  1. So after putting the bike back together and synching the carbs I am finding that when riding it seems as though it is starving for fuel or air? I haven't really riden the bike except for around the neighborhood. so when I try to get on it it get up to about 4000 or so and it isn't going further any suggestions as to where to start? Carbs? fuel? Any advice is appreciated. Keep the rubber on the road..
  2. I have been reading several threads on exhaust poping on deceleration. I have had the problem since I bought the bike over two years ago. It seems to have gotten worse over the last few months, so I think I've decided to try to fix it once and for all. I have already run a can of Seafoam through the carbs over the last 2 tanks of gas. This has usually helped but never eliminated all the poping. This time it didn't seem to do much at all. I have checked for exhaust leaks and found none. I have done a carb sync with no change. My next step based on my reading is to clean/adjust the Pilot Jets. I have found several threads explaining in detail the proceedure. I am confident I can do the job except for one thing. I have a 96 RSTD and the carbs are different from the ones discribed for newer Ventures and RSTDs. The adjustment doen't look like it's accessable from the outside of the float bowl. I don't see anywhere there is a "brass cap" to remove to gain access for the adjustment. In the thread it says I should find it next to or near the float drain. I don't seem to see anything. At the YamahaPartsHouse.com site there is a parts breakdown that shows the difference when you look at a 96 compared to an 07 carb. The carbs on the 96 through 2000 look to be the same. Can someone help me with the proceedure and or location of the access.
  3. My new to me 2005 Venture had been sitting for a few months before I bought it and no suprise two of the pilots were blocked, cold headers after start up, I used some Seafoam at 50% mix but it was a long shot and did not clear the pilots. After reading Freebirds guide to carb removal and buying some 17.5 pilot jets I set to work, it was not as bad as I thought and took me about an hour to pull the carbs fit the 17.5 pilots and put it all back together. I set the pms to 2.5 turns out. She started right up with a little choke and did not need more than a minute to warm on choke, then I went for a test ride, ooooh nice and smooth at low revs, next task will be to balance the carbs but that can wait until next weekend.
  4. I have opened up my float bowls on my 96 RSTD to clean the pilot jets. I figured that I should check the float levels while I was in there. Unfortunatly the older 2nd gens have different carbs than what V7Goose has in the tech section. I have downloaded the manual and I can't seem to find a measurment. Any help would be appreciated.
  5. I’m looking for some help with a carburetor issue on my 83 VR. The carbs have been off, completely cleaned, jet blocks removed and cleaned, float levels set to factory specs and the low speed jets set to 2.5 turns. I have also installed the needle shim kit from Skydoc_17. Prior to the shim kit the mileage was about 38-39 mpg. The bike was running fine with no issues but the carbs had not yet been synced. Using a Morgan Carbtune, the initial setting showed the #2 carb (rear left) significantly higher than the rest. After adjustment, I was able to balance everything out using the proper procedure. Initial test ride indicated good performance with no issues. A couple days later I rode the bike to work allowing it to warm up only a short time with the choke cracked about 25%. When I took off from the house I left the choke on for about a half mile then shut it off. Within the next half mile the bike appear to be flooding out and dumping some gas out of the overflow on one of the left side carbs. After the engine warmed up completely the flooding seemed to diminish. At lower rpms in 5th you could smell some gas but it was not coming out of the overflow. When I got home I pulled the side covers and put the Carbtune back on to check sync and it was OK. I noticed that there was a slight amount of gas on the top of the #1 and #2 carbs that looked like it was coming out of the air cleaner boot. I then reset the sync to the original setting where the #2 carb was reading higher vacuum and took another test ride. No issues and the gas on the top of the carbs was gone. One thing that I have not done is replace the slider diaphragms. Could this be a contributing factor to this problem or is there something else I should be taking a look at?
