  1. With help from many members here and the great documentation on the site, I put on a new set of Dunlop E3's and regreased all the necessary spots although I did not take apart the drive shaft. The hub pins were badly rusted but I didnt see any other issues. So I take it out for a ride this morning to break in the tires and I have a new problem. A new noise coming from the rear end. Its a pulsating sound that changes with speed. If I pull the clutch at any speed the noise get far louder. I dont see any marks on the tires so I assume somethign is wrong with the drive train back there. Other then this issue, there are no problems with braking, engine, power handling. Any advice is appreciated. I'll be tearing it down again this morning.
  2. Got back home last night from the Black Hills....had a great time...just thought I'd share a pix of a place where we hadn't been before. It's a town (population....probably 3) called Rochford. You drive 17 miles in on blacktop, eat at the bar and drive 17 miles back out. The place was packed!
  3. Here's my pics Freebirds MD http://s105.photobucket.com/albums/m232/kebranton/FreebirdMD2010/ Washington DC http://s105.photobucket.com/albums/m232/kebranton/WashingtonDC2010/ Skyline Drive & Blueridge PKY http://s105.photobucket.com/albums/m232/kebranton/Blueridge%202010/
  4. Don finally let me drive the bike, on the way home, pulling the trailer. Woo Hoo!! I actually got it out of 3rd gear. Actually, I got it in 4th AND 5th gear and got it up to 66 mph. Wow! It felt great (after a few minutes of stomach churning and nerves going over the edge). Then there was Don riding behind me and telling me how uncomfortable the passenger seat was. I also didn't realize how much heat comes off the engine on my legs. Will definitely wear long pants and shoes next time I drive. I drove it the last 30 miles to our house and it was quite an experience. I can't wait to drive it to work now...but Don says I have to have more experience before he will let me take it on the highway, which is how I go to work. Will post update when that happens. Anyway..I am in awe of all you female drivers out there. This is great! I was thinking I would just drive it "in case" something happened...but maybe I will look at some bikes. Hmmmmm....
  5. Hello all, A big thanks to everybody who threw in their opinions/knowledge for me... I am now the proud owner of my first touring machine, have had many bikes over the years but nothing like this... it just begs to go get ice cream in freakin Florida! LOL '86 Royale 1300, it's got a few issues but I am ready to address them directly starting with a full mechanical work over (fluids etc.) Many extra thanks to the poster that said "wave $1500 under his nose" (he was asking $2200)... I had to sit on that number for a day or two but he finally caved mostly cause no one in this city wants to drive all the way to Parker for an old bike. Well.... except me I will be joining officially at the end of my trial, and romping through the tech forum as fast as possible... those are my kind of reads! Thanks again everybody, will be asking questions, posting progress for those who give a darn, and will figure out how to get a pic up on here soon. Great site! Kelly
  6. B2MOM got her motorcycle endorsement and passed her road test today so she is ready to go. I can hear it now....ALL THE WAY TO OBERLIN...Can I drive? Can I drive? Is it time for me to drive? Pull over, I want to drive now. It's my turn to drive...can I? Can I??? It's gonna be a longgggg trip! We are meeting ScaryLarry, Wanderer and Double D in Beaver Dam, KY at 10:30 am in the morning. Anyone else coming? Everyone have a safe trip! Don
  7. Hello all, I have decided after some looking around... ok A LOT of looking around that I like this venture bike quite a bit. I am a technician by trade and understand most issues when encountered but I also know that every machine has it's own little quirks that can only be understood by owning and riding. I need to know what (if any) major issues to look for on the 1986 Royale 1300cc (2nd generation?)... at least that is how it's advertised... and am about to drive a long way to check it out! I'm ready to buy, and to own my first full blown touring bike... a bit excited, yet weary at the same time. Any help here? Thanks, Kelly kjp40.05@gmail.com
  8. Well, I was doing some regular maintenance on QuickSilver the other day, just getting ready for the Ohio Carnival next week, and while I had the rear wheel off to change the tire I figured it was about time to finally check the drive shaft for lube. I know some folks here think this needs to be done every two weeks or so , but not me! I haven't pulled the drive shaft even once in 80,000 miles, and from what I saw, there really wasn't much need to do it now. There was not a ton of grease in there, but enough. It was clear that Yamaha used a moly grease when they put it together, and there were no visible signs of abnormal wear. So I just added a touch more 5% moly and put it all back together for another 80,000 miles. It really wasn't too hard to get the drive shaft back in the U-joint with the help of