  1. Is there a way to adjust the rear brakes on a 2nd Gen? I've checked my manual and searched here, I can't find anything on rear brake adjustment. When pushed on, my brake pedal goes right to the bottom with very little braking. I've checked the pads, lots of pad left. Only have 10,700 kms on them. Thanks in advance.
  2. I am ready to surrender and take the scoot to the dealer. I have checked air filter, new plugs, checked for exhaust leaks, adjusted idle mixture screws, can of seafoam with High octane gas, thought I had fixed the problem, rode to daytona, and its' back?? The bottom left pipe ( I have a 99 Blvd. 4 piper) is still popping at decel and idle. It absolutely drives me out of my mind. THIS IS ONLY ON 1 FRICKIN PIPE !!!!!!!!!!!, the bike has always run great until about 2 or so weeks ago. I really doubt that this is a carb sync issue, and the bike runs great when cruising. Any more last minute suggestions before I break out the wallet. Also, does any one know where I can download a repair manual for a 99 standard? :confused07:
  3. We were in town and got a call from ADC he was there too. So we just had to all go to DQ, while he checked out the SS bike. Margaret
  4. We were on the return trip from MS and about 50 miles from home, doing 76 in the left lane - all of a sudden - the bike no-go no-mo. I thought at first the bike was out of gas, but switching to reserve made no difference. And the last I checked I had 3/4 of a tank. So as I eased over to the shoulder with a dead engine, I shut it off and turned it on again - nothing. Once stopped, I checked the battery - all connections were good and the battery was at 13.5v. All the fuses, including the 30 amp main checked out as well - nothing blown. I had no dash lights, headlights or turn signals with the key ON, but on ACC - the radio worked. I suspect it is the ignition switch, in part because when I had gassed up earlier and was pulling out from the station, I noticed the speedo, clock and fuel gauger were not working. I shut it of and turned it on and POOF - they all worked. Odd, I thought - but everything seemed OK. Then as I was going down the road, a couple times I felt a lack of of power - like she was missing or something. Then maybe 50 miles from home - she died. So the question is - is there a "brain box" on these bikes that could be out? Or is the ignition switch the most likely culprit? Or is there a bad connector or wire that commonly comes loose? I remember reading something on the site here about these switches going funky for other members. And if it is a bad switch - for those that have had it replaced - what is the cost range I can expect? (just so I can decide which arm & leg I can live without) And, as luck would have it - I broke down on Hwy 151 N - directly across the street from the Honda/Kaw dealer, and the owner happened to be in the shop on Sunday and came over to see if he could help. Not wanting to disassemble the bike completely on the side of the road, with a storm moving in, he went back and got his trailer and loaded my bike & trailer and put it in his shop. I'm awaiting the diagnosis from them today. Nice guy - he went out of his way for us. Beaver Dam Honda/Kaw for anyone nearby the area - if their mechanics are as good as the customer service the owner showed my wife & I - I'll drive out of my way to give him some business again. On purpose next time. So - useful insights, please - from those that have experience this issue.
