  1. I hate posting this but I just had a pretty major electrical fire in my sidecar. While going to breakfast my son put a dime in the electrical outlet on the dash of my escort. By the time I was able to pull over there was smoke coming from under the dash and then the electrical connector to the bike started smoking and melting, followed by smoke comining out from under the seat. Luckly everybody was able to get out with much more than a red spot on a finger. I unplugged the sidecar but it doesn't appear that the sidecar was wired very well when it was put together for me as they didn't use the right sized fuses and it appears to have fried my dash panel on my Royal Star Venture. I cannot get the brake lights or turn signals to work but all the running lights are working. The connector is fried, wires melted enough to break and the wires under the seat are melted pretty bad. I tied calling SideStrider to see if they could help but I havent gotten a call back yet. I'm not sure about getting home or what to do. Any help in the Universal City area of Los Angeles would be greatly appreciated. Ron McDonald Normaly from Lakewood Washington but currently stranded in Los Angeles
  2. Hello all, I have a 2000 MM Venture with various electrical issues and looking for some advice. I have a repair manual but can't find the answers in the book. 1) rear left turn signal- Do you know where the signal bulb socket ties in with the first connector? Is it behind the license plate? Assume it doesnt connect all the way to the fuse box. 2) Right front turn signal- Do you know where the signal bulb socket ties in with the first connector? Same issue as above. 3) Riding lights- Where should those tie into the electrical system? When should they be on? Appreciate your help? Bob
  3. In case anyone hasn't picked up on it. The 5 pin connector for the headsets on the RSV uses the same plug as the old 5 pin DIN PC mouse connector. That is the larger mouse plug used on the old AT computers. So it wouldn't be to hard to fabricate a Y adapter if someone really needed to. Cut off an old mouse cord for the male end and use a DIN to ps2 patch cord for the female end. Mike
  4. Last year, I disconnected my OEM Horn and a friend installed a 2 Trumpet Air Horn. I thought when it was done by my friend, there were 2 OEM Electric Horns. One on the right side by Floor Board, and one in the left front cowling. I took off the Air Horn and replaced it with a louder 118 db electric horn from RIVCO. I found a connector that looked like a horn connector in the left cowling, but no bracket or OEM horn. So, on 2008 RSV, is there 1 or 2 OEM Horns?
  5. Not planning on spending $600+ on the cd changer from Yamaha but was thinking that rather than mounting my ipod on the handlebars and clutter things up, couldn't I put the iPod in the side luggage (where it will stay dry) and connect the audio out from the iPod to the pin connector for the cd ? Anyone try this ? I have a 2009 RSV. In the left side luggage is a cable which I believe is for a cd connection.
  6. Does anyone have a bad Reserve Lighting Unit laying around for an 88 Venture? It is my understanding that the MKI and MKII are different. At least the connector is different. My request is 2 fold. 1. I want to see what is inside of that box to see if it can be modified to suit my needs before I destroy my good one. 2. If it can not be disassembled and modified then I can use the wire harness and connector to make my own unit that will do what I need. Next question; Has anyone identified the connector on the RLU so I could just buy that. I just hate to butcher a perfectly good RLU if I don't have to.
  7. I was wondering if people could post pics of how they mounted their GPS's. I have the RAM-Mount set up that uses a u-bolt on the handlebar. I have not installed it yet and was curious as to what others had done to see if anyone had a better set up than what I am planning on doing. My other question is where to get power. My original plan was to power it from the connector near the battery. But I seem to remember there being another connector under the cover where the key is. I am at work and the bike is home so I can't look. I have to take that cover off to remove the tank etc. But if there is a plug there it would make things easier. One more question is for people with the Zumo 660. On my last bike I ended up clipping all the data wires and just using the power on the cradle. This simplifies the wiring harness. Not sure what the usb is for in any case. Has anyone else done this? I use an iPod for music so don't necessarily need all the bells and whistles the zumo has.