  6. I've got an 83 venture for couple of years now. I cannot seem to get it running correctly, poor mileage ( 28 MPG) and back firing ( poping back through the carbs) slightly after making a corner then accelerating. After a pop or two it picks up and takes off. This is with both the original TCI and the new one I purchased last year. The bike normally runs better before it warms up. I readjusted the valves last year too. I thought it was running rich so, had the carbs off last week to reset the floats and install smaller shims in the sliders. Still run bad maybe a little worse. Put the original shims back in. Now I have a float stuck and gas coming out the overflow line. So I get to pull the carbs again, oh joy. Mainly, I also noticed that the #4 carb slider is not moving. Last week I pulled and cleaned the idle mixture needle valve and the two ports ( top and bottom sides of the diaphragm) into the throat. I set the idle mixture screws to 2 turns out. This week I reinstalled the original shims in the sliders I have reset the idle mixture screws in to 1 ½ turns out. Once I get up to about 4000 RPM it seems to smooth out. When I syn’cd the carbs I get about 9” vacuum on all cylinders at 1000 rpm. Is there some other internal thing I may be missing that would stop the slider from working correctly in just one cylinder? I pulled that slider again and the diaphragm ( no holes in it also about one year old ) is seated correctly and I have already disconnected the YICS some time back and plugged the lines. I also have not found and intake leaks.
  7. Got the carbs on, and was trying to adjust the mixture screws, which were turned all the way in. All 4 were stuck. Got 3 of them loose, but the last one rounded out the screw head. Pulled the carbs, took the one with the stripped screw off the rack, and got the screw out with an easy out. Reassambled my carbs and reinstalled. Now it seems to be running on all 4 cylinders. But I had fuel pouring out of the small plastic overflow on all 4 carbs (pic below). Gave them a few taps with a rubber mallet and 2 of them stopped, but 2 of them are still running a constant stream when the key is on and after the key is off.I am assuming that is because the bowl is still full. I am thinking stuck floats, or float level Any input is appreaciated.
  8. I have gas leaking from both over flow hoses on my carbs any suggestions or ideas all 4 carbs were rebuilt and synced and did not have this problem before I started putting everything back together:confused24:
  9. To start i have changed the oil and filter on my 99 RSTD put everything back together (was a partial basket case) replaced slave cylinder soaked clutch disc carbs were rebuilt by previous owner(friend) in which i did hear the motor run (which is 1 reason my wife bought it and it looks good) 7 months ago gas tank was off (ran on mason jar with gas) i dont know if fuel filter was changed and dont know where its located but i am getting gas to 2 carbs cause its leaking out of the overflow hose she turns over clutch pulled, in gear, stand up and in nutral but will not run any ideas i taped the bowls of the carbs on left side fuel still pours out od/check, eng light comes on when key is turned on then goes out when i hit starter both oil and temp light comes on and flickers while cranking i get spark to plug the one plug i did check. bike has 21452 mi on it so i know it did a lot of sitting and rotting away my friend started working on it in aug. 2011 as a aniversary gift from my wife in oct 2011 i just got it 3 weeks ago any help would be apriciative
  10. I hope im in the right spot. Hi all,I have been reading over the forum but couldnt find an answer so here goes. I have a 98 royalstar xvz 1300 and have had the carbs rebuilt or overhauled keep in mind I pulled the carbs off the bike and took them to my local yamaha dealer after installing them the bike runs great with 1 problem the overdrive light blinks 3 times when the key is turned on and when you start it the light stays on. I cant find anything in my clymers manual or the internet so any help would be most appreciated thanks Russ
  11. My "new to me" 05 RS Midnight Venture would not run off choke when I picked it up a month ago. After draining the old gas, new plugs and running a few tanks with seafoam through it it will now run off choke once fully warmed up. However it's still not right. Takes a long time before choke can be full off, idle is rough, can hear it missing and lacks power right off idle. Once rpm's come up a little it screams. Today I decided to pull the carbs for cleaning. Is there a write up on adjusting the floats (they all seem to be too high) and the mixture screws (they were set from 1.5 to 3.25 turns)? Also anyone have any tips on separating the carbs to make it easier to disassemble for cleaning? Thanks
  12. I just got my '87 adVenture and I've posted an intro on the intro section. I had a couple tech questions and was invited to repost them here. It is a 1987 Royale, 39k miles. Original paint about C- condition, will probably look B- when cleaned up and waxed. All plastic seems to be there with a little cracking on fairing. Slight tear on seat which is otherwise very comfortable. All systems seem to work, except battery may need changed. Had to jump to start, but massive corrosion on positive post. Seems to run okay on the center stand, a little rough on idle, like carbs unbalanced. Sounds pretty good otherwise. Battery is on charger now to see if it will hold anything. It has a curious probe that goes down into the middle top of the battery with a wire attached and there is what appears to be a diode or resistor in that wire as well. Front tire is almost new and the rear looks good. This bike was ridden, but not much recently. Immediate plans are to get the battery issue resolved, possibly replace the main fuse with a blade fuse, maybe even the glass tube fuse block with blade fuses. I use printed circuit board fuse receptacles and epoxy them together in an array to fit inside the original fuse holder. Then I think I'll put a set of fresh plugs in, make sure I have good voltage to coils, maybe balance the carbs. Do the valves on these need adjusted or are they hydraulic like the 'Wing? Is there a sticky post on trouble spots to take care of for new owners (other than basics of oil, tires, etc)?
