1. 2006 RSTD 38,000 miles Well twice I have be stuck Glad it was in my drive way I start the bike as usual choke - start about 20 seconds - choke in Twice it has started barely an idle then Dies repeat-repeat-repeat That's all i can get from it First time took about a half hour of starting an dying to run Today it had to be at least 20 starts and gave up called a friend with a trailer just went out it runs fine I am thinking it the fuel pump I don't hear it when I turn the key Now I hear it It doesn't seem flooded no gas smell Any help thanks
2. Dont know how else to title this and wanted all to know IF similar problems. OK Goose Remember we chatted about the Gas Smell and how I know of members that never have to use their choke? WELL, I no longer smell gas! Each day I have started the bike and have yet to use the choke! I guess either the Float resetting or the new plugs had something to do with it..I really think it was the float level as far off as that one was. ALSO,I do not think it has EVER ran smoother. I havnt given it a good run yet due to tring to gather screws I lost and now going to repair cracks in the fairing at windshield mount. Anyway Thanks, its nice to not smell the gas anymore! As far as the 44K goose mentioned in a previous post I have used it for 2 years or so and it is good stuff. My carbs on the inside were spotless.
3. My friend has a Midnight Venture and recently had a carb repair at a local shop. Now the bike will crank and run on choke but as soon as he turns the choke off the carbs start dumping gas on the ground. I'm thinking float setting is wrong. If anyone has had similar problems please share.
4. Thanks to all--Finishing re-installing the carbs last night at 21:30. Sooooooooooo much fun--cross threaded the back bolt on the fuel tank-other than that just very time consuming and tedious. Floats at .33--idle at 2 3/4 tu:banana:rns out from stop--fuel filter--air filters--plugs. Heart pounding as I attempted to start her up--nothing--what now? Woops emergency shut off dummy. Ok try it again--wow immediate snarl and a fast smooth idle.. Check exhaust--ya hot stuff on both sides--no gas spurtting out Wait a couple of minutes--now the big test--ease in the choke By golly its idling on its own--adjust the idle speed--Ya baby. Drove her to work this am--wow what a treat--smooth both on and off throttle How sweet--The Fire Truck is back on the road. Thanks to all you folks that helped me through this endeavor--very rewarding. ED
5. A buddy of mine is out of work and is exchanging some carpentry work for motorcycle repair. I hope he is a better carpenter than I am a mechanic. I am hoping someone knows something about this bike since I cannot seem to find a good forum for these. My friend took his '84 Magna 700 out of storage yesterday and could not get it to run without the choke on. If the choke is released, it just dies. It ran fine when it was put away last fall. We do not have a repair manual for the Magna. So far, we changed the plugs, drained the bowls (gas looked good, no gunk), cleaned the air filter, and fixed a few unrelated wiring issues (stator connector was completely cooked). Of the old plugs that were removed, 3 looked OK, one (front right) was wet. I was not able to find mixture adjustment screws to see if they were out of whack. Questions: 1) It appears there are sync adjustments on the linkage between the carbs. 2 between the front 2 carbs, and one between the rears. Is that what these screws are? I assume the rear right carb is the 'master' that the other 3 sync to - is this correct? 2) If these are the sync adjustments, where do I hook up the vacuum gage to measure the relative vacuum? I have a Morgan Carbtune that will read 4 carbs at once. 3) What would cause the bike to run while under choke, and die immediately when choke is removed? We ran it long enough to warm up. 4) How do you adjust the mixture in the carbs? Thanks for your help. So far, I find the Magna to be an interesting bike with some very nice design features (love the hinged gas tank with the support rod). RR
6. i just bought my first venture. i love it got a real good price ....anyhow i get the bike home have it one day and go out the next morning and go to start the bike turns over once and i had forgot the choke so i let go of the start button set the choke and nuthin it shorts out whole bike goes dark let go of button and lights come back on hear selonid clicking read the forums traced the circuts got power every where up to selonoid jumped accross and nuthin again sounds like starter is whirring very quietly like not actuating any advise would be helpfull thanks
