  1. The book says the steering neck needs to be 'repacked' after so many miles (16,000 miles) My 06 Midnight bike is 'way' over that (no warranty) and I'm wondering if this is one of those checks not really required as it's rare to find anything wrong or is it something you really should have checked out after a certain while..? I ask as my bike started to demonstrate a strange wobbly-wop in turns at gentler turns and speeds.. nothing to scare you but something you can feel in the bars.. I had the front wheel checked for scalloping (low tire pressure) but this is not the case.. Would this be an indication I should have those bearing repacked and checked? The bike will be up on jacks soon so it would be an opportune time to do some 'front end checks' if there were any to check for this? Cheers
  2. My 1999 RSV started missing the other day. I checked the plugs and I ran seafoam thru it. I checked the spark at the plugs. The fuel pump isn't clicking. It has been doing this ever since it started missing. Is there a fuse that goes to it and if so where is it located? Where is the relay to it and how do you check it? thanks tim
  3. Hello all, This is my first forum and I am proud to say that I made an 1987 Venture Royale my first bike. The bike was purchased from a friends cousin. I bought it last year (2008) however, I have had nothing but problems with it. The bike sat for 5 years in a garage. When I started it up for the first time, it ran rough but I (and the owner) figured it just needed a tuneup from sitting. Long story short, my buddy found it running on 3 cylinders. He found a couple pinholes in the "bladders"? on top of the carbs. I ended up buying 4 new aftermarket carb "bladders" and they were all cleaned and setup. NEXT PROBLEM: THE ONE THAT IS FRUSTRATING ME AND MY MECHANICAL FRIENDS. I bought a brand new battery and made sure it was charged correctly, etc. PROBLEM: I can ride the bike everyday for about 3 - 5 days then I have to recharge the battery. My electronics buddy has used a voltmeter all over this bike and we can't find anything wrong. He has checked the grounds.......everything. The problem is that it is so intermettent. Sometimes I get even 5 or 6 days before I have to recharge the battery. He checked everywhere to see if something was "on" slowly draining the battery when the bike was turned off. He found nothing. The voltmeter on the bike and handheld voltmeter shows it charging around 13-14 volts when the bike is running. One person said "maybe the voltage regulator is screwed and only working sometimes?" IF ANYONE CAN GIVE ME SUGGESTIONS OR POSSIBLITIES WITH THIS ELECTRICAL ISSUE, I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT. I am really getting bothered by this. My wife is telling me to "get rid of it" but I like the bike too much when it's actually running properly. PROBLEM 2: Yesterday the throttle stuck almost wide open. I used the kill switch to shut it down. My buddy checked the throttle cable and found it being held together by 1 strand where it connects to the carb. TIME FOR A NEW CABLE. Thanks AltonKen
  4. in the rain a few days ago on my way home from work I heard a loud POP! and the lights went out when i got home i checked and sure as heck the fuse was shot so i changed it out and then i had high beams only so the other day i had some time after work and checked out the simple stuff in the headlight bucket all ok fuse block ok and wires i could see without getting into the harness so i took it to the dealer after work yesterday and sure as heck it was the dimmer switch went POP so they wired my lights for the passing lamps to stay on all the time and my bright too! cool eh so now i have lights and they had to order a new dimmer FREE! to me as the little 05 Vstar classic is still under warranty yup im lovin it today:smile5: Dray
  5. One of my speakers was shot on my 90, so I replaced them with a new set. I got everything back together and the radio was working great. A few days later I went for a several hour ride and again the radio was working great. But after I pulled the bike into the garage the radio just stopped working along with the cassette and CB. I checked all the fuses under the battery cover and they were all good. Is there a hidden fuse somewhere else that I should check? Or is there a wire that might have come loose? Thanks, Al
