  1. For years it was believed that electric bulbs emitted light. However, recent information has proven otherwise. Electric bulbs do not emit light, they suck dark. Thus we will now call these bulbs dark suckers. The dark sucker theory, according to a spokesperson, proves the existence of dark, that dark has a mass heavier than light, and that dark is faster than light. The basis of the dark sucker theory is that electric bulbs suck dark. Take for example the dark suckers in the room where you are. There is less dark right next to them than it is elsewhere. The larger the dark sucker, the greater its capacity to suck dark. Dark suckers in a parking lot have a much greater capacity than the ones in this room. As with all things dark suckers don't last forever. Once they are full of dark they can no longer suck. This is proven by the black spot on a full dark sucker. A candle is a primitive dark sucker. A new candle has a white wick. You will notice that after the first use, the wick turns black, representing all the dark which has been sucked into it. If you hold a pencil next to the wick of an operating candle, the tip will turn black because it got in the way of the dark flowing into the candle. Unfortunately, today's primitive dark suckers have a very limited range. There are also portable dark suckers. These bulbs can't handle all of the dark themselves, and must be aided by a dark storage unit. When the dark storage unit is full, it must be either emptied or replaced before the portable dark sucker can operate again. Dark has mass. When dark goes into a dark sucker, friction from this mass generates heat. Thus it is not wise to touch an operating dark sucker. Candles present a special problem, as the dark must travel in the solid wick instead of through glass. This generates a great amount of heat. Thus it can be very dangerous to touch an operating candle. Dark is also heavier than light. If you swim deeper and deeper, you notice it gets slowly darker and darker. When you reach approximately fifty feet, you are in total darkness. This is because the heavier dark sinks to the bottom of the lake and the lighter light floats to the top. The immense power of the dark can be utilized to man's advantage. We can collect the dark that has settled to the bottom of lakes and push it through turbines which generates electricity and helps push dark to the ocean, where it may be safely stored. Prior to turbines, it was much more difficult to get dark from rivers and lakes to the ocean. The Indians recognized this problem and tried to solve it. When on a river in a canoe traveling in the same direction as the flow of dark, they paddled slowly, so as not to stop the flow of dark, but when they traveled against the flow of dark, they paddled quickly so as to help the dark along its way. Finally we must prove that dark is faster than light. If you were to stand in an illuminated room in front of a closed, dark closet, then slowly open the closet door, you would see the light slowly enter the closet, but since dark is so fast, you would not be able to see the dark leave the closet. In conclusion, it has been stated that dark suckers make our lives much easier, so the next time you look at an electric bulb, remember that it is indeed a dark sucker.
  2. Has anyone had any experience with these "combo" replacement bulbs. http://www.customdynamics.com/motorcycle_led_bulbs.htm They can be wired so they are become running lights, extra brake lights as well as signals. But what about the amber lenses? doesn't that mess it up? I really want to increase the visibility at the rear end of my 83 VR If anyone has other suggestions, including what and how to for light bars etc I'm all ears!
  3. I would like to mount yellow LED "trunk side lights" to my trunk as additional turn signals. As shown in the following picture on one of the Texas folks bike. My question is how did you get the wire between the arm rest and trunk. I have never taken either off. Since It looks like I'm not going to be riding for most of the summer due to injury (broke my tail bone) and can't sit down I may as well farkel the bike. Thanks ps. To Ponch. Where did you purchase the LED replacement bulbs for your bike? I have spent over $50 on LED bulbs at Autozone/NAPA and am very disappointed in them. They are no brighter than stock incandescent bulbs. Except for passing lights and headlight I plan to replace every light (even dash) with LEDS. Thanks again. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk100/aharbi/Motorcycle/P6271197.jpg
  4. Hello all. New to the site so be kind. I'm looking to mount kuryakyn driving lights to the fender of my 06 venture. My question is will the electrical system handle the addition of two 35 watt bulbs ? I'm also looking to change the bulbs to yellow; unfortunately they only sell yellow H3 bulbs in 55 watts. Will the system handle the two 55 watt bulbs? The only additions to the system that I have are the OEM passing lights and a GPS, although I don't think the GPS is a major issue.
