  1. I believe my radio controller is bad. I got caught in (2) bad rain storms Monday and my controller turned itself on and I can not turn it off. It was completely off and all of a sudden it came on, stuck on 87.7 FM. I can not change the channel or change it to CB, AUX, etc. Has this happened to anyone and if so what's going on? It can't be a fuse because it comes on when I start the bike. There is no sound coming out of the speakers. I don't believe the rain is the culprit but it's strange it started during the downpour. Any ideas???
  2. Just replaced my Metzler with Michelin Commander (size recommended by Yamaha). I am totally surprised by the difference in handling this change has made. I had to fight the bike to make a turn with my old tires. Now, I just have to think about turning and the bike is half way there. I also noticed a significant increase in adherance. I am very happy with this change. Now I have to wait and see how much mileage I will get out if them. JCB
  3. Does anyone have the recommended oil filter number and type of oil I should use for the first oil change (600 miles.) Also what type rear end oil to use Would like to change out tomorrow. This is for my RSTD 08. Thanks, Star4772
  4. I hate to do this, but here we go on another synthetic oil jag: So I took my new '09 RSTD to the dealer for the first service (they are also putting on the Flanders bars and lines but that is for another thread) So I asked the service guy if they could put synthetic oil in when they change the oil. He said they don't like to do that and went on a discussion on how it causes the clutch to slip and on "R6 motorcycles causes a ticking noise that sounds like the engine is coming apart". He told me if I insist they will do that but they don't like to because of all of the complaints. Plus he intimated that if I put synthetic in they would have to tear down the engine to find the problems it will cause and it will only be fixed by putting regular oil in. Any way I swear by synthetic, I have always used Mobil 1 in all my vehicles. I am planning on using Amsoil. I will probably go a few hundred miles on this oil then change it to the amsoil. 600 Mile service

On the 600 mile service how important do you think to have the dealer do it, or do it yourself, looks like going over bolts and nut and oil change and that is a breeze unless your old like me...Then becomes a challenge.. Also manual does not call for rear drive fluid to be change at 600 I think it better to drop it your thoughts.. Reason I'm asking this I might makea M&E that will put me over if I don't get to it before I leave, i'll be over no more than 200 miles.. I'm a real funny about doing it on time...
  6. Others have said it so well. The club and the forum and MD are all just plain special and I want to add my own personal thanks to Don and Eileen for all the obvious work to make MD so uniquely special. It is great to get to continue to meet members, especially at an event such as this. Also want to say that all the help from so many for my tire change job was enormously appreciated. Here are a few more pictures of this great event, starting with our rendezvous at bongobob's.
  7. Hello all, OK... It's Sat. and I'm about to start going through my new 1st gen VR (fluids, plugs, elec. system check, etc.) I started looking her over last night and found a few minor concerns, just minor mechanical and cosmetic but am having trouble finding links etc. so I will put my initial queries in this post and see what shakes loose. Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give. Mechanically for starters... I noticed the shift shaft (shifter input shaft if you prefer) has got some play, checked a couple other bikes around (not VR's) and they are solid. Is this normal for 81K miles, or is there a fix for this? I know the seal needs replacing, that's no biggie but the play has me worried. Leaking oil a little from top of lft rear cyl. appears to be cam cover gasket and half moon, any little oddities to beware of here? Will there be any problem switching to full synth on the oil change, or any oil change tips from the masters? Second... cosmetics: The windscreen is "peeling"? and kinda yellow, is there a fix or is this a new windscreen? Needs some odds and ends... side vent, reflector, etc. any good places to get these at a reasonable price? Finally... I'm perplexed, I've seen pics of the '86 VR with and w/o a lower fairing piece or "scoop". Is there a good reason why some have them and some don't? If possible... same as trim question, where can a guy find one at a reasonable price? Thanks for reading and indulging an enthusiastic new owner! Look forward to hearing from you all. Kelly
