  1. its hot here in peru IL but i had to go out and do some errands i was driving the pontiac grandprix its black in color i had the a/c on high as it can go and it was ice cold in there. i pulled up into my yard to go get somethings out of my apartment when it hit me. i felt like someone sucker punched me right in the head and guts. i went down to the ground and my leggs started to cramp. i did manage to get inside my apartment where i started to drink warm not cold water. i did not make it out to run my errands as im sick to my guts and my head feels like the little drummer boy is in there beating his drum. and im running a light fever of about 100.6 dang i thought here we go another heat stroke like i had back in 1978 while in the army. right now im feeling a little better and the a/c is helping along with gatoraid. i just want to say be carefull out there in 90+ heat and high humidity
  2. Hey all, Love the site, except that it steals hours away from me as I spend too much time reading through years worth of very helpful threads. I picked up my 02 RSV about three weeks ago. After 1,500 miles I'm loving it more every day. My wife loves it at least as much as I. There is just one issue I'm hoping you folks can help with. The wife isn't enjoying the wind at highway speeds. According to her, she is getting knocked around a lot worse than she does on the back of my Volusia which only has a small shield to keep the wind off my chest. So here are the details. The shield on my RSV is 17inches tall and 23 wide. She is 5'8 and weighs about 105. I'm 5'7 and weigh a bit more than I should. She enjoys the very little wind on her legs (especially in the cold weather), but gets pounded on the upper body and head. I'm thinking that the wind is being deflected over\around me and directly into her. I ride as long as it is above 20 degrees. At that temp I find my lower back getting cold which further makes me think the wind is wrapping around me. The front of my body stays comfortable. Do other folks passengers experience such a rough time with the wind? Any suggestions on how to make the spouse's ride more comfortable? Thanks Muchly, Dan.
  3. Hello everyone, I come in need of some help. I recently purchased (3 months ago) a 99 RSV with 2k miles. She was mostly stored, when i brought her home i did a complete oils, plugs, and fluid flush. She runs great, but now at almost 5k miles its now making an interesting noise / rattle when you let off the throttle. Listen to the file title rattle.mp3. It makes the noise when the engine is warm, not so much when it's cold. Could it need a valve adjustment? The other audio file is what she sounds like when cold. Not sure if its the right noise or not, but that's the way she sounds. Any help would be appreciated.
  4. Yes Beartooth pass officially opened all the way across last Monday. My wife, her sister & brother in law from Rome, Georgia and I rode across. Beautiful and cold. 33 degrees at the top with probably a 20mph wind. here are a couple of pictures. Norm
  5. I've been wondering lately on what the road conditions over Beartooth Pass would be like for the Rally in Cody. With all the weather they've been getting, and BT always being dicey, I thought it still might be snowed in. Not so. The highway is actually open thanks the the various agencies responsible for road up keep. It might be a tad cold and it would be a good idea to bring your cold weather gear. It even got a little nippy on top in '09. Here's the site for up-to-date reports. BEERTOOTH Looks like it'll dry out by late July. :cody
  6. Tried to fire up the Venture last night and it will not start. Checked exhaust headers when she did start for a brief period and the back L&R were hot. Front L&R were cold. She would repeatedly fire and lug on the rear two cylinders for approx. 15 to 30 seconds and die. What should I check and how?
  7. Hi, I purchased a Battery Bug from Argus Analyzer and I wrote them an email yesterday with a question concerning my Battery Bug that I installed on my 04 RSV. Here is Jim's response. He responded within 24 hours of my initial question and the article he attached is that written by Stu Oltman, the editor of Wing World Magazine. I just had to share that with the good folks on the forum here. His timely response and the article he sent me answered all my questions and alleviated any of my worry or anxiety about the operation of the Bug. All in all I think they are great folks to deal with. I don't know how to attach a word doc or I would put it in here. I don't have a date for the month the evaluation was written up in Wing Word Magazine but I know Stu and he wrote an excellent review. Chris in Red Deer, Alberta Chris - Remember the ‘Bug is showing “Cranking Health” not the “Battery Life”. Think of Cranking Health as the battery’s ability to do its job of starting the engine. There are many factors affecting that ability. Chiefly - the SIZE of the battery. A tiny battery and a HUGE engine will give a low Cranking Health % even when the battery is new - because the battery will have a hard time cranking that engine. In addition – cold temperatures will affect cranking health in a negative way. Cold temps make it harder to crank the engine both because the battery is cold AND the engine oil is cold an sluggish. Remember also that the %-age on the display ONLY goes down. It is displaying the WORST start and therefore the number will never go up again. Expect the % cranking health displayed to steady itself after a few weeks, then slowly descend over time. Attached is an article that you might find interesting as well. Please let me know if you have more questions! Jim Argus Analyzers 401-965-4569
  8. I've read up on a couple of threads on Cold Blooded for after my VR sat for 5 days it had a very tough time starting and to keep running and getting warmed up. It must have taken 5 minutes or more for the temp gage to just start moving up. I did not ride it but let it warm up to normal operating temp. Now this morning about 24 hours later my VR started right up and in about 1 minute I could put the choke off. So what would make the difference between 1 day sitting and 5 days sitting? I'm in the Seattle area and even tho we are almost in May, It hailed in Buckley yesterday, so it was quite cold last night around 37 degrees. Just wondering being that I'm trying to get a feel as to how often I should start the VR up being that I'm not a daily rider or even a weekly rider being that I work 26 days on and 2 days off. At this time I'll probably at least start the VR up once a week. I'm not trying to be too pickey but I thought that 5 days without running it should start right up.
  9. I know everyone says they make a big improvement on the "cold knees", but do they keep the rain from getting to the inside of your pants legs?