  5. The two light bulbs under the corner of the bags on a 86. 1156 bulbs that clip in to outside corner of bags. Didn't know they were there. Are they brake lights or running lights?? I'll find out tomorrow. Just wondering. Looks like they haven't worked in forever. Just getting to know "Brown Sugar" Missing a week of good riding weather for it. I think I remember where all those pieces go back. Leslie wouldn't want to see her now.
  6. While upgrading the lights onmy '83 I found two cracked bulb receptacles on the Ventureline lightbars. Can't get the bulbs to come on no matter what. since these things are riveted in place putting new ones in would be somewhat of a challenge. I know someone mentioned where to get the replacement lenses for these but I can't find it. Figure if they have the lenses they have the lights. Anyone?? On a aside, going to try and fix the lights in my chrome airdam. If I pour epoxie in the bottom and set new sockets in it, am i going to blow bulbs? i.e. does epoxie conduct electricity??
  7. Shamelessly stolen from 1 of the billion places that have this posted. 8. I didn't see this topic posted anywhere, so here goes. I just recently purchased my '05 RSTD and my 1st mod was to install a Kury run-turn-brake controller. As part of that mod I had to change the rear amber signals to red, so I bought the red lenses available from Kury. That's when it became interesting... Much to my dismay, I discovered that Yamaha used non-standard bulbs in their signals. I'd expected to find the 1156's in the rear, but they were different. The pins are not directly opposite each other (180 degrees), instead they are about 130 degrees offset. I can't see a number on them either. I've gone to all available auto parts shops in search of clear bulbs with this odd pin configuration and no one has been able to help me. In the meantime, I took a pair of clear 1156's and ground off one of the pins. Since the sockets are nice and snug, they're staying seated just fine. I don't like this as a permanent solution. Having found this in the rear signal, I took the lense off a front signal to see what they did there. Again, a non-standard bulb. This summer I bought a 2009 v-star 250 for my wife to learn on. The signals look the same from the outside so I decided to investigate the bulbs in them. To my delight I found that these use the 1156 (rear) & 1157 (front), so no problems there. I'm interested in finding out how others have dealt with this, short of replacing the signals. Some day I may upgrade to LED's, but don't know where I'd get them with these strange bases. Thanks in advance for any advice. Glenn
  9. I would like to get very bright turn signal and tail light bulbs any suggestions?
  10. Hey gang... Looking to replace regular bulbs with LED's... What base do the front blinkers use? I found a good thread but it says unknown for the front blinkers. I'm looking at these: http://www.customdynamics.com/motorcycle_led_bulbs.htm#Genesis_LED_Clusters_ but don't know which ones to use. I'm going to get dynamic clusters for the rear, the tail light LED cluster, and the running bar with blinkers I've seen everyone posting about. rs
  11. The 2002 Venture I am picking up this week has the sealed beam passing lights. The dealer tells me that I would have to buy the light kit (including housings) for $137 if I want to switch to halogens (35W, H3 lamp). He also quoted $22 each for replacement sealed beam bulbs in case I just want to replace the existing lamps! Canadian prices are quite a bit higher than USA prices, but this seems a little out of line. If I decide to go with the halogen lamps, does anyone know whether I have to replace all of it or if I can just fit the new lenses and new reflector to the housings for the SB units- if so, where can I get these? If I can't switch to the halogens for a reasonable cost, what aftermarket sealed beam lamp is suitable? I am also thinking about changing the amber signal light lenses to the clear ones (with amber bulb). (Is the lens interchangeable?) The plastic lenses appear to be reasonably inexpensive but the front bulbs (dual filament - run, turn) are VERY expensive - a lot more than the lenses! It seems to me I read somewhere that you could buy a standard automotive lamp at a small fraction of the Yamaha price and file off one of the lugs to fit these sockets. What would be suitable for the rear bulbs (single filament, turn only). Thank you Ross
  12. Just noticed a strange thing with my turn signals. Other riders behind me have told me that the signals are hard to see in the daylight, they say they are dim. Well, just checking things out in my garage, I notice that when I turn the right signal on, when the bulb flashes bright, the left signals and the brake light go slightly dim. When the bulbs go back to regular "running" brightness, the other bulbs brighten back to normal intensity. The same thing occurs in reverse when I turn the left signals on. In a sense, it almost looks like alternating flashing lights when I turn the turn signals on. Anyone seen this before? Could this be a bad flasher unit? A bad ground somewhere? Kinda scratching my head on where to start.
