  1. I am planing on changing the rear shock soon on my 86VR. The Progressive 420 is a little expensive, but if it makes as much difference as when I changed the fronts forks to Progressive it will be worth it. My question is do you still have the use of the class system on the bike and how much difference can I expect to see?
  2. Overly concerned at my fuel usage on the highway recently, I installed a short and wide Road Chrome windscreen to replace the Clearview Tall & wide and did comparative testing to see if it really did make a difference or not to go short or tall as far as fuel mileage goes. And here are my results, observed but unscientific.. (speeds noted are actual, not what the speedo reads, 10% difference) The biggest difference observed is at speed and depending on headwinds. It would appear to me that the biggest significant difference is when traveling at 110 km/h (actual speed) and above. At lower speeds, back rural roads and so on, I couldn't see much difference.. But once on the highway, as long as the speeds were in the 100 km/h area, with little headwinds, it would be the same.. the shorter windscreen seems to get a wee bit better mileage.. However, traveling at our 110 km/h posted speed limits on the highway is where the big difference comes in. And if traveling at a slightly higher speed then it's a huge difference. When you add on a 20 to 30 km/h head wind component to this equation, I found that the shorter windscreen made a huge difference.. And it's that 110 km/h speed 'zone' that makes the difference.. Mind you, the tall wide windscreen makes for a more comfortable ride, sitting behind that plexi barn door, but the wind it deflects is also wind that drags down the bike as well. I'm heading out on Wednesday for Maine and possibly New Hampshire for a few days and will be able to tell more on how it works out.. but thus far, seems like the shorter windscreen is the way to go.. When I got caught in a down pour today, I could see over the top of the windscreen without getting soaked.. bonus. The tall and wide would protect me from the rain a little better but depending on conditions would make it scary trying to see through it instead of over it.. It's all about trading off comfort and safety until you have a good balance..
  3. :bang head:My tire size is 150-90B15 I want to go to an elite 3 it only comes in 150-85 v 15 the 85 and 90 is the difference but it shouldn't change the handling any?
  4. I have a 97 RSTD.It seems to lean a little to much for me. I have heard their is a difference in length and they are longer on the later models. Does anyone have any input into this. I think the 05 models have a longer stand. If this is so does any one have one the would like to part with.I really would like to find a longer kick stand. Thanks all, Steve
  5. Just in case anyone is interested, Black Owl is back. Got really tired of not getting any responses to my requests as Cerberus, so will see if going back to my original screen name makes any difference. http://www.postsmile.com/img/summer/95.gif
  6. Thanks Rick. I have put on about 600 miles on the bike since I put the "new" seat. Was not easy with the Jersey weather and it's awsome. I can now ride with out the butt ache. Made a huge difference for me. My butt and I both thank you from the bottom of our ...well...bottoms. Thanks again Rick. Bill
  7. This comes up again and again in the forums...I wonder...has anyone actually proved or disproved this? Say you took one of each, with equal ability riders, and had a quarter mile shootout? Make sure the bikes are both in a good state of tune, about equal (stock) weight, more or less, and ran them down the strip...wonder who would win? Is there any real difference in the motors? Or is there just a big weight difference? Hmmmm....
  8. Just bought some Dunlop Elite 3 tires and man what a difference. In the past I was skeptical when people say they switch tires and have a different riding experience with the new tires. I figure, tires are tires, shouldn't feel any difference between the different brands. I didn't feel the difference between Dunlop 404's and Metzelers on my previous bike. Well I am skeptical no more. The Elite 3's help the bike be very responsive. Since I have been used to the Metzelers (previous tires on the bike) I have to be careful at times. I am not used to the new tires yet and what I consider improved handling.
  9. . What more can I say. What a difference. Like sitting on a cloud. Harry
  10. I was just wondering the difference between the royal star tour classic wich I have and the royal star tour delux:240:

    VMAX rear end

Well I got my new Vmax rear end this last weekend, and installed it as well as a new clutch. What a difference the new rear gears make. I need to adjust the speed O healer, which I will do this next weekend, but WOW, I really like the mid range power difference from the old rear end gears. While I had the tire off, I went ahead and lubed up the hub according to the write up on the tech link. I don't know if the new rear gears or the lube made the difference but I don't have the awful wine any more. I have the more powerful stator comming this next week, and I will install it later this month. I talked to the guys at Blue Ridge sport max and they really seem to be some very nice folks. I paid the whole $600.00 for the new gears and sent them back my old rear end. The day he got my old rear gears he refunded me my $300.00 core charge. With the new stator I am planning on getting the full ensamble from warm gear. I already have the gloves, I just need the rest of the gear.
  12. Alright I'll admit it, I have been one of the members "lurking" and have not posted yet. I seem to visit the site several times a day, especially this time of year (Minnesota). I have owned my Venture for about a year and a half and will admit I am somewhat "on the fence" about it. The weight does not bother me, after the I-basket the whine is much much better, the ride is smooth and it handles OK for what it is. Maybe its just me (or what I'm comparing it to - previous bike GL1800) but to me it needs more power. I know about using the RPM of the V-4 and keeping it in that range. but I'd rather not have to be in 4th gear, 2 up on the highway to maintain 75 mph with a headwind of 15 to 20 mph. 5th gear would loose speed or be wide open to maintain speed. (2 up our combined weight 320 lbs). I have read about the rear gear swap and was hoping to hear from some of you that have done it, what your opinions are after having it for awhile. (performance, fuel economy, e.t.c) I think I read that its a 10% (roughly) difference in gearing... does that mean 17% speedo error? On a related note, could a resistor be used instead of a speedo-healed to correct the difference? Just Curious...? Sorry to make up for all this time lurking in one post!