  5. Besides making sure you LocTite the shift lever bolt, you should make sure you have properly lubed the pivot. I noticed the shifter seems considerably more sloppy on my 05 with 40,000 miles than my 07 with 13,000. When I pulled the shifter off, I noticed wear on the pivot just to the rear of top center. It was also pretty dry. There is a grease groove in the middle of the pivot, and my 07 did show it had once been packed. I bet the shifter on the 05 wouldn't be near as sloppy had I checked this long ago. Note that this IS listed on the periodic maintenance chart in the Owner's manual! My bad for not having properly checked it sooner. The shop used to just use a spray lube like a thin white grease on this point as well as the kick stand and brake peddle, so maybe I'll get them to fix it under warranty. Goose
  6. My CB started acting up on my 99. THe other evening it worked but I could not hear anyone, but they could hear me. Then it started working again. The next day it seemed to cut in and out on certain bumps. I removed the trunk checked all the connections and still had the problem. Removed front fairing checked all the wires again. I put Dielectric grease on all the connectors, zip tied the cables. Still could not isolate any particular wire as the cause. I even removed the CB and the Main controller (I believe this is what is in the front fairing). Cleaned the ground wire and presently it is working, but have not had a chance to test it on a ride. Did I miss any connectors under the tank ? Anyone have a similar problem ? If so did you fix it and how ? Brad
  7. I am at a buddies place trying to help him out. He has a 99 RSV. Had his bike idling and all of a sudden it stopped. Now he has no power. No lights,,,, nothing. Checked battery and it is fully charged showing 12.9 volts. Disconnected ALL accessories. ZIP, NOTHING. HELP! What should I be looking for??? Thanks Thor (Greg)
  8. I think I may have a hole in one of the pipes on the rear header so I need to take it out to take a look. What's the easiest way to remove it? I have removed the collector but didn't want to start needlessly disassembling the top half of the bike before checking to see if someone found an easy way to get it out. I have checked the manual and the site but haven't ran across anything yet. Thanks for the help.
  9. If anyone has used a string to align the rear wheel on your dirt bike (or any chain drive) you will know where I am going. Have had the 04 for about a month now and it always felt like it was pointed a hair to the left going down the road. I just put a new set of Venoms on last week and had everything apart. Even pulled the drive shaft for a check. Every thing looked good, carefully re assembled, axles straight, nothing tweaked, still felt like something was off. Today I did a check (see attached diagram) and sure enough the front wheel is about .4" to the right. Just to make sure I was on the right track I rolled the bike to a different spot on the tire and checked again. Same reading. I balanced the wheels myself and the tires run remarkably true with the wheel. Then I checked the old Vstar and go figure, it is dead on. Bike has never been dropped, no damage what so ever. Can't see any way to adjust. Adding a shim between the drive shaft tube and dif. housing would be moving it the wrong way. Do I just have a bent bike??
  10. So now that the power plant is back in after the second gear issue, I start up the scoot to hear it run and check out that the tranny is humming nicely. Replaced clutch basket with one that is not broke, used the same fricton plates that were in there from last year, then brand new, and now I discover that the clutch will not release. Checked for air in the clutch lines, again and again and for sure there is nothing but fluid there, handle feels good with very little play. Took apart the whole clutch assembly again and again, checked and re-checked, all seems good. Started 'er up and let it get warm and tried again, no luck, so now I'm typing my way to a solution, hopefully. Any bright ideas? No extra parts in the coffee can yet at this point.
  11. I'm planning to replace the brake caliper seals on my 84 Standard and when looking up the part numbers on Yamaha's website it shows "part # 31A-W0047-00-00 Quantity 2 " for the rear seal kit. I checked Flatout's and it shows the same thing. Anyone know why it shows 2 sets for the rear caliper? but only 1 set for each front caliper. Thanks
  12. I should get an award honoring the level of stupidity I have managed to attain without the help or influence from any outside source. I went out to the shop this morning to finish putting plugs and plug wires on my bike. (I had done one yesterday.) I was hoping to get it done in time to go to afternoon church service at 2:00. So anyway, having removed the side covers, top cover, battery, tie wiring back all the wires that were in the way, the battery box, the 2 little chrome covers behind the horns, and the horns and having wrestled the solenoid away from the battery box, I changed the plugs and plug wires. Put everything back together and hit the starter. Nothing....nothing. OK, what did I not hook up. So I take it all apart again and retrace my steps to see if I had left something off. Everything looked fine. Got the multimeter and checked everywhere I could think and could see that I had voltage on the battery side of the solenoid but not the starter side. I checked the ignition wires where they go together prior to the solenoid and discovered I was getting .5v when I hit the button. Sumpin serious wrong here. I cleaned all the connections I could find and put it back together. Nothing....nothing. OK, took it back apart and checked all the fuses, more wires, everything I could think of. (again) After a couple of hours I said the H*** with this. I buttoned everything back up and decided to call it quits for the time being. I was standing there staring vacantly at the bike and thinking nasty thoughts about this bike and was starting to dredge up visions of myself throwing gas on it, followed by a match, and then riding off on a new bike, when all of a sudden my vision snapped into focus on the kill switch. WHAT?? WHAT!! I don't believe this!! I walked over, flipped the switch and hit the starter and it fired right up!!! Since I never use the kill switch, I must have accidentally hit it while I was working. How could I have not checked that to begin with? How stupid!! and before you say: "that ain't so bad, could of happened to anyone." I will tell you that this isn't the first time this has happened to me. I should KNOW to check it first.....man....I need a drink!!!
