MY 2009 RSV had a fuel smell even when gas was shut off for hours after it was shutdown. Should it take the dealer over two weeks to get parts to fix this? he said 3 to 5 days for a carb gasket?

I keep having a problem with my battery going dead. I rode my bike last thursday and didn't get to ride it this weekend because of the weather. I went out this morning to ride it to work and the battery is dead. A couple of months ago my dealer kept it for 2 weeks and checked everything on the bike and determined the recifier was bad so he replaced it and my battery under warranty. Now it's dead again. Man this is frustrating. I guess I better get back to the dealer as my warranty expires 9/3.

Today...I noticed that the windshield on my 08 RSV was a little "loose". So I pulled the top fairing screws and removed the chrome trim. Now I can see why the windshield was loose! Missing 2 screws COMPLETLY and 3 screws just about ready to fall out. The screw that mounts in the hole in thw windshield is one of the screws that is MIA. Closed inspection reveals that screw hole in the fairing is completely broken off. (insert swear word here). Since it looks like the screws may have fallen inside the fairing, I decide to crack the fairing to look for the screws. The GOOD...I found one of the screws. The BAD??? The crossmember that the windshield screws actually attach to is held in place by a frickin' TIE WRAP! The bolt holes that SHOULD be used for mounting the windshield crossmember are rusty...which means that the two flange bolts where never installed. Worse yet, where the windshield crossmembers connects to the inner fairing, those are completely broken off as well. AND...two of the tabs on the Chrome Trim are broken.... The dealer I bought the bike from went out of business several months ago, and the dealer I'm currently has already replaced the turnk lid and left lower fairing due to cracks and broken pieces. He's gonna have a stroke..cause now he will have to replace the entire fairing (both inner and outer). Has anyone else encountered these types of issues? I know that the bike is still under warranty, but I'm pretty sure the dealer is going to question how these things got broken. Do you think these "failures" are due to Yamaha "engineering" or the fault of the 16-year old mechanic making $8 bucks an hour to uncrate and assemble these bikes at the dealership?? Me...I'm on the fence!

Our harley dealer here in Albany, Georgia is closing. They have a salellite dealership on I 75 in Tifton, Georgia and will be moving everything from Albany to Tifton. The Albany dealership lost $500,000 last year. The Albany dealership has never been able to get it together. The current dealer is the third or fourth owner. The original owner was a perfect example of how not to run a business. He ran off more business than he got. The Tifton location has been doing very well. I wish them success.

I took a trip form Montreal to Vancouver 14,000km over 28 days. What a trip nice ride, people, weather and scenary.Only one glitch in the trip The Yamaha dealer in Kelowna. We were three couples, two riding Honda's, and us with the Venture. We all needed an oil change so off we went my friends to Honda and me to Yamaha. Guess what? The dealer did not want to change my oil that day even if I mentionned I was leaving early next morning:bang head:. He said all was taken and their policy is not to take walk ins. They have two sites so the other one wanted me to leave the bike for the day and they would maybe fit me in. What should I do in the meantime with no ride????? not their problem. I ended up in a Victory :clap2:bike shop with great service and a friendly atmosphere, even if I was riding a Yamaha. Bought gloves while I was there, one hour later I was out and ready to ride. My message to the Kelowna dealer is he might be good in boats and four wheelers but as a bike shop he is unworthy of giving sevice and should not sell motorcycle. If they can't help the riders to continue their journey they are not a bike shop. Oh and talk about all the ribbing I got from my Honda friends. If I had a Harley, Victory, Honda, I would have had service but the Kelowna Yamaha dealer:thumbdown:, no sir. I had to pass this on and I am sending an email to their offices so they know how I feel. Thanks for reading.

