  1. Don. When you put your Flanders bars on did you have to swap out the throttle cables AND the hydraulic hoses? And where did you get these items? My local dealer does not have any extra length cables for the Venture. But then they have a tendency to stick with just a couple of suppliers. Thanks
  2. Hi all I am safe and sound at home. Trip was great. Got to meet a couple others at the show. Bike is parked in the back of the house on the porch. Ran great the whole time. I will post up a couple ending pictures later. Mama says that since there is another Brown Sugar that Mocha kinda fits this one. She says it is purrrtttyyy. A bit of post trip maintenance and it will be ready for more. J. B.
  3. Hi everyone. I am in Ft. Worth bedded down for the night. The bike has run great both days. Been getting 43mpg today while running 80-85. No leaks, no squeaks, and just a rattle or two. The old girl really runs well. I do see a bit of dampness on the outside of the right carbs. Been there a while. Also, Todd the tick I heard has to be an errant spark at idle. I can correlate the erratic idle to the tick. The Corbin seat and backrest were worth the extra trouble. I believe BlackJack was right. The other bike was just a small stop on the way to getting the bike that was really calling me. See some of you tomorrow at the show. And see the South Texas gang when I get home. I want to plan a meet and eat someplace between all of us in a couple weeks. Notice the two somewhat cold but excellent looking 1st Gens. Wonder who they belong to? J. B.
  4. Hey guys I am going to take on a few bikes this winter to paint and figured I would let you guys know first. Any member that wants some paintwork done will get 20%off my regular prices. Let me know as I am getting my schedule together for the next couple months. You can check out some examples of my work at www.bigheadguitars.com or at www.myspace.com/bigheadguitars or you can check some stuff out in my gallery as well. Here are a couple things I just finished up. One was a restoration job and the others were complet builds, but will give you a good idea of what I can do, check them out. Let me know and I will talk to you soon, Paul
  5. Just got in an hour ago. We spent the night in Misissippi. Did a total of 857 miles. It was a great trip and I am glad that Lewis set it up and we decided to go. There were 12 bikes if I counted right and my wife rode 2 up with me. We learned a lot about the place and found out the donation that we make every month, for the last couple of years, goes to a great cause. It makes me want to do more. Will post some pics shortly. It was also great to see old friends and make new ones. Thanks again Lewis for setting this up and for caring.
  6. That Time a year again and our local SCRC chapter 270, got together for a Halloween Party. Just so happnes that many of us Venture Riders are SCRC members as well. Anyway I we had a great time and thought I would post a couple of pictures of the evening. If anyone is ever been afraid of the tooth fairy, you have every right to be. PS. I was laughing so hard. I missed a good photo of the tooth fairy falling on his A$$, but he did not spill his beer. 7. anyone seen or heard from "GIGA-WHISKEY", in the past couple of weeks? i don't recall seeing any posts or replies. just jt
  8. I posted this info once before but it's been lost since the sites crash so will put it up once again. Hopefully others can benefit from this idea. Ok we all know how flimsy the front crash bars are, especially if you've added foot pegs. I made up a set of supports to my bike to add some rigidity to them. There's a couple of advantages to adding these supports. One is no flexing the lower cowlings thus reducing chances of cracking them as some have posted. Another is in the event of either crashing or dropping the bike the bars won't fold back and cause more damage. What I did was to purchase a pair of 1" chromed clamps, cut two strips of 10 gauge (1/8") flat stock 1" wide x 5 1/2" long, and bought 4 stainless steel button head bolts with nylon lock nuts. I used three piece clamps but other types can be used as well. Stainless steel can be subistuted with chromed or plain steel as well. Next was mounting the each clamp to the front bars, adding the strip steel after drilling holes on each end. Then positioning the other end of the strip steel on top of the floorboards b mounting bracket. Locate the end of the hole where you can add the other bolt. Drill a hole thou the floorboard bracket and finish the install. On the bolt that goes thru the floorboard bracket I put the button head on top. There's only a little room there thus that's why I used button head bolts ove hex head types. You'll also find it easier to drill the holes after taking off the bracket too and it also gives you more working room getting the bolt there in place. Here's a couple of pics. I'll add a couple more later with more detail. Larry
  9. Yesterday I had reason to meet many of the Patriot Gurd Riders and they came through like the true champions they are .It was so good of my fellow riders to show up in such force in the middle of the week that it blew me away. For those of you who did not know yesterday I had the honor of meeting many of the PGR who showed up to escort a close friend and my past Fire Chief and was a veteran of Iwo Jima.I even saw a couple of Ventures in the group. And today there must have been at least 6 or 7 hundred bikes and they are still comming through heading down to South Padre Island for the big rally and saw a couple more in those bikes.Still looking for mine .Just aint found it yet.But as for as the PGR guys I was proud to ride with you and even though it was a sad day and my birthday as well it was a super birthday present to have you there. Thanks Ron P.S.Hip ypu could of at least sent me an e-mail saying happybday Freebird did.
