  1. Clutch won't competely disengage? How do I adjust the clutch pull cable? Coming to a stop and holding the clutch lever in, the bike wants to creep ahead. Sometimes this will stall the engine and then it's hard to crank over because of the low gear drag on the starter. I know it's probably an easy fix, but I need your help. Owen.
  2. So I swapped a (mostly) 1300cc engine into my bike and now I am left with a 1200 engine that I have no room for. I want to get rid of it, but keep any parts that I might need as spares. The donor motor had no covers, so mine went back on. Same with clutch basket. The motor has been pulled apart and will be heading to scrap soon. This is what I am saving so far: -Starter clutch (good condition, no cracks) -Valve covers -Misc bolts/nuts/washers -Valve shims If anyone has a suggestion as to what else I should keep from it, otherwise I will be tossing/recycling the rest of it: -Engine cases (upper & lower, 1200cc) appear to be in good condition -Heads (from 1300) - they are in rough condition, rusty & stuck valves (don't appear to be bent tho) -Rotating assembly (pistons, crank, counterbalance, transmission, output shaft) ---Main bearing journals have some scratches in them ---2nd gear issue on transmission parts -Camshafts & chains I am basically in the mindset of "I've been in there once, I'm not going back in", so I don't forsee the need of keeping the engine or any internal parts. Plus I'm not really an ebay seller type of guy so not saving parts to sell. -Andrew p.s. If anyone wants the remains for free...
  3. I have recently purchased a 1999 rsv. I previously rode a goldwing. I am enjoying the different ride provided by the venture. But now I am experiencing a clutch slip at the higher rep range. When applying throttle it is like the clutch lever was engaged and the bike revs up. I will change out the clutch fluid and check the clutch spring and I am hoping this will fix the problem. My question is how long should a clutch replacement take and how much will this set me back?
  4. I've noticed my clutch slipping when I shift down to pass a car and get on to it in 3rd gear it seems to slip a little bit and then kicks in. Is this unusual for a bike with 28k. I have towed a trailer for some of that. I don't really notice any other time.
  5. I have Tour Deluxe and I have looked over the different post, but still seem to be lost. I need pictures as to where to bleed the clutch fluid would like to install the speed bleeders but not sure where they go? Any help would be great. Thanks, Dan
  6. I am just throwing this out there. My clutch seems to be slipping just a little bit. Now it is too late for ordering and replacing at this stage before we begin our journey east. I was wondering if I somehow got a hold of one if I could get it changed out at the International and would there be anyone willing to help? Can this be done there? I do pull a camper so I expect that if its slipping a little now it may become alot worse by the time our trip is done. Feed back is greatly appreciated!
  7. I've been working on the 83, the one my brother has been using. When it got here, it had only had the front brake working, a weak alternator, a big oil leak on the left side, and a slipping clutch. plus it had lots of other problems. The last 3 months, I've been working on it, and after fixing everything else and then rebuilding the rear master cylinder I finally took it for a good ride. Another problem has shown up. Sometimes it's real hard to downshift, especially from 4th to 3rd. When this happens, you have to let the clutch out a little and then it'll go. Before I thought of letting the clutch out a little to load 4th gear a little, I thought I might be limping home in 4th. I suppose I should mention that this thing has 140,000 miles on it and at 82K I fixed 2nd gear, but 3 years ago when I last saw it it shifted OK I should also mention that my brother isn't too gentle on the old girl---he likes to powershift, and I've seen him pushing hard on the shift lever. To fix the clutch, I installed a Skydoc spring and full inside clutch plate kit. Now the clutch doesn't slip and it does seem to be disengaging all the way when the lever is pulled in. In this project, I replaced the slave cylnder, and replaced all of the brake fluid. It's clean, fresh and completely bled. The clutch lever feels good, and is engaging at the correct point. When I did 2nd gear (10-12 years ago), I replaced the shift drum and 2nd gear, as per the Yammie service bulletin. I don't think I replaced the 4th gear shift fork, but I did replace 1st and 2nd gear shift forks I've checked the shift linkage----the hole in the left engine cover that the shift linkage shaft passes through is worn a bit, so it's sloppy and the pivot for the shift lever is a bit worn also, however there is no play in the linkage inside of the gearbox itself. I oiled the shift linkage and took it for another ride last night, and it was a lot better, but not correct. If I wanted to shift down from 5 to 3rd, sometimes I had to let the clutch out a little to get it to go from 4th to 3rd. BTW, neutral is a bit of a pain to get into. If you're moving, it'll go from 2nd to neutral fine. If you're stopped and in first, you have to let the clutch out a little briefly like you're taking off, and if you are pulling up on the shift lever when you pull the clutch back in, it'll go to neutral. I'm wondering if my brother didn't bend a shift lever because it feels as if the shift drum is hard to turn. Or, is it because of the 140K and almost 30 years, just worn out? I know that several riders that have heel/toe shifters installed have had something break....does anybody know what they break? The bike is rideable, but if something in the shift linkage is damaged and lets go, it could leave my brother stranded. Any ideas??? Frank D.
