get to that header bolt? Thirdly, thanks to those of you who will demand that I take the bike back to the dealer to have them fix their shoddy workmanship, but no. I've already been without her for three months, and I can't waste another month having them fix this. Dave
  12. As some of you my remember I had a rear shaft seal go out on my 2007 Midnight Venture and lost a lot of final drive grease before I noticed it. When I went in to investigate I found what looked like the upper pinion bearing gone. I was gonna change it myself but there were several special tools needed to get to that bearing. Plus the Warranty is still good till 2013. I called the dealer and tried to get them to let me bring the final drive but no...no they had the have the entire bike, so I put it back together and borrowed a trailer, then hauled it to the closest dealer. When I dropped it off they told me it would be about a month to fix it. I was sad but left it any way. The next couple of weeks they called and said I had an engine oil leak on the #! cylinder that they were gonna pull the engine to fix it. They said the base gasket was leading? They were gonna replace the drive seal coming out of the engine also. Warranty would cover everything. Ok that sounds good to me. Next week they call and say they waiting on the lower rear pinion bearings cause it came apartt when they removed the pinion to change the front pinion bearing. 4/20 I picked it up after almost 5 weeks at the dealership. Yah:big-grin-emoticon: I hauled it in a short enclosed trailer so I took my windshield off so it would go in it. I also left the rear bags off and after market exhaust (put the stock back on) to keep this stuff from rolloing around in the floor of the repair shop. I carried all the parts, since I was gonna ride it back home. I was putting my windshield back on when I started noticing stuff. Bad stuff.. I inspected the bike... 1. It had a fine coat of oil all over the engine and most of the rest of the bike. 2. The left lower wind vent was cracked. We had some words and they claim that did not happen while it was at the dealership cause they did not work on the brakes. (they pulled the engine and had to disconnect the clutch) I left after they had took some pictures of the "alleged" damage. I had to get out of there as I was heavly armed with lots of ammo and afraid there was gonna be a mass killing if I stayed there much longer. On the way home the bike did not have much power at all (seemed like it had a potato in the exhaust)...the the left floor board seemed to be titled to the left????? The rear end or something is howling..sounds like a 5 ton truck again. Lots of engine noise...maybe valve clicking under hard acceleration. After I got home after 95 miles of hard hard running. I am sick... I cannot not believe this is happening to me. I smell some oil burning some so I immediately get a infrared thermometer to read the temp of the rear end. I read 145 to 165 'F. The exhaust in that area is no more than 120. Oil smell I later learn is coming from the valve covers blowing oil on to the exhaust. I crank up to carry it to a local body shop to see what it is gonna take to get the paint fixed and when I put it into first gear, I notice the entire left floor board moves. I get off and see the bolts about the fall out. That is it...I am scared to ride it now. I inspected the bike again... 4. The left floor board bolts about the fall out. 5. Two bolts missing from the exhaust. 6. Valve cover gaskets leaking at all corners...on even spraying oil on exhaust and left battery cover. 7. Left battery cover got a to the metal scratch about 1 inch long. 8. Clutch seems to be grabbing. Maybe needs bleeding. 9. Chrome clutch over on the right side has a scratch in it like they drug the engine across concrete. . I was scared to ride it now due to all the loose bolts and no telling what else is loose. Pull it in to the shop and start tearing it down. Mainly to get these valve covers to stop leaking and look the timing. 10. The right air filter mounting bolts were finger tight and backed out. 11. Rubber clamp on the air flter housing was loose and spinning, along with the rubber hose that connects it to the intake...these were spinning also. 12. LEft air filter mounting screw was finger tight. 