1. HA HA! COLD IN THE SOUTH ISN'T IT?:rotfl:
2. Brrrr- vrroom! 38 Degrees when I left the house this morning for work. Light overpants, sweatshirt, balaclava, jacket, mittens... Nothing like cold weather riding. It provides all the fun of snowmobiling without the distracting snow-bunnies, hot tubs, cocoa etc.
3. Hello all, I'm back to partake from the "Fountain of Knowledge". My 1996 Royal Star developed a "miss" and would backfire. In doing some checking I found that I have an intermitten spark from cylinder #3. This condition exists when the bike is cold or warm that in my thinking would rule out the coils because from what I have read the coils fail mostly when they get hot. Any suggestions?
4. Thumbs up to the RSV!! I got my "new to me" 99 RSV this summer so this cold weather riding season with it. Had a meeting in Minneapolis this morning so I headed out from my place here in Northern Wisconsin at 5:00am. Temp was 35 degrees. 120 miles to the cities and not cold at all. I wore my Cabela's Dry Plus rain gear bibs from my boat. Not insulated, but windproof so my knees were fine. Probably close to the end of our season. Rain forecast for this weekend and then temps are supposed to drop next week even more... Scott.....
5. I think I might have found my comfort limit for riding in the cold. This morning for the 1 hour ride to work it was 38°F and I got to work before sunrise. Tomorrow morning it is supposed to be in the low 30s or high 20s, I'll give it one more chance, but I will get out my big orange Gortex hunting coat and bibs. Not sure yet what I will use for gloves, If I get much heavier than what I wore today (my fingers were cold and numb) I do not know if it will impair my ability to operate the buttons safely. I know that I can easily dress warm for my feet and body, it is only my hands that seem to be the issue. The bike was not to thrilled with the temps either but I'll start another thread for that. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=527159#post527159 Its a comin!
6. Does anyone ever hear of problems starting their Royal Star in cooler weather? I've had this problem for three years now, and it's now starting again. I've put a new battery on, changed the plugs, air filter, brought it to the stealership, nothing helps. It is fine all summer, but as soon as it gets cold at night, I can't start it in the morning. I was thinking maybe something with the choke, but when it finally does fire up it is revving really high, like the choke is working fine. I hooked a lamp onto the engine all night and that seemed to help, but I'd rather solve the problem. This is my favorite time of year to ride and I hate getting stranded at night, fighting the starter. Any ideas?
7. It's the end of August and usually we're sweating our a$$es off with a 100+ summer heat wave. Woke up this morning to temps in the 50's and rain clouds overhead. Weather man sez it's a cold front out of Alaska and it's going to rain... It's all that damn volcano's fault....
8. My 86 VR will start up normal. I'll let it warm up for a while then take off. The bike will run rough until its fully warmed up. Its running rough longer than I think it should under the guise of being "cold blooded".. Could this symptom possibly be a coil going bad?
9. Wishing everyone a save and fun weekend. We would be there if we could. I'll be thinking of you all while I have a cold one looking out over the Pacific. Gary & Mary
10. I looked and got a few ideas from other cold pipe threads. I got the 01 RSV about a month or so ago, and don't know the history on it except that it needed an oil change soon. I have ridden it a few times, just to get the feel of it, and have found that there are a few annoying little things that were mentioned when I picked it up, like dropping out of curse,,,, and it does. In a couple of weeks I am going to tare it down to the frame and do a repaint, and Trike it. I am going to get the normal things while it is down to the frame like fuel filter, plugs (maybe platinum ) things like that that are a little bit of a pain to change. I am in the toolies, and don't have access to a sync thingie to check the carbs,, I start it now and then to keep the battery up, and fluids flowing. I noticed tonight that the right rear cylinder pipe is cold..?? I run the RPM's up a little and it gets hot like the others, but as soon as it goes back to idle the pipe cools right off and can be touched,,,,, Stumped, and out of my element some here. I sprayed carb cleaner around that carb while idling, and it seemed that the pipe got a tad hotter for a split sec. Am I on the right track. There are other cruiser types here in our big city but closest shop is 75 miles away. I guess I will be looking for a good local guy to help, and maybe sync the carbs. It runs out good some slight hesitation on pull off then OK...
11. I had an opportunity to resolder the circuit board in a spare CMOS unit from my original MKI instrument cluster. I was able to get a fairly good close up picture of an example of some cold solder joints that I thought I would post. This may be helpful to someone that has never seen a cold solder joint. There are 8 large connections in picture that all show some signs of a cold joint. The circular ridge around the base of the soldered joint is the sign of a cold joint. The worst case is the far right joint. The smaller connections in the upper right corner are good solder joints. For a size relationship, the large row of 4 joints is 3/4" in length. Gary
12. ... as I'm noticing less and less new threads and/or posts showing up. Looks like we're finally shedding the crappy weather we've been having. Today, tomorrow, and Sunday all sunny and warm ... it is a welcome change from rain, cold, high winds, hail, etc that has been going on for weeks. I just "might" take the scoot out...after I clean it of all the cobwebs!!
13. I've been reading about a couple other noises and it got me thinking about my 06 RSTD and the kind of honking noise it makes when its iding higher than normal cold with the choke half on. It has a kind of rythem and is not there once I shut the choke off and its at a normal rpm. Any ideas?
