  1. Since this 99 RSV in still fairly new to me, I would like to know if this high pitched tinny sound coming from the engine is a common sound of these units or is something out of adjustment within the engine. I hear it most between 50 and 70 MPH. Reminds me of an old Chevy that I had, and had to occasionly adjust the tappets to reduce the clicking sound. Or, is this something not to be concerned about?
  2. It's another. Replaced my front tire the other day, it's now a Maxxis Classic WWW, looks beautiful. However, it seems to be losing a bit of air pressure while sitting. Haven't ridden it more than a few miles since replacing. I did install the Ride-on into the tire. Is it common for a new tire to lose air until, I dunno, everything gets more set? I checked the valve stem, it seems secure and I don't hear any air escaping. thoughts?

    The Death of Common Sense

My parents told me about Mr. Common Sense early in my life and told me I would do well to call on him when making decisions. It seems he was always around in my early years but less and less as time passed by.Today I read his obituary. Please join me in a moment of silence in remembrance. For Common Sense has served us all so well for so many generations. ObituaryCommon SenseToday we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend , Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how oldHe was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, why life isn't always fair, and how, on occasion, maybe it was my fault.Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin, sun lotion or a sticky plaster to a student; but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar can sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by three stepbrothers; I Know my Rights, Someone Else is to Blame, and I'm a Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.Author unknown
  4. After all these years...and I even took courses on Tax preparation... I never knew this... If I was single and my wife was single and we weren't living common law....we'd be getting a refund of just over $4000 between the 2 of us on our 2007 taxes. Since we're married (or even if we were living common law), we're getting a refund of appx $390. The reason is...as I sadly discovered...is because when the federal and provincial tax credits are calculated, it takes into account the spouse's NET income and since both of our net incomes are considerably more than the tax credit amounts, we both get NOTHING for a tax credit. In short, we are being penalized two-fold because we are married. What a freakin rip off!!! And I would bet that the Canada pension will penalize us accordingly. Time to get a DIVORCE!
  5. After months of planning I went to Big Bend this past weekend. It was supposed to be 4 days of riding and sightseeing. The first night we stayed at the Marathon Hotel. Nice place and great courtyard to have a gathering after a ride. We at at the OASIS CAFE down the street. We left the next morning to end up in Terlingua. At about 4 in the afternoon I began to get indigestion. We ate supper at the Starlight Theatre and Cafe. By 4:30 that next morning 2 of us were visited by Montezuma and his revenge!! It was ugly. Spent the night in the bathroom on the john with a trash can in front of me. So weak the next morning that I went straight to Ft. Davis and checked in early. By 10am a third in our group was visited. He made it in by noon. We spent all of Saturday in our rooms and missed the stargazing and all the riding.. On Sunday we left at different times (no sightseeing). I checked out at noon and started home. I planned my trip home to possibly take 2 days. The others started at 9am. I got in at 7pm and almost fell off the bike. Still sick as a dog and will lose tomorrow at work as well. THE ONLY FOOD IN COMMON TO THE 3 THAT GOT SICK WAS THE CHICKEN-FRIED STEAK AT THE OASIS IN MARATHON. The other 4 people were ok. It was worse than simple food poisoning. I drank almost 4 gallons of water between Sat. in the AM and Sunday night. It all went out the wrong way. I won't go into more details. Just want to warn people that the OASIS CAFE is now off limits for me! It is a small hole in the wall place. We all at at the Starlight-different foods and common appetizers. Nothing in common between the 3 there. Enough for now, going to go drink more water and eat a couple pieces of bread. JB
  6. Have any of you heard of, or have tried this oil filter? I couldn't find an application chart, but I'm sure they have the spin-on one for the RSV, as it's very common to Japanese motorcycles. www.motorcycle.com/products/kp-engineerings-reusable-oil-filter-71983.html
  7. I have matching helmets with microphone headsets that came with the VR. However they are getting a little worn and the foam is starting to deteriorate. Is it common to refurbish their innards, and if so who typically does that type of work?

  10. Hello everyone. I just received the JD Powers Quality Survey for my 2007 Venture. Is this a common thing for people to get? If not and any of you want me to add comments to the survey, I'll hold off filling it out until I hear some responses. If this is a common survey that everyone gets, please let me know and I'll fill it out immediately. Thanks.
  11. We had a list before the crash that was lost. I will list the things that I remember, please add the things that I am forgetting. Cracked frames. Early Ventures, '83 models specifically, have been know to develop cracked frames. This occurs just above the area where the center stand attaches. Second Gear. In models from '83 through mid '85 there is a problem with the bikes losing second gear. It does not happen on all bikes but is very common. Usually starts by slipping out of second gear on hard acceleration. Can be repaired by a savvy home mechanic but does require the removal of motor. Expensive fix if you have it done at a dealer. I've seen estimates approaching $2,000.00 Stators. Early models suffered from stator failure due to over heating. Later models incorporated an oil cooling system. Cracked trunks. Very common to find the bottom of the trunks cracked out. Class air suspension controller. E4 errors are common. Caused by bad solders on the circuit board within the controller. Easy fix if you are familiar with using a soldering iron. There is a tech article here to deal with the fix. Front end wobble. Pretty common. Various causes but usually either a slightly cupped front tire or loose steering head bearings. Repacking and proper tightening of the head bearings is highly recommended whether you have experienced the wobble or not. Exhaust collector. Baffles become loose and cause a rattle. There is a tech article on opening up the collector and repairing. There is also an after market system out that does away with the collector.
  12. I have a 06 RSTD, with 500 miles on it. I have noticed the front brakes squeal alot. I thought I might have sand in them, so the last time I cleaned the bike, I sprayed water up into the pads. No soap or cleaners, just water. Still squealing. Is this common, or do I have a problem the dealer needs to look into? BTW, I am having the 600 mile break in service done next week.
