  1. Ok folks, I think I may be outa my mind. I am a scooter rider (SYM RV250) and wish to upgrade and get more power and do a bit our touring with my wife. Am I biting off more than I can chew by looking to ride this big-boys bike? My only experience with a clutch bike was the Highway Patrol's safety course. I have been riding my scooter for 6 months. Should I be looking at something a bit smaller and work my way up to this bike? Thanks Ken
  2. waterbug

    Indy GP

The Indy GP was this last weekend and they had bikes on Meridian down town on the circle I met up with Bob and Dano and a few others here and there. I counted 6 ventures out of probably 5 thousand HDs there. They want to make Indy a bike week like Daytona at some point from what I have heard but man it's a mad house! It was fun but they need someone who knows how to organize and put one on. I did see a few Indians running around and only 4 victories and one Vision and it was getting a lot of attention. Seen a little bit of everything
  3. A bit of a surprise for me,,, I couldn't believe what rolled into and then out of my driveway,,, it took me a minute,,,ya
  4. Hi, in a few of the Threads ive wrote a few members asked to see the Ride . It was a bit dark before i got the camara out but it looked kinda cool?
  5. Just bought it, has 43,00 miles and I have a couple of questions. The temp gage is not working, neither is the cruise. Found some good info on the sight regarding the cruise. Also the previous owner tells me he's never had any valve shim work done and was wondering if that should be done. The bike rides a bit rough and the gas mileage is around 30 mpg. I think it should be closer to 45, but not sure. Have to race the engine a bit to get going. I also own a 1982 CB900C that runs really smooth and almost takes off in 1st without giving any throttle (that's in high with the 10 speed trans). Any info would be appreciated. Thanks guys.
  6. my stebil horn went south. Anyone have a stock horn or lead on another stebil? I like the stebil horn but they seem to be a bit more pricey than what they were a few years ago.
  7. Now that Bubber has been able to get a set of RSTD bars, let's start this again to see if we can find me a set. I know we had some posts on the other thread, but I need to find a set for someone who is a bit financially challenged when it comes to the bike fund. Has anybody else got another set?
  8. Just blew out the back tire on the highway. Almost made it standing. Used the grass bank instead of the pavement for the fall. Roughed up the bike a bit, luckily I am fine. Now to sit and wait for the wife to bring the truck so I can load it up.
  9. Just returned from Illinois with a 2008 RSV. Yamaha's are new to me as I've always been a GW rider until I got stupid and dumped mine off a 12 ft deep embankment, but I couldn't resist this bike when I found out it only had 1969 miles on it and the previous owner just needed to get out from under the payments. So far like a lot of posts I've read the biggest problem has been getting use to moving my feet forward instead of straight up. The other thing is the engine sounds a bit tinny to me compared to the 6 cyl wing, and doesn't have near the power. Other then those minor changes I love my RSV. I'll be making some changes to the lighting as soon as my pocketbook allows and possibly a seat upgrade. Thanks to everyone who has posted what they've done to improve this great machine. Hope to meet some other RSV riders who live around the DFW area. Until then keep the shiny side up. Jim
  10. This old sea dog is coming ashore in San Francisco for the weekend June 24 - 26. I'm going to be docked in the Fisherman's Warf area. I'm looking to meet some of the members from the area. I'm thinking of Sunday, because I'm hoping to make it to Harbor Freight Saturday, but I'm very flexable. I know the area a little bit, I can make my way to Hooters or Bubba Gumps, maybe even a place in China town. PM me if you want to set something up.
  11. I don't know anyone with another Venture, nor have I ever road one before. I always owned in-line 4's. So I'm asking... are these bikes suppose to sound like a v-twin? That's how mine sounds. It starts right up(min. choke), idle's good, but when you take off, it luggs(not boggs) a bit. It seems to have good power and speed, but lower rpm, it sounds like a v-twin... and luggs a bit, at slower speeds.
