  1. Anybody here have the Utopia backrest for their 1st. gen? How do you like them? Do they adjust forward and back? Is there room for a passenger with it installed? Is it easy to take off when you need to? I have the type with the brackets mounted to where the helmet locks are on the MKI. There's very little room for my better half so I take it off when she wants to ride, but then the brackets make the insides of her knees sore. Plus the Utopis rest looks so much simpler too. Thanks, Bill
  2. I know this is the wrong forum but i figured more people would see it and respond here about it. I am thinking about getting the Garman 550 and was wondering how much it cost, where is the best place to get one, is it or will it be outdated soon since they have the Garman 660 out, and where can i get the brackets that hold it? I think i would like for it to sit above the radio maybe? Also until i can get it hardwired in. does it come with a power cord that i can plug into my fairing and use it until i get it connected to the wiring harness? I'm not a tech guy and for some reason the GPS thing just seems complicated to me, with having to by the mounting brackets from another place, and which GPS to buy etc. I just know that i have heard alot of good things about the Zumo 550 and now i am seeing that the 660 is out by Garmen. Sorry for sounding like a Dummy, but i just need some help with this. Thanks.
  3. I'm trying to find new brackets and clamps for the vance & hines longshots on my 03 roadstar. I can find lots of places that sell the whole setup, but I only need the header clamps and the mounting brackets (rusted from previous owner) the pipes are still fine. Help.
  4. Parcel arrived Friday morning. Thank you Sir.:clap2: Quickstep not well, so brackets won't go on for a while.
  5. Does anybody out there have a pair of mounting brackets for the driver backrest? I'll also need the bolts and stems for them too. You can give me a price or if you need a part for a first gen then maybe we can trade outright for them....
  6. I finally got my fishtails mounted today. They are a tad long, but I like them. I had to make the rear mounting brackets, because they came without. I didnt want to use hanger brackets, so I used stainless steel. I welded the bracket on the inside of the pipe, and didnt have much discoloration. I apologize for the bike being dirty, but just took it ot of hibernation. All in all I am pleased with them.
  7. I have a Fairing Sub Frame that came off of my 1988 parts bike that I am going to scrap. Reason being, I cleanly removed the cruise control brackets from it. I needed them on my 1983 scooter for the cruise addition. It is still serviceable, just no cruise brackets, one picture shows where I removed these two brackets. I guess it's not really free, I will send it out for the price of shipping though. It's going in trash in a few days if no one wants it. I would rather not send outside US, with the customs stuff though. Gary
  8. front fork deflectors they would want to part with for a reasonable price? We have the brackets, I just need the plexiglass parts. The hubby is going to put them on my Virago.
  9. This may have been covered before and I missed it, if I did, I apologize. Anyway I am thinking of adding fishtails to my bike. Already have Barons slash cuts, so I thought that maybe a cheap set of fishtails might be fun. Can't get much louder! Checking into the JC Whitney fishtails, i found that they are smooth pipes with no rearward mounting brackets at all. Are they ok to run just mounted to the headpipe only? You could use a "P" hanger bracket of some sort, but wouldnt look that good. If anybody is familiar with em I would appreciate hearing from you.
  10. I've got a couple things from my '86 VR that I'm going to try to sell, problem is I have no idea how much they're worth. I was hoping you guys could provide some info. 1. Set of Air Deflectors with mounting brackets, good shape to be from a 23 year old bike. No discoloration and only minor scratches. 2. Driver's back rest with mounting brackets. Very good shape only issue is slight fraying in the leather where the back rest mounts on the bike. I've looked on ebay, but I can't find either of these things listed to get an idea for a price. Thanks for the help, Mick
  11. Old question but can anyone steer me to a member who makes these brackets. Thanks for the help.
  12. Just put a trunk light on my 2006 Venture today and works great. I found as a suggestion on earlier forum to get from autozone a WE6-197 led strip brake light. I mounted right to bottom of trunk. It was suggested to use brackets. I had some super stick 3M foam double backed tape used for heavy mounting. It seems to hold excellent since light bar is light weight. If not I will use brackets later. Did the suggestion with two diodes, one with 330 ohm resistor in line for running light and direct from lower brake light. This conversion worked well and in my opinion looks good. At $25.00 for light, diodes and resistor and tube of solder and some shrink tubing, you can't go wrong if you are on a budget and want more visibility. I am going to try and find some chrome caps for the ends where the original plastic brackets were located to dress it up some. For the money I saved, I am now going to invest in a lowering kit as next project.
  13. I'M in need of a set of back rest brackets for an 86 model. these are the brackets that attach to either side that holds the backrest in place. any condition. Thanks
  14. Thinking of putting road king mufflers on. found a nice cheap set. I've seen the brackets offered here but can't find them. Thanks in advance
  15. Nope....not that rack. You guys, always one tracking it. Well now that you're here anyway I'm looking for a bigger trunk rack. The one that came on the bike is of unknown make or model to me and as I don't get to see any 1st Gens around here so I'm going to throw this out there. Mine is only 12" wide and 9" deep. It is mounted on a set of Z brackets to the truck to raise it high enough to clear the backrest. The pattern I'd like to match for the mounting is 4" X 9 1/4" to use the existing holes and backing supports inside the trunk. If a larger one had longer support legs to give it some height that would work. If a larger rack had short legs or bolted into the frame of the rack as the current one does I could reuse the Z brackets and mount to a 4" X 11 1/4" pattern. I've got a trunk bag I'd like to be able to use but it's a bit wide for my rack. I'd be looking for something about 18" wide and maybe 12" deep but I could get by with 9" or 10" if needed. I've had not much luck on fleaBay for anything that might work so I'd thought I'd ask if anyone had a parts bike with a rack they aren't going to be using that might meet my needs. I'd buy outright or some horse trading for my old rack which is in very good condition. I'm open to any suggestions, advice or offers. Thanks Mike
  16. How to explain this. - - the windshield bolts to a strip of metal running across the inside of the fairing. This strip of metal is mounted on each end with a plastic ear to the inside of the fairing and at the center with a bolt to a raised mount. Both ears are broken - only thing holding it is the center bolt. It's a '05 so the warranty covers it but, in two weeks is a trip up to VA and back. (Blue Ridge and Skyline) Don't think there's time for the dealer to handle it. What about two small angle brackets in place of the ears. Any reason it wouldn't work??? Don't know how much trouble it will be to grind the ears off and mount the brackets. Any thoughts anyone???
