  1. I got one of those Skydoc clutch upgrade kits and thought since I was going into the clutch I would see if I could get the dealer to get me a new "I" basket to try to quieten the Jensen mobile chirp down some and do it all at once. I have a new I basket and convinced the dealer to let me install it (cause I do not want some Jack Ass messing around with my bike). Now I have to get the old clutch basket back to him pretty soon. Poor Skydoc is having a rough time with the clutch springs he got for all of us and I know now he probably wishes he would have not got his self into all that... I know he is doing all he can. I know I could probably use my original and the .60 spring but...I have already sent my .60 spring back to him for replacement when the replacements arrive. I was wondering if I could do the Skydoc clutch upgrade (pull the 1/2 disc out and replace with the full disc...trash the extra parts etc.) except use my original spring...and install the I basket so I can get it back to the dealer. I do not have any slippage so far on my clutch, only 17000 miles on the bike. I just wanted to make sure I do not have any slipping in the future. When Skydoc gets the new springs in...all I have to do is pop the new spring on to complete the upgrade. Help me out here...the dealer called again today wanting the old clutch basket back...so I need to move pretty quickly on this. If I have to swap out the I basket and put all the original parts in...that is ok...just trying to optimize my work on this clutch. Also planning some big trips here soon...so I do not want this clutch to go south on me while on the road. No risk taking here. Please I need some advice here...
  2. I called my local dealer yesterday to ask about a problem I'm having on the bike. When I get up to cruising speed is when it is most noticeable, 70 mph, set cruise it feels like it has a miss or is trying to flood. Thought it might be a plug not firing but all pipes are hot. The dealer told me they have been having alot of this happening. It stems from the ethanol enhanced gasoline we now have to use. The gas is eating up the gaskets and rubbers in the carbs. Will have to have carbs rebuilt 5000 miles. At least its under warranty:bang head:. Big brother sure knows how to stick to the people. The ethanol dries out rubber and cracks and comes apart screwing everything up. Asked him what can we do to prevent this from happening again, he said he wasn't sure, have to add something with lubricity every now and then might help.Just thought everyone might want to know.
  3. head gasket leak day.. I've had my RSV now for a grand total of 18 days, sitting at work this morning I noticed a drop of something under the bike. Upon closer inspection I found that the right rear cylinder seemed to be leaking oil, very diffulcult to see back there running my hand along the valve cover I knew it wasn't there it had to be lower. Called my stealer and explained just how upset I was about the fact that this happened and did they not go over a bike before delivery to a customer. After an hour and half ride to the dealers and three hours it was brought to my attention that they believe it has a service bulletin on this problem, not impressed was I and explained that to them, why when I called them at 1130am and then rode down there in two hours they didn't get on it and check for a SB. Instead I sat there smoking cigs and and steaming for three hours, while they puttered around having three techs looking at the bike. I have now read up on here about the problem, and hopefully once I get the bike back this will be the end of it. One question ... what are the chances antifreeze got into the oil and may have buggered up the bearings?? Anyone here have any problems after the heads and cylinders were pulled and reassembled, due to contaminated oil before the fix? So just so I'm armed when I go back to the dealer after a major job such as this the valves should have been set correct and carbs sync done, as i want to be sure of what I'm demanding before I leave the dealer ... Thankfully the only thing I will be out is time with the bike, which rain is forecasted for the next five days, so hopefully they will get it back to me soon. Hopefully my boss isn't to pissed I just left at lunchtime and told him the bike is more important right now than work...opps..lol
  4. Yesterday our Yamaha dealer in Sumter had his annual open house. In spite of the slight rain, Pecker joined us for the ride over. We ran into Mike G while we were there!. The first picture shows Sleeperhawk and Pecker wiping down their bikes (both bikes were immaculate when we left the house!) The second one is Sleeperhawk trying out the seat Mike G has on his bike! Because of the threat of rain, a lot of people did not ride their bikes, but it was a great turn out! They had a live band with food vendors and prizes. The dealer was offering free dyno runs so both guys had their bikes tested. Sleeperhawk's Venture reached 71.2 HP at 99 mph and Peckers' Royal Star Tour Deluxe made it at 72.6 HP at 111 mph. :thumbsup2:There was a great difference between the sound of their bikes and some Road Stars that were being tested. The Road Stars sounded anemic! The last picture is of a flashlight that Jacque got for George to use for the bike and it came in handy today when George was checking the wiring on the bike (I did not have to hold a flashlight all that time!)
  5. Just wonder if anyone as see any new 07 midnights RSV at a dealer. If so what were they asking for it, and where is was located?
