  1. My last two takes of gas, I have only gotten about 30 mpg in my 05 RSTD. I have consistently gotten 35-38 as long as I have had the bike. Changed plugs and air filters last year, oil is good, nothing different in the bike or riding styles. Took a laser thermometer to measure the exhaust pipes right where the come out of the cylinders. The front two, which are hard to get a reading on because of the shielding, I think I got ~250. The rears I can see the actual pipe and got ~650 on each. Wondering if I just haven't gotten a good reading on the fronts, or if I am actually having some firing issues. Will pull the plugs and check, but wanted opinions on exhaust pipe temperatures.
  2. So i tried looking around and didn't come up with much, what options are out there for exhaust? I would prefer slipons but would not be opposed to modifying the stock exhaust if there are not better options. I just want to get some sound out of it, not too much but that v4 should sound great with the right set of pipes!!!
  3. externally, there are 4 inlet ports, and 2 exhaust ports. internally, there are also 4 "tubes" on the inlet ports and 2 tubes on the exhaust ports.my question is ,would removing or shortening the "internal tubes" , have any serious effect on the overall engine performance? referring mostly to carbs. just jt
  4. Does anyone have any of these lying around that they just don't need. It is the gasket/spacer that goes between the OEM muffler and the exhaust pipe on a tour deluxe or venture. I had a pair of Barons Bag Slash on the bike and they were a direct slip on to the exhaust. The OEMs need this gasket/spacer. Please PM me if you do. Part number 27 and 30 in the diagram. http://images.powersportsnetwork.com/fiche/images/YAMAHA/2006/motorcycles/4552_exhaust.gif
  5. Okay. Yesterday I tried to install the RK mufflers I got. These are 07s if I remember correctly so they do have a cat. I don't know if that makes any difference on installation. I got a pair of the 31-9920 Chrome clamps. I've spread them out as large as I can make them with a screw driver. I go to put the muffler on and I can only get it on so far. There's about 1/4" of the mating pipe showing still. I've tried using a wood block and a hammer but I don't want to damage any of the upstream exhaust by pounding too hard. I'm thinking of the "Y" weld... don't want to crack that in any way. I used a little anti-seize as someone recommended. The end of the muffler seems to be spreading a bit as I push it on. I'm assuming this is normal. I'm also assuming that the clamp is supposed to go on up to the heat shield and none of the existing exhaust pipe is supposed to show. Let me know if you've experienced a similar situation and what worked for you.
  6. this morning i decided to ride my bike to work,39 degrees. as i let it warm up, choke off i noticed a ticking sound out of right exhaust pipe and then seen steam vapors coming out left side exhaust but not right. left exhaust hot -right cold? started my truck to see if both exhaust steamed and they did, duels. rode to work 3 miles , steam vapors gone and both sides hot now.couldnt hear ticking anymore but seems to me both sides should have been steaming togather. you think cly. not firing on right side??? now i worried something wrong. should i be?
  7. OK, I was riding to work today, and I noticed what looked like an RSTD at the light waiting to cross in front of me. As he went by, it looked like he had a billett cover between his cylinders kinda like the Roadstar has for the air cleaner. I may have been mistaken but since he had a 2 in 1 exhaust on the one side and I thought I saw another from the back that would indicate 4 cylinders. It looked awsome and covered up the dead space taken up by carbs inside. Any ideas or am I looking at a Roadstar. Nothing in the yamaha catalog on it
  8. Never again will i remove an exhaust collector from a MKII. finally after TWO years of dealing with "life", i got back to my 86vr. lost my "religion", 14 times, before i got the blamed thing off! NOW! if you haven't had your MKII collector off, you might need to do a double check. mine has rusted out/through, about 3/4 of the circumference on ALL 4 exit pipes.only option is to take it to work and fabricate all new connections. one good thing!!!!!! my baffles are all still good! lol just jt
  9. Two weeks ago before we got all of our snow I rolled my 83 xvz12 in the house to do a little maintence. I fixed some of the plastics, changed the plugs, fixed the radio and that was it. Rolled it outside and now I have an exhaust leak. I know it is on the back bank, not sure where. Cannot feel any exhaust nor can I see any carbon deposit. How hard is the exhaust to take off for inspection? ANyody ever have anything like this happpen to them? Ideas suggestions. I have a friend who is going to let me roll it in his shop and put it on a lift to work on. Thanks in advance for your help. Dr. Psycho
  10. I increased performance on my ZX11D7 Ninja by adding a Muzzy header (4 into 1) and having a custom 1 into 2 exhaust built by a local guy. I found a Vmax 4 into 2 design that looks promising as a replacement for the Venture collector. I am wondering if Vmax exhaust pipes are bigger . . . Can one of you Vmax guys tell me the header diameter on the Vmax versus the Venture?