7. First let me say I have been thru many types of carbs. This spring while getting my '87 on the road after 2 years of working on the engine I misdiagnosed a carb issue ...which was actually the boost sensor leaking. Also, I should have known better since the carbs had been drain dry 2 years ago. BUT now I have rebuilt the carbs. Using the "Gunk" bucket for all internal jets and housings. Which infact the carbs were quite spotless from the beginning. HERE'S the ODD thing(s). (1) I can do a 1st morning start with NO CHOKE just by twisting the throttle on a 70 degree day. And it will idle at 600 and slowly warms to the standard 950 or so. Not needing the choke at all. I could never do this prior to my carb work. CAN ANYONE ELSE DO THIS??? If I want, it will start w/half choke and rev to 2500 or so. I did set the low speed jets(w/digital tach) and the bike will idle forever and not load up. I do have new slide assys that I install 8k ago.. On the highway it not as smooth at my usual cruising speed of 72mph as I remember. I have removed my Jason-MOD so I could get an honest reading of the spark plugs. I removed the spark plugs after a good long ride,to check them. Oddly there are 2 colors on each...like a zebra. Light on one side and dark brown on the other side. Carbs are sync'd at idle and 3000rpm. My mileage on my 1st 2 tanks have been 41 back roads(tank 1) and 37.5 mostly highway(tank 2), but faster than 70mph. I used to get 40mpg all the time. I will say the bike pulls w/o any hesitation no matter what the temp. guage reads. So could she be too rich above idle? Floats are set to spec-16mm below middle mark. Checked both on(by shimming the center stand for perfect level) and off the bike.Lastly, when I did the rebuild I did not replace the o-rings(looked good under the magnifine glass) and rubber plugs. I think now:think: maybe I should have...ugh! Wish I had an EGA machine. Nearest dealer with one is 35 miles away. AND making an appointment is not easy. I don't leave my bike at the dealer. I would really like it if you guys could please give me your input before I order $80 in parts and yank the carbs. PS, trying to get this done by end of this month. Americade is almost here...
8. Well, here I go again. I had so much fun fixing my brake issue...that now I'd like to tackle my rough starting problem. My bike is an 83'. She's got 60,000+ miles on her, but she's been pretty well taken care of. I'm the 3rd owner. My problem is, she's a pistle to get started cold! I mean I've actually had to start using my car to jump her. Now, she has a new battery as of the fall of 2008. I keep it on a trickle charge when I'm not riding. But she just doesn't seem to want to start any more. Again, last fall I put in new plugs and wires. I was thinking that maybe I need a carb job or something. I've run seafoam through her for the past couple of fillups. Still she starts rough. I can't seem to work out when to choke her and when not to. If I give her a lot of choke she won't start at all. In the middle, sometimes she'll start. Less choke, she sometimes starts easier. Mostly it seems to start when I apply full choke, try to start, and fail, then switch to less choke and try again. But again, I need to use the car to jump it. All the connecting on the battery terminal seem to be clean. I check the connection at the starter. That looks good too. Oh, and when it does start, is seems to be putting out volts with the stater. Around 16 or so by the dash board meter. Once I've got her running and she warms up she does pretty well. Good exceleration. Plenty of power. Idles well. Maybe a little rough here and there. I mean I know she could be better...but what do I do? Should I mod the battery cables? Rebuild the carbs? Get a new tune up? Take her to a shop? I don't know. Looking for advice in Ohio. Thanks
9. This is my day to work on this bike. It is new to me, an 86 with 20,000 miles. When I picked it up, it wouldn't idle without choke, but ran pretty good on the road without choke. I just replaced the 4 diaphrams and did the 2 ss washer mod on the needles. 1 of the diaphragms was completely seperated from the slide and all had a few holes. Now the bike will not run without choke and if I rev it it wants to die. Will not stay running without choke and backfires a little while running. I have to adjust the idle with the choke. Seems like its running too lean. Trying to synch the carbs but can't get it to go without the choke. The indicators on the carbtune are moving but don't seem to be too high up on the gauge. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Kevin
10. Stopped in a dealer a few days ago just to look around. Found an 86 VR with 21,000 miles stuffed in a corner. Unfortunately I took it for a test drive (dealer had to jump it). Made a lowball offer and now I own it. Anyway, it has some issues I need to fix. Bike will idle with choke on , although it pops a bit when cold. When it warms up, backing off the choke causes a slowing idle until it finally dies. Could this be clooged/dirty pilot jets and will Seafoam cure the problem? Seems to run great off idle and all the way to redline. Second, Class is dead. No display at all (on ACC). Looks like a loose airline has been ziptied up near the front of the plastic gas tank cover. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Now I need to sell my 84. Thanks Kevin
11. I decided to take the bike to work tonight. Weird thing happened. The starter turned the engine over just fine but it would not fire. Choke in, choke out it didn't matter. Finally, I shut off the ignition then turned it back on and tried it. Now it started right up and has started just fine three more times. Should I be concerned? Perhaps, the ignition switch is going bad? The bike is fairly new (07) with only 9,000 miles.
