  1. I'm sure most of you, like me are following all the coverage of the Japanese earthquake & tsunami aftermath to one degree or another. That first day or so, I was transfixed watching the severity of the devastation inflicted on Japan and it's people. I was floored by the numbers---the specs., if you will about the quake itself and the crustal shift, etc. But, I noticed that through all of it (or at least most of it) that the spirit of the Japanese people shown through...they were relatively calm, orderly, patient, controlled and typically disciplined even in the face of adversity. I was humbled to witness that, knowing from our experiences with Katrina and the BP disaster what a lack of calm and discipline looks like. I was proud of them, proud for them; that led me, more than any thing else (I think), to pray more earnestly than I have about a lot of things in quite a while. Which brings me to the situation which spawned the title of this post and the need to write about it. I was watching the 6:00 or 7:00 pm news today and a small newscrew & reporter (Diane Sawyer I think it was) was in a pretty heavily devastated area, when they came upon a small family of Japanese sitting outside, eating. What got to me, almost instantly when I saw it, was the father stood up, half bowing in usual Japanese fashion and offered the newspeople part of their food..................... They were sitting there with nothing but utter devastaion as far as the eye could see; surrounded by the rubble of their world as they had known it. They didn't have a lot of food, and yet, out of their need and their lack they offered part of what they had to this western news crew, in their fine western clothing; any of whom probably made more in a week than that man did in a year. I choked and teared up, not for the man and his family, though life will be a challenge for the forseable future for them, I cried not for them, but for us. This little Japanese man, this family, this people deserve EVERY last bit of respect we have to give; every last bit of help we can render and EVERY prayer we can muster. By all accounts, it is going to take years for Japan to recover from this disaster, which isn't entirely over yet! So, I will pray daily for Japan, for this man and his family, who offered of his meager meal and I will imagine that every Japanese person affected by this tragedy is just like him proud yet humble, friendly, giving selfless (whether the rest really are or not isn't important) I want to think of them all in that way and pray my very best prayers for them and hope against hope that a little bit of the little man rubs off on all of us! There is still hope!
  2. This man from the Northeast moved to Texas when his company closed and relocated, and from the first he was struck by the prominence of state flags everywhere, and how Texans were constantly bragging about their history and culture. The northerner found his new Texas co-workers friendly as hell, far as that goes. From the start, in fact, they had invited him to join them each afternoon after work when they would have a few cold beers at a nearby bar. Still, they would rib him a lot with talk about The Alamo, San Jacinto, Travis, Bowie and Crockett, Hood's Texas Brigade... and yankee jokes of course. Anyway, after a few months or so, it got to irritating him and, finally, one Friday afternoon, the yankee lost his temper and cut in: "You damn Texans think you guys were created on Day One! There are heroes up where I come from too, you know," he rejoined. The Texans looked at each other, baffled a bit. "Like who?" one of the Lone Star boys finally asked. "Like Paul Revere, THAT'S WHO," the yankee replied smugly. After a bit more confusion among the Texans, one of them snapped his fingers in recognition of the name and replied: "Oh yeah! Wasn't he that feller who ran out of the house in the middle of the night hollerin' for help?"
  3. Got home today and Wolfie came out and told me her wolf got bit by a rattle snake. My response was bs we have been setting record lows for the last 2 weeks it was 8 degrees this morning. She says come here and sure enough snake pieces scattered around the yard she shot it twice with a 20 gauge shot gun. She saw it bite her wolf above his eye and later we discovered our 18+ year old lab got bit on the snout as well. I can't believe a snake is out already.