  12. Just wanted to offer my sincere thanks to all of you who attended my maintenance day. It was great to see all our old friends and meet some new ones as well. This is something that Eileen and I truly enjoy doing and once again, we enjoyed it immensely. It would have been perfect had it been about 10 degrees cooler. I told you that I would not let it rain but I just can't seem to get the temperature thing down. When the last had left and Eileen and I were sitting on the front porch having a cup of coffee, we both had the feeling that it was WAY to quiet. It's almost like an "empty next" syndrome. She looked at me and said "maybe we should do this twice a year". I was quiet surprised by that remark and don't know that it would be a good idea but I was surprised that she said it. I think though that having it once per year makes it a bit more special. If we ever DO decide to do it twice per year, I'm thinking that the fall one would just be for socializing and NOT for maintenance. A lot of work got done and if I try to name all that helped with the many projects then I will surely miss some people. V7Goose is always MAJOR help though as well as Squidley, SkyDoc, Monty and so many others. This just couldn't happen without the help of so many of you. If somebody was there to lend a hand for you and you want to thank them publicly here, please do so. Again, a big thanks to each and every one of you who made the trip. You folks really touch our hearts and you probably have no idea what a huge part that VentureRider plays in my life. You are all very special people. Some of you are so special that perhaps a bit of medication would help.
  13. I am new to this forum as well as the 2003 royal star venture that i just bought. I have searched all around this forum but haven't found the exact problem that i may be having. I say "may" because i'm not sure if this is the way this bike is supposed to sound and perform. This bike has 3200 miles on it and looks brand new so i picked it up for a deal. I am used to riding v-twins like my raider. I trailered this bike back home and I believe the previous owner hasen't ridden it for a few months. When I started it, it cranked right up and idled what sounded a bit rough but not bad, when i rev it while in neutral it sounds nice and smooth but throttle response is a bit bad. The real problem seems to be when the bike is under load, when i take off in first gear the smooth sound turns into a sort of a - putt putt putt putt sound like it may be missing, it also seems to surge a bit at the top of each gear. this thing seems to have very little power at top gear, when i twist the throttle at 60 mph it is slow to 70 or 80 mph, even if i downshift to 4th it makes noise but doesn't seem to go anywhere. I also get small backfires while downshifting and letting off of throttle, not bad, but i can hear them. I'm very accustomed to my raider which is very snappy at any gear, maybe its just me but there seems to be a problem.
  14. I am working on the steering column of my 96 GMC full size P/U. There are a bunch of screws in the steering column that look like a Torx BIT, but are 5 point instead of 6 point. So I need a nut driver that has 5 internal points. This screw head is about 1/8" OD. I have been looking at tool places and can not find anything like this. I have found the Pentasockets but they are for a screw head with 5 flat sides, This is a star shape more like what a Torx bit looks like.
  15. I've been moving my handlebars around some trying to find the most comfortable position for me. I think I finally got there by rotating them down toward the tank quiet a bit. All is good, but the turn signals, cruise control stuff, etc are now pointing down too much. I've tried loosening them to rotate them up a bit, but they don't seem to want to move. Can these be rotated around and if so, what am I missing?
  16. My 99 Royal Star Boulevard's rear fender seems to be shifted to the driver's right a bit. There is still a little clearance between the tire and the under fender supports, but I am trying to figure how to get it straightened out. I have owned the bike since new, and it has not been down, so I seems to be a mounting issue. I took the fender off tonight (four mounting bolts) and looked to see how I could shim it to shift it a bit. At this point, I am thinking about a spacer (washer) on the upper left bolt. Not sure how much I can shim at the bottom mount points. Anybody have experience with this?
  17. Folks, I am in Minnesota for our semi-annual sales meeting. This is always a busy week as we have meeting from about 8:00 in the morning till usually about 9:00 at night. I usually manage to check my messages and etc. in the morning and later in the evening but just don't have a lot of time this week. If you send me a message or a request, please understand that the reply times are a bit delayed right now.
