  1. This is a great vid of Tom Brokaw explaining Canada and Canadians to Americans. There may be some things that will surprise some of our US friends. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYoTJItSPt0]YouTube- Tom Brokaw Explains Canada To Americans[/ame] Brian

  3. In 1885 in Kingston; there was a group of British soldiers that were bored and decided to play a sort of hockey that we use today. That's how hockey was invented. Hockey wasn't invented by on specific person or group. hockey is played with a stick. for hockey However, it is generally accepted that Scottish settlers were the first to play it in Nova Scotia in the late 1700s. At this time there was mass emmigration into Canada of people from the Highlands of Scotland who imported many of their traditions, culture and pastimes. Ice Hockey became a Winter version of a game known as Shinty which has been played in the Highlands of Scotland for centuries. There are many similarities, most notably the stick or caman. The word 'puck' is also derived from old Scots, meaning to hit. There is also an unofficial game still played in Canada which is known as Shinny, a name derived from Shinty. There is also a claim that Hockey is a relation of Hurling which started in Ireland as the sport of Hurley. However, the conncetions are tenuous as mass emigration to Canada form Ireland did not occur until the mid to late nineteenth century. The equipment also differs considerably. Of course, there are other stories. Some say the MicMac indians played a form of hockey in Nova Scotia when the Europeans arrived. In Windsor, Nova Scotia, there is a school called Kings View Academy. A teacher there supposedly took his students out to the pond behind their school and asked them to make up a sport. The game they played became hockey.Another interesting story says that ice hockey was first played in 1885 by British soldiers stationed in Canada. Guards who were guarding the Parliament building in Canada used to sneak off to a nearby field and play ice hockey. Some say they started by whacking rocks with a stick to stay warm. Two towns claim that the first game of hockey was played there. The first is Kingston, Ontario, and the second is a small town in New Brunswick, both of which are in Canada. It is generally accepted that the current rules for hockey evolved from students at McGill University in Montreal ("the McGill Rules") in 1875. Around 1920 the NHL was formed by Canada. It grew. Rules evolved. For example in the 1920's you were aloud to pass forward.
  4. I have loved Canada and its people since the first time I drove across the border and saw the big sign that said Drink canada Dry. But please please please keep that Artic air to yourselves!!! :cold:
  5. It was just brought to my attention that Don Brechun, username DonB, passed away in September. This is the first I've heard of this and was very sorry to hear the news. If anybody has any details, please let us know. Our prayers go out to all his friends and family. Don was from Windsor, ON, Canada.
  6. I have been in contact with Yamaha Canada regarding their support for any future rallies in Canada. I got a very nice response back from the events coordinator for Yamaha Motors Canada. He said that his team reported back that they were well received at our rally in Kitchener two years ago and says: "Yamaha appreciates your patronage and loyalty and we try to keep abreast of what the different clubs are up. I would appreciate knowing what your plans are for 2010. We can't guarantee anything at this time, as budgets and plans are constantly moving target and won't be finalized till later, but it is always good to know what's happening and if we can attend one of your function, we would be pleased to contact you and make arrangements." So....please let me know of any plans for a significant rally in Canada. I know that there was talk of another "Kruisin' the Kootneys" rally. Is that one confirmed yet? I want to say that I sincerely appreciate the fact that Yamaha Canada supported us at the Kitchener rally with caps, t-shirts, etc.
  7. Does anyone know where I could possibly lay my hands on a 2008 LEFT engine guard? Used preferably (cheaper) and where in Canada (or shipped to Canada) can I find a rear rotor for a 2006 Midnight? The extremely few places I've found won't ship to Canada.. Seems the steel might violate some kind of HLS or something.. Cheers

  13. I was hoping someone could answer my questions about XM reception in Canada. I am about to purchase a Zumo 550 from Radioworld in Toronto. I will likely get the XM puck as well so I can have satelite radio and XM weather. Has anyone had experience with Radioworld? There price seems fair and they have everthing I need in stock. Does anyone have the XM weather/traffic option in Canada? Does it meet your expectations and work in Canada? Jim

  18. Gentlemen and Ladies The 05 RSV I purchased in Apirl has been running great up to now, however just today it starting misfiring out of both mufflers when slowing down. I mean like a gun going off. In Canada that could be a scary time since it is very quite up here. Any ideas/suggestions on what could be the cause and more importantly the cure.
  19. Hello all, new to this forum -- I own a 83 Venture Royale -- love the bike, but have ran into the famous secound gear problem. 21. Snow is flying like crazy up here in Ontario Canada so I now have a some time to start planning for next years rides. We have been looking for a trailer for our RSV. I have corresponded with one of our members who has the Aluma MCT trailer. I have yet to see one but hope to soon now that I found a dealer in Canada. We saw a fibergalass trailer a few weeks ago made by a Canadian company called Trekker. It looks like a nice unit. I was wondering if anyone has a Trekker trailer or knows of someone who does? Any input on either trailer would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. JR http://www.thomasamerican.com/trailers_for_sale_inventory.asp?Category=MCT&TrailerType=All http://www.trekkertrailer.com/
  22. I need a set of mufflers for my 86 Venture Royale. The Yamaha mufflers are very expensive. Where can I buy suitable after market mufflers. I am in Canada with an 82 cent dollar and would like to find a lower cost alternative to the Yamaha hardware.
  23. OK, I am not a LEA, but got this from a friend, It looks like if you are legal you have no problem but don't be a car thief in B.C. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_a4c9NUn3M]YouTube - Automatic License Plate Recognition - RCMP Canada[/ame]
  24. OK , I finally stopped in to talk to the guy that makes up our large patches, he also does my company stuff so I get a little break on these, at least that's what he tells me. The price is going to stay the same at 15.00 to your door except for the Canada group. You guys have to pay a little more. Ive had a few emails about these so lets get a count and I will get the order in on Monday the 30th.
  25. For awhile now I have wanted to travel through the 48 contiguous states on my bike. It the kind of thing that needs to be planned out long range in order to make the most out of it. There are some books out that will help with that, one called "1000 places to see in the US and Canada before you die". I have ordered that but thought that this site could offer up some good suggestions as well. So, if you had to pick ONE place in your state that would be the priority, what would it be?