  11. I just got my V-Twin clamps and have fabricated mounting brackets for the RK Classic muffler (# 98a) install. My ? is, are there exhaust gaskets that i need to purchase? Are there exhaust gaskets at all? I want to make sure I have everthing before I start the change out. Thanks, Byron
  12. What are the symptoms of a stuck/cracked/burnt exhaust valve? Survey says.....?
  13. Just curious, why are only Road King mentioned as an alternative exhaust as all HD (touring) use the same size pipes. Just wondering as there are countless alternatives for the HD folks to buy, (Rush, Rinehart, Cobra, Sampson, Chrome Works, Barron's, Screaming Eagle... you get the idea) Why wouldn't they fit the RSTD? Advice

Being mechanically inept I could use a little advice. When my son was visiting we went for a ride and he told me my right exhaust was blowing blue under hard acceleration. Today when I went to put the bike away for the winter I did my usual with the sea foam and fired it up to run the gas out of the carbs. There was a lot of blue smoke from the right exhaust and when I held my hand to it it was much hotter than the left one which was not blowing blue. After running for a couple minutes the blue cleared up and the exhaust cooled down. All pistons are running fine. Before I take it to the stealer next spring for a tune up I would like to get an idea of what is happening. Any suggestions?
  15. We came back from our trip to St. Charles MO. and all seemed well. Bike was getting 37mpg hwy. Went over 2,000mi hit some rain at times but all seemed OK, Let the bike sit for a few days in the garage and went out to ride to town noticed that it had no power and at one point it felt like it was going to die but went ahead and rode it to town. Went by the shop and picked up my Temp.gun and did some readings on the exhaust side and here are my readings. EXHAUST READINGS #1 410'F #2 135'F #3 89'F #4 130'F By the readings I'm running on one good cylinder? I bought some more plugs and changed them out, all four plugs were black with carbon but not wet looking. Even after new plugs installed still have same reading on exhaust. I would appreciate any help you guys can give me as where to go for further diagnostic.? Carbs - wiring - ? Buddy
  16. Hi Folks, I think the time has come to sell my 89 VR. Mainly health reasons. Some of you saw her at Dons the past couple of years. 2 tone Burgandy with Harley exhaust. Withalot of help from here on the site I have completed new fork seals and Progressive springs, new rear tire, new brakes, new Fiestick and coax, new AGM battery, complete rear end service including drive shaft, and added Harley Utra Classic exhaust. 32k on her with a lot more in her. I rode to StLouis couple years ago, straight thru and didnt get sore except for the sunburn. I don't have any pics right now and am a novice on how to add one if could but I will try. Its Never been down that I know of , I am the second owner, plastic is very good, paint is sun faded some on the tops. I can take and send pics with my phone if wanted. Please call and we can talk price. Thanks Ron/Pappa Bear
  17. Sure would appreciate it, if someone out there has the right rear exhaust heat shield or header for the quad exhaust found on the RS Boulevard. Mine took a short leap of a long bridge. New to the site and new to the RS. I have about one year with a 1999 Royal Star Boulevard originally with 5k miles and got it for $4k. Haus, lives outside under a cover and is my daily driver. I know the mufflers aren't stock but the headers are. The heat shield fell off on the Peterson Poker Run to Key West last month, made a nice shiny chromy splash. I would rather save the $300 the stealers are charging for an oem replacement. file:///C:/DOCUME%7E1/andraded/LOCALS%7E1/Temp/moz-screenshot.pngfile:///C:/DOCUME%7E1/andraded/LOCALS%7E1/Temp/moz-screenshot-1.png