14. Generally my venture doesn't take much choke to start it. After a cool start up from outside I drove straight into my garage(no warm up). Next day went to start and only running on 3 cylinders. three hot one cold. Took the plug out it was wet and fouled, I replaced only that plug but it still is not running the same. Any thoughts on this? Should replace all plugs? Just replaced begining of last year.
15. Well I ought to know better, but I took the weatherman at his word. The weather here was supposed to be partly cloudy, 20% chance of afternoon spot showers and temperature near 60. Well we took off this morning for a ride to a "Blessing of the Bikes" event in Philadelphia, MS (184 mile round trip). Temp was 55 when we left and sun was trying to break through. Well the farther we rode, the cloudier it got and the cooler it got and the wind was gusting enough to blow us around on the road. When we got to Philadelphia the temp on one business sign was 49F. Oh well we made it and had a good time. Got a cold hot dog, a bag of chips and a drink, for lunch. Met some really nice folks and even though we had the only RSV there we did see two RSTDs. Trip back was even cooler as we were riding back INTO the gusty wind. All in all though, a good day, even though for one un-named RSMV rider it was "too cold" to come out!!! :stickpoke::rasberry:
16. As the frigid & cold weather starts to taper off here in the south, I find myself doing what a lot of others are doing... Watching the weather forecasts like our lives depend on it. Obviously, it's been great riding weather here in ENC for the past few days, cresting over 60 degrees... Today is supposed to be around 66 degrees... Outstanding. There WAS, however, a minor oversight on my part... Overnight lows. I'm all dressed for work, in my slacks & polo shirt, strapping on my leather jacket, and gloves, with a fleece underneath. I opt for the half-helmet with the removable ear muffs... I'm ready to roll. 34 degrees as I'm beginning my 40 mile journey to work... Stupid, stupid, stupid... Shoulda bought chaps when I was at Shamrock Biker Outfitters last time. 20 minutes in, legs go numb, face moves really slow when I try to poorly sing along with The Doobie Brothers (jammin' from my Shark Radio) but my torso is cozy... Khakis are the worst cold-weather gear known to man, next to shorts. I'd like to say "I don't know what I was thinking..." but I do. I was thinking, "It's gonna be 66 on the way home. This is worth it." It's really not. I should've just ridden when I got home from work. Since I don't have any lower deflectors to go with my Nat'l Cycle Switchblade windshield, the wind came right over the tank, and in my face. Clicked a few values into a wind chill calculator, and it was about 15 degrees. I've been at work for 2 hours, and I STILL don't have complete feeling in my legs, not to mention they are STILL cold. If anyone knows a nice alternative to spending $150 on lower deflectors from Nat'l Cycle, or fabricating a mount from my factory windshield/lower mounts, let me know. I'm gonna need 'em.
17. Tejas Motorsports, a local Yamaha dealer, just called me and offered me $1000 for my '06 RSTD. They said they were experiencing great demand for used bikes, and wanted mine. I think what they were saying is that they were offering $1000 over the bluebook or trade-in value. I wasn't selling, so I didn't seek much clarification. When I said no thank you, I was offered a free fuel treatment on my next service. Thanks but.... The last question was whether I would be buying a new bike in the next 12 months. No. Seems pretty aggressive to cold call past customers like this. (They've mounted tires for me.) Would any of you take that offer? Dave
18. My starter button feels like it wants to stick a little and feels a bit stiff. It is still cold here but it feels gummy when I press it, any suggestions?
19. There was snow where I wasn't expecting it .... oh well, we had a great time anyway!
20. BOO

Finally!

I usually leave the first of Feb to go to Florida. I'm suppose to be retired BUT I took on this job a few months ago to remodel an old 4 flat into a duplex.. Figured what the heck, two or three months should be done. The job drug on and on AND finally was jeopardizing my time in Florida. Finally finished installing the counter tops this afternoon and I'm out of this cold and snowy weather first thing in the morning Wahoo, Wahoo.... Should be in southern Georgia by tomorrow night then on down to the Fort Myer area till the end of the month. No bike though, just the cage. Did I mention the shorts and flip flops? AND I don't want any of you northerners sending down any cold weather, just keep it till I get back. Had to clean three inches off the drive this evening but I was smiling. BOO
21. WITH ALL THE TALK ABOUT RIDING IN THE COLD EVEN IN FLORIDIA IT GOT ME THINKING. I CAME UPON THIS A FEW YEARS AGO, AND JUST DUG IT UP. INTRESTING INFO ON HOW COLD IT REALLY IS RIDING IN THE WINTER.:cold: http://webmaster10.com/ldr/windchill.html This is the new chart that the National Weather Service will start using for the 2001/2002 winter season.http://webmaster10.com/ldr/windchillchart.gif
22. Let's hear your best "It's so cold out"..... It's so cold out only guys with names like Al or Ed have time to write their name in the snow...... ought to be good to see some of these answers
23. It's cold, it's snowy, so what to do? Well, I ride anyway. Only did 30 miles but it was a beautiful day out. Warm or cold, sun or rain. Gotta get out and enjoy the planet.
24. Woke up to 4 inches of snow and still coming down. Below 0 temps predicted at night. You guys up north stop sending us this cold. I am getting PMS (Parked Motorcycle Syndrone).
