  1. A FEW WEEKS AGO MY 93 STARTED TO BACK FIRE WHEN I ROLL OFF THE GAS ONCE IN A WHILE,SO I WAS THINKING IT MUST HAVE A EXHAUST LEAK SOME WHERE, TODAY I WAS CHECKING IT OUT AND FOUND MY COLLECTOR IS LEAKING FROM THE SMALL HOLES IN THE BOTTOM. SO IF ANYONE OUT THERE HAS ONE I COULD BUY TO REBUILD OR A GOOD USED ONE IM IN NEED OF IT. THANKS!
  2. Hi.Does anyone have a set of OEM mufflers for an 83 VR. I went on a ride today and my right side mufflers broke at the collector flang. If there is a fix, can anyone tell me? Thanks all Ray.
  3. Last week when I was getting onto a busy highway from a side road, at about 7000-8000 rpms or so, I started hearing a horrible howling. When I shifted, it went away, but it came back and then gone again as I went through the gears. It sounds as though its coming from the exhaust. It seems to be come and go depending on the rpms and/or how much of a load I'm putting on the engine. As in, if I'm going down the highway at about 70mph, it is hardly there. But if I start up a hill and I maintain that speed, the howling gets louder. Today I took off both mufflers and went down the road to see if it still made the howl. Sure enough, it does. When it hits the right frequency, I can even hear it over the extremely loud noise coming out of the collector without the mufflers. I took some loose baffles out of the collector a couple years ago that were rattling. After that the exhaust sounded a bit "hollow" but not to loud or annoying. This howl sounds similar but 100 times louder. I left one baffle in there that looked like it was still welded in place quite securely. I can't imagine it could make that kind of noise if that baffle came loose. It sounds as though when the exhaust hits the right frequency, it begins to resonate inside the collector and get louder. After everything cools off enough, I'm gonna try to stick my head and a flashlight under the bike and try to look down the collector and see what it looks like. Anybody else ever have this problem? I've never heard an engine make this kind of sound, so I'm assuming its the exhaust. I have another collector her that I was gonna try, so I could go through the process of elimination, but the mounts have been broken off. Anybody have an extra laying around they might want to sell? Thanks, Bill
  4. 88's collector has the typical rattle that's driving me crazy. I'm looking to buy a spare to modify so I can just do a 1-1 swap in a day. Anyone have one available? Thanks
  5. ok who told Dianne about if she needs help with a new to her bike? she saw a nice 650 woman owned bike here in the classified. and said hey that wold be a nice one. looks like september for her though. still if she gets settlement then she can get some ride time in. i can just see it now. vroommm around the block just to rub it in that i cant ride for now. we also talked about letting my 84 go next spring. get somethin newer and hate to say it dependable. this one just was not taken care of. thank god she found a complete exhaust system one bad right muffler rust trough but thats ok jbweld and it wont show. and mines good so? because she said james relax i want to show you something that shop showed me. i went oh no not any more bad news. she said not realy as we got the parts comming in be here tomorrow. but the old exhaust was welded in places that it should not have been. headers welded to collector front ones ? a shame to as they where not rusted and shiney i think the welded tab can be removed from them. they welded a piece of small steel from header to collector. i will post pics when and if i can. so i guess what im trying to say is they f***ed it up. mufflers are good but rest of it was shot to hell. that explains the backfire while at idle? and the one day it scared a poor woman in the crosswalk. but enough i need to take meds go for a walk then back to my easy chair.
  6. I just got my license plate renewal form in the mail. I decided that I will bite the bullet get the collector plates since they are good forever. No more renewals for this bike ever again. The plates are for my '88 so that covers the 20 year old part. The only drawback is that I can not drive the bike in the month of January, In Wisconsin that will not be an issue. I never had anything worth putting on collector plates before. There are so many people that look at it and will not believe it is 23 years old (manufacture date was in '87), at least not when it is clean right after its biannual bath.