13. clamp on the left front carb missed the carb mount completely and there was a gap you could put your little finger in on the inside of the cab. 14. vaccum line ran through the radiator fan... 15. Found the timing on the rear cylinder off by one tooth front was perfect. I set the float levels in the carbs while I was in there also. I think they might have mixed up the valve shims causing the valve noise, so that is still going on. I did not think to check the valve clearance (since i did not have shims to fix it. and I thinking the timing off was causing the noise...but the valve noise it still there after the timing was corrected. Bike runs a lot better with power now, but still noisy as hell. I tore down the rear end last night and pulled all the exhaust off looking for exhaust leaks. I did the usually grease job on the rear end hoping to quiet it down some. Rear end feels fine and most of the bolts were tight on it... surprise...surprise...it had gear oil in it. Hope to get it back together today to see what the outcome of that is. The dealer wanted me to bring it back to them so they could fix it... and break some more stuff. I think the bike fell off the work stand to the left...left mirror was bad out of adjustment but not damaged. This would explain the broken wind vent and scratches on the edge of the front fairing along with the brake fluid damage. I do not like other folks working on my stuff anyway and I was debating to just swap out the rear end from a VMAX rear end when this happed any way. I may still have to do this to quiet it down anyway. The dealer has agreed to replace the bolts missing as well as the broken lower faring vents but I have not got them yet. What surprised me about all of this...all the mechanics in this shop have gray hair...no kids working back there. I am not sure I can trust this bike any more. I had a trip planned for Colorado but not so sure I can honestly feel secure with it on the road for a week. I believe I will worry about it the entire trip. I am just sick about the bike. So sick I might just sell it to get it out of my shop. I cannot stand to look at it. As you can see in my signature...heavily sedated for your protection, and a certain Yamaha dealer...
  13. I guess my rear exhaust headers are not supposed to glow, but they were yesterday. The plugs do not show signs of running particularly lean but there is some heat getting back there from somewhere. Currently the carbs are off for a full rebuild, and the front exhaust headers too, to get at the starter. I noticed that one of the headers was very loose in the collector, and this would probably be contributing to the "spitting" back through #1 and #4 carbs. I suspect the butterfly valve seals aren't helping much, the intake boots seem to be sound. Anyway ... I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this. I do know that some exhaust headers, on some bikes do have a "glowing" issue, but I didn't think that the Venture Royale had this ... er ... feature. Any thoughts?
  14. Finally took the trailer out for the first time..I notice there is more noise from the exhaust bouncing back off of the trailer. I expected that. But the wife and I also noticed that we could smell the exhaust more. It's hard to tell in the photo but it looks like the exhaust exists the pipes below the trailer so I thought the smell would go right back under the trailer. I wouldn't mind except I'm a little concerned about breathing too much of it in if we get stuck in stop and go traffic...should I be worried or is it fine? Is there an alternative? I see these aren't the stock pipes. Would it help if they were stock? Are the pipes or sleeves you slip on the ends of the pipes that curve outward so the exhaust is shot out to the side instead of the back? And if so, would that help anything? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm new to pulling a trailer on the bike...
  15. On my way to Marcarl's this spring, I ran over something that did a job on my exhaust collector (on the highway at 70mph). Ended up with two fairly large holes on the botom, one with a large dent. Carl tried a patch but that did not hold. I tried more patching with some muffler cement and again, the heat and pressure blew holes in the patch areas. Any reason why I can't weld a patch in place? How important is it to try to straighten out the indent before patching? All comments appreciated!
  16. My last two takes of gas, I have only gotten about 30 mpg in my 05 RSTD. I have consistently gotten 35-38 as long as I have had the bike. Changed plugs and air filters last year, oil is good, nothing different in the bike or riding styles. Took a laser thermometer to measure the exhaust pipes right where the come out of the cylinders. The front two, which are hard to get a reading on because of the shielding, I think I got ~250. The rears I can see the actual pipe and got ~650 on each. Wondering if I just haven't gotten a good reading on the fronts, or if I am actually having some firing issues. Will pull the plugs and check, but wanted opinions on exhaust pipe temperatures.