another member who just happened to be around while I was working (THANX Formerfuzz!). The trick was to simply put the transmission in gear and have someone else turn the final drive gears while I held the drive unit and tried to generally center the shaft on the U-joint. Here's a tip for when you get ready to do this - first, pull the drive hub/fingers from the rear wheel (which you should be doing to lube the drive fingers anyway), and use that hub for your helper to turn the gears/drive shaft while you hold the drive unit and try to insert the drive shaft into the u-joint. After you get the drive housing back in place, you can finish greasing the drive fingers and putting the hub back in the wheel. Since I hadn't done this before and I had already greased up the drive hub, I just wrapped a rag around a 2x4 and jammed it into the drive splines to turn the gears. Goose
  9. I'm looking for an older Royal Star to buy, say 96-99, and I found a 96 on the internet but it's a fair drive away. I phoned the dealer who's selling it and they say there's 7000 miles on the bike. I have a hard time believing there's that few miles on a 14 year old bruiser cruiser. Does the odometer on the early royal stars roll over at a hundred thousand miles or a million miles?? (00,000 or 000,000) Dealers have been known to tell "half truths" in their favour and if there is only 7000 miles, I'd like to drive the three hours and grab it while it's there. Thanks, D.W.
  10. I am in need of a driveshaft and rear differential for my 85, anybody able to help out?
  11. Eileen and I just checked into our hotel in the Boston area. I have my one year checkup tomorrow to see how the cancer is doing. I'm not too worried about it, I am confident that things are going well. It was a long drive and we are tired but it was an OK trip. Weather is nice and it was a fairly relaxing drive. This was our first long trip in the 2011 Kia Sorento. Driving about 70 MPH most of the time and occasionally running close to 80 before catching myself and slowing down, it got about 27 MPG. I think that pretty decent for a AWD mid sized SUV. I'm very pleased with that. The 2004 Sorento that we traded in only got about 18 MPG under the same driving conditions.
  12. I've got to say.....some weeks are meant to be forgotten. This was one of them. Like they say.....When it rains..... it pours. Lets see...where to begin? I guess the trivial stuff should be first. Rain.....lots of rain. I got rid of my Wally World burners this spring and installed a nice pair of 4 1/2 chrome driving lights with visors and amber lights on my '84. Looked really sharp and did a nice job. I had Squidlys light brackets and he even modified the brackets that the brackets mount onto to beef them up to deal with the bigger light. The problem was after about 500 miles the vibration just beat the elements out of them. Too big of a light with not enough support. Installed new clear bulbs and lost both of them in less than 200 miles. Back to the Wally World burners until I figure out another way to mount them. My full time job informed me that my hours would be restricted to 40 hours a week. Weird. I've been with this company for five years and they keep adding extra duties that have been keeping me around 48 hours a week for the last four years. So I asked the the question, "Who's going to do the rest my job?" Go figure......they did my performance review and I didn't score so well on "Attitude". SURPRISE! LOL! My part time job notified me that they are cutting my hours by 75%. Lets see.....that should almost pay for the gas it takes to drive to and from work. Oh! Hey! I'm on the bike! I can still make a few bucks! About $20.00 a week! Somebody just tell me not to bother coming in anymore. Please? More rain...... River Roads are holding up well. My car has been setting a lot as I've been on the bike every chance I get since I got it back together. I guess it was feeling neglected as the day I really wanted to drive it because of the "heavy rain" it decided not to start. Took a day to figure that out and a rather pricey module to fix it. Seemed the sensor was cracked and did not like the moist conditions. I used to have a Ford wagon that could predict rain 3 days in advance. Got rid of that one. Hummm..... So a week ago I sit down to my trusty 'puter to take care of some bills and do my thing in cyberspace and I get the message, "HARD DRIVE IS UNSTABLE, BACKUP NOW". Wow! Ok. I'm on that........wait.....how much time do I have? Not so much I guess. Second backup disk into the process it just dies. Pull the hard drive and it's gone meltdown. I suppose some of you know how much time goes into replacing a hard drive and reinstalling the system and doing the restore and the backup and well....ya know. But I'm here today. Whew! So today was my special day. Had the afternoon off because on the hours being cut back. Ok that's cool. Nice day out.....mid 60's......blue sky......wind was mild... for a change. So what to do? RIDE!!!! I'm getting the bike out and gearing up to head out and my daughter rolls in. She actually asked if she could go with me. What the hey? She's 18.... she never wants to hang with dad anymore. Something fishy here.....but I'm not going to pass on spending some time with her. Grab your gear kid.....let's roll! And we are off........ Hit the back highways and enjoying the day. Ran across a custom car show......and she actually knew what some of the cars were! That might explain the copy of Hot Rod I found in her room. Found a BBQ place and fed our faces. I'm looking for ice cream next. But we were rolling down the highway about 65 mph and I catch a bit of movement at the bottom of my vision as something flipped up in front of the tank cover and slid down into my lap. No biggie....a piece of a leaf......maybe some sort of road debris.....not worried. YET! A few miles down the the road I catch another movement. On my leg, actually crawling up my leg....well....between my legs. Took me a moment to identify it but when I did I had to muster some control. Now I don't know how many of you guys have ever had a Wolf spider settle in on your "Berries and Twig" at 65 mph but it is a bit unsettling to say the least. It's a nice one to, about 2 inches across on the leg span. And it's holding it front legs up! I guess it was checking for wind speed. Or it's pissed off. I bet on pissed off. So I know that if I even mutter the word "Spider" my daughter will be getting off the bike at any speed. She would! Hates spiders! Me.......I'm trying to figure out how to get off the bike without kicking my daughter in the head. I'm not all that fond of them either and not under those conditions. So mustering my self control I rode it out with a wolf spider waving at traffic in my lap until I got to a get off and pulled into a town and stopped at the traffic light. With a firm but demanding flick of a finger I sent the little fellow off to another location. Now....I didn't mean for it to happen the way it did but the lil fellow found a new ride. The window on the car next to me was open and he just went right on in. Not planned. Just happened. As the light changed and I pulled away I could hear the screaming. I saw my daughters head spin around to look and she tapped me on the helmet and asked me if I heard them screaming. "Yep, Pumpkin....I did.....maybe they found a spider." I didn't tell her what happened and don't plan on it either. I'd never get her back on the bike again....ever! So that was my week. But I'm feeling much better now. Supposed to be in the 70's tomorrow and blue skys again. More therapy......after I check the bike REALLY good for hitch hikers. Ya'll ride safe and be kind to animals. Never leave one stranded away from home. Make sure they have a ride. Mike
  13. My 08 is at the dealers for the 4000 mile check-up and a leaking seal on the shaft drive. The question is I have a little over 5000 miles on the stock rear tire, the dealer said I could get another 2000 +/- out of it but seeing they have to take the tire off do I want it replaced right now? it would save $$$ down the road. When they take the rear wheel off is there anything else I should have them do? grease the drive splines & hub pins? check anything? Should I upgrade to the E3 from the stock 404? thanks for any imput.
  14. So I am tackling the 2nd gear issue on the old 1st gen and my question to ya'll is this, in order to get the split washers off of the shaft do I have to take the end NUT off first :think:or do I compress the spring with the NUT in place? It looks like a powerful spring so I dont want to test the old SAFETY GLASSES today...lol Thanks in advance:bowdown: Michael
  15. OK, so we all know that if Moma ain't happy, no one is. With that in mind' The better half and I are going to be taking a trip to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas in May. (22-29) The plan is for me to drive out from Ohio, meet her at the airport, (She is giving me some free time), then spend a week camping the Canyon, drive back to Vegas, put her on a plane and then for me to beat-feet back to Ohio. Problem, The need for "STUFF", exceeds my ability to carry on the bike. I know I could find a trailer here in OHio and lug it out there, but what I'd really like to do is drive free from the thing out, rent one while I'm there and then drive free back. Any Idea's about where to find one to rent would be appricated.
  16. I've cleaned the outside of the location where the drive shaft housing and the final drive are bolted together several times. It gets a good dirty/greasy film on the outside. No drips and no apparent seapage from there at all so am wondering where that might be coming from? Any suggestions?
  17. Lost my rear brakes on the way to work this AM. Looks like fluid spray on the rear tire--no rear brake pedal. Front brakes still working. Safe to drive carefully to the shop (10 miles)? Thank you ED
  18. Just wondered if anyone has found their final drive getting hot? Put my hand on the diff housing, (where the oil is), after 100 ks today & could only just keep it on there. Didn't hold thermometer to it but it was hot enough to concern me. Never felt it before so don't know if this is normal? Wheel rim is warm. Oil level is good. Brake disc is cool. Thanks guys Tony.