  10. I have some fairly large cracks in my fairing up by the edges of the windshield. I think it is from the previous owner as I didn't make them. Anyway I got a replacement via ebay and will be replacing it in the next couple of days. If there isn't a tech article about it here should I take pics and documents steps? Is there anything in that area of the bike that someone would want pictures of?
  11. I received the following email. "Hey Anybody know of someone losing their leather in Sauk City? A notebook has some addresses from NY and CA. Please contact me @ Sauk Prairie Harley-Davidson. It also has A couple of pins from venture mc, Honorable DC from US Navy Poppies. Thank you Maggie Connor 608-643-3735"
  12. The last time I tried Google, it showed a vacant field where my house is. I don't know if they have updated their maps or now. I just tried Live Earth though and it is showing pictures within the last couple of years. Here is the one of my place. Luckily it was taken while those pond monsters were present. My Place
  13. i think it was father and daughter ride night. i went up to Hagens restaurant for their thursday night bike ride in with my daughter. who shows up but TFD69 in between one of his many rides, showed up with his daughter also. then who rolls in but Chubaka, i mean Chubicheka, great to see you again. then there are a couple of 1st gens that roll in, a gold 85 and a black 83. i gave the father and son the web site and hope to see them on here. there were also a couple of v-maxxes and i was suprised how well we got along and had many things to talk about. great night, great food, hope all got home okay. cheers, Scott
  14. I finally found the reason why a couple of cylinders were idling super rich - the tips of two idle mixture screws were missing, busted off by some previous owner! In looking at the carb exploded diagram it doesn't seem that these screws have a part number and I am guessing that they aren't available from the dealer (I'll check tomorrow morning). Anyone know a source for these little stinkers? Anyone have a couple of old carbs they might like to sell? Feeling a little gloomy right now. zag
  15. Here we go again. We now have a new clutch, new slave, plenty of pull on the handle, no air in the lines, clear return hole, scuffed the metal plates, and still the thing slips. The only thing that isn't new on the thing is the pressure plate. The only positive is that it doesn't seem to slip quite as bad. Now I'm wondering, would it help if I replaced a couple of the (cork) plates with steel ones? Or do I go with an aftermarket clutch spring? As I'm at a complete loss of ideas, how about some more of that advice?
  16. well folks, it has happened to me TWICE, in the past couple of weeks. afternoon sun at my back, in town driving, preparing to make a left turn. i look down the street a couple of blocks, i see a white,"dodge ram dually", coming in the inside lane. headlights are on, chrome bumper is shining like a new nickle. i look a second time, to be sure, and lo and behold! 300 feet in front of the truck, is an all white goldwing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lights on, chrome shining, both blending in with the front of the truck! i guess what i'm trying to say, is that sometimes you really DON'T see the motorcycle, even in bright ,clear daylight!!!!!!!!! you guys be extra careful out there! just jt
  17. I put some footpegs on the crash guards on my 84 but I can't get them into the right angle. They work the way they are but could be more comfortable. Do any of you know where a guy can get some beveled washers so I can shim them to the right angle? Or does anyone know another good way to get them to the right angle? They need to move a good 20* +/- a couple.

  19. Well it looks as if my battery is belly-up. What are the opinions on replacement batteries for the 1st gens? I'd like to go maintenance free if possible, but looking for the bang-for-the-buck factor. Don't want to throw a wad of cash out, but will spend a bit more for a better battery. Also, does anyone have a good way to do a load test on a battery to make sure if it is the problem or not? I could hook up a 12 volt load to it, but I have no idea how long it should last. The battery reads 13 volts after a couple of nights on the battery minder jr, but won't crank the starter more than a couple of revs before the relays chatter. Fluid levels are good, battery light is off. I ran a new cable I made out of heavy guage aircraft electrical wire to the starter. I've looked at the archives, but I think many good battery threads, must have been lost back in the crash. The dang electrical problems ended my season early, and I want this thing running well before spring. Any other ideas will be appreciated.