I wanted to post a good comment about dealer Turn1 in Plymouth, Indiana. They are a dealer for Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, and Victory (and Polaris). I had tire troubles with my old Bushtec trailer on the trip to Potato Creek. After several stops and tele calls elsewhere trying to find new tires and tubes, Turn1 took care of me. They had tubes in stock, and ordered a pair of new tires for me which they installed on Thursday as I was leaving the International Rally. They were knowledgeable, and good to work with, and made time for me while I was on the road. And their prices seemed quite fair. I'll point out that they have a pair of new-old stock Ventures on the floor. A 2009 Red/Black, and a 2008 Silver S model. And a used 2009 Seashell/Raven. Also having a Victory factory truck demo days on July 30-31 which I wish I was nearby to take advantage of. http://turn1.com/

OK you Goldwingers - even though I don't ride a wing here is a dealer you got to remember. Harrisonburg, VA - Blueridge power sports, just south of Harrisonburg couple miles on Rt. 11. I was at a ride in and one of the guys on his trike just made it to the dealer. Universal joint needed replacing. None in stock. Now this is a Friday late afternoon. Being as he couldn't keep on going, he left the bike there. Maybe 2 hours later he gets a call - come on over and pick up your bike. Here the dealer took the part off of a brand new trike sitting on the floor so the guy could continue his ride. Never heard of anything like that. Definetly a dealer to keep in mind.

This is ridiculous. I cannot believe this. Not only did I miss the Nelson meet because of dealing with tire issues (along with a few other things, one involved a broken Kitchen window in my house). Now, I am going to be even LATER. My brand new E3 that I got on last Wednesday, now has a split in the sidewall. I was packed, ready to go and doing my final check over everythign before I went to bed for the night (to get up and take off tomorrow morning ~ 5) and what do I see? A split. Yippee. What do you all think? This tire is literally brand new, I have less than 20 miles on it. Sadly my dealer is closed Sunday and Monday so I have to wait until Tuesday to get anywhere with this. Someone shoot me. Maybe it is nothing, I don't know a whole heck of a lot about tires, so maybe I am over reacting... By the way the date code on the tire is 3707 - which I expressed my displeasure with to the dealer immediately when I saw that, but of course, they get what they get from the warehouse and as long as it is within the 5 years they can sell them.

Been dealing with the local dealer for a number of years with sleds and bikes! Lost a lot of faith in them today! Did an oil change on the bike and checking everything over lights etc. What the H.ll turn signal on left the front blinks right and visa versa other way! The dealer installed passing lihhts for me about 5000km ago and hooked the sinals up BACKWARDS! As I walk into dealer this am the salesman says how are you I said glad I did not get smoked you guys hooked up the signal lights backwards. Response from service guy was no way we would have done that! I put the keys on the desk and said I will be back later this morning for the bike!. At the front door I spopped and told him YOU installed the passing lights and YOU assembled the bike!! When I picked up the bike they were very sheepish and appologetic! How fortunate I did not get smoked at an intersection!!! Lawsuit would have been underway for sure! Lesson learned check over everything YOURSELF!!!! Sorry this was such a book! Ken!

I have an 06 venture and someone decided they needed the top of my CB antenna more than I did. Replacement in Canada from dealer is $230.00. Does anyone have any reasonably priced alternatives?

What's everyone running for engine oils and final drive oils, I can't see paying a dealer to do this every 3000 miles. I'm going to and do most maint. myself. Thanks

With only 4,000 Km on my Venture, I had battery issues which caused me to require bump starting if there was a hill or a couple of willing BC Ferry workers to push the beast, or a jump start, which requires taking off the driver seat. What a pain THAT is! Has anyone come up with an alternative to the awkward nuts that secure the seat? My dealer replaced the battery, so I may not need to remove the seat for a while, but it would be handy to have an alternative for any future needs. Thanks for any help.

I have been having problems with the audio system intermittently locking up. Volume would freeze or error would come up etc. The dealer had it for four weeks looking for the problem. Changed the mpu, controller cb etc all to no avail. Today while I was installing handlebar riser spacers I split the fairing and removed the headlamp assembly. There it was. The harness for the audio was pinched under the headlamp adjusting bolt. I didn't split the harness open to see how badly the wires are crushed. I just unpinched the harness. If I still have problems I will ask the dealer to replace it. Hope these pictures help if anyone else is having similar issues. Mike

Just wanted ya ta know I put dat tire I bought from you at M.D. on yesterday. I figured I had better do it before I go on Vacation in two weeks in the U.P. I had 21,294 miles on that Avon Viper without any cracks. I am happy with these tires. I took the wheel off and then ran it up to the dealer and had it mounted and balanced for $20. I waited for only 20 minutes and back home I went. Thanks for the good deal Larry. Hope you and Joyce are doing great.