  17. I know a lot has been posted about the Stebel Nautilus Air Horn. I took a few pictures of my installation on my RSTD and wanted to share them. Stebelhorn1.jpg shows how I mounted the relay under the right side cover next to the coolant overflow tank. Stebelhorn2.jpg shows the wiring according to the wiring diagram included with the horn package. Stebelhorn3.jpg shows the brackets I made from aluminum bar stock. Aluminum is easy to drill and bend. Not shown in the picture is the slight bend I made in each bracket to get the horn to sit back closer to the frame. I used a large adjustable wrench to hold the brackets while I hand-bent them. Bend away from you on the end that bolts to the original horn bracket, bend towards you on the other end. The brackets are hidden behind the horn so they don't have to look pretty. Stebelhorn4.jpg shows the finished project.
  18. Just in case anyone was wondering if this could be done, Yes you can put other HD pipes on your RSV once you put the "adapter" brackets on. I bought my 2000 RSV used, in 2005. It had BUB slip-ons on it at the time. The chrome on the end caps had deteriorated to the point where they needed to be replaced. However, I did not want to pay the $200 that new end caps were going to cost. Plus, they were too loud for me (I think the previous owner removed the baffles). I then bought the HD muffler brackets sold on VR, and put on a set of drilled out RK mufflers. I liked them, but was looking for just a little more sound. Recently, I got a set of brand new HD touring BUB slip-ons off EBAY for $80 (Yes, $80!), and they fit right on the "adapter" brackets. They're still pretty loud, though, so I don't know if I'll keep them. If I decide to sell them, I'll post 'em here first to see if anybody wants them. If not, I'll put 'em back on EBAY. Anway, just in case anyone was wondering...
  19. I recently bought a set of used Yamaha leather slant bags, complete with mounting hardware. They were installed on a Road Star. I think the mounting hardward is different for a 1996 Royal Star but I can't find pictures to confirm. The Yamaha website just shows the bags and not the mounting brackets. Can someone show my pics of the brackets for a 1996 Royal Star?
  20. Could some one steer me to where I can b y these brackets for this modification. I have RK slip ons! I tried the clasified . Thanks in advance Nevada Max
  21. Hi All, Have just purchased passenger floorboard mounts from nawarhorse in ebay store. They sent an email saying that shipping would be $US150--for two puny brackets:crying: I've sent an email requesting they use USPS which is cheaper, but have had no reply. Any advice on how I might get these bl***y brackets to Oz ?? 22. I recently bought a set of mufflers from an 87 XVZ 1300 and wanted to swap them onto my 83. When I tried to install I noticed the brackets on the mufflers are different but the muffler itself seems to be identical. What I'm wondering now is whether I could the change the rear peg brackets and replace them with passenger boards from an 87 to make this work or do I have to go the slice and dice route. I want to thank you all in advance, I'm still learning about the First Gens and you guys are an invaluable resource. Thank you.
  23. Hello folks. I have a set of brand new Road King Muffler brackets inadvertantly sent to me by Mark Hilliss. When I asked him what to do with them, he said I could offer them for a donation for Freebird. Sounded good to me. Thanks Mark. So, to help get some donations :mo money:for the site, Mark is graciously dionating these fine brackets to the highest contributer over the next two weeks. I know they are good quality brackets because I just received my own set a few weeks ago. So, if interested in helping Freebird out and getting some great brackets in the deal, this is all you need to do: Make a donation to the site (separate from your subscription dues). Send me a PM with your amount donated. After May 03, 2008, I'll see who made the largest contribution and then send them the brackets. Shipping costs will be on me. I hope this is the right way to go about doing this. Thanks for your assistance. Rusty Metts
  24. I'm thinking of getting a GPS and was wanting to see one mounted on your Venture. Also any advise on where to get mounting brackets etc would be greatly appreciated. I am thinking about going with a Garmin 450 or 550 maybe. Thanks.
  25. I saw a post here the other day on Platinum Burners from Wal Mart for running lights, so I took a look at what they had. I noticed these small chrome lights for $15 a pair and had an idea. I don't really need any additional lighting on the front, but I have been thinking about more visible brake lights. Sure enough I was able to locate red bulbs on the net that are replacements for the white ones. ($2.75 ea) I started trying to figure where to mount them and tried a couple of locations. This is what I ended up with. I tried them turned up and then turned down. I like the down position better. These lights have small brackets that are adjustable up and down, right and left. No drilling or anything. I simply removed the mounting bolt that came with the lights, removed the nut holding the turn signal, added the new light and put the stock bolt back in place. Took less than 5 minutes to put them both on, but I haven't wired them yet. If I like it, great. If not, well, I blown 20 bucks for a lot less before. Jeff
