  1. My question is.......Can I take the plastic off my 83 VR and take it all to a regular auto body shop and get it painted? Is there any difference in having them paint it or is there some special motorcycle paint out there that is supposed to be used?
  2. Well folks, as I posted a while back, my '99 RSV has just not been running right. Not only had fuel mileage really gone down last year but this year it also just didn't seem to have the get up and go that it once did. I have really been fighting with this trying to figure out the problem. Last weekend I decided to sync the carbs again and noticed that when I pulled the vacuum caps off to connect the Carbtune, the engine would also die when I pulled the caps off cylinder 1,2 and 4. One at a time of course. When I pulled the cap off number 3, it made no difference. So I decided that cylinder 3 was probably not firing correctly or at all. I changed the plug and it made no difference. I then removed my Dyna3000 and installed the old TCI again. That made no difference either so I re-installed the Dyna. I had bought a spare set of coils off Ebay last fall so went ahead and changed out the number 3 coil. That made a huge difference. It appeared to be firing after that. I could pull the vacuum caps off any cylinder and it would no longer try to die. So even though the coil ohms out OK according to the manual (well actually I found a mistake in the manual on testing the coils but I'll do another writeup on that), it appears to have a problem under load. So I took it for a ride and found that it runs better and idles better but guess what? Something was still not right. I could feel that it still didn't have the power that it once did and confirmed it by opening her up on a back road and 90 MPH was the absolute top speed. No good at all. I also noted a surging when I tried accelerating hard. Not really a miss or cutting out just surge then flat then surge again. I took it back home and put a new set of plugs in it but still no good. When I got home last night, I decided to use the clear tube method to check the float levels with the carbs on the bike. I found that I could not do that due to the fact that the last dummy who had the carbs off had put the float bowl covers on the wrong carbs, front to back, so that I could not get to the drain screws. (that dummy would be me last fall). So I ended up pulling the carbs again. Checked the float levels and found one to be a little high but not all that bad. I set them correctly, put the covers on the proper carbs this time and re-installed the carbs on the bike. The hardest part about this job for me is getting the rubber boots from the air box properly seated and tightened on the top of the carbs. I actually wonder now if I did not have one of them seated good and it was sucking air there. I made sure that I had them seated good this time. So, I fired her up and took a little ride. I knew immediately that my bike was back. Acceleration was strong again the way I knew it should be. I found an open stretch of road and hammered it. I took her to 110 MPH in 4th gear and she kept climbing when I hit 5th. Man it felt good to have her running right again. I backed off around 112 as I was out of good road. Note that I have my speedometer corrected with a Speedohealer so my speeds are accurate. So, all is good again. I'm not 100% sure what exactly corrected the problem. I feel that the coil was bad. I also know that one float was a little high. I suspect that I was sucking air at the top of at least one of the carbs. All I know is that it FINALLY runs like it should again. It will be interesting to see what my gas mileage does now. I'm anxious to fill it up and find out. Will report back. I have to believe that it will be back to normal now. I was also having a problem with some fume smells that were really bothering Eileen. I'm hopeful that will be resolved also.
  3. I'm considering purchasing a trailer and I'm new to motorcycle trailering. What's the difference between 8" wheels and 12" wheels as far as handling, wear and other considerations?-Jack

    50 mpg (US)

I don't understand this at all, but in several trips on my 87 VR I have gotten 50+ mpg several times, and just not one tank but several successive ones. Generally I run at 40 mpg. Couple of theories? 1. Maybe fuel without ethanol makes a difference. 2. Seems to do better when the weather is HOT. 3. Clearly riding at 45 - 50 mpg, nice and sedately makes a difference, but that much? 4. Head/tail wind? I know this will drive Greg in London nuts, but it is the facts.
  5. I have barons risers on my bike, but feel I need a little more. Will Fanders bars make a bigger difference?
  6. Hi, I have a Roadstar and am thinking of trading for a "venture", anyone know what kind of difference I'll find with Horsepower and torque? thanks, eric
  7. I have had the carbtune for a few months, but was hesitant to do this on my own, without some help. The help was in a post by Freebird. I followed it to the "T" and hopefully everything is ok. I won't be able to Ride until Sunday. 1 and 2 were a little off, so I got them pretty close. 3 and 4 were just about perfect, but the difference between the 1,2 and 3,4 was quite a bit off. I got them pretty close. It had never been done before, I could tell because the hoses were difficult to take off the carbs.
  8. After taking our first long ride this past weekend, and both of our hind quarters aching a bit, is there enough of a comfort difference between the regular seats and the pillow top seats? This is to passengers too. And while I'm on it, how much of a difference is there between the stock seats and an aftermarket, corbin, mustang, etc. in terms of long term comfort?