  8. Ever since I bought my bike it's had Samson pipes on it that are on the LOUD side, I pulled them off and put the stock pipes back on and now can hear the engine and road noise Things sure are quiet! I do have a little chirp coming from the clutch area, I don't think it's the whine so many complain about. Were planning about 3000 miles with the International Rally being the start and thought it would be nice to actually hear the radio and CB without having to wear ear plugs all the time.
  9. Does anyone know where to get a clutch switch for a MKII? Mine was broken & rigged by the PO as a fix- I just figured it out after a few years of ownership whilentrying to diagnose a cruise control problem. I can't find the part number anywhere. Looking at the online microfiches, I am having trouble actually identifying the actual part. Another idea- By chance does anyone have a spare that they are willing to sell?
  10. I have searched all night and can't seem to find the brass bushing for the clutch lever. I found the one that pushes the rod to actuate the clutch but I can't find the one where the bolt goes thru for the lever itself. Mine is egg shaped and the handle wobbles around quite a bit. Anyone know if this is replaceable? It's not shown on the Star parts list only the one that pushes the rod. Scott
  11. I have a 2000 Royal Star Venture and I have a leak that is making me crazy. Yamahas are not supposed to leak. It forms a pool on the lower shock and drips. I recently changed the clutch fluid. Is this the slave cylander leaking?
  12. I just replaced the shift shaft seal over the weekend and it seemed to go well. I rode 40 miles to work today no problem. On the way home I needed to downshift for slowing traffic, and I could not push the shifter down to get into 4th gear. The only odd thing I noticed when putting the clutch basket assembly back together was that when I put the splined thrust washer on after the clutch basket, the place on the shaft where the thrust washer ends up has no splines. I thought that was strange, but I know I put the washer on in the correct order, after the basket but before the rest of the assembly. The clutch pull at the handlebar did seem not quite as firm tonight, but that could have been my imagination as I was looking for possible causes as I rode. Each time I could not downshift, I waited a few seconds and tried again and it worked. I upshifted with no problem. Any ideas?
  13. Well, it all started towards the end of last season (which was the beginning of October for me because of my wedding and then spinal surgery). I got my progressive springs in, replaced the upper and lower twinkie "o"-rings, re-sealed the output shaft, and flushed and bled the clutch and all brake systems. Towards the end of last season the clutch was disengaging about 1/4" off of the handlebars if not closer. Was having a hard time finding neutral and downshifting. Once I did all of the above maintenance this year (may) I bled the clutch. I had the bike inspected last weekend, passed 100%. Now today, after I visited with my grandmother on the way home I had the similar clutch symptoms as last year (hard downshifting, can't find neutral with the engine running, squishy clutch pull and disengaging right at the handlebar, only now its actually dragging at stop lights and putting a load on the engine. What gives, is my clutch master finally giving out? Can I take this time to upgrade to a newer clutch master cylinder off of a vmax or royale star? Any insight? Thanks.
  14. Please correct me if I am wrong I don't think there is a clutch cable but I have a lot of play when pulling in the lever. One day after work my bike did lunge forward despite having the lever pulled all the way in or bike in "neutral". Don't remember which at this point, but I think it was lever pulled all the way in. This morning going to work I had a really hard time upshifting. Downshifting, no problem. Upshifting I have to push down on the pedal 2-3 times and then it will engage. I was at a stop light with lever all the way in and again bike was moving forward. I hope it isn't the clutch as I just had it down around 60k miles. I am around 78k now. Thoughts?
  15. During Maintenance Day I changed my Clutch Spring, Friction Rings and the Steel Rings. Because of unexpected tire wear I also had to change my tire for a used one to get me back home so I never got to "really see" what the new clutch set up would do. Well I finally got a new tire installed last week and got to see just what the new clutch set up would do. All I can say is WOW. I was advised that the clutch throw would be a bit harder and to be honest that took all of about 5 or 6 times starting out to get used to that, and even then it was not as huge a difference as I expected. Where the real difference came was when I really dropped the hammer and then fast shifted in to second. I immediately found out two things. One, that yes you can get the front wheel of a second gen off the ground. Two, when you do that the passenger will say "what the was that? It whipped my head back", and find several "endearing things" to call you. Now here is the fun part. If, after explaining to the passenger that you just lifted the front wheel off the ground, and, you are lucky enough to have the right passenger, you WILL be told (not asked) to do it again If your clutch is slipping and you want to get performance out of your second gen then I would highly recommend SkyDoc_17's clutch package. You won't just get a grin put on your face. You will get one plastered on it and you will think your face will break from grinning so damn hard.