  6. Went to the dealer to replace my nearly empty can of Plexus. A can that I paid about 9 bucks for last year. Shock set in as the dealer said it was now 17.99 a can!!!! 22.00 msrp price!! No way........Maybe I should have invested my money in their company...sheesh.
  7. I purchased a pair of E3's at the end of last season. I'm having the local dealer install them. Is $200 a fair price if I supply the tires? Kevin
  8. Okay I just got my venture and it is an 83. I am going to change the oil and I understand that the tranny shares oil with the engine. After reading a few things on the net I have decided, even if momentarily, to use rotella 15-40. I have used this oil before in cars and liked it very well but I do realize this application is not a car, open for thoughts.... In all my autos I run amsoil and like it very well but amsoil here is starting to get hard to get ahold of... but I do not want to change a bike over to a synthetic due to not knowing what kind of oil was used before and if it might change things with internals. If someone can give you some insight on this I would most definitely be happy. I am going to go with the E3 plugs and will let forum know how that goes. Now what I need is some mirrors. My bike came with no mirrors and the dealer wants 105 apiece. I found a place on line that advertises that they are half of what a dealer charges for used ones but gee there price was 145 a piece for a used one... I have seen a set on ebay for 40 but they were ensribed with the last owners pilot and navigator name.... i missed the auction but I guess I could of gotten new mirror for it.. Also is Yamaha the place to get the raditor hoses? Mine setup for quite a while so I feel real confident they will be go at any given time or when I get the furthest from home...lol..
  9. I posted about this earlier. When I got back from maintenance day last year my battery went dead. I have replaced the battery twice since then but it would go dead unless I kept it on the battery tender. I took my bike to the dealer for the 48,000 mile service and asked them to find my problem. The dealer just called, my bike is ready. The rectifier was bad. I hope this is covered under warranty. I will find out tomorrow.
  10. Picked the bike up at dealer after getting a new tire. Dead battery so we jumped it at the dealer and she ran fine. Stopped at the store, (15 mile ride) would not start again but would jump start. Now at home, I charged the battery, have full lights and all but when I try to start, nothing, not even when jumping from a good battery. I have made sure the kill switch is in run but no go. I don't hear the fuel pump run either. Battery is 6 years old but I'm thinking it should at least jump start if there is any juice left. It doesn't appear to be the same symptoms as the ignition switch, which from what I read leaves just the radio operable, no lights or anything else. I will be getting a fresh battery but really I would think it should at least jump start. I leave this to the gurus out there!
  11. Quickstep tracked down a Kumho Powerstar to put on the rear of my quike.....and it was the ONLY one here in Perth!! The dealer found it in the warehouse, strange they only had one. Said they use them on old VW cobie vans.
  12. Hey All, Yesturday my youngest son Matt-age 24, came over for a Father-Son Day, we try to do this at least once a month. Matt is looking for a buddy pack deal on two four wheelers and a Yamaha 650. After Breakfeast we went 15 miles west to the next town, a Yamaha Dealer (our town only has a Harley Dealer), three cars pulled in at same time. But, I forgot they were closed on Wed. So we went 20 miles further west to the next town's Yamaha Dealer, people were getting back in their cars and other cars pulling in, but doors locked and sign said "Now Closed on Tue. & Wed". Didn't matter, we was having fun talking and seeing sights. So we headed east 75 miles across state to see my oldest son, Jimmy. Afterwards went to another Yamaha Dealer, you guessed it CLOSED, and again cars in parking lot and people looking in windows. On the way home stopped by the Harley-Davidson Dealer to look around, and Yes they were Open! Matt really liked the Fatboy. I am not sure how many Four Wheelers, Bikes, and Part Sales these Yamaha Dealers Lost by being Closed, but COME ON-WAKE UP!!!! Matt and I still had a Great Time hanging out together, but now I know why there are so many Harley Davidson's on the road. Later-James
  13. Well, since my dealer here in Searcy does not have an "air pump" on the premises, I had to go ahead and buy one (which will probably only get used a couple of times), but at least I have it now. I may decide to RENT it to my dealer for $79.95/hour though. Wally
  14. Hey all, I did compression check on my 96 RS and found low compression in cylinder #1. Added a little oil to see if it was rings or not and it made no improvement. The motor has 18k miles on it. I talked to the dealer I work with but his proposal is TOO open ended. I dont want to wind up with a $1500.00 + bill without knowing first. I live in Pa. Looking for an alternative to the dealer.