  8. Well, I did my 4000 mile oil change the other day. I went from the Yamalube to the Rotella T6 along with a Pure One Purolator Oil filter. So my oil weight went from 10w-40 down to 5w-40 and a full synthetic. I also added about 8oz of MotorKote. My whine is still audible at low speeds, but in 4th and 5th gear the whine is TOTALLY gone now. :-) I am very happy with it so far...so we'll see if it gets even better over time...but now my MOTORCYCLE sounds like a MOTORCYCLE in 4th and 5th gear!! Wally
  9. I noticed the front turn signals are running and turn but the back is not. What do I need to do so I can have it the same in the rear? Change guts or get new lights? star4772
  10. After synchronizing the carb’s within 10 mmHg (each column) using the Carbtune Pro (at an idle between 1,000 – 1,100 RPM) on a 2006 RSTD the engine idle then randomly fluctuates between 730 and 1750 RPM’s. Obviously, when this change in idle speed occurs the previous adjustment (in vacuum) to match all columns exceeds 10mmHg. You can adjust the idle adjust screw to change the engine idle speed but this adjustment does nothing to stop the idle speed from randomly changing. What could be causing this to occur? Thanks 2 Flights
  11. My troubles began about a month ago when I had an oil change and decided to try a synthetic by using Mobile 1 20w-50. My whine (which really didn't bother me) turned into a scream. I talked with the service manager and he grudgingly agreed to get me an "I" basket and we both agreed on going back to Dino. The factory tech suggested Yamalube (surprise) 20w-50. When I first drove the bike it seemed to be considerably better-the scream back to a whine and at a different pitch. A 100 miles later the whine is getting louder and so I decide to try Rotella 15w-40 and major difference. I'm beginning to believe it's the oil viscosity and will try 10w-30 at the next oil change (I've had 3 oil changes in the last 200 miles). It may not be just the basket but also viscosity. For the 1st 4000 miles I was using Yamalube 10w-40 and the whine didn't bother me. I had thought my troubles began when I went to synthetic, but I now believe it was because of the change to 20w-50. After I enjoy my bike again for a while, I may try synthetic again but at no higher than 40 weight-I think Amsoil makes a 10w-30. Something to think about!
  12. I have a new 130 /MT90HB series front tire in the classifieds for sale. I haven't even taken it out of the shipping wrapper. I don't plan on using it now since I decided to go with a rear designed tire up front on the trike. I can bring it to Don's MD for anyone wanting to do the tire change there, change it out for local buyers, or work out shipping arrangements. Larry
  13. Ignition timing – Check the timing and/or adjust, How to? Since I am in the process of doing some maintenance on my 06 RSTD (sync of carbs, installation of new plugs, oil change, lubrication etc, I thought I should also check or adjust the ignition timing. What are the procedures / guidance for doing this work? Where is the fuel filter located on the 06 RSTD motorcycle and how difficult is it to change this filter since I will have the fuel tank removed during this work. Are there any kits available for making this task any easier in the future? Thanks 2 Flights
  14. I need to check the valves on my 2008 Venture. Does anyone know where I can find the tool that hold the bucket down to change the shims? Any help will be appreciated.
  15. Just got back from the M&E, small turnout but great time great food anyways. Yanks outnumbered the Canucks for a change, 11 to 7!!! Here's some pix...
  16. ... as I'm noticing less and less new threads and/or posts showing up. Looks like we're finally shedding the crappy weather we've been having. Today, tomorrow, and Sunday all sunny and warm ... it is a welcome change from rain, cold, high winds, hail, etc that has been going on for weeks. I just "might" take the scoot out...after I clean it of all the cobwebs!!
  17. I was wanting to know if they make this piece the same for all the years between 83-93? The reason I am asking is because when I put my bike back together again and started riding it my front fender is hitting on the radiator cover and scratching my paint off. I have two different sets of these top and bottom and I don't know which set they used. I know where this is a front end crash that it could have very well bent the frame but I don't see where it is bent and I am hoping that I can just change these and change the rake on the front of the bike. I also notice when I ride it that it is hard to control at very low speeds. 1988 venture with no air in front forks
  18. How does everyone feel about having nitrogen put into tires. I have it in my truck tires and they don't seem to loose pressure with temp change. Now only check them when I have my oil changed. Now more local dealers and Quick oil change places are starting to cary nitrogen. One local Custom Cycle shop here also will put nitrogen in MC tires!!! Any feedback or thought on this.