  4. Just thought I would share this experience with you. Having stripped my machine down and doing a complete service on it before the Spring I tried to remove the slide pins from the front brake to strip the calipers down and clean them and change the pads whilst I was at it. At first I carefully tried to remove the offending pins. Needless to say they would not come loose and the allen key just stripped the head even after tapping it to try to loosen any corrosion. I soaked them for a few days in release oil on the caliper. I ordered four new ones but was amazed to find the part number had been changed from 4TT-25914-00-00 to 5JU-259141-00-00. (I'll explain later). The lower one on each side of the caliper came out no problem by inserting a torque bit no. CR-MV 45 into the rounded allen hole after a little bit of tapping with a hammer. I did have visions at one stage of having to drill them all the way out. The upper of the two pins were real pigs I ended up drilling through the center of the head with first a 4.5mm drill, followed by a 7mm drill and lastly a 9mm drill go as deep as the thread so you can get the other torque bit in comfortably, this was a CR-MV 10 has more splines on it and gets a good grip. They came out easily with a ratchet and attachment. Be aware that the caliper pistons retract as you work on the brake so I periodically operated the brake lever to put them back into position. I could find no signs of corrosion on any of the four pins, they were clean and looked almost new. The part has changed from an allen bolt to a 12mm socket head in line with all newer models, I did comment at the time I ordered the new parts that if I knew these newer type pins would fit I would have had some of them fitted. It turned out that they did fit and the reason for the part number change was obvious. I applied copious amounts of copper slip to the pins on re-assembly and torqued them to the recommended 25nm. Did Yamaha know something I did not, before I started this? Key to photographs. 1. Slide pins. 2. Left to right. Lower right caliper. Lower left caliper. Upper right caliper. Upper left caliper 3. Two torque bits. 4. Torque bit fully home in 9mm hole. 5. The new slide pin, with copious amounts of copper slip. Neil. (Old Miner).
  5. Anyone know if "new " part # / part works as well as old. It's a gen 1 stat seal. New one is a bit different but that's what the book calls for.
  6. I just saw an ICM on Ebay and was wondering if there is a difference in the ICM of these two bikes. The reason I ask is the Honda Valkyries the ICM is different between the Interstate and the Standard or Tourer. The Interstate has a little bit more spark advance in the mid range RPM which give a bit more power in that area. I put a Interstates ICM on my Tourer and it is quite a noticeable improvement. No more flat spot. Much more linear power-band. Just Curious. Still trying to learn everything I can about this bike. Tom

    Hello

Just wanted to say Hi to everyone here at venturerider. I have read quite a bit and just had to join. You guys have just to much fun!!!
  8. While on vacation this past September, we encountered lunchbag letdown in some of the hotels we stayed at in regards to internet usage. Or in other words, we had to pay for internet time, while anyone with a wi-fi set up was good to go...FREE. You've already gathered I am of Scottish descent. Sooooo, we decided that we should purchase a laptop for our next vacation, amongst other uses. Time to pick your brains a bit, as I am also a wee bit lazy as well What size laptop fits in the trunk of a second gen? Is the trunk the best place to carry it, or in a saddlebag better? I seem to remember Kregerdoodle mentioning that a 15" is all that would fit in the trunk....I think...it seems like a lifetime ago that we were in Texas. Any experience with this out there? Thanks gunk:Laugh:
  9. I come here tonight a bit humbled. When my bike blew out the clutch in sept. I was a bit distrout. Was thinking about parting it out.Now its setting in my driveway repaired. Allit needs is a new tire on the rear to get me up and going. This is where the thnk you's come in. All of these are in no particular order. To those who pitched in and made it monetarily possible I am gratefull. I dont know who you are as Aamcotrans (Rob) will not tell me who you are.Rob you started this whole thing and Im gratefull. To( Jeff) muffinman who took the time to help diagnose it and finally talk me into bringing the bike to him so he could fix it, and also finding the parts needed for a 1/3 of the price for new. And to (Earl) skydoc for the constant calls and pm's talking me out of parting the bike. I was ready to do tis to get the money to buy something new. Now I can ride again just need to get a new tire so I can ride further than my own neighberhood. Again many thanks to all who were involved . I dont know who you all are so if I forget someone please dont be upset. I have my ideas who all helped but they didnt want to be brought out into the open. Thanks again This group is the greatest extended family ever David
  10. Is there anyone out there on the south side of Atlanta with a tire changer? I've got my rear wheel off my 96 RSTC and am looking to swap out the tires. I am thinking of buying a tire changer but would really like to get back on the road sooner. I can afford to pay a little bit but not what the shops around here want. If you can help me or if you know someone that can do it at a reasonable rate could you let me know. Thanks Bob
  11. Then the beast bit its "HEAD OFF"!!!!

  13. Just wondering what the most quite exhaust is that can be installed on an RSV? Have khrome works now and a bit to loud for me.
  14. Good write here makes it nice and easy. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=258 They were out a bit. I wonder if I'll be able to tell the difference? How does one know the rpm at idle?