  6. Ok Gang here is the scoop.. As most of you know I had my Bike converted to a trike a few weeks ago. ALSO had a now triple tree installed for a 6 deg Rake. (GLAD I DID THAT) Anyhow... I first got it back.. and was riding around town to get used to her then I put Cruse on and it worked for about a mile or so... (kicks Off) Now more time passes I have been riding longer and farther now. Been a Gas BTW... Now when I activated the cruise control while riding. the blue light goes on and it is waiting. I HIT SET and it would go into it HOLD.. As of couple days it will only last a 10th of a mile or so.. Today.. Get all ready to test it again.. blue light is ready.. hit SET and Nothing. The RES/SET lights just keep trying over and over again.. until it will shut down itself. I am thinking it had something to do with the Rake Kit Added. I have an email sent off to the owner. I am sure he will be good for it.. nice folks. But I just didn't want to deal with bring it there and taking the day off and waiting all day.. thought maybe if one of you geniuses might think it could be something so simple . I talk the installer and they say they didn't remove anything. yeah whatever. and he did check the Cruise. It worked FINE until I got it back.. This is there first install on this Kit all went well and I am very pleased with there work , but I do not have Cruise anymore. HELP???? (bike only has 10,700 miles on it.) I also have checked both lower fairings all looks good there. I also have checked the speedo. Also have checked all the switches as for as how they look going in and out etc. have not checked behind the fairing yet. Gatta have somthing to do with the rakeing I bet. (ANY IDEA"S) Thanks for reading, Jeff
  7. After rebuilding the #2 carb cause it was dumping fuel out the overflow got the bike running and everything adjusted went to go for a test ride and less then a 1/2 mile from the garage it died like it ran out of gas got it back home and checked the fuel pump relay and power to the relay and checked resistance of the #2 coil little higher than the tolarance, the pump runs for the start up 5 seconds but not much fuel comes out, maybe 5 cc at the most, How much fuel should it be pushing? enough to get pressure to the carbs?
  8. Radio won't come on and just wanna make sure I have checked all that needs to be checked before going to dealer. - - -Radio fuse {10 amp} is not blown. - - -All connections are okay. It is my assumption that since those two things are spot on; then, the radio is kaput, there is nothing else to check and it is time to take the booger to the dealer.....Right?
  9. It is supposed to be down to around zero F here in the next couple of days so yesterday evening I thought I had better check the antifreeze in all my vehicles. The first thing I had to do was run over to Walmart to buy another checker as I could not find the one I had. I figured as I was there I would buy a gallon of antifreeze. I still can not let myself buy the 50/50 mix and pay almost the same price as regular. And, I always keep a gallon or so of distilled water on hand. Everything checked good, but one of my Maximas was almost 2 quarts low. I must have a leak somewhere, but I have not noticed it marking it's territory. So, when the weekend gets here and the really cold temperatures, I will just snuggle down and stay in. RandyA
  10. hey guys hows it hanging got a problem with this 83 venture xvz12 it dosent start Ive already whent through and checked every thing 1 cleaned all connections and plugs 2 new tci old one was shot but it started the bike but only ran on the front two cylenders 3 cleaned the carbs 4 tested the pressure sensor checked ok 5 new spark plugs 6 new battery now the thing its not doin is getting a spark when cranking but when you turn off the key its gets one spark on both front cylenders i jumped the ing switch un pluged and ran a wire on both connectors same thing im running out of ideas here so any help would be appreciated Thanks, Kenny
  11. Hey guys, hope you all had a great week! Did all the testing of components, cleaning cable ends, ETC, we discussed earlier last week. Everything checked out! I tested the battery with a standard auto battery load tester, it tested good. SO, after everything else checked out, I took the battery to a friend that has a truck shop and put a 24 volt load test on it, the meter dropped to BAD in 2 seconds. He thought it was a intermittent short in the battery and it took the extra heat to finally burn it into?.?.?... What ever, I put in a Odessey PC 680 and it fired off like new again! Drove all over town and made several stops, NO problems!! Battery Outfitters in Rogers, Arkansas is a dealer if anyone close to them ($95 out the door). Most dealers charge about $121 delivered to your door. Thanks again for all the help on my problem!!! Gary C Ft Smith, Ark area
  12. What pressure is everyone running in their rear shock? Does it have to be checked and replenished just like the tires?
