  1. I have been collecting a lot of junk, but not getting a lot of stuff done. My son andI have figured why the 85 Royale did not have any spark when I bought it and it appears to be the TCI. I got one on ebay for $7.50 plus about $7 in shipping as the only bidder and when we plugged it up, the bike started. I have no doubt the bike will need a lot of TLC, but it is complete and we will just have to go through it and see what it is going to take. This was the bike and spare engine I got for $550. It was a bit weird that as part of checking things out, we took the original TCI off the 85 and put it on my 83 and it not only would not start, but when I plugged the original TCI back up, it would not fire either. But, when we plugged up the ebay TCI, it would run. So, I bought another one and got it for $7.99 as I got it with a set of coils and a bunch of relays for a total of about $35, including shipping. This was also exactly the same number as the one on my bike. Hopefully, that will work and maybe I can see if my original 83 TCI is bad. The other part of the projects on my 83 is to replace the engine with the one I got with the 85 deal that is supposed to have only 30,000 miles on it. My plans are to split it and replace the transmission with the 2nd gen RSV transmission that I have, which I only paid $25 for. But, in case there is a problem with the change over, I bought an 86 transmission for $24.95 and forks for $4.99. With all that, plus a starter clutch assembly to have as a backup, I got it all, including shipping for about $60. I thought I did pretty good on that too. I will also put the solid motor mounts in that I got from Steve (SGN) that really look good. The other part of this project is to install the V-Max rear drive I got that I think will go real good with the 2nd gen trans. The one thing that is going to cost me is I took my Corbin seat to an upholster today and that is going to cost about $250 the be redone, ouch. I really like the seat and it works real good for me with the modifications I have already done earlier, so I hope it will be worth it. Soooooo, now my biggest thing is to get motivated on getting something done. I probably need to get the 83 running good before I try to replace the engine as I will be using my original carbs. And, as a backup, if there are any problems with the 85 engine or transmission, even though it is about 500 past the serial number fix, I will have my 83 engine and it already has an 86 transmission. 2. My engine sounds real loud while its sitting on the stand, is there a way to make the engine run smoother?
  3. Lawyer Noah Kushlefsky has filed suit in New York against Toyota Motor Company. Seems as though Mary Rivera purchased a new Lexus and parked it in her down stairs garage. According to the suit, the engine was so quiet that Mrs Rivera did not realize that the engine was still running. The following morning relatives found Mrs Rivera passed out in her upstairs bedroom and her boyfriend Ernst Codella (also a Lawyer) deceased in bed, victims of carbon monoxide posioning. The suit claims Toyota is liable because they failed to install an automatic engine shut off if the car is left unattended for some peroid of time. On the other hand; this may also prove you really can't fix stupid.

    Noise

I am looking to purchase a new Venture. I like everything about the bike. I just have a question as to engine (or transmission ) noise. I was told that because of the way that the gears are cut in a Venture, there is a lot of whine noise (loud high whine) when riding the Venture. Can anyone comment on that? Is there a lot of engine noise? Whine? Thanks:detective:
  5. Anyone know of a source for new piston rings for an 83 venture 1200. Doing 2nd gear teardown. Figured with 78000mi and a 90psi cylinder, I'd replace rings as long as the engine is out. Cycle Design had all parts but rings. I see on other sites rings are listed as discontinued.
  6. Hello all, I am a new member and looking for some help. I have a 2005 Royal Star Tour DLX. Love this machine just looking for more POWER. I have been told I can have the engine pumped up to the VMAX power. Can someone please advise me as to what has to be done to do this and a ball park as to what it would cost and a good place to have it done around the Toronto Ontario Canada area or anywhere near. Thanks ever so much in advance.
  7. Have this on another forum but the experts are here,,, I have noticed here in the past month or so that I have a very slight oil drip in the center of the engine. I think I have traced it to a location that is going to near impossible to check and tighten the small bolts on the left side of the engine up, and behind the covers. It doesn't seem to do it all of the time, just when it sits for a while. But then again it hasn't sit for long until now. I will try to get a photo of the area that I think it is coming from this week end and post it. I also noticed that the sight glass for the oil is full,,, I thought that I had filled it to just above the top mark ever so slightly,,,,,, Now the strange thing... I looked yesterday to just check the drip, and saw a drop or two of anti freeze hanging on the same line that there has been oil. What the heck!!! My shop varies greatly in temperature, and I figure that the line or a clamp is shrunk due to cold, and reheat ( to a degree ) I am puzzled on this a little.... Any Ideas.
  8. I just purchased a 4 hour DVD all about rebuilding the 1200/1300 engine. It is based on the VMAX engine but as you know it is the same basic motor. Should anyone want to borrow it I will make it available for shipping costs. Don, maybe you could make this a sticky...