  17. externally, there are 4 inlet ports, and 2 exhaust ports. internally, there are also 4 "tubes" on the inlet ports and 2 tubes on the exhaust ports.my question is ,would removing or shortening the "internal tubes" , have any serious effect on the overall engine performance? referring mostly to carbs. just jt
  18. Does anyone have any of these lying around that they just don't need. It is the gasket/spacer that goes between the OEM muffler and the exhaust pipe on a tour deluxe or venture. I had a pair of Barons Bag Slash on the bike and they were a direct slip on to the exhaust. The OEMs need this gasket/spacer. Please PM me if you do. Part number 27 and 30 in the diagram. http://images.powersportsnetwork.com/fiche/images/YAMAHA/2006/motorcycles/4552_exhaust.gif
  19. Okay. Yesterday I tried to install the RK mufflers I got. These are 07s if I remember correctly so they do have a cat. I don't know if that makes any difference on installation. I got a pair of the 31-9920 Chrome clamps. I've spread them out as large as I can make them with a screw driver. I go to put the muffler on and I can only get it on so far. There's about 1/4" of the mating pipe showing still. I've tried using a wood block and a hammer but I don't want to damage any of the upstream exhaust by pounding too hard. I'm thinking of the "Y" weld... don't want to crack that in any way. I used a little anti-seize as someone recommended. The end of the muffler seems to be spreading a bit as I push it on. I'm assuming this is normal. I'm also assuming that the clamp is supposed to go on up to the heat shield and none of the existing exhaust pipe is supposed to show. Let me know if you've experienced a similar situation and what worked for you.
  20. this morning i decided to ride my bike to work,39 degrees. as i let it warm up, choke off i noticed a ticking sound out of right exhaust pipe and then seen steam vapors coming out left side exhaust but not right. left exhaust hot -right cold? started my truck to see if both exhaust steamed and they did, duels. rode to work 3 miles , steam vapors gone and both sides hot now.couldnt hear ticking anymore but seems to me both sides should have been steaming togather. you think cly. not firing on right side??? now i worried something wrong. should i be?
  21. OK, I was riding to work today, and I noticed what looked like an RSTD at the light waiting to cross in front of me. As he went by, it looked like he had a billett cover between his cylinders kinda like the Roadstar has for the air cleaner. I may have been mistaken but since he had a 2 in 1 exhaust on the one side and I thought I saw another from the back that would indicate 4 cylinders. It looked awsome and covered up the dead space taken up by carbs inside. Any ideas or am I looking at a Roadstar. Nothing in the yamaha catalog on it
  22. Never again will i remove an exhaust collector from a MKII. finally after TWO years of dealing with "life", i got back to my 86vr. lost my "religion", 14 times, before i got the blamed thing off! NOW! if you haven't had your MKII collector off, you might need to do a double check. mine has rusted out/through, about 3/4 of the circumference on ALL 4 exit pipes.only option is to take it to work and fabricate all new connections. one good thing!!!!!! my baffles are all still good! lol just jt
  23. I increased performance on my ZX11D7 Ninja by adding a Muzzy header (4 into 1) and having a custom 1 into 2 exhaust built by a local guy. I found a Vmax 4 into 2 design that looks promising as a replacement for the Venture collector. I am wondering if Vmax exhaust pipes are bigger . . . Can one of you Vmax guys tell me the header diameter on the Vmax versus the Venture?
  24. Two weeks ago before we got all of our snow I rolled my 83 xvz12 in the house to do a little maintence. I fixed some of the plastics, changed the plugs, fixed the radio and that was it. Rolled it outside and now I have an exhaust leak. I know it is on the back bank, not sure where. Cannot feel any exhaust nor can I see any carbon deposit. How hard is the exhaust to take off for inspection? ANyody ever have anything like this happpen to them? Ideas suggestions. I have a friend who is going to let me roll it in his shop and put it on a lift to work on. Thanks in advance for your help. Dr. Psycho
  25. 1985 VR, started hearing a clappy noise at start up and would quiet down after warmed up. i thought it was the "H" Pipe rattle eveyone complaines about and since it was the end of the season I didnt think too much of it. However I have been going to start the bike up at least once a month and letting it reach operating temp before shutting down. This last time I was starting think maybe my clappy noise was engine related and not exhaust. Below is a link to the video I just shot from a cold start and walk around trying to see if I could pin point where the clappy noise was comming from. I am hoping someone here with more experience is able to recognize the sound and tell me if it's exhaust or engine. I am hopping for exhaust as I plan on doing the HD muffler MOD and weld up the "H" pipe in the early spring. Thanks for your help. please use the link below to see the youtube video.