  13. Folks, I know this topic has been brought up just recently so I'd like to share what I've found out while servicing my 02 Midnight. When I checked my valves just recently I decided to remove the carbs and disassemble and clean them up while I was in there. It was the then that I saw that there appeared to be some significant cracks starting in the intakes. So I then decided to replace them all since I plan to keep this bike for a long time to come now that I have it where I want it. But as many of you know, I like to take items apart to see what's inside. so this is what I did to one of the intakes, of which I have attached a picture to show how far the inner aluminum base goes up. My intakes are about 6 years old now and even though there were cracks starting to form, I can tell you that in the end they were all superficial. The rubber on these intakes (above the aluminum base that is molded in) is so thick that I seriously doubt that a crack will make it all the way through. But I could be wrong, especially on older intakes. As a special note, when I was finished installing the new intakes, I checked the compression before I put in new plugs. This engine now has about 90k on it and all cylinders produced right at 180 lbs, which I thought was pretty good. Hope this is enlightening, Rick
  14. I'm new to this site, but to riding ( 30 + yrs). In April ' 07 I purchased a new '07 Venture. After today I still have less than 5,000 miles on it. I've begin to notice a little unsteadyness in the front end lately. This may be hard to explain exactly what I'm talking about, but I'll try; I've checked tire pressure and its OK. There is also zero pressure in both forks. When riding the bike and going into a curve (lean) I noticed that the front end feels ( scince I can't think of any other word ) wobbely, however the bike maintains complete stability when I let go the bars ( on the straight-a-ways of corse ). When I got home I checked the front end by shaking it back and forth. It seems to feel that the front forks are some what like noodles and that the wheel is lagging behind the handle bars. I've checked thr steering as best I could and there are no signs of any loose parts. I'll recheck the tire pressure again, but if anyone else has experienced this problem and there is a fix, please let me know.
  15. When I installed my new back tire I measured the tread depth. It was .280 of an inch. I just checked it after 3500 miles and it now measures .215.
  16. I have the new 2007 Star Venture. I have about 12,400 miles on it. Its sitting on a lift, waiting for a new drive shaft. Noone in the U.S. had the part, it had to ordered from Japan. Anyone else having a problem with their bike. The wife explains" the wheel fells like its sliding", mostly around turns. she kept questioning the tire pressure. Now we kept hearing a whinding sound as the bike slowed, loudest sound came, down shifting into third gear. like a WUAAAAA sound. I brought the bike in a fewtimes, because, it felt like to front end was hopping. I had the front end checked 3 times, like the pads were rubbing, after a while 4000. miles we had the rear brakes checked, still nothing. The service rep, rode the bike after changing the gasket on the left side of the bike from a leak. He herd the noise, and brought the bike back in and removed the tire, and checked the drive shaft. sure enough, the teeth were chipping off, and the threads were rounding off., upon dropping the rear end oil, we found small peices of metal on the magnet. so we ordered, evey part connected to the shaft, for replacement.