  15. Tejas Motorsports, a local Yamaha dealer, just called me and offered me $1000 for my '06 RSTD. They said they were experiencing great demand for used bikes, and wanted mine. I think what they were saying is that they were offering $1000 over the bluebook or trade-in value. I wasn't selling, so I didn't seek much clarification. When I said no thank you, I was offered a free fuel treatment on my next service. Thanks but.... The last question was whether I would be buying a new bike in the next 12 months. No. Seems pretty aggressive to cold call past customers like this. (They've mounted tires for me.) Would any of you take that offer? Dave
  16. Forgive me fellow V4 riders for I have sinned. Yesterday I took a 2010 Victory Vision for a test ride and by the end of the day I was making arrangements to turn over my 06 RSTD Midnight to the dealer. I have read several reviews and watched several You Tube videos about this bike and every one of them says that Victory got it right with the Vision, so I had to find a reason to hate this new spaceship on two wheels. Unfortunately my mission did not succeed and I am now on the factory delivery list. Perhaps it was those heated hand grips and dual control heated seats. After all it was only thirty-five degrees at the time of the test. Perhaps it was cruising along at 70 in 6th gear with my face shield up on my helmut behind the electrically adjustable windscreen and being hard pressed to know that the motor was really running. Or maybe it was those more common new bells and whistles like ABS brakes and electronically controlled fuel injection that Yamaha just doesn't want to give us V4 riders. At the end of the test ride I reluctantly decided to turn over the bike that I loved and invested heavily in over this past year for this unorthodox looking spaceship on two wheels. If any of you are looking for a very nice and very well pampered 06 RSTD Midnight with less that 5000 miles (8250 Kilometers) on the OD, my baby should be on the showroom floor at Peak Powersports in Burlington Ontario in about a weeks time. It comes with a custom tour pack c/w top rack, Mustang seats, Kuryakyn grips and highway pegs, passing lamps, HD Road King muffs, a Baron handlebar tach LED tail lights, licence plate light and rear turn signals, Strebel horn, and various other OEM and aftermarket accessories totalling close to $5K. The dealer gave me $10K on the trade-in value which also saved me $1,500 in taxes on the Victory. I am also going to have a number of accessories that I will be posting for sale that won't be turned over with the bike such as the lifting cradle, shop service manual, OEM seats and mufflers, a still in the package OEM front fender trim rail, and possibly the OEM detachable backrest c/w luggage rack (need to confirm this one with the dealer). I will post the items in the classifieds once the bike is turned over, but feel free to PM me in the mean time. http://i46.tinypic.com/2vj2bdi.jpg
  17. Over the winter I had reported that what I thought was a dealer installed I-basket (last July) actually was a G-basket. I complained to the dealer and eventually got an I-basket which eliminated almost all of the whine. A few of you commented that you were thinking about pulling your clutch basket to verify whether or not you do or don't have an I-basket (when you felt that you do). Just wondering if anyone has followed through and what was discovered?
  18. Thought I'd drop into a couple of our local Yamaha shops and see what was available for windshields (other than stock). Like a wider one and maybe a bit shorter than stock. So, I asked the question.. "What options do you offer for windshields for a Royal Star Venture?" First dealer: "We have a few different ones but you also have to buy the mounting hardware." Me: "What mounting hardware? The windshield bolts to the existing fairing bracket." First dealer: "For what kind of bike is it?" Me: "A 2006 Royal Star Venture" First dealer: "Let me look" ... she goes through a couple catalogues muttering about the brackets and then says "We don't list anything for 2006, only 1996 thru 2001 for a Royal Star" Me: " I said Royal Star Venture.... they are made from 1999 thru 2010 and are all the same" First dealer: "Well, I don't list anything and you'll still probably have to buy the mounting kit" Me: "Forget it!" and I walked out. Second Dealer: (I asked the same question but spoke with a sales rep) "Yamaha sells one. I'll get a printout for you" He comes back and sure enuf, it's a shorter, wider one... to the tune of $288. Me: "What about non-Yamaha ones...??" Second Dealer: "I don't think anyone makes them ... and if they did, the quality just wouldn't be there." Me: "OK, thanks" ... and I leave. geeeeeesh! What the heck is the matter with these people around here... they just don't cater to the "touring rider" by offering much of anything in the way of accessories for the RSV, let alone knowing much about them it seems. I remember several years ago when I had my '85 Venture I had to go to a Kawasaki shop to get a new "non-Yamaha" windshield and a pair of Jardine mufflers coz the local Yammi dealer "couldn't get them".... it must be that Yamaha is very restrictive as to what their dealers can / can not sell.