  18. My hunt for a cheap great sounding exhaust led me to this site. I read the threads about putting the Road King mufflers on the Royal Stars and decided that's what i wanted to do. But while on a parts run to Advance Auto i was browsing the isles because all the guys were busy. When i came across the Thrush glass packs i had one of those i wonder if that would work moments. So i picked up a pair that are 2" ID and 24" long and two reducers that are 2" OD to 1 3/8" ID. When i got home i removed the trunks and then the stock mufflers. The glass packs are really close to the same diameter as the stock mufflers so i cut the mounting bracket off the stockers. I then welded the reducers into the glass packs. Now with the stock mounting brackets bolted to the bike i slid the glass packs onto the head pipes so i could mark where to weld the brackets to the glass packs. After everything was welded up i sprayed the welds with some red engine paint that i had and bolted them up to the bike. I decided the red had to go and wrapped them in black header wrap. I plan on adding some tips soon too. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HP7NazETQEM]YouTube - Royal Star Exhaust[/ame]
  19. I have a buddy with a 1989 Venture Royal. He would like to get some after market mufflers that would give his bike some volume. Nothing to loud, but louder then staock. Does anyone make some for his bike. I own a 99 Royal Star Venture with BUB pipes, and it sounds wonderful. My buddy would like to also enhance his exhaust note. Scott (((>
  20. Just wondering what the most quite exhaust is that can be installed on an RSV? Have khrome works now and a bit to loud for me.
  21. A FEW WEEKS AGO MY 93 STARTED TO BACK FIRE WHEN I ROLL OFF THE GAS ONCE IN A WHILE,SO I WAS THINKING IT MUST HAVE A EXHAUST LEAK SOME WHERE, TODAY I WAS CHECKING IT OUT AND FOUND MY COLLECTOR IS LEAKING FROM THE SMALL HOLES IN THE BOTTOM. SO IF ANYONE OUT THERE HAS ONE I COULD BUY TO REBUILD OR A GOOD USED ONE IM IN NEED OF IT. THANKS!
  22. Last night my friend and modified my road king mufflers by driving a 1/2 in. rod all the way through the pipes. Now I have decent sounding exhaust, but I am concerned if I leaned out the motor too much. Opinions?
  23. I had to repair my exhaust collector and I am in the process of putting thing back together. I ordered 2 exhaust gasket http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/yamaha/Y-26H-14615-01-00.html and I see in the parts list http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/yamaha/Y-26H-14618-00-00.html Ring stopper. I did not have any ring stoppers when I took everything apart. What are they for. Should I order these are they necessary?
  24. I had a pm a couple of days ago of a new member that lived close bye but I work rotating 12hr shifts so it was hard to get back to him so today I had off and was installing new front springs thanks to Skydoc and he came over to shoot the breeze. The new springs work great and I fab'd up a bracket for the aftermarket rectifier that bolts to the frame and exhaust but keeps it away from the drive and heat from the exhaust, this way I was able to keep the OEM rectifier in place with all the plugs just in case my new one craped out all I would have to do is take the side cover off and switch plugs and off I go.When I get back from my vaca I will have it powder coated along with other stuff on the bike, Oh back to the new member he is a great guy and needs tips on how to go riding without the wife...lol
  25. After reading the threads this winter I found mention of an exhaust leak at the Y. I got my bike out of storage yesterday and sure enough I have the same leak on both sides. I am taking my bike to the dealer next week and will ask them to replace the exhaust under warranty. I see a number of members have had the exhaust replaced under warranty. I was wondering if anyone has not been able to get this fixed under warranty? If I can't get this replaced under warranty, I will plug the leaks with JB Weld. I see a few members have gone this route. Does anyone know how the JB Weld fix has held up? Also, what are side effects of having the leak?