  13. Does anyone know where I can get a drivers backrest, non studded, for a stock seat for a 08 Venture..............or do they even make such a thing? I checked Yamaha's site but couldn't find one. Any advise?
  14. My charging system on my 83 went berserk about a month ago. Suddenly my volt meter dropped very low while riding. Got back to my shop and the next day I checked the voltage on each of the white wires while the bike was running and it was very erratic. I ordered a new stator and last weekend I got around to putting it in. When I pulled the old stator out it looked like new so I ran the tests like the manual says. Checked the white wires against each other and they came up with the correct .4 something ohms and the short test showed that the stator was good. I put the bike back together using the old stator and then found that the plug from the reg/rec going to the harness was badly melted. Not the white wires from the stator but the red ones going from the reg/rec to the harness. I put on a new plug from an old harness and I installed another reg/rec that I had. I started the bike and it charged normally. A couple days later The voltage dropped way down again so I turned around and was heading home when suddenly it started charging again. Now last night it started discharging again so today I checked all of the plugs, fuses and such to no avail. Before tearing apart again I would like to make sure the battery is not bad. It is one year old but since it is sealed and no acid, How do you check it? Any other ideas? Dick
  15. My 2006 RSTD recently developed a clicking sound at approx. 4000 miles. I first noticed it when backing bike out of garage with the engine off. When slowing down for a stop I noticed it again. It appears to be coming from the rear of the bike, but it does not sound like a dragging pad. I checked gear oil, and it was full. Anyone have the same noise. Missed a beautiful weekend because of concern of doing damage. I did install a Barons rear lowering kit when I first got the bike, but I checked and everything is tight.
  16. I've been having a problem with my '99 Venture wandering or darting side to side when hitting uneven roads or bumps. Yamaha checked the suspension and said it looked ok. I still feel something is going on. Any advice on what could be checked to diagnosis what could be happening? How do you check the front forks for problems besides leaks. Is there a way to check the spring tension from side to side?
  17. I have a 2000 mm edition. My front speakers quit working first then my left speakers in my headsets stated buzzing and then quit.I split the fairing and checked all of the connections. No improvements.I priced a new radio for almost $1000.00 Any suggestions,Fixes,Etc.....
  18. Hi all, I've been sculling about around here for a few months now and I have learned quite a lot about my bike. So now I have a question about my 84 VR. When I first bought it, the radio powered up but as there was no antenna I couldn't get any stations. The other day I finally replaced the antenna and now the radio will not even power up. I've checked the fuses and didn't see any blown ones. I haven't yet checked for power to the unit, don’t really know where to start. But seeing as the radio/cassette isn't working, would now be a good time to change it out to a more modern unit, one with a CD player? If so, what would you replace it with? Would a marine unit be a good choice? If I can get the old one working, does anybody know where I can get a new plastic cover for the cassette? I broke the corner off, trying to remove it one day. I then lost the piece before I could glue it back together. Thanks for all your help. I really enjoy visiting this place, and hope one day to be able to get to a rally, and meet a few of you. Bill
  19. I finally checked my CB antenna out this weekend and discovered I had just as much power going towards the radio as I did the antenna. No wonder it didn't work real well. Anyway I checked the radio with a good antenna on the truck and found about 2.5 watts output. So I am looking for a good place to buy another replacement for the bike. Does anyone have good information where to find a replacement? Probably will go with a Firestick.....
