  1. HeloMech reminded me of a question I want to ask the many riders out there with his discussion of the blue dot, which was very interesting by the way. The question I have is about the rotating LED tail light bulbs I've seen for sale on ebay. Has anyone tried them? If so, do you like them, and what are the advantages? Okay, so more than one question. Looking for opinions. Thanks Glenn
  2. Hey all, I got a set of Kuryakyn ISO grips that I want to put on my '03 RSMV. I'm sure I'm not the first to have done this mod, so any tips for removing the old grips and placing the new ones on? I'm do-it-yourself challenged (I even have problems changing light bulbs!) so any help would be welcomed. Do the weights unscrew? If so, what's the best way to get them off? I can't seem to find a wrench that would fit and I'd be worried about damaging the finish!
  3. Ok, I replaced the battery a few weeks ago and started the bike. The starter stuck on! I had a couple of fuses that blew as a result of that. My low beam and tail light bulbs blew as well. I tore everything apart, replaced fuses and light bulbs and all is well, but.... I get no sound from my radio. I have unplugged all the large connectors and plugged them back in, nothing. At first the controller light up, but now that doesn't even light up. Is there a fuse somewhere specifically for the radio that any of you are aware of? If not I'm afraid maybe the radio brain blew with the power surge. If you all have any ideas for me that would be greatly appreciated. I haven't been able to find one either for a descent price, so I'm hoping I don't have to replace this one. I also hate to put the bike back together just to tear it apart to replace the radio. Thanks for all your help guys! Brent
  4. I have the Venture Line bumper lights on my 87 and i bought some mini wedge LED bulbs #2060-0006 from Drag Specialties $2.95 @. They project less light because of the angle they sit. So i bought new lens because of the color loss and that brighten things up some. LEDs are good if they are used in straight direction.
  5. How many VR members does it take to change a lightbulb? 1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed. 14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently. 7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs. 27 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs. 53 to flame the spell checkers. 41 to correct spelling/grammar flames. 6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb".. 2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp". 15 know-it-alls who claim *they* were in the industry, and that "light bulb" is perfectly correct. 156 to email the participant's ISPs complaining that they are in violation of their "acceptable use policy". 109 to post that this group is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a lightbulb group 203 to demand that cross posting to hardware forum, off-topic forum, and lightbulb group about changing light bulbs be stopped. 111 to defend the posting to this group saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts *are* relevant to this group. 306 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique, and what brands are faulty. 27 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs. 14 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL's. 3 to post about links they found from the URL's that are relevant to this group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group. 12 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy. 4 to suggest that posters request the light bulb FAQ. 44 to ask what is a "FAQ". 4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?" 143 to say "do a Google search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs". 1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now and start it all over again.... :rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf:
  6. any information about LED's that can be used to replace "peanut bulbs" for some of the aftermarket 1st gen lights. I dont know that I have ever seen anything like what I'm describing. I have to ease the power consumption that the bulbs take and I'm curious to know if there are direct replacements that will fit into the exsisting bulb receptacles.....Thanks for any guidance
  7. I hope this post isn't being beat to death but here goes anyway. Just installed a 15 inch LED light bar on the rear of my 88 VR and it works and looks great. I am intent on improving rear visibility both during the day and at night short of wearing a yellow reflective vest. I am just curious as to how much amp draw one can expect the taillight circuit to handle without ruining the computer. I was looking for replacements for the two 1157 dual filament bulbs that might draw a little less amp, but have not been able to locate a suitable substitute. I suppose there isn't such a bulb. Each 1157 bulb draws 2.1 amps, I think anyway, and maybe 2.7 amps (don't know for sure) when the brake light is activated. Double that for two bulbs and that is perhaps as much as 5.4 amps. No wonder the voltmeter drops so radically when the brake light is on. Has anyone modified their scoots like I have and would they have any advice on how to reduce the rear brake light circuit draw just a tad? I did purchase two led bulbs and installed them. Even with two led bulbs and the 15 inch led light bar, the computer warning light was on.