  9. Has anyone put their lights on a switch so one can start the engine without the lights. Then once the engine is running, one can manually put the lights on. In this way one saves battery power in the event one needs to hit the starter more often than normal to get the engine running?
  10. THEY COULD NOT FIND THE ENGINE I PURCHASED ON EBAY 4 days ago!!! I emailed my arrival date along with my payment intentions. I called repeatedly to confirm. No answer, only busy signals. I arrived Dec. 28 waiting for the door to be unlocked. They spent 45 minutes looking for it before they told me that it wasn't where it was supposed to be. I did the requisite song and dance about deciding to do business with a company who professed their good reputation online, yet no one answering phones... blah, blah, blah, and "then I arrive here and you can't even find an engine you just posted on eBay?!?!" I was finally invited out back to start looking too...apparently in violation of strict orders from the boss who wasn't there...but after driving for 5 hours and spending the night in a hotel, they might have sensed that I was about to have a royal Canadian bird right then and there if I didn't get my engine. We found 2 other engines. One I recognized from online that looked like crap, which was why I went for the one that came up for sale more recently. The other engine we found was missing a side cover but looked a lot cleaner, however it might have 3 times the mileage than the one I saw online...ODO was 17,542...it looked that clean but I have to doubt it. Amber, the girl behind the desk, couldn't make a deal, but she expressed her frustration working a job without the required manpower, and covering for people who weren't at this location. She phoned the boss, the only concession was $25 off. WARNING: Pinwall Cycle is moving to a new location. There are signs all over the shop saying they are moving to the old Canton Elevator building. The move is planned to be completed by August 2011. The place is in total chaos now, half crew at new location, half at the old place. If this move is going to last for 8 months, and they don't have the ability to keep track of a whole engine in the mean time, I'm warning you all about potential order problems in the coming months.
  11. I changed my oil and noticed a lot of sludge on the filler cap. This is an 02 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 4.7 V-8. That was about 2200 miles ago and I added 7.5 oz. of SeaFoam to the oil when I put it in. I also installed a new PCV valve. The truck has 126.5K miles now and I have never had a problem with it. Question: Can I continue to use the SeaFoam with each oil change or should I change from dino oil to synthetic? And would either of this make any difference? There is a forum that really blasts this engine for too small journals and cylinders dropping out plus engine seisures with low mileage, but I have never had any problems other than the sludge starting to build.

  13. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, "So Doc, look at this engine. I open its' heart, take the valves out, repair any damage, and then put them back in, and when I finish, it works just like new. So how come I make $40 k a year and you get the really big bucks when you and I are doing basically the same work?" The cardiologist paused, smiled , leaned over, and said.........."Try doing it with the engine running."
  14. well i'm way ahead on my winter project. the drive train and engine is all mounted after much machining, fabricating, and welding. had to lengthen the frame 2" to fit the new engine and automatic transmission in. like putting 10 lbs. of crap in a 5lb bag. the body which was hammered from one end to the other, is almost ready for the paint shop, i had to fabricate and weld in some new panels. i have to disassemble it and send the body off for paint, and paint the frame. then i can start the final assembly. it should look almost original at first glance accept for the oversize aluminum wheels and front disc brake. another cushman sleeper will hit the road this winter. i'm hoping for a cruising speed around 65 or 70 mph.. got an idea for a small trailer to tow behind and taking a cross country trip with my buddy on his cushman eagle that i built for him. pics to come soon, i hope. bill:2133:
  15. The I-basket is the greatest thing since sliced bread, the wife and I went for a 2hr ride today and it was so nice nice to actually here the engine. should have done it long ago
  16. For many of you that are not of the southern persuasion, this means you are buying something you know very little about and not real sure what you are going to get. Anyway, yesterday I bought another 1st gen. It was listed on Craigslist as an 86 with needing some work for $600 and it was about 85 miles away. Thankfully for me, Skydoc did the last run for a bike that was not worth going after, so to say the least, I went into this with very little expectations. See Skydoc, you did a good thing for some of us and may not have realized it and no I am not going to contribute to your gas fund. Before I decided to take off, he did agree to come down to $550 so that helped a little. When I got there the first thing was that it was an 85 instead of an 86 and I let him know I was disappointed in that and the 85 may still have the 2nd gear transmission problem, which by the way, with his experience with 1st gens he was aware of. I did mention that the problem was apparently solved in the 1450 range on the serial number on 85 models . This one turned out to be 1588. The bike is a Royale and complete as best I can tell, but had an electrical problem that he said was an igniter or whatever. I suspect a TCI, but won't know for sure until I get into it. While discussing options, his buddy also mentioned there was an 83 engine in their parts warehouse that only had 30,000 miles on it. We took a look at it and it looked pretty good and with me planning on converting my 83 engine that has an 86 transmission over to the 2001 Venture transmission this winter, I was thinking I may be able to convert that one and replace the engine in my bike. So, I asked what he would have to have for the 85 bike and the 83 engine and he said I could have it all for $550 and I took it. Again, all this is a pig in a poke, so I won't know how well I did until I start going thru everything after I get it home. I did notice that the 85 had a real nice backrest on it. RandyA
