  1. Been at the drawing board again. There always seems to be one more lil improvement that can be done. This lil creation takes care of two, maybe three things that I wanted to take care of. So not much fun in just saying what it so I'll just post a few pics and let ya guess. It's in raw condition now waiting for the epoxy to dry and will be ready for the final sanding and a few coats of paint and clear coat over the next couple of days. When it's done and mounted I'll post the finshed project. So have at it. Mike
  2. I received my renewal notice email on the 14th of this month (six days ago). Been on the run for the last few days and haven't had a chance to renew or return to the site. So tonight I tried to check in and had a red banner across the top saying that my trial membership would expire in 1123 days. Also noticed that my welcome box said my Private Message box was full. Even though that little box at the bottom of the page said I could reply, edit and post, when I tried to post something I got the screen that I didn't have the proper permissions to perform this action. OK I get the hint...Logged out and sent in my dues. Now all is right with the world. My only thought is "less than Six Days and you're shut off? And for a returning 4 year membership? Geese, new members get more slack than that.
  3. Well folks - it's that time of year again when me and my brothers spend a few days travelling to meet up, sink a few coldies, barbecue a few steaks and generally chill out. This is the seventh (consecutive) year we've done it, but this year is different and special - because our only sister is joining us. I've posted details, photos and video links in the past and this year will be no different. When I get back I'll flick you a few foters. In the mean time - brief details are - over 4 days we'll do around 1600kms (1,000 miles) each to get to our destination at Brunswick Heads on the north coast of New South Wales - and turn around after 2 days there and head home again. Who cares how far it is? It's not the destination but the ride that matters, eh? Meantime, I've made a few mods to the RSV so I can run my GPS, mobile phone and MP3 player (and still have power to spare.) I bought one of those 12V plug in gizmos that has 3 12V sockets and a USB outlet. Secured it to the top of my brake fluid canister on the right bar - using a couple of cable ties. The GPS is attached to the screen, with gaffer tape 'reinforcing'. My little 4GB MP3 player clips on to the power lead for the GPS. It's connected to the power supply by a USB lead and the earphone outlet is connected to the radio system via the Auxiliary MP3 jack. My mobile phone is in a pouch that is secured by velcro to the right side mirror stem. I've taken a photo of the set-up so you can see what I'm talking about. Catch you all back here in 4 or 5 days. Cheers, Spear
  4. Since the early days of this site, there have been folks here who have expressed the opinion that they do not like our classified area. Some have stated that they would rather have the classifieds as part of the forum and not a separate page. This poll is to allow you all to vote on this issue. Before doing so though, I would like to point out a few things that we will be giving up should we move the classifies to the forum. 1. There will be no way to hold "auctions" as are sometimes used now for St. Judes and occasionally for other reasons. 2. In order to keep it manageable, the ads in the forum will be set to expire after a pre-determined time. I'm thinking 30 days but it is open for discussion. It could be 60 or 90 days but I want to keep it to a relatively short amount of time. 3. There will be no way to "renew" an ad. The only way to renew an add will be to completely re-do the ad once it expires and is automatically deleted. 4. There will be no way to include a "buy now" feature. 5. There will be no "distance" estimate. Though it is sometimes WAY off anyway. There are probably some other things also but basically, the area will work exactly like any other area of the forum does at this time. So, please think about what you think would work the best and we'll go from there. As always, your comments are welcome.
  5. Was wondering if anyone might be planning a maintenance day for Washington State in the near future. I'd hold one but I'm just a newbie to m/c in 27 years and with less than a year with the VR, so I don't know much nor do I have a lot of VR speciality tools. I do have a new and unused Carbtune, one of those steering tools from "Dingy", do have a m/c jack. Then I have some tools that I've collected over the years for my auto with some metric sockets, wrenches and allen. Do have a torque wrench. I have a lot of odds and end tools. Nothing really expensive. I do have a fairly good size place where I could back out the 3 cars to fit several bikes on a solid cement floor if it rains or a large cement pad in front of the garage if the weather is good. Just need someone with a lot of VR maintenance experience. I do have a huge deck that can accomodate a large barbeque. I think my profile has a picture of it behind my 89 VR. The down side is that I work 26 days on and 2 days off and many of my 2 days off are spent with my wife. But if planned far enough in the future I could make one work and it would need to be on a Sunday. Oh the other thing is that my wife and I have a no alcohol rule, sorrrrry. Let me know if this interests anyone.

