  1. Hey guys, I rode this Rally last weekend on my '86 VR. It was up against modern bikes ... BMW, FJR, ST1300 etc. Ignore the politics on this site and just enjoy the story ... It was fun http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/09/27/1020374/-Red-Dirt-on-My-Tires-aka-I-Went-to-McAlester-and-Burst-a-Balloon!
  2. I own a 07 RSTD with 21K and I'm trying to compare some of the bikes features with past bikes I have owned. It seems like I do not hear my cooling fan run, or it is real quiet. I also have never seen the temp light on either. On my last bike which was a VTX 1800 you could definitely hear and feel the fan moving air when it would come on. I live in South Florida and the fan would come on any time you spent much time stopped and also when I would pull it into the garage and leave the ignition on.
  3. Here's a question to everyone I've been trying to reason out in my head for quite some time... When you compare the RSTD or RSV 1300's to other types of bikes with v-twins that are said to have 1300 or higher cc's, what are we really comparing. I understand what 1300 means, just like I understand what 1700 means - but when you include the fact that the RSTD's and RSV's are 4 cylinder engines, what difference does that make? Should I feel uncomfortable talking about the power of my bike with a buddy who has a 1700cc or with another friend that has a 96ci? Are we talking about tourqe or horsepower or both or what? I would really like to have some ammunition in my back pocket so I can fire back at them when they say my bike is ONLY 1300cc's. My RSTD has their bikes beat on comfort but what about performance. What are everyones thoughts? I hope my question makes sense.
  4. Here is the breakdown for those that are interested. Bikes.........................49 By car.........................2 Bodies.......................77 Bikes droped @ Vogel.......1 x 2 Coolers raided by bears.....who knows? Park Ranger encounters.....0 :clap2: Bike breakdowns.............1 There are likely more interesting numbers to be shown, but these are all I have the figures for. Feel free to add to the list.
  5. We finally made it home at 3:45, should have been home sooner but, we had to do some vehicle swapping........Paula's Honda developed transmission problems. We had to stop and pull both our bikes off the trailer and put the Accord on the trailer. Jamie and I didnt get a chance to ride together at Vogel, but we did get to make the hot ride home together on the bikes. Its probalby was a good thing we took them off the trailer because when we backed Jamies off the trailer it went through a rotten board right where mine had been sitting. All in all it worked out pretty good, got the car home without a tow truck and we got to ride.
  6. Of course I forgot the lock in the front wheel, put her on the side and destroyed my speedo wire...unbelivable. Does anyone know which speedo wires work on our bikes from other models? Looked for XVZ1300TD and could find none but plenty for other Yamahas, should fit anyhow I guess but which ones?
  7. Hello, this is my first post. I am looking at a 2005 RSTD with 24K on it. It has a complete custom paint job, quadzilla fairing, hard bags a tour trunk, Supertrapps, K&N pods and probably every other thing you can think of. Here is my question... I am 5'8" tall with a 29-30" inseam. Yea.. I am a short guy. I have had many bikes over the years and although I feel more comfortable on smaller bikes I prefer the big touring bikes. Regarding big bikes.. I have owned 2000 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500FI 2001 Honda Valkyrie 1990 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic I sold the Valkyrie because I just couldn't flat foot the bike even after I had the seat shaved. I even dropped it once with my wife on it trying to park. I fit on the Vulcan 1500FI perfectly but I sold it because it has spokes and I got a flat on a rear tire once that took 9 hours for a tow truck to come. No more spokes for me. I also fit on the Ultra Classic perfectly after I cut down the seat. I sold it because it had an electrical issue and it was starting to leak. Great bike though. I checked out this 2005 RSTD. The original owner put 20K in to it. Its absolutely beautiful. I sat on it and I could flat foot the bike. I was shocked because the bike has gel inserts in the seats. It just didn't feel as heavy as the Ultra Classic or the Valkyrie but from what I have read its a bear for low speed maneuvering and it does weigh every bit as much as those bikes weigh and I will say.. its enormous!! I am concerned about things like backing into spaces. It was very difficult wih the Ultra Classic. That bike also felt very top heavy. So.. what I am asking is... and I know this is a fairly subjective question, is the 2005 RSTD all loaded up with a fairing and a tour trunk too big of a bike for a short guy? The reason I am asking is because before I bought the Valkyrie fellow riders told me that it doesn't matter about the size or my size.. I will get use to it. I joined the Valkyrie forum and found out that 90% of the owners were all big guys... 5'-10" to 6'-5" tall and that most of the short guys like me were scrambling around trying to find ways to lower the bike or the seat. I never did get used to that bike. Any insight or comments for a potential buyer are appreciated.
  8. I have access to the valves on my 83 Venture to check the clearance. My question is that I cant get the feeler guage between the cam lobe and the shim.I have rotated the cam on the low side. Are the valves just too tight or am I doing something wrong.I have worked on bikes for years and do all my own repairs. This is the first time I have worked on a shim and bucket desighn.I have a shim kit.