12. On the '83 when you try to start it cold, and set the choke lever to full on, it will not fire....ever.. unless I start to gradually reduce the choke setting while cranking. Then about half way off it fires but stumbles, and I need to go back up to full on to keep it running. I can also not give it any choke, and it'll fire right off the git-go, but need to give it full choke quick to keep it running. After it's runing with full on choke it only idles around 1500 rpm, but as it warms up it steadly increases to 3000rpm maybe more??. When it gets to 3 grand I start cutting back on the choke until it's around 2000rpm and then the r's will continue to climb back up to 3 as it get's even warmer. After about three of these 'adjustments' I can back the choke all the way off and it will idle at a 1000rpm. I've been living with this for a couple of years now. It's not something that causes any worry. When warm the bike starts and runs great. All diaphragms are perefect. Recent plugs and carb sync. Any ideas????
13. OK, this may take a while, but I'm going to start at the beginning and try not to miss anything, cause I'm not sure what may be important, and what isn't. Early this summer I was having some problems losing clutch fluid on my 2001 RSV. I kept topping off the master cylinder, but eventually I realized that it was leaking from the slave cylinder and ordered a rebuild kit. I ended up letting the bike sit for about 6 weeks before I had a chance to get together with my son (my semi-pro wrench) who lives in CA. We did the rebuild, got everything put back together, and wheeled it out of the garage to fire it up and take it for a test ride. It started right up, but after a short time running, I backed off the choke and it died. Started it again and the same thing. In spite of being plenty warmed up, it wouldn't run with the choke off. So I thought just a few cobwebs in the carbs, I'll take it for a run and blow 'em out. Well, in spite of running it for a mile or so through the neighborhood it never was able to run without the choke on. I wasn't sure what to do next, so I just parked it. Schedules were busy, one thing led to another and before long - it was November!!! Summers in Houston aren't the greatest time for riding, but this fall we've had some awesome weather, so I decided it was time to get the scoot running again. The battery had gone dead and would no longer take a charge, so I replaced it. (and purchased a Battery Tender) I figured maybe the air filters could use a look (why in the heck do they make them so hard to get to!!!) so I pulled them, and found that on one the plastic base had warped and had separated from the paper filter. Very bad! There were even a couple of leaves caught in it. No telling how much crud may have passed through and into the carbs. I replaced them with a new set of K&N's. Next I removed the tank and pulled the air boxes above the carbs. Nothing too obvious, but with no real desire to pull the carbs off, I decided to just spray them down real good with carb cleaner and put it all back together to see what I had. Putting those boxes back on it was another PITA! You can't see most of the boots and I'm really not sure I got them all seated properly over the carbs. Anyway, I went ahead and hooked up the tank and fired her up. Pretty much the same as before, or worse. It starts and runs with the choke on, but it never fully warms up to that higher revving state that it's supposed to reach with the choke on. If I turn the choke off it dies, and if I even begin to move the throttle, it also dies. And also, before I started all this I poured a full can of Sea-Foam into about 2/3rds of a tank of gas. My next thought is to look for the fuel filter to replace that. Any yes, the fuel pump clicks when I turn on the ignition and seems to be functioning. It will run at a low idle for as long as I want with the choke on. Like I said, I'm not really comfortable pulling the carbs off of the bike myself, so does anyone have any suggestions for a barely competent wrench, or should I just load her up and take her in to a pro? All ideas appreciated.
14. Hello fellow Venture's; My 2000 Venture will start easly with full choke, and while running on full choke when I twist gas, it wants to stall out. I can sometimes get an idle with chock off, but again when I try and give it gas it chokes out. Any suggestions.... Thanks for all your help.

Bad fuel pump?

My 86 Venture Royale has 32000 miles and has been running excellent, but now it won't run at all except at a fast idle and that with the choke full on. Is this a bad fuel pump symptom? Thanks for any advice.