  7. I dont know if the Exhaust collector is my problem or not, what i am haveing trouble with is that the left side exhaust seems to be more resticted than the right, you can hold your hand in front of the exhaust on the mufflers and you can tell that the exhaust is not the same, you can even hear the defference. On the left front exhaust pipe you can see where it has bottem out and flaten the exhaust slitly, not that bad i dont think but not sure. would the exhaust collector baffel being louse and lodged in there cause this, has any one had this problem ?

  10. I have noticed a funny rattleing sound ,that I think may be coming from the exhaust.I have been told that these bikes have a problem with the collector box! Is this true and is there a fix? Thanks Stan
  11. Count to a hundred, my rear, that ain't gonna hack it!!! :soapbox: Apparantly the illegal sumb**** didn't weld my down tube on the rear cylinders right 'cause I still get some hot air coming up:headache: tried just removing the downtube and lost the allan wrench on top off the collector and I couldn't get it out :starz:Had to buy another set of allan wrenches to finish that bit, lost that one on top of the collector too, so had to go buy a magnetic pick up, then, guess what: ...can't get the down tubes out so i'm having to take the whole blasted exhaust loose One of the nuts holding the collector on appears to be stripped too far and it won't come loose ....... :bang head::bang head: and you can't reach it with vise grips!!! I'm gonna kill something.............. maybe i need a drink (is it 12 o'clock yet)......
  12. Hi, I recently developed an afterfire on my 84. Upon further inspection, I have one fair sized crak near the very rear of my collector.. I imagine there may be more.. Time to fix I suppose...How much effort and job to remove this and weld....I think the baffles are okay. Any tip or trick to speed removal or make it easier? Thanks Clay
  13. Just bought a collector for my 84 XVZ12. Looked up the exaust gaskets online for Yamaha origional. $20 each for the headers (4 needed) and $13 each for the mufflers (2 needed). Total $106 total plus tax. Seems a bit much for 6 metal rings. Just wondering if anyone knows of an aftermarket set available anywhere.
  14. Hey I'm going to teat out my old collector from my 84 which cracked at the out pipe and replace it with the good one from my old 83...( glad I kept it). Do i need to replace all the gaskets... Those darn things are expensive.. Rick at buckeye quoted 148.00 for eight of them. Can the old ones be reused? Clay
  15. Like by tomorrow a.m. The shop confirmed I got a loose baffle in my collector. haven't been able to ride it in three weeks and am getting antsy. So please tell me: Aside from the rattle, will I do further damage by riding with it loose? Can You remove a loose baffle without removing the collector? Can you eliminate the collector altogether? They still have it on the lift and if I let them know in the a.m. whether to tackle it, they might actually be able to get me back on the road before the weekend. Thanks a milion!
  16. Just wondering if anyone at Don's MD will want something welded. Someone mentioned plating over an exhaust collector. If there is enough interest, I may drag my MIG along.
  17. Another fantastic member has stepped up and donated a couple of items for auction. These are going to be collectors items if they arent already. These are brand new, 2nd and 3rd printing, never out of the bag. I will be listing each one in its own auction, so if your a comic book collector you might want to add these to your collection. The donor is to remain unknown by request. So "unkown", thank you very very much for helping the Kids at St.Jude Children's Hospital.........