  18. I saw a couple of posts today about downloading music and while I don't condemn anyone for their choices, I respect the artists and their rights (and copyrights). But I do LOVE to collect live music and video of my favorite artists. I thought I would start a new thread and share a little of my experiences over the past 10 years with the "tape" trading community and downloading. "Bit Torrent" isn't the problem, it's the sites that you access with your Bit Torrent client. Like most other things created by man, Bit Torrent can be used for good or evil! I've used Bit Torrent every day for the past 10 years with no problems. I download mostly live music from "trade friendly" bands that approve of it that has been recorded at a concert or off of a TV. You won't find the top 40 there and nothing that is "copyrighted" or by a band that requets their live music NOT be shared. I got started with the "trading" community doing BnP, Vine and Trades. BnP is where you send Blanks and a self addressed stamped return mailer to a trader and they burn copys of the discs in their collection and return them to you. Vines (and trees) are organized methods of sharing by passing music through the mail to be copied. I must stress that this is all done with the approval of the artists and not all artists allow taping, trading, and/or downloading. However there are many, many "taper friendly" bands. Some of the most famous bands included are The Greatful Dead, Little Feat, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Govt. Mule, Phil Lesh, Widespread Panic, Ratdog, Yonder Mountain String Band, Drivin and Cryin, The Black Crowes, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Blues Traveler, Dave Matthews, and many more you may not be familiar with. OK, I'll admit that Bit Torrent is not for the feint of heart, requires some time learning the methods and practices, and can lead you DIRECTLY to the dark side! But if you follow the narrow path and be careful it can be VERY rewarding! Where it all began for me and a great place to hang out and get started is the Allman Brothers web community, Hittin' the Web. VERY friendly place to hang (a lot like venturerider and my other favorite place to hang, klrworld) and lot's of people willing to help you learn and get started "sharing the grooves"! Drop in, sign up, get started and you can thankl me when you get your first CD or DVD! http://www.allmanbrothersband.com/ In the "Music" forum check out Adopt-A-Newbie, Trades, and Vines. Trades and Vines are an unbeatable low tech way to get started in live music collecting. In "Trades" there are often "freebies" offered just to share and send out good karma. In "Vines" you can sing on to a Vine and when it's your turn the person before you sends you a package with CDs and/or DVDs and you copy them and send the origianls on to the nest person after you on the vine. Easy Peasy! http://www.allmanbrothersband.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=XForum&file=index&gid=21 Here's a few more good links to get started if you are ready to start a journey. Just beware, it is VERY addictive! Bit Torrent Clients and Info I use ABC but uTorrent and Vuze (formerly Azureus) and BitTornado are popular. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_(protocol) http://www.dessent.net/btfaq/ http://www.bittorrent.com/help/guides/beginners-guide Some Music Archives http://wiki.etree.org/ http://www.archive.org/details/audio http://www.archive.org/details/etree http://bt.etree.org/ Dime doesn't always accept new users, but it's a GREAT site http://www.dimeadozen.org/ The Traders Den is another Great site that I frequent. They have some GREAT FAQs there about Bit Torrent and suggestions for BT clients to use and where to find LEGAL music. Check out the info on BnPs, Vines, Trees, and Loops. These are ways to trade and aquire free live music and vodeo via US mail without the risk having to learn all about Bit Torrent. http://www.thetradersden.org/ FLAC is a common "Lossless" format for CD quality music shared on the net. You may also find SHN files. http://flac.sourceforge.net/ http://userpages.umbc.edu/~hamilton/shnfaq.html In addition to CDs, there are tons of DVDs out there too. Great Vintage concerts that were filmed by an audience menber or a PROfessional and may have been broadcast on TV or the original, or a copy, or a copy of a copy, etc. (this is where you will see the term "gererations" to describe how many generations from the origianla copy is). I've found great, rare, old video of most of my favorite bands such as The Eagles, James Taylor, The Who, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, The Allman Brothers, The Greatful Dead, Jethro Tull, and the list goes on and on and on. Now all this is pretty much Windows PC specific, but the general idea applies to MAc, I just have necer had a MAc and don't know specifics. I did read the Vuze (formerly Azureus) has an osx version for Macs. Have Fun!
