  1. I just got back tonight after a 6 day 3260 mile ride to see the Grand Canyon and do a little Route 66 riding. As most of you probably already know...it has been HOT. Most days the temps on the trip were near 100 degrees or HIGHER. On Tuesday in Tucumcari...the temperature in the SHADE was 110 degrees. The day before we left Flagstaff at 6am and the temp was 38 degrees...by 1pm that afternoon we were in Needles, CA with the temp at 108 degrees. I got heat exhaustion twice...one time was pretty scary for me. Proper hydration is the key (and common sense)...I just assumed the hydration was for everyone but me. OK...enough about me. The bike performed flawlessly, had PLENTY of power for some of those mountainous climbs, and other than getting "squirelly" on some of the interstate roads in Oklahoma City (their ROADS SUCK!!!)...I was very happy with how the bike did. But I do have a complaint and also a question. The complaint (an age old complaint)...is the heat coming off the bike. To be honest I never really "noticed" until today and that's because after 3000 miles of wearing boots...I slipped on my dockers for the final 260 miles...and the heat was tremendous down there. But more than that, I also have a thermometer mounted near the turn signal switch and ALL DAY it read 110-120 degrees. No wonder I was getting heat exhaustion. Now the question...several times after riding for awhile when I was coming to a stop...the front would WOBBLE. When this happened the bike was barely moving...at highway speeds (and faster)...the bike was smooth as butter. So what could cause this VERY SLOW SPEED WOBBLE? OH...and the Flagstaff, AZ forest fires that are burning out of control...right behind (well a few miles)...our motel. THAT THING IS HUGE...smoke everywhere and we could see it from the Grand Canyon (80 miles away). Thanks. Wally
  2. 650 miles today...no big deal...but heat index of about 108 degrees!!!! http://www.triptrackmobile.com/tpviewer.php?l3=320ef6a3e22fceeda20d7ced2c8d63cbf48b7a6e&l4=e5f11834c8f0f87c9feec4fb1cb4e616161df50d
  3. We took a small ride to Rachel, NV on the "Extraterrestrial Highway", with a group of friends and stopped at the Little-A’Le’Inn gift shop and general tourist trap..... That is near the famous Area 51 it was about a 340 mile round trip. The weather there in Rachel was great! We left Vegas early this morning, but man!! Coming back around 15:00 hrs.....we arrived to the start of HELL......106 DEGREES!! Put the bike in the garage and went inside the house A/C .....jumped in the shower and .....ahhhh felt good again enjoying a few ICE COLD glasses of Lemonade.......LIFE IS GOOD. Tomorrow poker run starts at 1000 hrs and will be home by about 1800 hrs. Supposed to hit 110 but we will see. +/- a couple degrees it still feels the same (like sticking tour head in a oven) Great thing is NO HUMI-DID-ITY so not to bad REALLY..............Ron:dancefool:
  4. Well, I got my new windshield last week from F4 with the goldwing vent. Since then I've ridden when it was around 50 degrees and over 80 degrees, {a day apart so I didn't have to wait}. I was happy with the protection the 4 inch wider shield provided and it seemed I could hear the stereo better at highway speeds. When you open the vent you get a good rush of air at chest level. You can adjust the opening to whatever you like. I had them mount the vent 3 1/4 inch above the slot in the bottom of shield {you have to have the chrome strip off to see this} and it ended up being about 1/2 inch above the dash so you could probably lower it more if you wanted. This was on a standard OEM height shield. Nice not to see a fog when the sun shines.
  5. But I've gotta go pick my bike up from a buddy's house two hours away today. It's 44 degrees and raining, so I might be a popcicle by the time I get back!
  6. I started my project of converting my WOC fairing onto this bike. It was set up for the LC1500 and they don't make brackets for the RSTD at WOC. I'm making my own and picked up a piece of aluminum yesterday and got it bet 90 degrees today and started cuting them out to fit. I will update this as I go along in case anyone else needs to do this in the future.
  7. As the frigid & cold weather starts to taper off here in the south, I find myself doing what a lot of others are doing... Watching the weather forecasts like our lives depend on it. Obviously, it's been great riding weather here in ENC for the past few days, cresting over 60 degrees... Today is supposed to be around 66 degrees... Outstanding. There WAS, however, a minor oversight on my part... Overnight lows. I'm all dressed for work, in my slacks & polo shirt, strapping on my leather jacket, and gloves, with a fleece underneath. I opt for the half-helmet with the removable ear muffs... I'm ready to roll. 34 degrees as I'm beginning my 40 mile journey to work... Stupid, stupid, stupid... Shoulda bought chaps when I was at Shamrock Biker Outfitters last time. 20 minutes in, legs go numb, face moves really slow when I try to poorly sing along with The Doobie Brothers (jammin' from my Shark Radio) but my torso is cozy... Khakis are the worst cold-weather gear known to man, next to shorts. I'd like to say "I don't know what I was thinking..." but I do. I was thinking, "It's gonna be 66 on the way home. This is worth it." It's really not. I should've just ridden when I got home from work. Since I don't have any lower deflectors to go with my Nat'l Cycle Switchblade windshield, the wind came right over the tank, and in my face. Clicked a few values into a wind chill calculator, and it was about 15 degrees. I've been at work for 2 hours, and I STILL don't have complete feeling in my legs, not to mention they are STILL cold. If anyone knows a nice alternative to spending $150 on lower deflectors from Nat'l Cycle, or fabricating a mount from my factory windshield/lower mounts, let me know. I'm gonna need 'em.