Coming thru Juaquin Texas today, I passed by an old run down building with an old black and yellow yamaha sign. So, I stopped and was amazed! In the window was what looked like a new 80 something yamaha 1100 midnite edition inline 4 with about a 1/8" of dust. in the front room of this old store, I saw atleast 15-20 motors from Decati's, yamaha's, indian's, etc. Some looked new, some used. I walked next door and man said I was the 3rd one today to ask bout the store. Unfortunately for me the owner was in Austin. The neighbor store said he had a ton of motorcycles, some still in the crate. He used to be a yamaha dealer back when. In short it was like looking thru a time window and from what I saw it was so cool. I plan on going back later this week or next and see if he'll give the tour and for those 1st generation guys I'll keep my eyes pealed. And I'll take a my camera:)

I'm looking at buying a 2005 RSD with about 40,000 miles on it. The dealer whose selling it has done all the maintenance on it and it's in immaculate condition. What kind of issues am I likely to have. This seems to me to be high miles, but I'm used to riding snowmobiles which would long be in the scrap pile before they got these miles. The dealer wants about $8000 for it which I think is kind of high. Is it?. My wife and I are looking at doing a few trips a year of a few hundred to a thousand miles each. With neither having ridden for the last 30 years, is this to much of a bike. We are both in our early 50s and in good shape. I plan on getting used to the bike for a few thousand miles before we do any riding together. Am I nuts to be looking at a bike this big and with this many miles??

We looked at bikes! We went to 3 different dealers here, one sells only yamaha, one sells all metric bikes, and the last was the HD dealer. The Yammy dealer was eh on assistance with the bikes, the sales guy highly suggested the Vstar 250 as his "daily" bike, but it was too small, was a bit eh on him looking at the 650, and over all the inventory was low. after hubby sitting on a few bikes and getting an idea of what feels ok based on what that dealer had we went to the other dealer that sells all metric. One of the managers was kind enough to walk us through all the bikes on the floor, not just the Yammys and give us all the pluses and minuses on each bike and which ones were best suited for what we looked for in a bike, all in all about 3 hrs of his time. Giving the hubby a once over he thought that the Vstar 950 would be a better starter bike/daily driver than the 650, said the 650 just looked a bit small under him and hubby said the 650 while feeling ok, made him feel squished up on it (heh). This dealer had a Venture on the floor and we were allowed to sit on it, we agreed it's like having a motorized sofa. After spending more time with us the manager gave us his card with the # to register for the local MSF course on it. Also said when hubby gets his license and comes back he'll let us test drive the Venture on the road, which was totally cool! The manager asked me too if there was anything he could do to sell me on a bike of my own to ride, and I explained my disability (I have cerebral palsy) and told him my concerns over the shifting and braking. He showed me an automatic that I could handle easily enough. From here we went to the HD which is practically next door to the last place. We were greeted warmly, but that's about where it stopped. We walked around and hubby sat all the bikes, says they are all too short, except one or 2 of the RK bikes, but the weight is better balanced, but wasn't enough to sell him on them. What really annoyed him was when one of the sales guys fussed at me saying I dunno how to get on a bike (I was sitting in the rider seat then slipped back to the passenger seat before hubby joined me. (HD gets a demerit for that) The as we left the salesguy was very snobby and said on avg it takes 22 trips into an HD dealer before someone buys a bike, what trip is this for you? Overall we had a fun day and learned alot of information and hubby got a true idea of bikes while we were out. Now we have some questions for you guys. If we look at older used bikes say early to mid 90's models what can we expect for being able to find replacement parts for the bike? What else should we be thinking about when looking at bikes new or used? If there's a question or something I missed with looking at bikes please tell me. Regards, Tricia