  19. I have a dumb question here. If it has been answered many times before, my apologies. I've spent a good amount of time searching and did not find a direct answer to my question. I've done wheel bearings on cars and trucks numerous times, but never on a bike. I don't really know a whole lot about them other than to take them out, spin them to check for flat spots, smooth rolling, etc. then grease the crap out of them and then put them back in. I am looking to replace the front bearings on my 01 RSV (I have ~40k miles on it. got the bike at ~28k. Full records of dealer recommended services within 50 miles of the recommended service point), found them on partshark.com for $10.97/piece. My questions are: 1) Is that a reasonable price, or would hitting an autoparts store for a generic replacement (if possible) be a better way to go. 2) Is it just a single wide 'bearing' or are there two (one for each side) -- (I know, probably a dumb question, but I figured it was better to ask then order the wrong number of them) -- DO'H, Found the answer to this on the next fiche I checked. 2, duh. 3) Do I need to grease them before I put them on? Can the old ones simply be re-greased and reinstalled? (I figured for 20 bucks for a set, I might as well just replace them even if they can be greased ) 4) Do I need new oil seals (I presume 2 of them; ie. one for each side)? 5) Any other parts that will need to get the job done? Like I said, I know, some dumb questions - but I much rather ask and then get it done right the first time than what the other options could lead to. Thanks a lot folks! Oh yea, for what it is worth, most of my riding is in what would typically be considered 'extremely dusty conditions'. Thank you very much west Texas... EDIT: I vaguely recall some folks either ordering bearings (possibly OEM from a dealer) and getting the wrong ones. Was that an issue with the dealer goofing up, or is it an incorrect part number on the fiche? -- This is also why I wanted to ask this question...
  20. I went to a local dealer here in Omaha, NE this past Saturday and was surprised to see 3 1st Gens. I haven't seen too many period, let alone at a dealer. I didn't talk with any of the Salesmen, (tough to find at this dealer). But, I did look them over some with my father. I know nothing about them, so I couldn't begin to guess what year(s). They definately are different than the 2nd Gens. To me, they remind me of the older Goldwings. - (No offense intended.) My father has never seen one before, but said he kinda liked them. craigr
  21. I have been looking for a Billet Clutch Cover for some time. It looks like this is one of the discontinued Venture items. I have been in touch with a nice few dealers and its not a real popular item and they just didn't stock it. Has anyone seen one at their local dealer anywhere? My list of accessories is getting very very short and this is one of the few items I would like to get! So what I'm asking is if somewhere out there in Venturerider.org world would be able to get me one somewhere. My dealer don't stock a Venture, so accessories are nonexistent! If you come across one and are willing to ship it to me please get in touch. (I'll send the funds whatever way works best) Thanks Much Keith
  22. Alright...The clutch is killing my hand. It was especially bad today for some reason...the gloves (it's cold here) seemed to make it worse. I took my bike to the dealer today for some work and rode to the dealer with STOCK GRIPS...and while I was having the other work done, I told them to change the grips out to the Kuryakn ISO grips (which I used for 6 years on my previous bike)...and even with those grips...I still am having pain when I clutch...I did notice my hand is way up on the grip. Just curious if ANY OTHER members are having the same problems and what you did about it...maybe change out the levers? Thanks, Wally

    2010

Has anyone seen a 2010 venture at a dealer or bike show. I got a Star catalog at the dealer last week and Black with flames is starting to look better.
  24. I purchased my 07 RSTD about 3 months ago used from a Harley dealer. I was reading on the YAmaha website about the warrenty and it said I had ten days to register the bike at a Yamaha deAler which I haven,t done. Do you think I will have problems when I take it for warrenty repAirs? Does the deAlers ask for proof of warrenty? Mark
  25. It's no secret that New Enough is an excellent company and offers customer service like few other companies. I know from personal experiences in the past. I own a pair of Firstgear riding pants and seem to have lost the liner. I did not buy them from New Enough but I have been unsuccessful contacting anyone at Firstgear. NE put me on hold and tried as well and couldn't get anyone to answer the phone either. I started calling Firstgear's 800 # a few weeks ago with no luck. I even tried e-mailing them. Needless to say I don't believe I'll be buying Firstgear anymore. The gentlemen said they didn't sell just the liners for the pants but he would try and track some down. He called me back an hour later and said he was able to get in touch with a FG dealer who was trying to track down the liners. He took all the info and passed it to the dealer and promised to call me back. Keeping in mind that NE is making nothing off this transaction I was impressed. I've bought a lot of gear from NE and will continue to do so. PS. the web site listed on the FG pants has not worked either for the last month. www.firstgear-usa.com (EDIT) I just tried the link from this post and the site opened. I tried again from my browser and it's still not working. Not sure what's happening here. (EDIT-EDIT) I found a direct number at the web site and left a message. We'll see what happens with FG now.