  19. I've been waiting and hoping i could retrieve some information of my crashed hard drive, it would have been nice anyway since the back up got chewed up as well... But, alas, no such luck so i'm getting ready to bite the bullet and start entering two months worth of stuff into my old 'puter. First though I wanted to upgrade my virus protection which meant removing Norton and installing something better. Great idea!! One problem, it calls for a re-start, 'xcept it didn't:doh:. So of to the puter guru, I get there and discover my 2 wheel wheelbarrow is gone from the truck, i suppose it fell off on the way over there:confused07::confused07:, but if'n it did, I sure didn't notice and I didn't see it on the side of the road going home. Then I learn the second hard drive has gone to h3ll:bang head::bang head: The puter guy said he thinks that he will be able to retrieve info from this one though:o Somebody shoot me!!
  20. I pulled the drive shaft out of my shaft unit. Lots of moly grease on it and everything looked great. The seal I bought is the correct part number ( 93108-43013-00), but when I slide it onto the drive shaft it slides over the area that the snap ring and washer go but it 'appears' that it's inner diameter is too small to go over the flat spot that the old seal was on. Does it stretch that much?? It seemed like the old seal was glued to the driveshaft. What glue are we supposed to use?? Frank D.
  21. I'm looking for help/info with regard to external hard drive back ups. I want to get something & a program that I can download a back up from a different location. Confusing ? yep - Here's what I want to do; I will have a computer in a building apart from my home and across town. There will be people cataloging information/pictures on that computer. At the end of the day I want to back up that information on an external hard drive which will be located at my home. The reason for this particular action is many but foremost is in case of fire/theft or any other unforeseen act. Thanks for any help. Dick
  22. http://www.vpike.com/ showed my drive way real clear lowell
  23. I met Buddy and my new RSV today, and it was love at first sight(the RSV, not Buddy...lol). Buddy is a great guy. I'll be bringing home my new scoot Saturday. Sure was a long drive here though. http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/Oklahoma009.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/Oklahoma006.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/Oklahoma003.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/0217101617.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/0217101618.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/0217101618a.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/NewBike.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/Oklahoma008.jpg :dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool:
  24. I went last summer without having a ride parked in my garage (1st time in about 20 yrs) I worked hard a focused on getting another RSV. Had a few set back, wife laid off, my part time jobs hours cut, daughter needed a new car, getting her ready for college and so on... we all know how that goes, save a dollar and spent two. Anyhow things are looking up. I'll still go another summer with out a bike, but should be able to save a nice bit of change. Now lately I've been having thoughts about going back to an HD Ultra and I"m not really sure why. I know the RSV is more comfy and more roomy then the ultra, I know the RSV is water cooled and can go three time the miles over HD'S air cooled motor. i know the RSV is shaft drive vs HD's belt drive. I know a new RSV has a five year warranty over HD's one year, and I know I can pick up a two or three year old venture with low miles for around $10,000 to $12,000. What I don't know is why I'm having these bad thoughs of going back to HD!!! Maybe it's because the wife thinks HD is the way to go.?Mabey it's because Yamaha refuses to update? Or maybe it HD's six speed trans, or thier cd player? I just know I need help before the powers of the darkside take over! '
  25. My friend wrote me this morning and said he just bought a new Buick and that he must be getting old. I have a Buick Park Avenue! I told him the following,,,,,Life "begins" with a Buick! Your now authorized to drive in the left lane at 50mph with your right turn signal on, attempt to parallel park by nosing in. Once in, you may now do a 5 minute "bumper bump" to assure equal distance front and rear. You may also drive two lane state Hwy's at 45mph oblivious to the 26 cars in your rearview mirror. You may now shop at Pamida ,, park any way you like, even sideways! You may leave your lights on, (auto shut off) while in innocent awe your horn blasts repeatedly, you fumble with your key fob then drive off with your trunk open! You may practice double parking at the drug store and café while ignoring even semi air horn blasts!.... All this in preparation for a Caddy! Oh yes,,,,,,Caddy's come with optional handicap stickers that can be displayed in non-handicap parking zones!,,,, Imagine the FREEDOM! As an added plus, the owners manual comes in LARGE PRINT! Renne,,,