  9. Hi all, just sold Suzuki Volusia over weekend and ready to purchase new Venture, sat on one @ Christmas with wife on back and felt good and stable with feet on ground no problem,as i read post on here i see alot of people dropping the venture, that concerns me in that the weight difference from volusia to venture is about 270lbs more. any thoughts or imput appreciated since i want to make a purchase on one in next two weeks and prefer not to drop.. Thanks Brian D.
  10. Thanks for the heads-up on swapping out the 150 front tire with the Avon Venom 130.. I can't get over the difference in handling!
  11. Quick question..... Is there a difference between the front and rear brake pads on a 1st Gen? I have one set of pads and the 2 front look fine but the rear looks like it's getting a little close. I was going to change them this week but I don't want to do something stupid. (like I usually do.) I don't know which these are if there is a difference.
  12. how do i know the difference between an '87 venture and a venture royale?
  13. Lowered the front end this weekend... Went for a ride today:big-grin-emoticon:it was incredible! The wife is tiny as it is but now she is barely noticeable, good thing we talk or I would have to check that she is still there. And the bike itself has lost a good hundred pounds...Stops and slow turns are a pleasure. I understand the geometry change, shorter wheelbase, sharper rake, lower cg ..... all that's fine but I realy did not expect such a noticeable difference. Why ithe world doesn't Yamaha assemble them this way in the first place:confused24:. I bet they would sell a lot more of them. Those of you who have been considering - what are you waiting for???? Those who haven't...you should.
  14. I got a new set of Michelin Commanders for the 93 awhile back, and the stealer wanted over $200 to install-em even though I purchased the tires from them. (what a rip) Did a little nosing around and found a very experienced hobbiest that works on scoots to support his Big-Dog/Buell habbit. Got his name from a good friend with a Harley addiction. "Change my tires?" "Sure" says he. "While yer at it, how about adjusting steering head bearings, synching the carbs and servicing the rear drive?" "No problem" says he. About the same amount that the Stealer wanted to mount the tires. He actually pulled and inspected the head bearings packed and adjusted them along with the other mentioned service. Took it to him Saturday morning and he called me Sunday early afternoon saying it was done. WOW!! All I can say is I would'nt have believed there be this much difference. No low speed wobble. Tracks like she is on a rail, and almost leans herself into the curves. Has torque right out of the shoot, and idles like a new Lincoln. Can't wait to get her out and let her stretch her legs. Any locals need a refferal, PM me and I'll hook you up. DJ :thumbsup2:
  15. Does anyone know if there is any difference in seats between a 1999 RSV and a 2006. I am looking for a seat and just found out that I can buy a new 1999 seat, shipped to my door, for about $10.00 more than what some are being sold for used. Wasn't sure if there was a difference or not. Even from Yamaha they are different prices.

    avon tires

I will be putting Avon tires on next week. However, the guy at the shop that I spoke to about ordering and mounting them seemed concerned about the difference in size of the mt90 verses the original front as far as how they would fit the rim.He seemed to think because of the difference there would be too much pressure where it sealed on the rim.Has anyone had any problems with the mt90?
  17. Did a wax comparison on 3 scoots today using Mothers ,liquid glass and Turtle Wax. All we can say, is that, we couldnt see any difference by using the cheap Turtle wax
  18. Can you folks tell me the difference between the Zumo 450 and the Zumo 550? Besides the $500.00 difference? Also , I just want a great GPS with all the maps easy to use and TALKS! I have been using an old Street-Pilot for the past couple years now. but It is such a hassle to always have to Map stuff via computer. Thanks for any input! I was looking at this, http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Gamin-Zumo-450-Motorcycle-GPS-Navigator/2261924/product.html Jeff
  19. Ok, so put a new Dunlop D404 on the rear (16,900+ miles on the first one). While at it, I had the Yamaha dealer install the Diamond R level links. Once I got it home, added 3.9 Lbs of air to the front forks, and 32.4 lbs to the rear. Amazing difference in handling at all speeds, last year at 10,800 miles I had already put on the 130 front tire. This bike rocks now. Great handling at all speeds. Notices a huge difference in parking lots and is not following grooves in the road at all. No squirreliness (is that a word?) at all! However it is steep angle on the kickstand and a monstrous lift off when the bike is parked. Not that I am willing to change it back - no sirree! But must admit is a bit of a heft up off the stand? Any one ever done a kick stand mod? Added a pad to to bottom of the kickstand. I mean the cheapo is to carry a hockey puck on a string, but was thinking of something more (dare I say) elegant? Thoughts? Stu