  15. Hi all - Read all the posts about the wheel chocks and most deal with Harbor Freight. Anyone hear of this one? Or use it? A bit pricey but apparently adjustable for width. http://steadymate.com/us/product/20/68/steadymate-motorcycle-wheel-chock.html
  16. Does anyone know someone who paints trucks. I have an 04 trailblazer which the clear is peeling, slight paint fade, and some rust starting at the bottom of the rear doors. Truck does not have 60,000 miles on it. Phoned around here and the numbers seem a bit high, Four grand, Ouch, plus our local 13 percent taxes. Would be willing to drive it somewhere Northern Ontario, Michigan, New York. Any Ideas ? Brad
  17. Hi, My clutch friction point is way out at the end of the lever travel. I'd like to bring it in a bit as my hand is only just big enough. Do I have any adjustment options, or is it time for new friction plates plain and simple? BTW, the clutch does not slip. For example, yesterday I was at a light on an incline and, when it went green, I found I had only downshifted as far as 2nd. The old gal (~60k miles) groaned and shuddered a bit, but pulled away up the incline in 2nd no probs. Thanks, Brian H.
  18. In the past, I've used the Scala Rider teamset, and it worked great for what it was. It was also $300 at the time. I'm not sure what it runs nowadays, but I talked my father in law into ordering a knock-off version and he loves it! I just figured I'd share. The shipping was a bit slow, taking around 2 weeks... I've ordered from thei company before, they have a LOT of gizmos and gadgets that are straight from Hong Kong... Here's a link to the headset if anyone is interested! http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.35612
  19. This seems a bit pricey to me. RandyA http://cgi.ebay.com/87-model-yamaha-venture-royal-/320578578158?pt=AU_Motorcycles&hash=item4aa3f8e6ee
  20. Well I finally got some solid motor mounts, a "CondorBrace", and a new Metzler all put on. I also repacked the swing arm bearings, cleaned all the bushings and installed zerks in the rear suspension. I also bought a chin cowl from Alabamacameo and got it installed today after I wrapped the front header pipes with header wrap to help cut radiant heat. I also took out the Y.I.C.S. and I have no more popping or coughing going on. Then I got my carb synchronizer from the guy in the big brown truck, so I synced the carbs this evening. Hopefully I'll have some new to me pipes late this week or early next week. This thing feels like a whole new bike! Much better handling. The solid mounts didn't seem to add any sort of vibrations. It even sounds a bit quieter with the headers wrapped. This winter I'll be putting the original engine back in so it will be getting some new gears to avoid the second gear issue. I'll also be adding a higher output stator and a spin on oil filter adapter. I'll have to make sure the valves are adjusted good while its out as well. About the only thing I can think of that's left on my to do list is to make a header style collector similar to the ones made by Markspipes. Unless of course one pops up for a reasonable price either on eBay, Craigslist, or on here. Now I just have to find the time to give it a good/quick wash before the big ride in Durand, WI. this Saturday. The 12 hour night shift really doesn't help give a bunch of extra time on my hands. Well here a few pics of the chin cowl that I got from Alabamacameo installed. It's a bit different than the ones I've seen on all the other 1st gens. I think it looks a bit sportier. Thanks, Bill
  21. Hello Everyone: FYI, I just listed a 14" windshield and lower plastic pieces, that I resently took off of my 05 RSTD. It is less than one year old. I simply needed a bit taller windshield. I put on a 19.5 inch windshield. Let me know if anyone is interested. Thanks...
  22. Hello all, Searching for a Midnight Venture and found what appears to be a nice example. My only issue is I know little of what particular examples are worth. Here is the find; http://www.cycletrader.com/find/listing/2003-Yamaha-Royal-Star-Midnight-Venture-97217933 Price seems a bit strong for the miles. Can anyone please give me some insight into this market? Thanks!
  23. Anyone who hasn't done this, I highly recommend it. I recently had it done and had the real test during STAR Days (going to it, during it and coming home). Overall guessing did 1500+ miles in a 5 day period. I had just a little tiny bit of that butt burn feeling but certainly not enough to make it uncomfortable in the least. Best $40 I have ever spent.
  24. I have mentioned in the past that my pillion and I lost two of our three Border Collie dogs in the past couple of years. The remaining dog, Cooper, has been a bit lonely of late so I bit the bullet and got him a mate. Meet Chloe. Sorry they're not real good quality shots - done on my phone. First shot is Chloe and the other is Chloe and Cooper in the back of my ute. (That's pick up to you northerners!!) Ain't she sweet?
  25. Since I am so new to the Ventures I have to ask even if I sound stupid, should there be movement in the rear brake caliper? I can move it a little bit up and down with my hand it seems to rock on a bolt, I just want to make sure its supposed to do that.