    boats.net

just wondering if anyone else here uses " boats.net" to buy OEM parts ??? I have bought some stuff this winter and thought the price was good and shipping real reasonable. shipping only takes a few days. just curious.
  8. Nothing to do with Ventures, but thought you guys might like to see what kind of weekend I've had. Although a geologist by profession, I'm also local elected politican official. Reports began coming in about a stranded whale in one of our bays on Thursday. So we began to mobilise crews to be ready. From previous experience its normally a dolphin or small whale, although any stranding here is rare. You can imagine our surprise when we turned up to be greeted by an almost full grown bull sperm whale, all 39 tons of it! I'm sure if you google Whale on beach in the UK or something like it there's a lot more info on it. Suffice to say its taken three days to try and remove the whale with as much dignity as this kind of operation can afford. Nonetheless, a very sad end to such a noble giant of the deep and a personal privelige to stand next to such a massive warrior of the deep. I've added some pics, there are many others for those with strong stomachs! I'm the one in the orange jacket and green hat Cheers
  9. After 8.5 years I sold my Vmax with the idea of buying a Venture. I came close to jumping on a few first gens and also a few second gens. Had a 99 all picked out but when I made the call they had sold it... guy emailed me after and said he had a 08 with 1100 miles on it. Checked the warranty date and held my breath for pics. Made the deposit that night. 10 days and the hole in my shop will be filled. She won't be as quick but I can always borrow my old max if I wanna go fast. I am anxious to see how the comfy people live. Thanks for all the ideas the forums have planted in the last few weeks...my wallet hates you all! Frank
  10. This year July has 5 fridays ,5 saturdays and 5 Sundays. This apparently happens once every 823 years. This is called money bags. So send this on and money will arrive in 5 days. Based on chinese feng shui the one who does not pass this on will have money troubles for the rest of the year...
  11. I'm looking for options to add heating elements inside my 2nd gen bars so I can keep my existing Kury grips. For those cold weather riders that have them, what did you go with? BTW, they don't need to work on days like today where the temp is -17...-45 wind chill in ND!
  12. woke up at about 3:30 having a small seizure. The wife gets me up at 7:30 to take my meds. Go to make some coffee and the coffee pot is broke (wont turn on) What's next. I hate days like this. George C.
  13. WE HAD 2 GREAT DAYS FOR RIDING. SO A GROUP OF OUR TULSA TOURING RIDERS "RIDING ON TULSA TIME" GOT OUT AND ENJOYED. HERE IS HOW IT WENT http://www.photoshow.com/watch/Bx3gE8Ix PHILL
  14. Getting new shoes on the RSV tomorrow, and the "2011 Tour" is really shaping up to be a good one! Departing the ATL on: ~ Feb 25 - Palm Beach FL - 6 days ~ March 5 - Daytona Bike Week - 7 days ~ May 26 - Washington DC (Rolling Thunder) - 5 days ~ June 10 - Dayton OH - 4 days ~ June 23 - White Sulpher Springs, WVA - 5 days ~ Sept 8 - Philly PA (for 9/11 memorial) - 6 days Not sure how many miles that is, but it's more than I've done in a long time in one calendar year, not including the weekly 200 - 300 mile rides we do to the mountains from March through November, and all of the other shorter rides with the PGR and WWR. 2011 is gonna be a great year. It has to be, cause 2010 sucked! So when is the N. GA maintenance day???
  15. Is this do able or am I a brick shy of a full load? Any suggestions would be appreciated. My son completes boot camp in late june. I would like to attend the ceremony. I have limited time off from work. Looking at riding there and back 3 days each way, 800 first day MN to CO, 900 second day CO to Nevada, 500 miles 3rd day Nevada to San Diego. I have done a couple back to back 750 mile days in the past so the length of time on the bike doesn't worry me, more the terrain (desert and mountains) and a strategy if something fails on the bike so far from home. The bike has 80,000 miles on it, and is in good running shape.