  18. Hi, Got my new to me 1990 Venture 1300 this weekend. I like almost everything about it other than the exhaust. The collector rattles and the mufflers are REAL quiet. You can hear the collector rattle over top of the sound of the exhaust. I saw the threads about gutting the collector and the mufflers. Both projects look beyond my pay grade. I have been looking for some type of aftermarket slip-ons but cant find any. Does anyone know of any good sounding mufflers that will fit? On my last bike, an '86 V-Max, I put on a set of Supertrapps, I would like a sound like that. Thanks for any info, Brian
  19. 20. I finally got around to looking at the '91 and tracking down the left side engine oil leak. I've been thinking about taking it on VWIV, and time was getting short. All sorts of worst case senerios were running thru my brain. The biggest was having to pull the exaust collector just to find out where ithe leak was actually coming from. I also planned on installing a set of MACs that I'd been sitting on since the first group buy. First thing and easiest thing first tho. I went and pulled the middle gear cover. It looked like fresh oil had been leaking out of the bottom drain screw. Not positive, but it could be..?? The gasket didn't come off in one piece so I went ahead and cleaned both surfaces, put on a new gasket, replaced the copper washer, and lo-and behold it stopped leaking....I hope. :fingers crossed The leak was pretty agressive, and the collector smoked like crazy when warmed up. After doing the fix I let it idle for quite a while and so far so good. Not a single drop of oil has hit the pavement under the bike. It hasn't gotten really warm yet, but there's hope...
  21. I think I have the issue that so many have had with the baffles in the collector. When I start it there's a rattle. It's there when I rev and when I down shift but not on a steady throttle. If it's the baffles, can that cause anything other than irritation? If I remove the baffles and put the collector back together will that cause any problems? I would rather not spend the money on anything new if I can avoid it.
  22. is the exhaust collector box absolutely necessary, for a specific reason? can i run dual 2 into 1 exhausts, and still be safe , as far as back drafts, burnt valves, are concerned? i really want to do away with that blasted , rattling box! just jt
  23. I am about to install what I consider a unique exhaust collector on my 88. I is custom built by Mark's Pipes out in Hisperia, Ca (I think anyway). Has anyone known anyone to install this custom after market exhaust collector or perhaps done so themself. This ceramic coated collector elimates the box-type baffled collector and connects them to the exhaust with exhaust the same diameter as the exhaust headers. This collector allows each exhaust header to be directly connected to the exhaust. Should be a great improvement in the air flow. Does anyone have any information pertaining to this product and other modifications that had to be performed, i.e, jetting? Help.
  24. My collector seems to have a leak and everytime I look into getting new mufflers I only find "slip on pipes". Forgive my ignorance...but what exactly is the "slip ons" does that mean it slips over the pipes? Can we purchase a new collector or new pipes from anywhere? That is what seems to be rusted, near the middle to the front of my bike. The back looks great. A couple of you on previous post mentionned "Marks custom exhaust crossover pipes" and the "Marks collector". Are these new? I googled and could not find. Have a web site to refer me to? Thanks for the help!
  25. I had to pull my exhaust and collector to find an oil leak that I have been living with for the last 12/13 thousand miles. It started just before Vogel and my trip, and just after rebuilding the clutch and clutch slave cylinder. It turns out that it is leaking at the slave cylinder oil seal. That's on order. In the meantime, I took the collector to a friends because he has a parts washer. The oil was so cooked on that the cleaner barely touched it, so he said "Let's just put it in the bead blaster, then paint it" I said "You've got a bead blaster? COOL!!!" That was fun, but as I was moving it around I heard a rattle. I've read of this dreaded problem, but hadn't heard the rattle while it was on the bike. It was more than a loose piece that could be fixed by "punching" the bottom to press on the loose part. (Like I've read about in threads here) We decided to cut it open and get the loose piece out, it was a corner piece that had broken loose and was rolling all over the place. One thing lead to another and we ended up "cleaning it's clock"! We pulled out all the perforated metal and what appeared to be heat shield. Most of which was gone anyway. My main question is: Do I need to put some sort of heat shield back in the top of it? Does that extra heat on the bottom of the engine create any issues? Has anybody (I'm sure someone has!) done this to their's? Paul, my friend, wants to eliminate the collector all together and bend some pipe to replace it. I said that's already been done but it's a few hundred dollars! So we decided to leave that to others! Sorry, I haven't taken any pictures yet, but I'm gonna take my camera tomorrow and get some shots. I'll post them here then.