  17. Have had a 83 VR for two years now and have been working on an overheating problem. The 83 VR has an 86 (1300) motor because the PO had a second gear problem and replaced the whole engine. Anyway, the bike has been running hot since I bought it (right up at the red/green line). When the weather is in the high 80's low 90's it boils over when stopped at a light or in traffic, etc.. (See my posts from earlier this year) I have changed everything trying to correct the problem. I was going to sell the bike for parts and have bought a 89 VR from a member on this forum and am in the process of fixing it up and getting it ready to ride next season. I took the 89VR to Earl to have some mechanical work done on it and spoke to him about the overheating on the 83 VR. He said that he thought the TCI was the original one from the 83 and that the timing curve was different from the 86 engine that was currently in the bike. He thinks that that is what is creating the overheating problem. I stumbled across the article about the foreign made TCI and it said in the thread that the 83 had a different timing mode than the later engines. So, I think my overheating problems may be because I have a 1200 TCI in the bike and not a 1300 TCI. I don't think the original PO changed the TCI but cannot confirm that with the previous PO. I do not want to teardown the bike to get the TCI out, instead I just want to try a 1300 TCI and put it on top of the airbox and see if that corrects the problem. I will be selling this bike in the spring if it solves the problem , otherwise I will part it out as I don't want to sell this bike with this problem. I now own a 89 VR, which is being worked on by Earl (Skydoc) and don't need two bikes. Does anyone have a TCI for an 86 1300 engine they would like to sell? Thanks Jim
  18. A while back there was someone who would diamond cut the engine side covers. Does anyone remember?
  19. I have a Vulcan 1600 Classic, which has a five speed, counter-balanced V-twin engine. At highway speeds, I find that there's a fair amount of high-frequency vibes that come through the floorboards and to a lesser extent, through the hand grips too. Is this also apparent on the Venture? And do you feel that the lack of a sixth gear is a big deal? Is the engine maybe a bit busy when up to highway speeds since it only has a five speed transmission, causing any kind of noticeable buzzing/vibrating?
  20. May need to replace my muffler cans for my 1987 Venture. The previous owner knocked out the baffles. A little louder than normal but not too bad, however, will this affect the engine performance??
  21. "just when you start to make both ends meet -- some bugger moves the ends!":bang head: I had decided that I needed to get a trike with reverse, and also not have Quickstep laying on the ground checking the pre-load on Voyager kit for years to come. He would then take the Venture back to two wheels and ride it. Need a trike with usual bike seats, as I climb on to back seat first, then swing bad leg over tank and slide forward. Also can't have engine sticking out at side--need the room for stiff leg. So, of the bikes that come with reverse: G/Wing -[NO] BMW-[NO] both have engine sticking out. Bingo !! found the answer -- H-D Ultra Classic Trike NOPE!! Do not comply with Australian standards - too heavy :crying: Dealers have tried to get the new trike into Oz but powers that be won't budge. Was going to buy it when we came over, ride it then ship home.... Oh well, back to the drawing board
  22. Hi Guys and Gals... I have a holes in the chamber thing and I cannot get it a patch to hold for anything. I have tried muffler patch and the clay stuff that turns into metal, even a screw and the clay/metal stuff and that still blew out. It is annoying but I just want to make sure it won't affect the engine in any negative way. I prefer a nice quick ride but I can put up with the pseudo Harley sound. I do not know what the chamber is called but it is connected to the pipes from the engine then to the mufflers. Help I am going nuts with this. Thanks, Mark '86 VR
  23. Just ran across this and thought it might be a deal for anyone looking for an engine. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260671594241&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT
  24. Friend has a '07 Suzuki Boulevard, shaft drive. He removed rear wheel to get nail hole fixed, put back together driveshaft won't turn. Told him to pull back apart and make sure he got drive shaft in yoke, done, says the engine running put in gear let out on clutch can hear noise in rear of engine like something turning but driveshaft nor yoke is turning. What does he need to do? Any suggestions?:confused24:Thanks in advance.
  25. For some reason at a redlight I looked down at the side of my engine. I noticed that the carb joints were pulsating with the engine. Fine right? There are huge cracks in the boots. Looked bad. Looks like 55 and 70 for left and right times 2 = 250 bucks. Ouch. Of course I don't want to be left on the side of the road either. I know how to find vehicle junkyards but haven't seen many bike yards. Anybody know where I can get some? I scanned ebay and didn't see any. Also might be a good time to upgrade my 97 RSTC to the 32mm Venture carbs. Anyone have a source on those either? I do plan to be a contributing member, may payup tomorrow. (no work tomorrow gonn abe home all day) I am in Gainesville, ga. Thanks very much.