  10. I've had a time with this *** leg and cold this winter and it seems to be getting worse. I have blood clots in it and it aches when cold. I expected that during the winter when it was really cold but started to try and get out a little as weather is starting to break and it is worse. Only way I can get pain to stop is get in a hot tub of water and soak the thing. Cutting down my outside activity a lot. Any ideas on how to keep it warm without roasting the rest of me. What makes it react to cold like that? Blood flow not what it used to be. Time to Quit Riding?? I ain't buying it!!! My want to is back up from last couple years but this thing just won't let me go. Pills don't stop the cold ache.
  11. Coldest Canadian riding across Canada in 19 days? Crazy and cold? No worry that the bike overheats. http://coldestcanadian.ca/19-days-bone-chillin-riding
  12. Ok, I take the blame... I was bragging about how we don't get snow and cold in Victoria BC. Well, got one foot of snow at my house last night and it is freezing cold {for Victoria} ... hard on the flowers! I am sorry I bragged.....

  14. Well, you folks in Texas are really going to put it to us this time...or so the weatherman says.....they have to blame somebody, right? They're guesstimating approximately 35 cm's in the next 24 hours.....well over a foot! How the heck is Wiarton Willie....Poughkeepsie Pete's cousin...ever going to see his shadow? This has been a real winter here in southern ontario....cold, cold, cold, more snow than the historical averages.....wow! I guess on the plus side...if it's coming from Texas....it's gonna be "warm" snow, right? gunk:doh:
  15. woke up at 5:30 this morning and it was 47 below zero here.. dont know what it were with the windchill .. even here in Minnesoda thats cold...:smile11:
  16. I want to check the valve clearances on my 96 Royal Star. The manual states they should be checked cold (less than 95 degrees) at room temperature. I only have an old wood stove in my shop and although I can get the inside temperature high enough to make it comfortable for working, I don't think it would be considered room temperature. What do you think would be the minimum temperature to be sure I get accurate clearance readings? I would like to get the valves adjusted and reassemble the bike but would it be better for me to wait till Spring when the outside temterature gets higher? I don't want to do all this work and get inaccurate readings because the engine is too cold. Thanks Doug
  17. Hello to all. I am in a great need for some help. I live in NC and with the cold weather we have had and me starting a new job I have not had alot of time to ride my bike. I have a 2000 MM and I went out to start it up and I was letting it run since it has been cold. I went out to check on it and noticed a large cloud of smoke coming from underneath the motor and then I looked under the motor and noticed water pouring out of the bottom. I was wondering if anyone on here would have suggestions as to what the problem is. Thank you in advance for the help that I will receive with this issue. Hopefully it will not cost me alot of
  18. It was quite chilly today for the ride in. I have a heated jacket liner and gloves and the bike has a heated seat and grips which were all set on HIGH. I was wearing wool socks in by boots but my feet got cold. I probably will not ride in weather this cold again..... BURRRRRRRRRRRRR The one real complaint is my glasses and face shield got foggy whenever I slowed or stopped but at 40 MPH or faster I had no fogging issues. Being blind at a stoplight is NOT good......
  19. Considering it is a balmy 21 degrees here this morning in South Carolina with an expected low of 16 degrees in the morning, I know that it is really, really cold up north. With that in mind, do you have issues with your automatic garage door openers being able to function in the extreme cold? Do you have automatic garage door openers specifically designed for cold weather or just keep your garage heated? Just a want to know from me! Stay warm, Bobbie
  20. I've notice something over the last few days. The tach on my '84 don't seem to enjoy the cold mornings at all. I've been dealing with temps in the teens and 20's most mornings lately and when I fire the bike up the tach just don't want to get with the program. Don't want to move at all or if it does it's sluggish. Later in the day as it warms up into the high 20's or better it's back to normal. I've had this bike for three years now but this is the first time I've ridden it daily into the winter months so I've never noticed if it was problem before in the cold. Anybody else have this as an issue? Mike
  21. Was getting cabin fever already here in IL, and with the sun shining, and a toasty 36 degrees out, I got the bike out and rode for about an hour. Heated gloves, toe warmers in my boots, extra layer of leather on and my Shark Evoline in full face mode, I was pretty toasty, although I forgot the face/neck wrap that would have kept away a little of a draft. Still was nice to get out, never saw another bike. Any other cold weather riders out there?
  22. Two guest rooms finished and two more to go.........going to be a long winter.. Taters don't like our riding companions leaving after dark, or in the rain, or the cold, or after a pop or two....just hope my kids don't decide to move back in.........
  23. OK, ok, I was just joking about the plow and snow tires, but I wanted to get your attention. I have been investigating "Hippo Hands" and think they are viable solution to cold hands, but wanted to see if anyone has feedback about them. Some feedback is the wind puts some pressure on the clutch and brake levers when you're on the highway. Other people have said they are "the best thing since sliced bread". The ones I need are $73.00 so I just don't want to throw the money away if they aren't going to do the trick. I'm also curious about any quick removable insulated chaps. Not the leather kind, but maybe a snow suit type material with some down feathers and maybe some velcro straps that can be easily-on/easily-off. Any feedback would be really appreciated as the cold weather is rapidly approaching. Thanks, Woody
  24. What kind of gloves does every one use to keep your hands warm, but most importantly, keep your hands dry in a torrential down pour? I rode in a hard rain with a pair of leather gloves with Thinsulate and my hands were soaked and cold. There has got to be something better out there. I would like to hear some reviews and opinions before I buy another pair that doesn't do their job.
  25. My bike felt sluggish so when it was cold I started it and sure as heck the front right cylinder was cold so I took out the plug, which is almost new and I use only iridium plugs, and checked for spark and had it. I am wondering if there is an easy way to clean out that one carb and not pull the whole Assembly, I always use seafoam and marvel mystery oil so I do not understand why the carb is plugged. Tom