Hello all. Hoping someone can help me. Up here in Coldwater Ontario Canada (yes, I do know Dick Shrivels from Coldwater- haha), I have been experiencing progressively worsening fuel mileage, backfiring on deceleration, etc. So, when I had some service done before, by the supposed 5 Star dealer in Midland Ontario (not to name names but if you recall the nursery rhyme about the name of a boy and a girl who "went up the hill to fetch a pail of water), they apparently put the caps on too tight & not straight or something, wrinkling 2 of the carb diphragms and the needle almost sitting sideways (so I am told). Apparently the diaphragms are backordered from yamaha canada until June 6. I have called around to several dealers and they do not have any in stock. I stopped going to that dealer and went to another shop that their service manager went to. He was getting his parts from a Yamaha dealer in Barrie who supposedly told them the parts would be in yesterday, then today, until...hmmm, not until June 6. Any of our US brother or sister venture riders able to get your hands on 2 diaphragms? Part number 5DM-14940-00-00 Are there any compatible aftermarket versions? The diphragms are supposedly not torn, but they are wrinkled. They are putting the bike backtogether so I can use it and day that the performance & fuel economy will be much better but I will need them replaced. This is supposed to be my anniversary weekend motorcycle ride with my wife leaving yesterday with plans to ride around Lake Michigan - but we are now 27 hours behind schedule and the bike will be ready 2 hours from now. She has taken two days vacation and pissed off...good times! Thanks for your help in advance. My email is trevor.storey@rogers.com and goes to my blackberry if anyone has any information or leads that can help me out. Thanks

I just want to throw something out here and see what ya'lls answers are. Here goes. How hard is it to put the little brass caps back on the idle mixture screw on the carbs of a 2nd Gen after you make an adjustment??? If you were a dealer, or someone that works on these bikes, would you even bother?? Could you even tell if they have ever been off??? From what I can see they are probably a PITA to get off, much less put back on.

Hello VR Forum! I'm a newbie here as I just purchased a 2006 RSTD last night. It's a sweet bike, but I already have one problem. The dealer (or someone) put the gas cap in wrong. It's stuck and won't come out. The triangle notch on the top of the cap is pointing at the road behind - the 6:00 position - when it should be pointing at the road ahead - the 12:00 position. I tried and tried to get the cap off, but had no luck. Today after work, I'm going to try to hold the key in the unlocked position while spinning the gas cap so it's in the right position to be removed. A mechanic at a local Yamaha dealer suggested this one. Any other advice?? Thanks, Greg

So...I know you guys said buy it at Honda... Honda Car Dealer or Honda Motorcycle Dealer???

When I switched to Mobile1 20w-50 synthetic, I went from a whine (never had a chirp) to a scream. Dealer just switched my basket to an "I" and put me back on Yamaha lube 20w-50 (at my request) and I'm back to a gentle whine at a different pitch and almost no whine in 5th. I can actually hear my mufflers now. I had an "F" basket and according to Rick Butler I probably should have tried a "G" basket, but don't want to push my dealer too much. At the next oil change I'll probably go back to 10w-40, but no more synthetic for me.
-
Well I'm finally getting the dreaded chirp noise on my 02 midnight. With about 11 k miles on it I guess as time goes on it will get more pronounced. Checked with the dealer about the basket change and he said the noise can still be there but may move to a different rpm and speed, but most likely won't go away. I will admit it is getting quite annoying, even my wife is noticing it to. I've had the bike almost 3 years and have tried to really like the bike, but just can't seem to get it to grow on me if you know what I mean, and now this. I like the bike for the power, comfort, and roominess, but I just can't get a liking to this bike. Was over at the dealer last week and they have an 07 on the lot on consignment, nice bike, low miles, I asked why it was for sale and the sales guy said he really didn't know the guy just wants to sell it. I've considerd selling mine last fall and now the whine issue may be the deciding factor this year, if I can only convince my wife as she likes the bike. I've been using Amsoil 10w40 since I've had it and what is the opinions on going to a heavier oil or back to dino oil ? will it quiet the chirp? Dealer says the repairs parts and labor would be around 400.00. but it may or may not cure it. Bike is out of warranty so that's not an issue. Not sure what to do at this point, any suggestions or opinions may be helpfull, thanks...