  13. Im not happy with my stock headlight. Thinking about a xenon or a hid conversion kit costs around 125.00. Any other bulbs i should try before i spend the money on one of these kits?
  14. I am in the process of changing all my blinker to clear linses and new amber bulbs and I can't get the old bulbs out. The first one twisted off in my hand leaving the base in the socket. I am assuming I have to push the bulb in and turn counterclockwise like the manual states. Mine is '99 RSV and I doubt the bulbs have ever been changed. I have never seen a socket quite like this one. It has a metal strip across the base. Should I remove that strip before trying to remove the bulb? I tried this but when I rotated the bulb the whole socket moved. Someone please set me straight on this. I have one rear bulb broken and do not want to try another one until I am clear as what to do.
  15. A couple years ago I bought high & low beam WHITE bulbs for my 2005 Silverado from http://www.eurodezigns.com They advertised a lifetime warranty for a mere $6.95 return fee. GUESS WHAT - I had a bulb go out so I took it out put it in an envelope with a $6.95 MO and mailed it back as the instructions say on their web site. Within 5 days I had a SET (2 bulbs) in the mail. So now I have a spare if another one goes out.
  16. Received this from a co-worker.....thought this was worth posting.........what do you think..........??? I got this email and it occurred to me that in our current economic situation, every little thing we buy or do affects someone else and perhaps their job... I don't know who this lady is that started this email but I think she has the right idea. Let's follow her lead!! This is what she says: This past weekend I was at Kroger. I needed 60 W light bulbs and Bounce dryer sheets. I was in the light bulb aisle and right next to the GE brand I normally buy was an off brand labeled "Everyday Value.." I picked up both types of bulbs and compared the stats - they were the same except for the price. The GE bulbs cost more money than the Everyday Value brand but the thing that surprised me the most was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO ! and the Everyday Value brand was made in - get ready for this -the USA . So throw out the myth that you cannot find products you use every day that are made right here - from a company in Cleveland OH! So on to another aisle - Bounce Dryer Sheets.... yep you guessed it Bounce cost more money and made in Canada, the Everyday Value brand was less money and MADE IN THE USA ! I did laundry yesterday and the dryer sheets performed just like the Bounce Free I have been using for years and at almost half the price! So my challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for everyday things and see what you can find that is made in the USA - the job you save may be your own or your neighbors! If you accept the challenge, pass this on to others in your address book so we can all start buying American, one light bulb at a time! Besides, you might save a little green in the process. Stop buying from China .......... We should have awakened a decade ago...... lets get with the program.... help our fellow Americans keep their jobs ...and create more jobs here in the U.S.A.
  17. Hey Everyone.... I have looked and looked on the site and have not found anything about the following I got from the Star Touring Remedy List... Do NOT buy the Venture passing lamps. Instead, buy the V-Star halogen passing lamps. They will fit the Venture passing lamp mounts with no problem. Remove the red wiring from the switch in one of the lamp housings and wire it to the Venture lamp switch. Why do this? Unlike the sealed beams, the halogen lamps have a replaceable H3 bulb. Pull out the bulbs and keep them as spares. Purchase the PIAA or Silverstar Ultra H3 bulbs. They are still 35 watt bulbs (i.e. do not consume more power), but put out 70 watts of light. Passing lamps part no.: STR-4NK35-10-00 OK...$88.00 for the H-3 Lamps on this site fhttp://www.motorsportssupercenter.com/pages/newvehicles/viewlines/62/Yamaha_Lines.aspx for the Halogen passing lamps....Unless there is an EASY way to change the Passing Lamps...I did see some posts for the Adjure lights...ANYONE here do this mod?....I have done the Silverstar Bulb for the Headlight.... ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS....:confused24: George In Virginia...
