  1. Well, I am finishing up my fourth carb and found that I need the two gaskets, which seem to be overly priced ($20 each) every where I look. Is there a cheaper place to find them? Especially the thick one under the idle enrichment valve. Also, it seems that the PO was kind enough to misplace the bowl drain screw for one of the carbs. Is it possible to find one of those somewhere as well? All the parts fiche places don't seem to show it as separate from the carb body. It might be that my eyes are failing me though....
  2. I have developed a leak coming out of the drain cock. It is a slow leak but I'd like to fix the problem. I checked the position it is set and it is aligned with the mark at about 2 oclock. I noticed that there is a O ring behind the the hex shaped front and I think the O ring may need replacement. My question is: Does this hex shaped item screw out thus exposing the O ring? Thanks, Ronnie
  3. Good evening all, getting ready to do my first oil change and am pondering if I should go with a Magnetic Oil Drain Plug. Suggestions?
  4. Anyone have any experience with installing this thing? What would be a good "switchable" point to hook up the power. I should turn on and off with a turn of the key so as not to drain the battery if its left on.
  5. Just wondering what should be drained when changing oil, (please, no one say oil). What I mean is where should the oil be drained? First would be the big drain plug, next the oil filter. Doe's any one also drain the bottom bolt, (alen head) on the left hand side of the bike as you are setting on it. It is the cover farthest back , down by the foot peg. To get straight in on it you have to fold the foot peg back. It is made to allow for draining. It has a copper washer on it. I drain it each time I change oil.
  6. Well my 1986 venture has been in the garage on her centre stand most of the winter, start her up once every 2 weeks(approx.) let her warm up to turn on the electric cooling fans sometimes.. However today I was cleaning the garage so she had to move out, and when I put her in first gear and pulled away a small puddle of coolant spilled out from the lower fairing, from the forward motion...Now I checked the overflow tube for the rad and it doesn't seem to drain in that area, hope I am wrong, anyone else have this happen during winter storage...? Garage only hit -10 celcius maybe for 3-5 days, normally at 0 degrees or above...
  7. As some of you already know, and if you don't, you will now know, I did second gear on my 85. Well, in order to do that job I found out that you need to pull the whole motor out of the bike and then turn it upside down. I figured that it would be a smart thing to first drain out the oil, so out comes the drain plug and off comes the filter. Now the drain plug is an easy one to loose so I was really smart and put it back ASAP. The filter housing on the other hand is a messy business so after taking it off, I neatly put it upside down in the garbage can to drain out, to be retrieved and cleaned at a later date. Well that date was today, and nowhere can I find that housing or the filter itself. I have a new filter but it's somewhat useless without the cover, so now where did the old one end up??????? The best guess I've got at this point, is that seeing as I like things to be as clean as possible and that the garbage was gettiing full, I neatly put a garbage bag over the can, turned it upside down, tied it up and sent it off to never never land where they are building a big heap of other leftovers. Yep my filter cover is gone, gone, gone. Now I need another, but where to find such a thing, I thinking maybe there be someone around who would quietly send me one so that the whole world won't find out how smart I can sometimes be.
  8. So the oil get pumped up to the cams and then drips off onto the heads, but where does it go from there???????? I am quite used to looking at automotive heads and there are drain holes to get the oil back into the pan, but I can't seem to find any on a first gen. The reason I'm asking this, is that when I was doing the tappet adjustment, one side of the head was full of oil, so how come, it just can't keep pumping it up there with no place to drain it away. An inquiring mind needs an answer.
  9. I decided to drain the antifreeze yesterday. Everything went well, drained the radiator, cylinders, etc. but when I got to the water pump I couldn't believe how hard it is to get to the drain plug out. Do I need a special wrench? Do I need to take the exhaust pipe off? If it is the exhaust pipe that has to come off then the bottom screw on the pipe is just as hard to get to. Am I missing something? What if I don't drain the water pump? Harry
  10. Does anyone know the thread size on the oil drain plug? I was going to replace mine with a magnetic one if I could come up with the size. I came across this site.....prices are reasonable. They also list oversize plugs. http://www.cgenterprises.com/magneticdrainplugs/ Thanks Keith
  11. Hi, Is there a drain plug for the coolant somewhere on these engines? Or does one have to improvise like on a VW where they tell you to pull a rad hose to act as the drain? Also, I think I need a new O ring for the coolant by pass valve as I have a leak there now. Any suggestions for a non yama solution? Thanks, Brian H.
  12. I just got my 2007 Venture in August of this year. Sold my 2003 V Star. I will be storing the Venture in the next month or so once the snow starts flyin here in Ontario. Normally I drain the carbs when I am storing after filling the Fuel tank with gas and stabilizer. I can't figure out how to drain the carbs on the Venture. Are there drain screws or some easy way of draining. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks JR
  13. Never, NEVER, work on your scoot when you are mad at the freaking world. I have a ride this weekend and was going to change the oil. Spent over a decade in the USN as a dang knuckle dragger so you'd think I would always know righty-tighty lefty-loosey. Over torqued the drain plug and she's stripped. Now what? Options??
  14. Just got some Seafoam finally to dump in my '89 VR tank. Reading the label says it helps in the oil too. Just wanted to check & see if it really does & if I should drain the oil after having it in awhile. Sounds like this stuff is the clear deal!