  17. I know that the 2nd Gen people can't understand this:stirthepot:, but I was going so fast last night that the left side vent grill blew off!!!! I looked for it on the highway today, but no luck...I did find some black plastic pieces that may have been it!!! I checked on ebay and didn't see one...anyone have one on a parts bike they are willing to sell? I hate looking at the empty hole!
  18. I installed the Harley light fixture to my Venture yesterday and it works great and looks great. But my main brake light does not work now. I checked the bulb and it looks ok and I checked the wiring and every thing is wired correctly. I’m going to get a new bulb later today, but was wondering if anyone has any idea’s. Thanks, Everette
  19. Hi. New guest here. I've only owned this bike a few weeks (great machine) and the sidestand switch failed leaving me without power at 70+ in the fastlane of the local freeway loop in rush hour.... My vision is squat in low-light conditions but once home (and without thinking) I started hunting for the relay for the sidestand switch and managed to short something (there was a spark) while moving the forward fuse block (with the newer fuses - not the fuse block on top of the battery). I have a '91 Venture and believe me I'd love some advice on just what could be wrong, tracing the problem down, etc. I've got a volt-ohm meter and have checked the battery, fuses, fuse block connections and ground points. So far nothing. I've checked for voltage in lines that should not have it according to the wiring diagram in my service manual and again have found none thus far. As the switch has no effect (no idiot or instrument lights - nothing works) I am assuming at this point the problem is in the hot lead to the switch or the control unit (ughhh) hhheeelllllp thanks to all Positive feedback - I love this machine. Mine has a lot of miles but runs great and pulls hard. I've thoroughly enjoyed it thus far. indy
  20. Anyboby on this board sell this kind of stuff? You can email me directly at ...LRAYVICK@cox.net. I think one site I checked had them for maybe $6.50 plus shipping. I also may need a few other items. I also posted this on the watering hole.
  21. Wife and I went for a ride today. Stopped a half hour from home and filled the tank. Went out a little later to put the bike away and no gas. I have checked the lines on the filter and fuel pump and they appear fine. Then I checked the main feed line coming from the tank to the fuel pump and it seems fine. The line coming off of the reserve tank appears fine. The overflow tube is dry at the end. I see no gas on the ground and I do not smell any gas and the wife didn't smell any while riding. Everything I have checked seems fine. I haven't removed the tank yet. What haven't I checked or where do I go from here?
  22. I have an '83 standard.....the clutch resevoir (sp) ran dry so i put more fluid in and she was back to normal in a flash. That lasted about 15 miles the when I pulled in on the clutch there was NOTHING again. After I limped her home I checked the fluid level and it looked fine. Is there a place to bleed that system? Maybe I got some air in there messin' with things.
  23. Ok guys my 83 is running great just turned 73,000 mi,Coming home from a meet & eat.My oil light came on while going down hwy.pulled over and checked level which is good - full of oil mobil one 15w50.I started back down the road no light untill about 10 mi it came back on,stop and checked? everything seems ok,light stayed on all the way home 15 more miles or so.Watched temp gauge too ,did great cool running in 90F heat.So am I missing something or just replace level sensor for oil and go on.Engine has no knocks or weird sounds like a second gen.I had to put that in . You know someone will make a crack at the 83 Venture. buddy
  24. SWR meters are harder to find than hens teeth around here. I finally had to pay premium price from Radioshack. When I set it up with my scoot, I got >3, so I took the rubber cap off and shaved 1/4th inch off the end of the antenna whip. Funny, it just looked like nothing but fiberglass, but when I checked it, it measured 3 again. It seemed so krazy that I did it over and over again, so I started cutting off the rubber cap and the measurement came down - not by much but at least
  25. Coming home from work yesterday my radio cutoff and then came back on, it did this 4 or 5 times till it cutoff completely. When I parked the lights where very dim and the radio was still off. I cut it off and tried to crank it, the battery was dead. I had the battery checked out and it was ok. Last week I road in a lot of rain, could there be something shorting out?