  19. Well, I had today off and thought I'd work more on the bike. It was a good day for me. I've got pics of my "firsts"... 1. Installed an extra power port in trunk. Plan to install another below passenger left leg but had to order the plug to get a water proof one. 2. Installed the round vents in my windshield. This was a bit nerve racking for me because I didn't want to ruin the windshield. It was actually pretty easy though and turned out nice. I have them a little more toward the center than some I've seen but some reviews I read said you don't get much air when they are more outside...took it for a spin and get a little bit of air...nothing too spectacular but enough help on 110 degree days. 3. Pulled the trailer. Finally got the trailer tagged and road ready. I've never pulled a trailer before with the RSV, so I took it out on the road for a little bit then came back and put the wife on to see how it rides 2up. All in all it did well. We road it around town for about 25 miles and took it on the highway. Pulled straight and no big issues. 4. Tested out our new Scala Rider Q2 Multiset bluetooth headsets on this ride. They worked pretty well. We sometimes had a hard time connecting via intercom but I think that's more our learning curve than the device. We also connected our phones to them and received phone calls while riding. Wife said she couldn't even tell I was on a motorcycle even though I was going about 55 at the time. All in all a great day. We are just about ready for our 2700 mile trip in June. Next step, load up the trailer and pull it around to ensure I'm comfortable with the extra weight.:cool10:
  20. Our new 86 is a bit tall. Not dangerously tall, Tom is not quite flat footed, but the weight makes it a bit scary if the rider can't stand over the bike and have complete control. Is there a way to bring down the rear of the bike by say 2 inches? Thanks! Ginny in Denver-ish
  21. bought a 2000 venture last fall and got a chance to get out with the wife to ride. she told me that the backrest seemed to vibrate a slight bit that was irritating. she said the 82 goldwing didn't do that so wondering if something may be wrong. thanks larry
  22. Today was a productive day! Got the J&M Headsets put in both helmets and the GW vent in my stock windshield. The headsets were a breeze. The vent not so much! It wasn't making the hole that was a problem it was getting the vent to fit. Had to thin down the mounting surface a bit to make it work. It's a bit scary to chop a hole in the windshield but my girl was all ready to order the F4 if I screwed up. So either we were going to have a vent! As for the headsets...Holy Smokes!! Why didn't we do this sooner? My girl was giggling the whole time cause we could actually talk. NO MORE HAND SIGNALS! Got a bit of wind moise but we were running with out any windsock so I hope that will improve with some tweaking. If not we will have to invest in Mic-mutes. I really just wish there was a quicker way to get to comm volume. That would make it much easier to use. But all and all we are happy with todays projects. So what do I get to tinker with next? Frank
  23. Beth and I received some bad for us news yesterday, our tenants are moving out on June 1st....so we won't be able to make it to maintenance day in Ohio. THAT SUCKS! MD is the trip that I look forward to every year more than anything....I am NOT a happy camper. We are going to have to stay home and prep the rental unit for rent:confused24:......we need to rent it out quick, the payments are a bit of a killer. I shudder when I think of the clean up involved....I had let them paint the master bedroom...it's one ugly color, and they did an ugly job of it.....geesh! So...no MD lunch, no MD renewing friendships and making new ones, no partying at the Comfort Inn with all you crazies, dang it, no cheaper than Canadian priced wine, no getting the heck away for a weekend. Gonna miss meeting Aussie Annie and Quickie....er, I mean Quickstep...did I mention I'm not a happy camper....this is worse than snow! Just a wee bit of history then....when Beth:bighug: and I met, she lived 4 blocks up the street, we married, moved away. Her house sold, mine didn't, bottom fell out of the real estate market along with everything else. We decided to get a larger home when we moved back. It's been a battle with tenants ever since, the market is not good here in Windsor, and selling just isn't in the cards right now due to being locked in on the mortgage and the fees to get out of it are huge. In a nutshell..I guess that's it without a whole lot of boring, if not already BORING details. So...have some extra fun while you're all there at Don's, and think of us while you're doing it! We are going to miss out big time, $#@#$%%% it. gunk:depressed:
  24. Yammer hasn't been on since the 14th, which isn't normal. (I know, normal is relative on this site) But he had been having trouble with his gut. Told him to stop eating that stuff that was making it worse. Just a bit worried about him. Figured you might have heard from him. I know he's been to the hospital a few times for this. Margaret
  25. http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/04/17/tennessee.missing.woman/index.html?eref=mrss_igoogle_cnn Hope this link works. Just figured with as many members as we have here that someone may be able to help out. Shaun
