  1. Just Bored and think to replace Antifreeze in Venture Cooling System, and get ready for nice weather rides. I Got one of Amsoil Antifreeze https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/ant.aspx , and they recommend to mix with Water in rate of 40, 50 or 60 % depend on region. Well Chicago have some arctic temperatures during winter, but over summer could be extremely hot too. So What is your experience with Coolant / Proportions. Should I Wait until Spring and use higher water grade. or just mix as directed on bottle? Little confused. this is my first time to change coolant fluid on Venture. I Know I'm never change coolant in my cars, and they works. What is your Recommendation. Thanks
  2. This past spring I rode my 89 VR to ST. Louis and back, while out ther had an issue with coolant leaking overnight. Attributed to different metal types cooling at different rates. Temps here have been pretty cold, but warmed up some today. So when I was in the garage today there it was again that puddle of coolant!!!! , without even having the engine hot!!!??? I rode that thing all summer with no problems. Help!!!!!!!
  3. My old blue '84 has historically had a quirk where the coolant would gradually and mysteriously disappear over time. Also, a green snot like substance would accumulate in the air box. Wisdom here and elsewhere had it that perhaps a head gasket was blown. The bike always ran like a champ so I eventually discounted (ie didn't want to believe ) this theory. I decided since the bike ran so well I'd just put up with topping up the coolant from time to time. My alternate, and preferred theory was that it was a leak in the engine's crankcase breather system that was diverting foamed coolant into the airbox via the vaccum line. Either way. I decided to just put up with it since the bike ran well otherwise. Early this year I began to have rough / uncertain idle and hard starting problems. Otherwise the bike still ran well. I applied SEAFOAM since it had finally become easily available locally. (It was on sale even!) I ran the recommened 1 oz / gal concentration in several tank fulls of gas. The improvement was quick and dramatic. The idle smoothed out and became nice and regular, starts got easier and MAN I had all kinds of power on the highway. I got to love on ramps all over again! That SEAFOAM stuff is good juju to be sure! What I don't really understand is that after the S/F treatments, my coolant stopped disappearing and now the level remains constant for weeks and months at a time. To be fair, I havent logged as many miiles as usual this summer as it has been SO rainy but still, I think its fair to say that the coolant consumption has dropped to nil. I haven't checked the airbox / snot situatioin yet but I expect to find no more snot accumulation in there when I do. Lazy, er happier riding it than dismantling it sorry. I am happy that this problem has gone away but I am puzzled about the connection between S/F in the gas and any improvement in my coolant consumption / snot in airbox problems. Can any one here offer any theories as to how the two are related? Thanks, Brian H. Uxbridge Ont.
  4. OK, I know this is a stupid question, but is there any trick to refilling the radiator on a 2005 Tour Deluxe? Not being mechanically inclined (and perhaps none too bright), I pulled the water pump cover to replace it with a chrome one without "Yamaha" stamped on it. Of course (being the water pump cover) coolant drained out onto the ground. I am sure I lost all of it. First, is there anything special about the Royal Star coolant? Will just Prestone from WalMart (pre-mixed at 50/50) do? Secondly, is there a tech article on this site detailing how to refill my coolant system? I REALLY would appreciate any help anyone could give. Thanks in advance.
  5. Alright, so I finally got the front cylinder head off, heli-coiled, and back on (Thanks to Freebird and Rick Butler for putting up with my phone calls. ) Got it all buttoned back up on Saturday, and got it out on the road. Everything seemed great.. until I stopped at the store and heard something bubbling from the right fairing.... I was boiling coolant in the resivoir. the bottle looked full and was visibly wiggling from the boiling. went into the store and came back out to find that the bottle was empty but still pretty darn hot. couldn't see anywhere that it boiled a hole in the bottle, but the cap was cracked. Couldn't see where it had leaked out onto the ground either, but it had just rained and the concrete was soaked already. while riding the temp gauge didn't move. Just stayed buried at the bottom, which I remember thinking was odd since after that short distance it should at least have moved up some.. So now I need some advice from ya'll... If this was a car I'd start looking at the thermostat.. since I drained the radiator and re-filled it, I'm wondering if I washed something into it and stuck the stupid thing.. or maybe I didn't put enough coolant into it?? How much should be in an '86 VR? And does anyone have a coolant bottle and cap that I can buy from them? Thanks in advance! BTW, in case anyone was wondering, Yes, you CAN remove the front cylinder head without removing the engine... but for the pain in the butt that it is, I'm wondering if it woulda been easier to pull the engine.