  9. I don't know what to do now I have been looking for a while for a non-Goldwing touring bike. Started looking at 1600 Kawasaki Nomads and really liked the features and the look of the bike. So this week I drive my VTX 1800 C over to the dealer and drive an 05 Nomad, what a pooch. Then after talking with owners and several dealers I'm convinced a RSTD/Venture is the bike for me. My problem is I have had problems even seeing one of the bikes to set on. I found a leftover 09 RSTD in Naples FL and drove down there this morning and sat on it. Now I know it is the bike for me, but when I look at many adds of bikes for sale they state they have had new clutches installed. This concerned me due to the bikes having less than 30k on them. Putting a new clutch in a VTX is almost unheard of, so I joined this site to find out about clutch issues. Guess what I come across, a thread about the whinning noise, and what I'm hearing is if the owners knew about the whine issue they wouldn't have bought the bike and now I'm I have now clew what to start looking at in a used touring bike. I now own a RSTD 07 and am enjoying it! BTW, I was required to were a helmet when test driving the bike and heard no whine what so ever but now I have it home and without a helmet I hear a wine at different RPM/Speed yet it isn't loud enough to cause me a lot of grief. I do plan to have it checked out before the warranty is gone which is Nov. of 2012. Any suggestions of when I should approach the Dealer with the clutch basket issue, now or later near the end of warranty?
  10. Got back from Pontiac Car club Car Show in Simcoe Ontario last night with a third place win with my 2000 Roadstar Silverado -out of 6 bike entered in show,There were 4 sport bikes and a on/off road like scooter which was chopped and lowered.Got fair judging I think as I didn't think I would even got a second look competing against the more popular Sport Bikes that everyone usually likes.
  11. Couldn't make it to Cody but down the road from me was the 16th annual Bikes and Bods event so I went there. Here are a few pictures. I was more interested in the Bods then the Bikes.
  12. I haven't dug into the new 88VR yet...(took my wife for a ride today and she likes the ride better than the 83 or 84. One thing I have noticed....when the bike is hot I have NO ISSUES with slow starter syndrome that plagued both the older bikes. Is this probably because the PO fixed something (4 brush starter or 4 gu wire or better ground ala dingy's mod) Or Did they make some changes and improvements to correct the problem at the factory?
  13. I have been through alot of posts here and I am seriously thinking of picking up a RSTD or RSV. for the last several years I have been riding a Harley wide glide. I like it enough, but I am now in the market for something a little more comfortable. I have owned everything from Gold wings to sport bikes to on/off road bikes. I was considering buying a new Road King or Electra Glide, but they start out at 21 grand w/no extras. Seems a little expensive for what you get. So here is the situation I am in. A Harley/Honda/Yamaha dealer an hour North of here has an 07 RSTD sitting on the floor with 22 miles on it. I put 15 of those on test driving it. I believe these sold new in 07 for around 14k and change. They have it marked down to 11,300 and I feel like they may come down a little more. The bike is a 3 year old "new" bike. How do you tell what it is worth? I am also somewhat concerned that it will seem like a big bulky lumber wagon compared to my WG, but then it is a tourer. Has anybody here regretted trading in a WG or something similar and been bored with the RS? I am attracted to the RSTD because it seems stable on the highway, has a nice big seat and backrest for my wife, and if I am alone i can take off the windshield and backrest real easily. I was shopping for a bike with EFI, but I am into 70's Hondas so multiple carbs and synchronization doesn't scare me too much. Also, a 5 year unlimited mile warranty doesn't hurt either. I am also a big fan of customizing my bikes with pipes and chrome. It seems there are alot of options for RS's. Is that the case? Thanks for taking a look at this post. Sorry I am all over the map with my questions. Erik
  14. Traded the 2003 for a 2009 hold over. The Venture is still one of the best bikes for the price.
  15. I am finishing up the electrical wiring for a trailer. The trailer has independent turn signals and all lights are LEDs. I have read many of the threads about hooking up to the bike's electrical and notice almost all talk about tapping into the wiring under the seat. I have an 08 RSV and my question is: has anyone tapped into the harness behind the licence plate? I was going to make 2 into 1 water proof bullet connector adapters so not to have to splice into wires for the bike's female trailer plug. (running, brake, 2 turn signals, then a ground) and if anyone has Pros or Cons as to why one hook up is better or worse / under the seat vs behind the licence plate, it will help me decide. (i wired my gold wing up to the harness behind the rear tail light cluster and never had any issues) Thanks, Shamue
  16. Robin and I are headed to Morro Bay on Thursday and I wanted to use a one step detailer on the bike before the trip. I've been using Original Bike Spirits because its cheap and does a ok job. I'm out, so I go to the local shop and they don't carry it. I find this MrMoto for $7.95 a can and ask the guy behind the counter if its any good. He asks several guys there, but they have never heard of it or tried it. They all recommended the S-100, which is $14.00 a can. I figure that at $7.95 a can I'll give it a try. This stuff is great! The spray is much more refined and is easy to control. A little bit goes a long way and polishes to a great shine. The can says it works best on black bikes, which is good for me as all of my bikes are black. If you are limited on funds like me, I really recommend this product.