  13. I haven't had time to do much riding in the last year. I decided to go for a ride today I installed the new dry cell battery turned the key hit the button and she came to life. I rode into town and gave her a bath then off for a couple of hours of ecstasy. It was kinda rough being cold and my butt out of practice, the only difference between a corbin seat and a piece of plywood is the corbin won't give you splinters. The temps were only in the upper 60s but I managed to survive. I thought about you northerners but not for long.
  14. well i got my wing on the road this morning with my totally reworked racetech forks. what a difference in the ride. disabled the antidive with the mod and it really handles the washboard bumps now. really made a noticable difference. did anyone ever wonder why we can buy a new car and don't have to buy seats, modify suspension so it rides and handles right, change the steering wheel so it's more comfortable, etc. if any one should be able to build a perfect bike it ought to be the japenese. please don't let this go political. bill
  15. There are always two models of the RSV what accounts for the $600 dollar price difference. Other than paint I don't see that big of difference.
  16. What's the difference between the gold and blue dot R1/R6 calipers??? Any difference beside the color???
  17. I got my CT on last Saturday and did the full driveline lube while I was at it. It's the Kumho 165/80R15. I static balanced it with 1 oz. First of all, I would probably order a Vredestien if I did it again; just to see if it's any better. The Kumho took 110/112lbs to seat both sides and the sidewalls felt a little thin. On the wheel with air in the tire the sidewalls don't feel too bad. I'm running 42lbs right now. I finally got it all back together last night and rode it about 4 miles around the neighborhood. This morning I rode to work the long way 'round which included about 2 miles on the interstate up to 75mph. I'll be riding a bit more today. My first impressions are that I can't tell much, if any, difference between the handling of this and a MT. So at this point I have a tire that handles the same, cost a 1/3 of the MT I would have put on, has a 25% higher weight rating and should wear out 3-4 times slower than an MT. I may hate it tomorrow but I'm happy with it today! The driveline lube made the biggest noticeable difference. Much smoother and quieter now. (Stabbing the driveshaft was a PITA though.) If you haven't done it, I suggest you do it, asap. Made a world of difference. Now I gotta find me some RK mufflers!
  18. Well I replaced the Bridgestones with Dunlops (404) after chatting with Gary a while ago. I cannot believe the difference!! The bike handles more nimbly and I no longer feel those little cracks etc on the asphalt. I did not go with the narrower front this time - may try that next but so far - WOW - what a difference!! Cheers Eugene
  19. Wow is all I can say... thanks to Rick @ Buckeye Performance I just finished a Progressive spring upgrade and shock rebuild. What a difference. Only able to put about 20 miles on tonight, but so far the results are great.
  20. I found two different looking K&N YA1399 filters for the 2nd. Gen RSV’s, what is the difference, besides the price? http://www.dollarrider.com/detail.cfm?Category_ID=86&manufacturer_ID=143&product_ID=8034&model_ID=42 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/02-07-Yamaha-Royal-Star-Venture-1300-K-N-Air-Filter_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247QQcategoryZ35597QQihZ010QQitemZ200235861443QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V
  21. Finally got spare rims finished, got the new Venoms mounted (after half an hour of cursing and fighting the tire tools) and tonight swapped out the front rim. All I can say is WOW, what a difference over the Dunlops. Since I had both tires on rims, I was able to compare them side by side. Even with the rotors on the new rims, the venom weighed at least 4lbs less than the dunlop. On the bike it was even more of a difference, steering is light, bike flicks like my FJ1200. Very impressed. Tomorrow it's going to be the rear if I can work up the enthusiasm to tear the whole rear of the bike apart. http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j27/Vermincelli/Venture/IMG_0827.jpg Unfortunately I get to pull the front back off in a month. fork seals have had it. I just had to see how the new tires looked and handled.
  22. OMG! What a difference. I use to have a slow starter once the bike was hot. Comtemplated replacing the starter or at least removing it and cleaning it out like is recommended somewhere on this site. But I thought I'd try the battery cable upgrade first. Wow! What a difference. No matter how hot things get, even on the hottest days around here in Texas, starts right up like it is the first start that morning. I am really impressed. If all you 1st gen owners haven't upgraded to the larger battery cables, I highly recommend you get after it right away. I at first thought it would be a difficult task but the entire procedure only took less than two hours and a little bit of vaseline. AND, I didn't have to mess around with pulling that extremely difficult starter.
  23. Are the frames the same on the 99 and up Venture, royal star, tourer delux up to the latest model? The two brackets with holes in them that are welded to the frame btm. And any other upstructions below frame difference?
  24. The adjuster is to call today with a value on my 87' venture royale that was hit. It looks as if he is calling it the XVZ13DT model. What difference is there in the XVZ13DTC model. Just in case he is using the wrong research program. Thanks Dave
  25. Took her around for spin checking out the new Venom's. WOW! is all I can say, what a difference the smaller Avon makes in slow manuvering compared to the 404's. I am now a believer!!!!!!!!!!!