16. Hello to all, been a while since I've been on here. My venture started bad this year, the floats were stuck, so i took the carbs off to clean. Did a tune up and synced carbs. But just an oddity, when I set the choke to full, the bike doesn't seem to bring the rpm's up as fast as it use to, it does run a little rough when cruising. I may try to sync the carbs again, but any suggestions? Thanks guys!!!
17. O.K. last Saturday morning when cold starting my 1986 VR, I left the Choke on too long and the engine stopped. Initially, the engine "fired right off" with the Choke on; however, after about 10 seconds with the Choke still on, the engine died and I have not been able to get it started since. It had been sitting for about three months with about two gallons of gas in it until three weeks ago when I rode it around the block several times. The battery has remained fully charged; however, it will not "fire off" after Saturday's episode with the Choke. The plugs and wires only have about 500 miles on them; however, they were installed about 2 years now. Tonight, I poured about 4 ounces of Seafoam in the gas tank hoping it might remove any varnishing, mositure, and/or trash deposits. I can smell gas after trying to crank it for about 15 seconds with the choke on. Question: I have read that to much Choke on a start up could cause the plugs to permanently foul out. Have you ever experienced this scenerio? Also, let me your thoughts and ideas what might be wrong. Thanks, Allen
18. Started my 2004 RSV this morning after about 6 weeks of inactivity. It's the middle of winter here and I've been away for 5 weeks, touring the warmer climes of this great country in my tin top. Pulled the choke fully out, gave the throttle a twist, let it rest, hit the starter and the engine popped in to life after about 8 cranks. Let her idle a little to warm up, then when I tried to ease the choke off it wouldn't go. Moves about 1/4" at the most, but does not throw back to fully off. I've poked, pulled and pushed from both sides without over-doing it for fear of bending or breaking something. I GOTTA RIDE! Anybody have any clues? :puzzled: Thanks guys.
19. OK guys, it has been a while, I had to step away from the "Brown Bomber" for a bit, it seems work and health issues got in the way. So, I am now recovering from a minor surgery and have a couple of weeks to do some minor (light) work on the bike and need as always your trusted advise. The bike is having the same symtobs as when I left off. It will run, but only with the choke on, It likes to ideal up by itself, and then after a bit just cuts off. Here is what I have done so far Rebuilt carbs to include new dia's and choke dia's as well, and yes the small "o" ring is in place. New fuel lines, filter, and cleaned tank New Plug wires, boots, and plugs Check and shimmed valves #1,#3,#4 (140+/-) all good PSI, #2 a little weak (90+/-) (these numbers are from memory, but they should be close, main point is #2 is weaker then the other 3) Sync carbs by ear to the best of my ability Removed YCIS and Plugged all ports (except #2 for Vacumn thingy a giggy) - techo term I figured I would pull the TCI open and check it as I have read others had done and bake it. The bike has been in FL for most of it's life and I am sure the humidly has surely gotten into it by now. Is there a thread showing the location, removal and tips for checking/cleaning/repairing/drying this thing out? Any suggestions and tips on any of my symptoms would be greatly appreciated:missingtooth:
20. First let me say that I am not the originator of this information. While at Don's maintenance day, one of our members was running around with a pair of needle-nose pliers adjusting the carb linkage tabs on various bikes. I am very sorry that I do not remember who this was, as I was concentrating very hard on syncing carbs and trying to keep from wilting in the heat! I did hear enough about it while he was working on a bike next to me that I remembered to check my own bikes when I got home. Glad I did. So let's get the real person identified here so he gets proper credit! Background: Our chokes are really just an enriching circuit that makes the bike run rich while the knob is pulled out. If you look under the tank at the choke knob, you can easily see the linkage and how it moves. In this first picture you can see that linkage on the left side of the bike, and just above the throttle spring you can see the tab the goes up to engage a brass plunger: Here is a closeup of just that tab and plunger. You can clearly see how the metal tab is touching the inside shoulder of the plunger, forcing it all the way closed when the choke knob is pushed in. This is the correct position for the tab when the choke is closed: As you begin to pull out the choke knob, those tabs move through that notch and begin to push against the head of the plungers to pull it out of the carb, activating the enriching circuit and making the engine run better when it is cold. The free play afforded