  1. Sorry KiteSquid: You need to write Yamaha and tell them.....look, that clutch whine cost me a windshield!! I could not stand it any longer.......that skyscraper windshield had to go......I cut it down last night, I am just at six foot......ended up taking a full 4.5 inches off it. I certainly was not going to wait on Clearview, call them.....and wait another two months....it had to go!! All I have to do is finish the edges nicely......going to wait a day or so...make sure this is exactly where I want it. I cut mine off on the bike.....taped the whole shield.........lined it off.....cut it........laid towels all over the bike...blew the rest of the sawdust off with the air compressor. The result: I love it so far......have not put it on the interstate yet..but up to 65/70 close to my house.......just a steady airflow....no more buffeting. And I can see the doggies through the morning fog now!! Kit
  2. The biker...kinda long, but read it all please!!! I saw you, hug your purse closer to you in the grocery store line. But, you didn't see me, put an extra $10.00 in the collection plate last Sunday. I saw you, pull your child closer when we passed each other on the sidewalk. But, you didn't see me, playing Santa at the local mall. I saw you, change your mind about going into the restaurant. But, you didn't see me, attending a meeting to raise more money for the hurricane relief. I saw you, roll up your window and shake your head when I drove by. But, you didn't see me, driving behind you when you flicked your cigarette butt out the car window. I saw you, frown at me when I smiled at your children. But, you didn't see me, when I took time off from work to run toys to the homeless. I saw you, stare at my long hair. But, you didn't see me, and my friends cut ten inches off for Locks of Love. I saw you, roll your eyes at our leather coats and gloves. But, you didn't see me, and my brothers donate our old coats and gloves to those that had none. I saw you, look in fright at my tattoos. But, you didn't see me, cry as my children where born and have their name written over and in my heart. I saw you, change lanes while rushing off to go somewhere. But, you didn't see me, going home to be with my family. I saw you, complain about how loud and noisy our bikes can be. But, you didn't see me, when you were changing the CD and drifted into my lane. I saw you, yelling at your kids in the car. But, you didn't see me, pat my child's hands, knowing he was safe behind me. I saw you, reading the newspaper or map as you drove down the road. But, you didn't see me, squeeze my wife's leg when she told me to take the next turn. I saw you, race down the road in the rain. But, you didn't see me, get soaked to the skin so my son could have the car to go on his date. I saw you, run the yellow light just to save a few minutes of time. But, you didn't see me, trying to turn right. I saw you, cut me off because you needed to be in the lane I was in. But, you didn't see me, leave the road. I saw you, waiting impatiently for my friends to pass. But, you didn't see me. I wasn't there. I saw you, go home to your family. But, you didn't see me. Because, I died that day you cut me off. I was just a biker. A person with friends and a family. But, you didn't see me. Repost this around in hopes that people will understand the biker community . If you dont repost this, It sucks to be you. I hope you never lose someone that rides.
  3. I just installed mudflaps from Timberwolf Leather front and rear and they look great. One area of concern/hassle was lining up that rear mud flap with a trailer hitch and getting the hole marked off properly in the mud flap to cut out for the hitch opening. So, just in case any other second gen owners decide to mount a mud flap from Timberwolf and have the Venture dad hitch mounted on the bike, let me know and I will mail you a full size template you can use to transfer the opening dimensions to the flap so it can be cut out with a minimal of hassle. I used a scroll saw to cut my hole out.....ok, no snickering......... Once I finish the bike, ill post pics of the whole thing. www.timberwolfleather.com
  4. just got back from a great ride on my new v-star 1300.(long way to walmart for oil).lol. just me the bike and the wind.what a great ride it was.got back did first oil and filter change.this is one fine bike. yamaha did well.trying to pick it apart. so far the only two things i have to complain about is lowspeed transmission noise, and wind buffeting due to not having lowers on the windshield.it is the smoothest bike i have ever rode and has zero vibration at any speed,(rare for a v-twin).got 44mpg on first tank and 55 mpg on the second tank.i am making polished stainless lowers and have cut 4" off the windshield so i can now look over it.it has plenty of room and is a good size bike, yet light weight and very agile.thanks to dragon rider for influencing my final decision to buy it.the chroming has begun.
  5. Just came in from working on trailer.I got all the diamond plate panels cut and fitted to the trailer.Got the door frame cut down and resized, the door has two sheets of diamond plate back to back so when the door is opened it will still look finished.I am using two handle and locks that match the trike on the door.Notice the cooler rack that is some alum.grating I picked up at the salvage yard while I was buying the diamond plate.I am also installing a large brake light above the door.Well got to go and clean up the mess in the garage.Jerry M

    Bushtec trailer?