  13. Does a 2012 Venture have a Caytilitic converter?Secondly are the Venture motors jetted lean for emmisions?Would richning up the carbs help in anyway.
  14. Ever been called a dumb a$$, and known it was true? Finally had a chance to work on my carbs last night. All the screws that hold the carbs together are rounded off, so its time to break out the dremel. I get half the head of the first screw cut off, and the screw is still tight. So I do the obvious: grab the hammer and screwdriver to chisel the other half of the screw head off. Not sure why that seemed a viable solution. So now I need a carb body. And according to my wife, some common sense. Oh well, we all make mistakes, some just cost more than others. Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
  15. I installed a set of Samson 29" turn outs on my 07" RSV. Should I consider rejetting the carbs?
  16. I have an 83 Venture Royale.I am having trouble with a lack of power once I reach 60 miles per hour.I took the carbs off and went through them.I have used sea foam to clean them.My question is how do you bench sync the carbs?I want to do that before I put them back on and sync the carbs. The bike sat for the winter and I am having problems for the first time. They have been acting up since I had to pull them to change the valve cover gaskets.Any advice would be great.Thanks.
  17. The previous owner had the carbs were synced by Muffinman last summer. She runs great but I feel she is eating too much gas. Does anyone have a write up of what I would need to do & what I would need to have on hand (equipment wise) other than a screwdriver to decrease the feul intake? Would the carbs need to be synced again if I do?
  18. Ok folks I have been chasing my tail on this one and quite frankly I am done so I need some assistance from folks alot smarter than me. Last spring I started having issues with my 89 VR backfiring on decel. A new collector from Mark (Mark's Pipes) and an awesome new/used set of stock mufflers from Earl (Skydoc) solved the backfiring on decel. However, in fixing that issue I seemed to have created another problem. Cold start the bike fires right up and after some initial cold engine sputtering and backfiring through the carbs it purrs right along at the set idle speed (1000 rpm on stock tach). However, once warmed up and if let sit more than a minute it is a bear to get restarted. I have done the following: 1) Sprayed non-chlorinated cleaner into the top side of the carbs with the diaphragm covers/air cleaner on and off. Focusing on all openings and accessible jets 2) Ran 6 to 12 oz Seafoam religiously for over a year 3) Drained fuel bowls and checked for gunk suspended in fual (found none) 4) Pumped straight Seafoam into carbs while running and let sit two days. Performed this twice as I wanted to make sure I did it right (resultant smoke cloud on restart killed all mosquitos within two miles and fire department has put me on their "watch list" ) 5) Changed and regapped plugs after each Seafoam treatment 6) Cleaned all electrical connections and retightened where necessary 7) Battery has been tested numerous times and is pushing more than enough amperage 8) Plug wires and diaphragms are less than 2 years old 9) TCI and coils are all stock (40,800 miles) At this point I am looking for any other suggestions. I will be attending the SE Texas Maint Weekend so maybe I can get some good pointers there as well. Thanks
  19. Hi all, my question is why would my #1 cyl run cooler than the rest of the other cylinders? Had the carbs sycn., with the engine warmed up cyl #2,3,&4 runs about 185 to 200 degrees while #1 runs about 170. It idles ok, runs revs up ok. I have not done anything to the carbs. The cyl takes longer to warm up than the others. I have put new plugs and caps & sycn the carbs. Any suggestions or leave it be.