  8. My 87 RSV project is close to winding down, as you all know it'll never end but it looks acceptable and run's good so I'm happy. I got the Bike kinda cheap but it was missing allot of the electronics and never owning a Touring bike before I figured who Needs a radio, it's a bike? Well I need help with the radio actually the female 8 pin main audio connector in the left side Faring. The white plastic female 8 pin connector on the bikes Wiring harness was cut off. I have the connector but I don't know if there is a way to reuse it or if I can get one from some where that will plug into the male 8 pin connector from the Tuner/Amp unit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I still have lots of questions about this electronics that I find I just can't live with out but one thing at a time. Thanks Pete (I reposted this here in hope that a answer will come from a electronic form)

  10. Just installed the light bar with the passing lights on my RSTD. What a PIA. The directions wern't real good but now that I have done it, it would be easier the second time around. Feeding one of the wires up through the special bolt was easy but getting the second one with the bullet connector on it was imposible. I tried evey way imanginable and there was just no way. After 20 minutes with it I cut the connector off and put a new one on after I fed the wire up through. Also the directions are not clear on what connector goes where. It's kind of trial and error. Also the screws and hex head bolts are not easy to get at but I was able to get through it. I really looks nice now. I did get it done and will post a picture here later.
  11. Is anyone having any trouble with their Zumo motorcycle cradle. Last summer I started having trouble with a lot of noise during phone calls. Mainly the noise was with the party on the other end of the call. They were picking up a lot of noise as I would accelerate. By accident I found that if I wiggled the mic cable at the cradle connector I could influence the noise. Make it better or worse. The problem continued after I changed bikes. I checked the mic jack and it seemed fine. So I concluded that the connector in the cradle must be bad. I called Garmin with a warranty claim and they sent me a new cradle. I installed it today and everything is fine again. I researched this a bit on www.zumoforums.com and I found several complaints about the connectors on the cradle. Mainly dealing with the 3.5mm audio out connection. Garmin was good about replacing the cradle. I just worry now about what happens after warranty. This may be a weak design point. Dennis
  12. I'm replacing my stock CB/Radio antenna on the VR with a Firestik . I looked at the new antenna and of course it has a male end. So I want to replace with all new from the antenna to the CB. I see that I will need different parts to hook this up. One end of the old coax has the plug in type of connector (like on a car radio antenna wire)at the CB and the other end has the old mounting unit built right on it. Where can I get coax with the plug on one end and the screw on connector at the other end by the new mounting stud? OR ----- can I cut the old original mounting end off and put on a new screw on connector for the mounting stud end for the new antenna?

    TCI

Not getting any readings at the TCI connectors. Following the six pin connector back to the connector right below the left side of the seat, I get similar results there also. Is there a connector other than that one. I'm pretty sure I have a bad connection, I just not sure where to look. Help aaaerstowr
  14. This morning when I left on the bike to go to work.I noticed that my low beam didn’t work. So I used my high beams. This afternoon when I came from work. I checked the light bulb .but I can’t see anything wrong with it….I cleaned the connector with contact spray .without any luck. Can it be the light bulb or something else?
  15. So I get the new bike home Tuesday night. The wife and I take about a 5 mile ride to check it out. Pull up in the driveway, and notice one of the rear speakers aren't working.. BRAND NEW.. come on now... SO, I call the dealer the next morning, and of course, depends on how busy we are if we can get to it right away or not... UM... I just spent how much for what?!?!?! Got home last night and decided I'll look at it myself.. Pull the seats, and yep, sure enough, plain as day is a a connector with nothing plugged into it... I start looking around for the other end. It's up under the trunk, with the wire running between the trunk and the trunk bracket. You could tell exactly what happened... They put it together, couldn't get the connector pushed back through from between the bracket and the trunk, so said WTF.. it's only one speaker.. I ended up pulling the speaker pod loose, and it gave enough clearance to force the connector through... I also noticed that one of the connectors for one of the antennas wasn't routed correctly and placed in the holder for it.. and another wire laying loose that should have been run through a wire keeper.. SO.. I sorted it all out, put it all back together, and now I got sound all the way around, and no worries of wires rubbing from being in wrong places.. It sure makes me wonder what other problems I'm going to find from the dealer assembly though... If they do something like this with a brand new bike, I'll be damned if I'm going to trust my life to others when you have no ideas if they take shortcuts or not.. At least when I work on it, I know what was done.