  8. OK -- I know I saw a thread on replacement bulbs for the passing lights on the RSV 2nd Gens. Darned if I can find it. I just need to know the best, most-liked, awesome bulbs that you guys have seen so I can replace mine. The bulb is not listed inthe parts catalog from Yamaha (at least that I could see). Thanks in advance for your assistance.
  9. Im going to order new passing light bulbs since im going to rewire the passing lights soon. I was also thinking about going to a led bulb. Since I am not disassembling it right now, I need to know what bulb size (type) is in there now so I can have it on hand. Thanks........
  10. I'm going to update the front lighting on my RSV. The bike is currently equipped with the stock headlamp, Yamaha light bar with standard lights, and a set of PIAA aux lights mounted on the bottom of the forks. The PIAA lights were installed with a fabricated mount which has proved to be inadequate, as the lights cannot be properly adjusted/ hold adjustment. I'm considering several options: 1. Replace the aux lights with moto-lights http://secure.electronicart.com/www_motolight_com or these: http://www.shopatron.com/product/product_id=PIA74238/353.0 2. Swap out the existing bulbs for brighter after-market bulbs (PIAA, Silverstone, etc.); if I do this, any suggestions for specific makes and models of bulbs? What fits the Yamaha aux lights (H3?)? 3. Install an H.I.D. light and drop the aux lights altogether. What bulb replaces our headlight? Does the high-beam/low-beam H4 work in our bikes/any bikes. Any suggestions as to make and model? I'm looking at these: http://www.xtralights.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1349 Any thoughts? Would appreciate comments from those of you who have looked to or installled any of these options, or examinged these questions?
  11. Enough's been said about repairing the computer module on this board, but i think there's one thing that's not being mentioned when the dash is out and exposed to the elements.... :-) Replace all the illumination bulbs with new ones, and save yourself the trouble of replacing a burnt out bulb later on down the road.. Why put a repaired dash that's 20+ years old back in without replacing all the bulbs which are pro'bly 20 years old as well? They're the same #158 bulbs used in auto dashes, and can be found at any local auto parts store. They run about $1.50 each and there's about 7 of them. Do it and save yourself some work.....
  12. Has anybody in here ever replaced their bulbs with LED bulbs? The tail lights are simple to find replacement bulbs but the turn signal bulbs would have to be made at a right angle to point to the front or rear of the bike. I have seen the blade type for the instrument panel and marker lights. The marker light again would have to be made with a right angle. Any suggestions? I know the VR's are lacking in the power output department and figure I could save some wattage for my trailer and other accessories if I can swap in LED bulbs. In the mean time I'm talking to a guy who says he can rebuild the rectifier and upgrade the stator for more output. Just have to find a couple used specimens to take him so he can get started.
  13. Ok, have 2 problems. Bike is a '93 VR. First problem:Radio channel display flashed rapidly and lost sound. Now no channel display or sound. The little red light that shows power on is lit, but nothing coming out of unit. Have had problems with radio losing sound with channel display remaining lit showing station that I was listening to, then will come back on and scare the you know what out of me. It will remain "off" for a few minutes, or it might be 2 or 3 days before it comes back on, or anywhere in between. Just a "wild a-- guess", did the radio give up the ghost or what??? Second problem: The bike has the wrap around rear lights. The lights are in a 2 bulb assembly and 1 of the assemblies keeps burning both bulbs out in less than an hour after replacing the bulbs, which btw is a pain in the you know what. A side note, if you have the same set-up, you need to buy at least twice the amount of bulbs needed because you will end up breaking probably 2 or 3 of them. I want to be able to keep these lights lit because it gives the bike an unbalanced look, and I am unbalanced enough already! :bang head: Any ideas?? Thanks Don H.
  14. Has anybody found a cheap source for bulk LED Wedge Bulbs that fit into #161 or #168 sockets? Should look something like this: http://www.customdynamics.com/Images/4802-honda.jpg I am think about converting all my additional lighting to LED's to free up some capacity for the trailer lighting. Generally these seem to run around $5 to $9 a piece, but I think that must be a tremendous mark-up, especially when you are looking for 20-25 bulbs in amber and red. Thanks in advance, Klaus