take a look at this - 83 with what looks to be a bushtec trailer - might be worth purchasing the bike to get the trailer! may need to cut and paste the address: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-Venture-XVZ1200-with-custom-trailer_W0QQitemZ320161669500QQihZ011QQcategoryZ6718QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  8. I love my Venture......everything but the high windshield. I am looking for advice from anyone who has cut their windshield down, and the results that are obtained. The windshield is simply too high in my opinion, and although I do not ride in the rain, I do get caught in the rain until I can find a bridge or store or whatever and get out of it, and rain on that windshield is bad news, it is called instant danger. It is too tall to look over it, so you have to look to one side. Also it seems to block the airflow and in the summer in South Carolina, 99 degrees up to 105 degrees, it is hot behind that windshield, let me tell you. I have already decided to cut it down, but was hoping for advice from someone who has done this and knows the result. How does it effect helmet buffeting, what happens when the big semi goes by, all that stuff, I already know as high as it poses a life threatening situation if one is caught in the rain and tries to get somewhere......so the windshield has got to go down some. So anyone been through this? Is it the wrong thing to do? Does it unbalance the front end? Just might be the folks who designed it like this did so for a reason? Kit
  9. My bad - I just found Newman's post - sorry for the repeat.... I have an appointment on Thursday at a local plastics shop to get my shield cut down. I have to do it - I can't stand looking through it in the rain or when there are lots of bugs on the shield. I am a little nervous about how far to cut it down - I have to go low enough to look over it so probably about 4 inches from the top. My fear is that may be too much and then I would be disappointed. I don't want to end up looking at the edge though, got to look over it. I am curious if you've done this and how it went. How much did you cut off and how did it affect the air flow? Do you get more buffeting, how about your passenger? Do you regret cutting it. I read some of the threads about the Clearview's as a replacement and may go that way but not yet... What about the shape? Did you end up with the same shape as stock or did you flatten the curve a bit? I'd love to hear your stories - I found an article online about how to do it myself but power tools and I are a bad mix, usually resulting in a poor finished product and multiple sutures for me ;-) Andrew
  10. yeeeeeeehhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! I cut my stock windshield down 3 inches and my mileage went up from an average of 40 to an average of 43.5 MPG...a benefit I was even thinking about : ) this is on the same identical ride to and from work I make everyday...same conditions, same speeds...I feel a little bit of a disturbance high on my head but it is actually helping me keep cooler, and I feel much less wind pushing me where I don't want to be or holding me where I don't want to be...I still look through the top inch or so of the windshield but I can now wipe the fog off when I need to or sit up in the saddle and see over it...I hesitated for a long time doing this but I am sure am glad I made that cut...
  11. New twist on how to replace the Stator with out pinching your pinkies. I had thought of trying this a long time ago and when the stator went out on me on the way home from FL, I thought what better time. I took 3 long bolts that came from a water pump, Cut off the heads and rounding the cut off end leaving 6.4CM of stud. Then installed them after removing all the bolts from the case. I was waiting for the pull of the magnet & to my surprise it just slid off. Mind the magnet still has resistance but it is easily overcome. When putting the cover back on, the studs will hold the gasket in place and eliminate the heavy pull of the flywheel there for allowing you time to get the shifter shaft through the case with out a hitch. 12. Looking for advice on a small cut on my Dunlop Elite II D491 front sidewall. New set of tires last year, only about 2500 miles on them. Just noticed small cut on the sidewall. Doesn't look very deep at all, almost like it was just shaved back...I can see a white color underneath....but doesn't appear to be cut into that. Trying to decide if I should replace it before a 2000 mile trip. It really doesn't seem bad at all, but then again if I'm laying across the highway somewhere I'm gonna be wondering why I didn't just spend the $200 to get it replaced! Any advice or experience with this kind of cut?
  13. Does anyone have an easy way or some helpful info regarding the installation of headsets without having to cut into the helmet ?? I have a full face CIRUS helmet
  14. To all ... beware of this company. This past Christmas I ordered a pair of Leather Motorcycle Jeans for my wife. I guessed at the size, and was wrong. So I contacted Open Road Leather and Accessories, told them about the problem, and they gave me an RMA number. I returned them post haste to exchange for another size and model that had a more generous boot cut. I called him after a week because I had not heard anything from him. He did receive the pants bsck and was prepared to make an exchange for me. I gave him my information (there was a difference in the price of the pants) and I assumed the deal was done..right? Three days later he calls me, and now all of a sudden the pants have a "leg cut off"??? And that the factory won't accept them back - and I am out 115.00 bucks. The pants basically came out of the box and back in. There was nothing wrong with them when I sent them back. I can't believe this.. He wouldn't do anything for me? I am told the pants are coming back to me. I will be interested to see the box they are in and if it was slashed open in shipping. In any case - I am done fuming. There is no honor in business anymore. Frustrated.. Stu
  15. Here are some photo's of how I rigged up a set of J & M headsets to my shorty helmet . I use .90 kydex which I cut with my bandsaw to a width that fits between the yoke of my helmet straps and long enough for fit to squeeze between the helmet liner and the outer hard shell . On the mike side , I cut another peice of kydex and used jiffy rivets to secure to the part that holds the left speaker . Kydex can be molded with heat on which I did so the mike can extend without interfering with helmet straps . A common hair dryer will work , heatgun is better . The J & M headset came with 3 circular peices of sticky hooked side velcro . I used 2 to secure the speakers and cut the 3rd peice to fit within the clamp portion that secures the mike from vibration , being the kydex does not have a rim such as the edge of your helmet does . I could have formed the kydex to form arim ,but I was testing this first to see how it performs . I tucked the speaker wires as prescribed in the headset instructions . 16. Denim goes away in mere feet if you go sliding. Jeans just aren't much protection. Competition Accessories and Fast Company make kevlar lined jeans. The Competition Accessories' Sliders jeans are cut somwhat baggy. Not really a traditional jeans cut. http://www.competitionaccessories.com/category.cfm?Category=2021 Fast Company make Draggin Jeans. These have a more traditional jeans cut but seem to run a little small. http://www.dragginjeans.com/Jeans.htm Fast Company also make Draggin' Shirts. These are woven mesh long sleeved kevlar shirts. They have velcro at the wrists to allow a snug fit when adjusted. http://www.dragginjeans.com/Accessories.htm