  20. Guys: Want to get a shop/repair manual for an 05 RSV. Who has one, what is the ISBN? Found up to 04 RSV, don't know if there is any difference, really need to find an 05 manual. Sponge Bob It's a dry heat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  21. I was driving down to Deal's Gap and was surprised to see my speedometer indicating 120 Kph yet my GPS was saying 111kph. That is quite a large difference. Is anyone else experiencing a similar difference ? HAs anyone approached theie dealer about it and if yes what what the response ? Thanks
  22. Both of these subjects have been under a lot of discussion lately, and my bike needed both. Saturday was the big day, and here is my story. I'll start with the clutch. What happens to these things that makes them slip without wearing? All discs measured exactly the same as the brand-new discs - no measurable wear whatsoever. Spring measured within spec. Yet I had mild slippage sometimes under full throttle (not very bad, but annoying). I put the new discs in anyway. Didn't touch the half-disc in the "damper" mechanism as the manual says not to unless there is "severe chatter". I didn't sand the plates or replace the spring. Now after about 40 miles of riding and quite a bit of full throttle. I have experienced no slip - hooray. I've experienced this before. I've had (3) 87 Yahamas. I've had a Virago for a long time, and WAY back I had exactly the same problem with the clutch. I recall measuring the old discs to be well withing spec, just like this time, replaced them anyway, and I've never had that clutch slip again in 80,000 more miles. The mileage on it at the time was probably in the 50k's, same as the Venture now. I also had a Radian for awhile with less than 20k miles on it, and it's clutch slipped on occasion. I never worked on it and then sold it. What's up with that??? While I had the cover off I removed the nasty old remains of clear coat and polished - looks way cool but now the other case covers look very bad comparision - they feel embarassed, too. Worst part of the job was removing the old, rock-hard gasket from the cover. Replacing the slides went about as expected. I didn't want to remove the carbs so I haven't looked at the coasting diaphragms, just the slides. I had pulled #3 and it was quite cracked, so I ordered (4) of them. I found that #2 had been replaced sometime, don't know when but it was at least 2 years ago, probably longer. The diaphragm was good on it. At $55 a shot I wish I had known that before ordering, but the rubber was a little harder on it than on the new ones so I just put in the whole matched set and will keep the "new-old" one around for a spare. This profoundly affected the tuning of the bike. The carbs, which I just synced a couple k-miles ago, were way out, and the pilot screws which I had also adjusted needed to be leaned out. This gives me hope that this will answer my poor MPG question. Everybody said bad diaphragms kills the top end power, so I was looking forward to knocking my socks off on the first ride, although it ran pretty good before. Well, my socks are still on, but I think top-end is up. It sure gets up and goes. For one thing, it seemed to be running out of steam at 100 before, and this morning I saw 110 mph with a little still left (ran out of room). OTOH, it may have been clutch slippage or aprehension of a weave that kept me below 100 before, so I'm not totally sure if my perception is accurate. It tachs out to 8k rpm with no problem. I'll let you know about the MPG, although all this WOT ain't gonna be too good on that! Finally, I had gotten some weird compression readings before which made me wonder if something inside the engine was about smoked. I preferred to deny it rather than think much about it. On Saturday I ran compression again with the engine HOT and new schrader valves in my gage hoses (I tried two gages). I got 190 to 200 psi in all cylinders - wow! I concluded the following: 1) A hot engine can make a difference in reading consistency. It also makes a difference in burned fingers. 2) There is a schrader valve in the end of the gage hose that need replacing on occasion. It is special, so don't install a regular tire valve core (it looks the same) - get it from a tool store. It has a profound effect on readings! 3) Different gages sometimes read differently, so use the same gage for your whole test. 4) Even the different hoses made 10psi difference. Both had new schrader valves. All I can figure is that the valves were slightly different, but I didn't take the time to swap the new valve cores and retest. 5) They say to open the throttle all the way, but on a CV carb that leaves the slide blocking most of the intake path. I removed the air filter and used a dowel to hold the slide open for the test (as well as opening throttle). This seemed to make about a 5psi difference, and allowed the compression to build a little faster. I wouldn't say it's a critical part of the test, but it did affect the test. Jeremy
  23. Just got my bike out of the shop - had progressive springs put in. Holy Cow! What a difference. Why didn't I do this earlier?
  24. As part of trying to get rid of the off idle skip on my 83, I removed the hoses and plugged the ports on the YICS system. The bike runs so much smoother and I can not tell any significant difference in power, so what did the YICS system actually do? I noticed on the 86 engine that the ports are not even machined for a tube for the hose. RandyA