  6. I don't know if this is a "known issue" or not but thought it was worth mentioning. I justy picked up my '07 RSV (450 miles) from the Yamaha service department. I noticed a coolant drip from between the cylinders and brought 'er in. One of the heads needed to be re-torqued. As it was it was only a minor inconvenience but could have been worse if undiscovered or it got worse when I was away from home. Just thought I'd see if this had ever been an issue with anyone else. Randy in PA
  7. Hello to all, was wondering if anyone has done a coolant change on their second gen and if so how involved is the job. 20,000 on mine. Thanks John
  8. Just a quick question, first some info... I know how everyone likes it. I changed some gaskets on my 89 VR including the breather assembly which meant draining some coolant! Finished the job,no leaks oil or coolant, Put everything back together added coolant per owners manual topped off overflow tank to full, took for a test ride and every things ok, except now my temp gauge isn't moving and I cant remember what temp it ran before repairs! I know its pumping coolant you can see it when radiator cap is off. I drove it a couple of miles during the test ride, that should have been far enough to get my gauge to move. Could my thermostat be stuck open? I'm totally confused, I've been wrenching on that thing most of the winter and I'm ready to ride, just don't want to hurt her now!! Where should my needle read at normal riding temp. Thanks everyone, and safe riding to all.
  9. This was a project that I was going to do in the winter but it was so cold most of the winter I didn't feel like it. Today after work I fired up the wood stove in the garage and started in. I finished changing the coolant, the spark plugs. and flushed the brake fluid in both the front and rear. I took the coolant reservoir off and cleaned it all out also. The coolant was really in pretty good shape but thought it was time after 38,000 miles. I actually enjoy working on the bike now and can take the time and not be rushed as when I was a kid. It was not a bad job at all for those that may be wanting to but are hesitant because of never doing it before. I am ready for the riding season to be here. Take care.
  10. I purchased a Baron's waterpump cover that has the V4 emblem on it. I was wondering what to expect when I pull the cover off. Mainly I'm worried about coolant loss. Will it all come pouring out? If so is it okay to let it pour out, and then just add some more? Thanks.
  11. Does it matter what type or brand of coolant I use in my RSTD. A friend of mine tells me to use the honda coolant because it will not damage the water pump (Contains low or no silicate). Owners manual just calls for regular 50/50 coolant. What are you folks using ?? Thanks: Will
  12. Over the Christmas break I will be starting up the wood stove in the garage and changing the coolant in my 2nd gen. Venture. I have not done this service before. I guess I will follow the service manuals guide lines. Is there anything to watch out for or should do or not do? I will also change the plugs which I have done before. I am close to 40,000 miles on the bike. I did the splines this past summer when I changed the rear tire. Any in put?
  13. my knowledge of the mechanic's of motorcycle's can fit on my thumb. i have a 2007 venture with 250 miles on it the bike wouldn't turn over the battery i thing needs charging it seems to be straining. i believe the battery is under the seat? how do i get to it also there's a coolant reservior that is low because i took off the two side panels, i can ride like hell but the rest ? help!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks to anyone who can help
  14. Hi, Is there a drain plug for the coolant somewhere on these engines? Or does one have to improvise like on a VW where they tell you to pull a rad hose to act as the drain? Also, I think I need a new O ring for the coolant by pass valve as I have a leak there now. Any suggestions for a non yama solution? Thanks, Brian H.
  15. 91 Venture Royale, 43,000 miles. When I ride all day in hot weather, the next morning I have a little bit of coolant on my right exhaust just below the water pump. It burns off when I start up and the loss is negligable. Still It bugs me. I thought it was the o-rings in the plastic transfer pipe between the water pump and the thermostat housing. But, today I got down and looked and there is a little hole in the bottom of the water pump and there is a stain, as though coolant has leaked out the hole from time to time. This is the only place that looks like anything has leaked in the past. Anyone have a similar experience? Do I need to fix it?
  16. I have got a leak on the left side of the tube that you drain the coolant. I think goes in to the thermostatic valve is that an o ring I cane replace or is it more . Dale
  17. I have a 1988 Venture Royale. I'm wanting to change and flush engine coolant. What is the recommendation for coolant? I have access to Toyota Long Life type (dark red colour).....would this be suitable/ acceptable?? As i understand it.....it should be mixed 50/50...is that correct? Thanks. rez
  18. Have removed the coolant bypass valve by removing the phillips screw on the side. When I pulled the valve out, I dropped it so I'm not sure if I lost any parts. There is a small spring for the a/m screw. Any other loose parts that might be lying on the driveway somewhere that I need to look for? This is from an '87. Could use a quick response. Thanks
  19. If there was no coolant in the scoot?