by the notch probably just makes the bike less sensitive to slight position changes of the choke knob. Those pictures were from my 07 RSV, and all four choke tabs looked fine. Now here is a picture of what I found on 3 of the four carbs on my 05 RSV: Besides the fact that it is dirty and nasty, notice how the tab is touching the head of the plunger while the choke is supposed to be off. At the very least this is not ensuring the plunger is all the way in, and worse, it is probably actually preventing it from closing. In that case, the result could be poor fuel mileage, rough idling in the heat, fouled plugs, etc. Those tabs are very soft metal, so if any of yours do not look right, just use a pair of needle-nose pliers to slightly bend the tab to rest up against the inside shoulder of the brass plunger when the choke knob is all the way in. If you have the Yamaha chrome carb covers on your bike, you will need to remove them to see all four tabs. I do not yet know how this fix has affected my fuel mileage, but I will report back after I have had a chance to run a tank or two through it on the open road. Goose
21. Kbay And I Have The Same Venture. Same Color, Same Year, Etc. No Not Totally. We Both Noticed His Choke Pull Is On The Left Side And Mine Is On The Right. Mine Having Come From Louisiana(small Third World Country), Could Be On The Wrong Side As The Antenea's Were Backwards Too. Anybody Else Have The Choke On The Right Side?
22. OK so since the weather has been crap here so far, the old gal hasn't been used much this year. In fact according to my gas log, I filled her up last A MONTH AGO! She has become a bit hard to start from cold of late: She doesn't seem to want any choke till she fires then likes about half way for about 3 or 4 mins, and then stumbles if I don't take the choke off but runs and idles fine so long as I do. The battery is brand new, and I have 4 guage battery & starter cables installed already. The starter clutch still needs replacement but is less of a problem since the new battery went in. It was approx 15 deg C last evening and 5 deg C this morning and she gave me exactly the same problems at both temperatures in her nice dry garage. Well I have ordered up 160ml SeaFoam / tank of fuel STAT, for the next few tanks. All good stuff, lots on hand. While riding along though, I thought perhaps I should splurge on some new plugs for the old gal too. Seems to me I have read here that there are some super platinum, forked electrode etc plugs that these bikes really like. Whats the consensus guys, what are the best plugs for these old bikes? What would make her real happy ? Thanks, Brian H.
23. when i got my 1984 venture from my father in law. he told me not to choke it or the plugs would fowl almost instantly. i am quite sure this is because it is running to rich. this could be caused by dirty carbs correct? jets maybe. Also when idling it mifires every 5 or so seconds out of the left exhaust could this be because of dirty carbs too? it runs perfect when your riding and come to a stop idles good. so im just wondering where i go now i need my choke i dont like taking the tank cover off and sprayin panther piss in to get it started when its cold lol also what is the exact process of taking the carbs off i know take the side fairings off and filter box but does it have intakes u just unbolt or what? i want to leave them all togather thanks
24. just got my 01 Venture 1 week ago with only 1,900 mi on it. It has been setting out side under a cover for 5 years - that's a crime in my book!previous owner rode it 4 times last 2 years. said he had it dealer serviced march 06 and again in march 07. fluids are fine I put new battery, new plugs, it would not start. dumped old gas and new high octane, by-passed fuel filter, fuel pump works. pulled carbs and cleaned corrosion, cleaned and blew out all jets, needles, orifaces. first try and it started right up!! can accelerate if choke closed But quits if open choke the least bit. But the right front cyl (#4?) is cold. Should I pull the carbs again? never did find anything broken or clogged in carbs, but all the brass was tarnished from moisture intrusion I presume. Anyone can you please help me out here? Very anxious to get it running!!
25. I left My House early AM yesterday, with a little over a half tank of fuel, took the gal a few to run right and a bit to get her started, but she cleared up in a few minutes and went on. Now like i said I was going on a ride , and my ride was taking me to Urbanna Virginia, for a PGR mission. well that half a tank of gas didnt last no time at all, all in all about 47 miles. and since it was dark out and the sun coming up, i was holding back on the right hand , and not seeing just how cold i could make myself feel. The choke was off , and even after stopping her for a half hour rest stop i didnt need the choke to start her. no black smoke out the back.... so can i figure on her using lots of go juice on cold days, or should i have her looked at.