  17. Riding my bike home from work yesterday I came across a maroon / black venture with out of state plates. I thought it might be someone from here riding in for the meet at Randy's tonight so I waved at him and we pulled in to a gas station to chat. He was actually riding around the southeast just seeing sights and stopped over here to ride the 421 Snake. We talked about the bikes, mods I have done to mine and of course I had to tell him about Venturerider.org and that here is where I got the info to do the stuff I've done. Maybe we'll see him around, I'm terrible with names, but I believe he said his name was Rich.
  18. I did not realize that all Yamaha ATVs worldwide are built in the USA. http://www.bizjournals.com/milwaukee/news/2011/05/18/yamaha-adding-hundreds-of-us-jobs.html I sure wish I could just walk into the Yami distribution center that is almost walking distance from where I work to get the parts I need. But NOOOoooooo, They have to ship the part from my back yard halfway across the country so that someone else can ship the parts back where they came from. Now if we can just get the big bikes made here.........
  19. These bikes keep cropping up. http://gl1800riders.com/forums/showthread.php?t=285699 Instead of a GW, I may just have to buy one of these one day.

    Great Day

Just got back from the "Ride For Life" on Vancouver Island. 12 hour day but great weather and about 800 to 1000 bikes out. Raised a lot of money for Prostate Cancer research.
  22. Last July we buried my mother in law. About a week later, some old friends of ours lost their 14 year old son to a gun accident. He was a good kid, and had many friends. The funeral was huge. Fast forward to April 27th of this year, and we had roughly a dozen tornadoes touch down in our area in a single night, including two EF-4's. Everybody here knows someone that was affected. Chad and Edwienna, Logan's parents, and Billy Jack, a long time local tattoo artist, came up with the idea of a poker run to both memorialize Logan and benefit a family that lost everything in the Glade Spring, VA EF-4 tornado. They did it on short notice, only two weeks, and were able to get over 100 bikes to come out for the ride. At the end of the day they were able to present the benefit family with over $2000 in much needed cash. Everybody had a good time, and all bikes made the ride with both wheels down (except for one parking lot drop when a divot in the asphalt caught a front tire - no damage, though). http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e330/rentalguy1/Logans%20Run%202011/DSC00501.jpg (some of the bikes gathering at Billy Jack's Tattoos before the ride) http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e330/rentalguy1/Logans%20Run%202011/DSC00507.jpg (Panoramic shot of the first stop. We lost 15 Patriot Guard riders here. They had to attend a brother's funeral) http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e330/rentalguy1/Logans%20Run%202011/DSC00508.jpg (Second stop) http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e330/rentalguy1/Logans%20Run%202011/DSC00511.jpg (Pic of the third stop at the local biker bar - this ended up being the longest stop... http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e330/rentalguy1/Logans%20Run%202011/DSC00502.jpg (Just really liked this bike. Rider's son is disabled and in a wheel chair. He had a rack for the chair on the other side.) The wife has always been against motorcycles, and has always pretty much hated that I ride. I'm not sure how, but Edwienna talked her into making this run with us. We went out last week and picked out a helmet for her, and I took her for a short ride on Saturday to let her get a feel for it. Then she made the entire ride with me yesterday. She had a blast! She was amazed by the number of bikes, and really liked it when she realized that bikers make their own damn rules. She thought that it was awesome that we had road guards who would fall out and block traffic at intersections, and the looks on peoples faces when over 100 Harleys rode past. If you think one HD is loud, try 100+ in a line a half a mile long! http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e330/rentalguy1/Logans%20Run%202011/DSC00503.jpg (The wife waiting for the ride to begin. See her pretty pink-flamed helmet on the seat? She insists on calling it a "bucket.") I think she is hooked http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e330/rentalguy1/Logans%20Run%202011/DSC00512.jpg (Had to include a pic of my bike for good measure)
  23. My wife and I went to Quincy il today and sitting at a stop light we had about 20 bikes, all harleys, pass by. We are on the RSV chilling at the red light and they had the green. I waved as I do to ALL bikes. Not a one would lift a finger, not even to flip us off. They looked at us, then turned there heads. Even the wives on the ones riding 2 up turned their noses up I would hate to thing that a piece of equipment made me have such a complex that I would be ashamed to wave at someone riding something not labeled a harley. Next time I get the chance I think Ill ask one of them hard core harley guys to grab a standard tool set and work on his "hog" cause unless it is old school with a springer front end I am betting it has as many foreign parts as my Yamaha
  24. Hi there just wondering if anybody is riding the "Ride to Live" here in Victoria this sunday... I am entered and will be at Steve Drane around 9 am Last year there was around 1000 bikes...should be fun!
  25. Someone local (Iforgot if it's in BC or Alberta) is selling a 2006 RSV and says they have an extended warranty that was purchased over and above the mfg 5 yr that is good thru 2013. I don't believe it's a Yamaha offering but I've asked the seller to let me know more. Anyone heard of such an extended warranty on these bikes?