  16. The Bruces are heading for Yellowstone this fall via Denver from the UK. I wondered if any of you venturers out there have any tips on route options and things to see going and coming back from Yellowstone and the Tetons. We intend to take two days going (possibly north up to the Bighorns?) and 4 days coming back (via flaming gorge, Dinosaur etc). Also are there things to see around Denver?, we may have a couple of days free at the end of the holiday. We are both geologists so after Grand Canyon, Yellowstone is a must. We’ve got accommodation in the parks but otherwise we will probably book as we go or just before. Thanks for any suggestions.
  17. WAS looking for couple of extra helments and checked out.. leatherup.com .....and found what i was looking for. right now they have many helment on sale. a lot are almost half price. i was able to pick up 2 of the HAWK AP-80's for $70 each free shipping of orders over $90. these are 3/4 helments with a flip up face shield and the drop down dark lens. hadn't seen this in a helment since my days in the Air Force. while checking there are sales on clothing, leathers, jackets. if anyone is in need i would check their site... it may be on sale. good luck.
  18. I lost my BOSE 901's in a house fire in 1980. I still miss those speakers never replaced them or my albums. Watched a Pink Floyd concert video brought back memories of 30 years ago. Those were the days Crosby,Stills,Nash, Neil Young,Bob Dylan,John Prine, Moody Blues, etc.Just thinking nothing else to do %#@ winter.
  19. Today sunset is at 4:10pm (the earliest it ever gets here) tomorrow sunset is at 4:11. Finally the days are getting longer again. (Yes I am ignoring the sunrise times, ON PURPOSE, there still depressing and going the wrong way) Spring is coming. WOO HOO!!!!!
  20. Well in about 12 days I am going to be driving a truck to my home town in Santa Paula California. My Aunt has requested of me to drive her back home with all of her stuff from Hope Mills NC she is going back to take care of my Grandmother who is 83. I will be taking the southern route I20 to I10 so if you see a guy looking like he needs a ride driving a big yellow truck that would be me.My cell is 9196735095 if you are on the way maybe we can get together give me a call.Sorry I cant take any detours as money is tight for her but if you are on the way and get in touch with me soon enough we might be able to get together for a soda or lunch. I will post on this thread when exactly I will be leaving I plan on doing the drive in 3 to 4 days as long as my Aunt can stand being on the road that long each day. Jeff
  21. Is anyone interested in getting a steering head bearing wrench. These will work on 1st & 2nd Gen's. It allows you to set pre-load on bearings per service manual specs. PDF of procedure to set pre-load is attached below for 1st & 2nd gens. The MKI manual did not list this procedure, but it is identical to the MKII procedure. I sold out of the last order I had for these this summer and have had a few requests for some more. Trying to get a feel for how many to order. PM me or post to this thread if interested. Here is a link to previous posts on these. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=45268 I sold about a 150 of them and everyone seemed satisfied with them. Yamaha version is around $80. If my price is the same as it was they will be $23 including US shipping. Canada will be $24. I would suggest any Canadians pay for priority shipping if they wanted them fast. I had some that took 3 weeks to get delivered to Canada. I sent one to Guam and it got there in 7 days. If you would like to pay at this time, I would appreciate it, have not been back to work for long, so it would help. I will order them in a few days, and ship as soon as I get them. paypal is gary@dinges.com If you don't have a paypal account, let me know and I will send mailing address. 22. Is there anyone in Athelstane, WI that can look at a 99 Venture for me? The fellow selling it seems to have issues getting pics uploaded, plus there is no substitute for someone to actually get there and have a look. We have a few days until the fellow gets back in town for Christmas, so theres no rush. Brian
  23. So it was about 65 degrees today and work midnight shift tonight...so that means I was up and around during the day...Had to make a decision...go for a ride or spend a couple of hours washing and waxing it up for winter storage...I decided to go for the wash and wax since I didn't know how many more days like today I'd have...of course when I was done I sure wished I had time to go for a ride...now I don't know if I made the right decision! But she DOES look pretty now!