  20. I removed the PMS caps from my carbs last Saturday and turned then out 1/4 turn each. ( I also plugged the AIS and synced the carbs) I started noticing some popping on decel after that. This evening I checked the adjustment on each carb. They ranged from 1 3/4 to 2 1/2 turns out! I tried to adjust them by ear but I couldn't hear enough difference to do it that way. I wrote down the adjustments on each in case I needed to go back and then set them all to 2 1/4 out. The result: The bike started easier than it ever has and when I took it for a spin it seemed to be more responsive; more crisp. Anyone else have a similar experience? Do you think I'm close on the adjustment? Is there a better way to adjust them w/out buying a carb-tune or EG analyzer?
  21. \ Ok here is the story. My neighbor across the road who is a retired Gunny Sgt up in his mid 70s. Is always screwing with his computer changing things he knows nothing about then calls me up to come see whats wrong with his computer its not working right. Most cases I can fix it but this time Im stumped. What the problem is is no sound once you open the browser. I checked everything in internet options and it is all enabled. Sound works fine when browser is not open. So anyone have any Ideas where too look.\ thanks John
  22. I'm a newby so be gentle on me. I was riding my 99RSV home the other day (I've had it a week) and I was in the inside lane of a busy road and suddenly everything went dead. No lights no radio, no speedo etc. I managed to get into the susicide lane and stop at a light where there was no left and when the light change I pushed it to the sidewalk. I checked the Key the fuses and checked to determine what all was off. I had no headlight no trip meter, gas guage driving lights etc and therefore the bike would not start or run. Now I have not been putting my battery on a charger as it all seemed ok and I was riding it almiost every day. I was however running with full lights including the extra running lights on the front. Well I called a Tow truck and after about 20 minutes I rechecked my bike and I again had power. I was only 6 miles from home so I cancelled the tow and rode it home with the front running lights off. It was here that I became confused. If this was a short why could I now run the bike and if it was a battery issue why also. Another thing I do not understand is that now the emergency flashing lights are on and I don't know how they turned on or how to turn them off. I don't have the service manual yet (its ordered) so I am not sure what to check out or replace. I believe its a battery issue due to me not using the tender and running the extra running lights up front. PErhaps I shoud ditch the battery for a new one and use the tender on a regular basis since I do not know how old the battery is. What do you think? Replace the battery or look for other issues? How do I turn on and off the emergency flashers? Should I take the bike to the shop and have it checked out? IT seemed to be running excellent and this 99 doesn't even have any scratches nor did it have any blemishes anywhere. It looks a lot newer than its age. IF I take it to a shop what do I tell them to check out? Your assistance and input will be greatly appreciated. JB:Venture:
  23. Hi, I just bought a 1987 venture royale and have no head light or dash lights the dash instuments work. Checked fuse, bulb, any help? Thanks Chet.
  24. Hey y'all. My 2000 MMLTD (41,000 miles) accelerates just like it should under hard throttle going up through the gears. Seems to run great then. However, it vibrates (misfires?) when I try to accelerate at higway speeds like 50, 60,70, etc.. Acts somewhat like if you tried to accelerate in 5th gear running 20 mph. Shakes. I checked thoroughly and really don't believe it is anything in the drive train like the middle drive gear bearing or anything in the shaft or rear diff. From what I see using my timing light, I think my front two coils, wires, plug caps, whatever are the culprit. Took them out (such a pain) and did the resistance test on each item. All checked well within tolerance. Carbs are synched up perfectly. I've been wrenching for 37 years and am looking for the simple. Don't want to buy coils if not needed. Any body had any wires or wire insulation failures. Any ideas? Thanks. Rusty
  25. Last Friday, I got together with Rob and Charlie in Mississauga, and did my 2nd oil change, and synch'd my carbs. With the oil, we changed both oil and filter. I put in the Yamalube 20/50. The 3 of us checked the oil level, started the bike ran it, let the oil settle and left it at halfway on the sight glass. Very strange, I checked the level today with the bike level again, and now the oil is full on the sight glass. We put in 3.2 litres, as an estimate from the jug. Where the heck did the extra oil come from? We fully drained the crankcase, and removed filter. I don't see any oil dripping, but how could it be more full without adding any oil? Just one of those unexplained mysteries I guess.