  19. When I joined I had a V-Star 1100, but I sold it and now have an 05 RSTD. How do I change it where it shows up under my username?
  20. Clutch fluid is getting dark and glass window is full so I thought I would change it. Is there a tech article on how to change the fluid somewhere, I can,t seem to find it. Thanks.
  21. I got to tell you I'm not much for preventive maintenance. Sure I change the oil and plugs fairly regularly. Usually change the tires before the threads are showing but I never have changed the brake fluid or the fluid in the clutch. Just added as needed. I will also add I've been riding for probably longer then most of you folks be alive. Now, recently, last Thursday to be exact my clutch failed, no fluid. The slave cylinder was leaking big time. I ordered the repair kit and all the gaskets. Both cases on the left side have to be pulled to get at that berger. Long and the short of it is the cylinder housing was so pitted I don't think I could have honed them all out. Maybe but I decided I didn't want to have to redo the job a second time. To get to the part you have to take the exhaust pipes off the left side as well as the foot rest, the shift linkage and the hanger for the exhaust pipe. Morale of the story is a 20 minute clutch fluid change would have saved me 3 or 4 hours of labor and $150.00 in parts....... Hummm, maybe I'll change the fluid in the brakes while I'm waiting for the parts. BOO
  22. Hi guys. I have a 2005 Royal Star Tour Deluxe and have just ordered the Complete Bub 4 into 2 exhaust system for it. This system replaces the head pipes as well as the slip-ons. Bub doesn't say anything about re-jetting, but my dealership has told me that I don't need to re-jet unless i change the head pipes, which I will be doing. Because of what my dealership said, I contacted the guys at Baron, and they tell me that I shsouldn't have to re-jet unless I change the intake. I told them that the only change that I planned to make to the intake was to use K&N elements. They told me that even with the change of elements along with changing the whole exhaust, they still would not recommend re-jetting. Also, I can't seem to find a jet kit out there for a 2005 Royal Star Tour Deluxe anyway. I am a little un-easy with the conficting information. I trust the guys at Baron because they have alot of experience with the Royal Star, but at the same time, I want to be sure my mistress doesn't burn up from running to lean. Do any of you guys have a 2005 or newer RSTD with the Complete Bub 4 into 2 system? If so, what did you do or what has your experience been. Regards, Tony 2005 Royal Star Tour Deluxe
  23. Need to know the right way to change fork oil in my 86 venture ,what oil to use and how much ? Thanks.denny
  24. Okay I just got my venture and it is an 83. I am going to change the oil and I understand that the tranny shares oil with the engine. After reading a few things on the net I have decided, even if momentarily, to use rotella 15-40. I have used this oil before in cars and liked it very well but I do realize this application is not a car, open for thoughts.... In all my autos I run amsoil and like it very well but amsoil here is starting to get hard to get ahold of... but I do not want to change a bike over to a synthetic due to not knowing what kind of oil was used before and if it might change things with internals. If someone can give you some insight on this I would most definitely be happy. I am going to go with the E3 plugs and will let forum know how that goes. Now what I need is some mirrors. My bike came with no mirrors and the dealer wants 105 apiece. I found a place on line that advertises that they are half of what a dealer charges for used ones but gee there price was 145 a piece for a used one... I have seen a set on ebay for 40 but they were ensribed with the last owners pilot and navigator name.... i missed the auction but I guess I could of gotten new mirror for it.. Also is Yamaha the place to get the raditor hoses? Mine setup for quite a while so I feel real confident they will be go at any given time or when I get the furthest from home...lol..
  25. I have the rear tire off of the 89 for a tire change. the question is, what needs to be taken off the rim ?do i need to take the rotor off of the rim before it goes to the tire changer? This is the first time I have taken one apart for the tire replacement. And is there anything that gets done other than cleaning the hub and regreasing the teeth? Is there anything else in there i need to take apart and service?