  20. Friends Bought an 84 700 ltd Kaw. Nice bike good size "town bike". It would not start after stopping by for a visit. Ending up taking him home after giving up on jumping it off going down the drive way. well, decide to give a once over and see one exhaust port alot hotter then the others and say let me check the carbs later. Open the carbs and they are clean as can be. but when I flip them over to look at the float level before dissassembly realize one float is upside down. Call it a night and go home and this morning it pops in my head 3 were upside down and one right. Explains why it ran so long without the tank on. Any one every find stuff like this in their lives? But other question is when attemting to jump it off going down the drive way and popping the clutch it just dragged to a halt. So I got on for the next little hill and popped when in 2nd then all the way to 5th gear and it just drug to a halt with a catch and motor turning at the very end. I have not rode it and he is a little new to this and Im not sure how the clutch is. It is a shaft drive bike and all feels good. Anyone ever heard of this dragging to a halt? and Im not talking about the rear tire but some in the bike. Also after siitng a few minutes it fires right up. Never was hydro locked just flooded with a weak battery. Thanks all
  21. When syncing the carbs on my 86 lst Ed, I can get all four carbs to be perfectly level at about 24 bars onmy Carbtune but at higher rpms, up around 3500 or 4000 or so, they are no longer anywhere being level. I have no vacuum leaks. Even when riding at 65/70 mph it feels like they aren't balanced. I hook up the Carbtune and at idle they are still perfect. Run the r's up while sitting there and same result.......not balanced at higher rpms. Otherthan than this, it seems to runs strong. Compression on all cylinders is about even 165 to 175. Just would like some comments regarding if this sort of thing is normal. I do have a second set of "just gone through" carbs and may try mounting those to see what happens. But that is a lot of work just to see "what happens". Thanks
  22. Picked up new project a couple weeks ago a 87 Venture Royale. Was told it run a several months ago. Carbs were partially broke down and in a box. Cleaned the carbs and adjusted the valves . Received the new diaphragms this afternoon and installed them and put the carbs back on the bike. Woo Hoo it started. Started it several times and warmed it up. Turned it off at the switch and it kept running????? It did stop when I turned off the kill switch but lights and everything else stayed on. Anyway I played with it and some times it works fine and other times it stays on. Will even start in the key off position, can turn key through the acc position and it kept running. Got it to turn off again (kill switch and then turn the key off,) and did some other things and noticed that lights were on again. It then worked fine turned off with the key and sat fine for another couple of hours without doing anything. Quit for the night without chasing it anymore. I would think it’s the ignition switch but is there anything else I should be looking at? Working on some of the cracks and broken posts in the farings. The replacement post in the last picture is wood dowel some sanding and glued on using Rapid-Fix ( great stuff). Here is a couple of pictures of the progress. Thanks in advance for any ideas.
  23. Hi all, New to this site, not new to riding, or old bikes, or turning wrenches. Currently I have a 76 KZ900, 85 V65 and the couch, which is what I call my 86 Venture. I'm not satisfied with the way she's running. I sync'ed the carbs last nite with good results however she seems to idle rich (smell gas in exhaust). I've been through many carbs over the years, both motorcycle and car but I'll admit, the CV carbs are a different breed. My question; are there mixture adjustment screws on these and if so, where the heck are they?
  24. I have a crack in my #3 carb and need to get another one.The best price I've found is 396.00Does anyone have an idea where to find a used carb.Venture carbs will not fit(32mm).I've already sent e mails to all the salvage yards I could find but no luck.
  25. I got a friend who bought a used 85 wing. I am going to loan him my carbtune. Was wondering if any Wing owners has a documented procedure in syncing up the carbs.