  18. I was just doing some research on Driveing, and Fog Lamps. I stumbled on this web site, which has some very good basic Information concerning Light Bulbs. May be of Interest: As refference material. http://www.danielsternlighting.com/products/products.html
  19. Don't know what the lights look like inside. Are they just bulbs? If so, anyone think about tinkering with them enough to figure out how to wire led's instead? In bright daylight, sometimes the lights are hard to see. These would be like the neutral, O/d, etc...what I call jewel lights. If they are bulbs, I would think led's would be much brighter.
  20. I want to wire up my turn signals like the first bikes, w/o the extra electronic components on later bikes. Just the handlebar switch, flasher relay unit and bulbs. I tried that but every relay unit canister I plug in just buzzes and will not flash the bulbs. When the switch is moved left or right, the proper bulb shines but no blink. If any techno brains know why, I'd appreciate an answer. I realize that they blink when a certain amount of resistance is produced from the energy used to light the bulbs. But, is there a blinker unit that operates with a timer or by any other method other than resistance?
  21. Need some electrical help here. I just replaced the 14 - 5 watt wedge bulbs in my lower light bar. So my questions are and am I correct in the following: 1) Amp draw for the 14 X 5 watt incandescent bulbs I removed was: 14 X 5 wts ea = 70 wts divided by 12 volts = 5.83 amps and 2) Amp draw for the 14 LED wedge bulbs I just installed is: 14 X .026 amps at 12 volts = .364 amps Therefore; reducing the load by some 5.46 amps. I also replaced both the stock 1157s in the taillight with LEDs purchased from "superbrightleds.com" and believe me, they ARE brighter. I then tied in the light bars into the taillight wiring in order to increase the load on that circuit. This seems to have eliminated the "warning" light on the dash from thinking a taillight bulb was blown. So what they come on together. Now whenever the brake light circuit is activated, the amp gauge doesn't drop at all and I have more even more visibility at all times. I used to be concerned watching the amp gauge drop significantly while sitting at a light for extended periods of time holding the brakes on. Are my above calculations correct or am I way out there in left field? Perhaps somebody more inclined than I can advise. Thank y'all
  22. I found a part number for that weird rear turn signal bulb on the 2nd gen Venture, and, I suppose, the RSTD also. 7507 Also referred to as the BAU15s on this website: http://autolumination.com/1156_1157.htm You can see these bulbs down near the bottom of the page. They also have LED replacements, if you want to actually DO that. I got the impression during my searches that this bulb is used in some European cars, like the BMW and the Porsche. How it ended up in our bikes is anybodys guess, maybe the Japanese designers got a helluva deal on the bulbs and sockets. Someone somewhere has asked if there were any bulb numbers for this bike, and this was the only one I didnt have till now. Hope this is of some use.
  23. Greetings, while on vacation this past week, I discovered that the dash lights on my '05 RSV don't work. I'm speaking of the back-light that illuminates the speedometer. When dark, I cant see the speed or the gas gauge. Makes for some nerve racking riding. The last night ride prior was about a month ago, and it worked then. The only thing that has been done is the bike has been washed twice since then. Any ideas as to why it quit working? Are there regular bulbs or some type of LED lights there? Is this something that maybe I can fix, or do you recommend the dealer? Would this be a warranty item? Thanks in advance for any help.
  24. I have heard/been told that if putting an LED bulb in place of an 1157 style (turn or brake light) use colored bulb with colored lense. Since the turn lenses are clear, will the amber bulbs show very well?

    Trunk Running Lights

I have a '92 VR. Has anyone encountered problems with the trunk running lights blowing bulbs or the bulb sockets not making connection with the bulbs. All the bulbs in mine were working, when suddenly, I had one working on the righthand side. Once I figured-out how to remove the &^%$ thing (What a stupid design!), I found two bulbs had turned black. I kept swapping the remaining two around until they worked in the outer sockets; however, I could not get either one to work in the center two sockets. Has anyone encountered this or a similar problem? If so, what is a good fix for it? Thanks, Randy