  16. I rode my VR to work today for the first time. Everything went well until I was coming back from lunch. About a 1/2 mile from work, my clutch started slipping. By the time I pulled into the parking lot, I had to just idle into the parking space because if I tried to give it any gas, it would just slip. I had a similar problem before but only when I got on the gas really hard. After bleeding the clutch, the problem seemed to stop. Now I'm faced with the problem of getting the bike home this afternoon. Any idea what would have caused this to happen?
  17. Just picked up my project for next winter. A true barn find. 1975 Moto Guzzi 850T with 17k miles. Motor turns freely, inside of tank is in OK condition, no dents in tank, forks are straight, frame is solid and rust free, and seat is in good shape. PO put on a Windjammer which is going to have to go. Bought if from a guy that had it stored in his shed for over 10 years. It was his father's who passed in 2001. He was going to get it running but didn't have any time (or ability). It was last started in 2002 or 2003. Will need: Master brake cylinder rebuild Airbox replacement (has pods now) centerstand repair saddle bags either removed or repaired Windjammer removed and headlight moved back to forks With the removal of the fairing, will need turn signals All rubber (grips, peg covers, tires) Repaint and stripe (leaking MC got brake fluid on tank) Replace throttle cables and likely clutch cable Clutch handle NOS exhaust (current is home fabbed) Wish me luck. RR
  18. Sooo New guy here trying to remove the starter clutch so i can send to Dano. I got the covers off no problem. How do you lock up the rotor to get the bolt out and do you have to take the gear loose before you pull the rotor? Thanks Kevin:confused24:
  19. I just finished draining the old fluid and filling with fresh Dot 4. I bled it until I have all new fluid from the bleeder valve and no bubbles. Problem is now with the system all closed up I cant get the clutch lever to build any pressure and engage the clutch. Any suggestions to solve the problem?
  20. Just kind of wondering since i can't find a bleed spot or maybe i'm just missing it. Little help for a newbie:thumbsup:
  21. Problem solved! Bad eyesight lead to alignment problem. Corrected and works fine now. I know I have seen step by step instructions on swapping out the clutch basket but I can not find it. It may be on the other site I'm not sure. My 2001 Venture has gone from almost no whine when I bought it with 4,500 miles on it to screaming with almost 16,000 miles on it. My question is, Is the nut that holds the smaller disk basket into the larger clutch basket a standard thread or a reverse thread? I have tried with all my might to loosen it by turning it to the left. I even added a 3 foot piece of steel rod to it and it will not budge. With only 4,500 miles on it I don't know why anyone would have gone in there but I thick they did. I think they tightened it down with a lot more than 50 lbs of torgue. Non of the clutch disk are lined up as they should be. Evidently that is not important because it has been shifting fine for the last 11,000 miles. Any suggestions on which way to turn that nut and how to break it free would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Harry
  22. Greetings All, So the clutch is definitely slipping and a long trip is on the horizon. So it has to be corrected before the trip. So is there a recommended dealership or parts dist that this forum recommends/supports? Is the VMax spring (A: essentially the same spring only stouter? (B: I have a 2007 Venture with 58K miles. What should I expected to pay for the spring? Have done the spring on a Kawasaki 1500, so am familiar with the *basic* process... Thanks in advance. Jim
  23. On the way to work last night I got on the throttle in 3rd gear and around 6 grand on the tach the clutch slipped. This is the first time it has given me any trouble. I have a set of EBC springs I picked up on Ebay, anybody ever used them?? I am going to pull it apart this weekend and rough up the steels and put the new springs in. Anything else I should do while I have it apart that you can think of? I wish I could mic it but my nephew is going to school for machining and I gave him my mics to use.
  24. I've got a 09 rsv that i bought brand new I'm now closing in on 65,000 miles mostly highway miles with a few floor board dragging racing down the back road miles what should I expect out of this bike as far as a clutch life? I bought this bike because my other one has a ton of miles on it and its not the most comfortable with plans of getting the gen 3 when they "or if" come out really don't want to rack up the miles just to stick a clutch in and sell it P.s clutch works fine at this point
  25. Just took my RSV out of the shop after winter upgrades. It is running great, however, ..... When I hit it hard, the darn clutch slips. I have an upgraded Skydoc17 spring and have done the Freebird mod. If I drive normally, it doesn't slip. But if I really hammer it, the clutch slips in second and third gear. I was travelling too fast at the time to see if it would also slip in fourth, but I'm sure it will. I am looking for a solution so I don't have to deal with this every couple of years. OK, the question is: Barnett clutch with coil springs? Is that the most solid solution? Getting to the point that I don't care about the cost. RR