  16. Last week I bought a J&M headset from Chrome World.com and it works OK so I was going to buy the bride one except she has a half helmet and mine is a 3/4 helmet. The one I was looking at for her is J&M HS-G45 it says it is compatible with Goldwing but it doesn't mention Yamaha 5 pin connector. Anyone have one of these and your thoughts please and most of all is it compatible with the RS Venture 2006? Thanks much for the input! Steve
  17. I'm starting the slow process of reassembly (still waiting to finish paint before installing outer cowlings). The inner cowlings are attached and am slowing going through electrical (radio works, CB has issues)... Anyways, I'm curious about a little green connector on the left forward/upper side of the bike. It has two wires with the connectors that are 90 degrees from each other to form a "T" within the connector. What does this connector connect to? Thanks, WHCC
  18. I am near completion on the RSV wiring schematic. I have a number of questions about it that I am unable to check since I do not have A RSV. What I need is someone that can look at a wiring harness on or off of bike and check these. They are listed below. If it would help I could email anyone interested in helping a copy of schematic. I would like to get as many of these questions resolved prior to posting finished version. There may be a prize for most needed answers #1 Rear speakers only show 2 wires, if stereo rear speakers should be 4 Answered by YamaHamer 10/23/09 #2 two of six wires from MCU to front radio remote go thru connector D, why just 2 #3 Is carb heart ground shown correct or do grounds all connect to Carb ground connector. #4 Wire colors into fan noise filter conflict between what connectors indicate & indicated wire color. #5 Rear Aux outlet positive wire color to fuse, Br/R or Br/B, wire has each on opposite ends #6 Is Y/W wire color correct in rear brake switch, incoming cable shows Y/L #7 Color of wire inside handle bar control from Cruise Control Switch to Hazard Switch, not marked on schematic #8 Is Y/B wire correct color in clutch switch, incoming cable shows Y/W Answered by BuddyRich 10/23/09 #9 Is W wire correct color in PTT switch, incoming cable shows W/L #10 PTT circuit problem….Harness connector legend does not show a W or a W/L wire going thru it, PTT circuit is indicated as going thru this connector though. MCU diagram indicates it is W/Y at connector but on other ends, indicates W/L at MCU and at push button it shows being a W, on cable going into push button it is W/L. Only one wire on schematic is W/Y, from MCU to Front Control & this does not indicate going thru D connector #11 Is L/B wire correct color in dimmer switch, incoming cable shows R/Y #12 Wire connector E, can’t locate Br/W terminal, only logical place is in wire from flasher relay to turn signal switch #13 Wire connector D, can’t locate Y/R terminal, only Y/R at 2 places 1st out of cruise control relay, 2nd from flasher relay to turn signal switch. .
  19. I had my 87 apart for over two weeks. There is a green two pin quick connector that has two wires- brown (or chocolate?) and white and black and white. The connector emerges from the wiring harness along the left side just above a point halfway between the radiator and the front left (as you sit on the bike) cylinder (no. 2). The manual indicates this may be part of the turn signal circuit, which is not functioning since I put it back together. I am trying to diagnose my turn signals not working and wonder if I'm missing something. The turn signals are DOA. Thanks You guys!
  20. Does anyone know where to get the same style of connector that comes stock on the RSV. I want to create a small custom patch cable in between the bikes connector (DIN-5) and my headset connector. (also DIN-5) I need both male and female connectors. I want the rubber shrouded style. I'll also take info on a non-rubber connector that will fit "completely" into the stock connectors (both male & female), but I prefer the rubber style. Thanks.
  21. I can't find my connector for a headset anywhere on the bike. the wifes is right under the seat. But mine has gone missing. Where should I look for it?
  22. I am getting ready to relocate my TCI box. I almost have it released from the current convenient location and I would like to put it on top of the airbox. It sounds like some of you have routed the 2 connector cables up the left (?) side if the airbox. Once disconnected from the TCI is there enough slack in the 2 cables that they can be slid up the side without removing that darn box? How did you secure the TCI to the airbox lid? Also, my connector cables were puked on from the old battery right where the wires enter the white plastic connector. Is there a "best way" to clean that stuff off without damaging the wires? Thanks Kevin
  23. I was having trouble getting the E4 code almost all the time. I was fooling around in the back of the unit and noticed that when I wiggled the main connector the unit would reset. After reading several comments on this website about soldering the circuit board due to loose connections I decided to look deeper. I disassembled the unit and removed the circuit boards. Using a magnifing glass I was able to see that the solder joints on the back of the main connector were loose and would move when I applied pressure to the connector. Went to Radio Shack and purchased a 25W soldering iron, solder, and desoldering braid. Fixed it myself and the unit works fine. Small investment for a major fix. Thanks to you all who placed the information on the web.
  24. I am installing a Garmin Street Pilot III on a 2005 RSV. Where is the other end of the drivers 5 pin DIN connector ? Under tank ? under Seat ? or in the fairing ? Thanks Dave N.
  25. A friend of mine called me this evening and asked if I could check the cb's standing wave on his 1994 GoldWing. Can someone give me an idea where the best place to locate the antenna cable and get to a connector?