  8. i have : 3, 50w, 32 degrees....2, 50w 12 degrees...and 2, 30w, yamaha..........passing lamps, par36....the 50w are sold under the haloXen name...they all work shipping is included....however, since i don't know how fed ex ground handles canada...i won't send them there FIRST COME....FIRST SERVED....
  9. A friend took this out on the interstate the other day. I wasn't even 30 degrees and there were patches of ice under the bridges!
  10. 0 here again, heats on in the garage, if i can't ride, i can still work on them. there is a warming trend in sight. maybe 30 degrees this week. i hate this global warming. maybe al gores hot air could heat my garage.
  11. Seems like I've seen a post on here before about the trunk lid stay being changed but I can't find it now. Has anyone else ever modified the trunk lid to open farther? I don't see why it can't open all the way up to 90 degrees or even so far as to let the backrest lie on the rear seat. What are your thoughts or links?
  12. My new RSV has been sitting in the garage for 3 weeks since I bought it waiting for me to finish a huge work project and today is the day!!! It is going to be an awesome day here in Western NY and she is idling in the driveway right now. Its 44 degrees currently and it will only get warmer. WAHOO!!!! See ya on the flip side!
  13. The hubby and I are heading to Glacier then up to Banff mid July. We are camping so space is limited on what we bring. I always wear my chaps anytime the weather is below 80 degrees F. If I can get by leaving them home, it would save a little room. Is the weather up there warm enough to get by without them? Thanks Deb
  14. is a week away. But we have the new trunk fitted and ready to use,(http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=329275#post329275) and a new tent, and 80 degrees today and only down to 55 tonight, and the day off, so why wait.... Later, Scooter bob and Karen:Venture:
  15. Woke up today to 5+ inches of snow here in central Illinois. Was really wierd because it was classified as a "Thundersnow". Rain changing to snow with thunder. Didn't bother me too much because the bike is still dismantled. Good excuse though to get back into the garage and get at it because it is supposed to be 58 degrees tomorrow! Funny thing about the tear down - I was just getting new tires and then things got carried away! You guys have a lot of great mods for the 2nd gens and I've had a lot of fun learning about the bike. Jinksy
  16. Hi friends has anyone changed the driver and passenger seats on a RSTD to the RSV seats? Snowing like hell here by the way; yesterday it was 76 degrees out. Damn maybe this weekend I can get out my 09 RSTD. Wyoming Tom
  17. I have had motorcycles for years but my bride is scared to death to ride. I bought the 2004 Royal Star Venture in December; yesterday and today it was over 70 degrees and I got her to ride with me. The bigger bike and comfort has sold her; I now have a partner. She already wants the leather jacket.
  18. Switch

    Mea Culpa

Anyone who rides a 50 mile round trip in moderately strong wind with a chill factor of less than 20 degrees ought to have their head examined.
  19. It was 54 degrees and clear. We got out for about 3 hours and just wandered about for awhile. Honey
  20. glad i got all the bikes rode yesterday. it was 35 degrees. the bottom dropped out last night. right now it's 4 degrees. expected to make it to zero tonight. looks like a very early winter. this global warming is killing me.
  21. The FIRST day of winter!!!!! On a good note, the days will start getting longer and on a bad note, tomorrow's low here is to be about 13 degrees F. It has been a good day today and I did get in about a 40 mile ride at about 57 degrees. This may be my last ride of 08 and I have put a little over 8,000 miles on the bike this year. It has been a pretty good year. RandyA
  22. In Indiana........ Looks like we will have an opportunity to ride due to one day of warm weather. Man, I'm hoping that this is true. I'm not sure where I'll go, but I might just point the bike somewhere and see where it takes me. As I write this it's about 18 degrees but Sunday will be almost 50 degrees...hopefully...
  23. For almost a month now, we have been running 15 to 20 degrees below normal. Our normal temp for this time of year is around 53 degrees, right now it is 33 degrees. If this keeps up, this is going to be a miserable winter. We did have a couple of days around Thanksgiving that got up to normal and did get in a couple days of short rides, but this is not fun at all. If I was riding I could fill the bike up for about $7 instead of almost $20. RandyA
  24. just a quick question. Without getting electric gloves what do you guys and ladys out there use to keep your hands warm? My wife and I rode tonight at 32 degrees and that was the only problem area for me. What gloves are recomended? Thanks in advance. David
