  1. Director at gym found out I ride. Son-in-law got big mouth. Anywho he has a hardley softail. Claims the seat kills his softail after a few miles. Claims it has a Corbin on it now. Wants to know if I can steer him towards seat and is the AGM battery for these things the same as a 2nd Gem battery??
  2. Bought my bike 3/2010 battery was kaput! was an old 4 wheeler battery PO put in to make her run. ok fine put a new OEM battery in for $112 from the stealership, ya I know what I got Went out today and nothing... the dash didnt even light up Put on a charger for about 4 hrs at 10 amps and only enough to turn lights on and the dreaded clicking noise... Went to interstate battery and they confirmed it was DOA $77 later I had a new battery. Owner said I should buy one of his battery tenders for $25 and it would turn off and on topping the battery off. Somehing about .075 millamps very slow charge. Said if I did that every time I parked it, that it would extend the life of the battery. Have always been a firm believer in you get what you pay for so.... is a battery tender brand so much better than the ones for $12 or the HF $7 centurion?
  3. Hi all, thanks for letting me post. Bought a 99 royal star venture couple months ago. always had a little problem being "cold natured". Since it's cold, I decided to change oil, etc. and try to chase down problem with starting. It is getting worse. I have run battery down several times. Here is what I know: New plugs, getting plenty fuel, good compression, good battery, everything else seems in order. Pulled rear new plugs and no fire/spark. No loose connections at coils. When bought, key was bent slightly, straightened that out, but ignition never felt correct. Also, it's getting worse as I said, now it wont start at all. Thank you for any help in advance. I am limited on technical knowledge.
  4. Ok, so my 83 Venture started messing up and it seemed like it just might be the battery, but I'm starting to think I was wrong in my initial assesment. It started with the battery voltage meter looking lower than normal, then when I stopped for gas, it would not start back up, turn over slowly then went dark, nothing at all showing up, no fuel pump clicks nothing. I thought maybe a bad connection or the fuse blown but thats not it, anything else it might be? Any help would be appreciated.
  5. Does anyone know if this really works? Found it on Ebay? I expect someone will just say to use the recharger. ZAP-IT® BACK TO LIFE for RYOBI ONE+ NiCD DRILL BATTERY 7.2 9.6 12 14.4 18 VOLT
  6. Ok heres my problem, For 2 years straight now this bike has puked a battery. First was an original honda t type battery and now its a uasa that was installed new in feb. Went to crank the bike 2 days ago and it was dead. Checked the water and refilled with distileed water, jumped the bike and let it idle for close to an hr. BIked cranked back up after I cut it off so figured all is well. Today tried again same thing except water level was good. so put on the trickle charger thinking it just didnt get enough charge as it was showing 11.7 volts after 2 days setting static at 22 degress in the am. Charged for a few hrs and bike cranked wright up with full power. This is the same thing that happend on the first battery too. Heres where i get confused. I put the multimeter on the battery at idle and its charging at 13.4 volts. Brought up the revs( no tach so just brought it up) and ay first the meter went to 20.06 volts and then dropped to 12.6 volts. Ilet it idle again and meter went back up to 13.4 volts. I then did an unscientific test and noticed every time I rev the bike and set the thumb lock to hold it the head light gets a little dimmer. Volt meter also drop back to 12 or so volts every time. Did this multiple times and never seen and thing over 13.4 volts and thats always at idle. I checked the meter on my 91 vr and it showed just over 12 at idle and 14.1 at 3000 rpm so Im thinking meter is good. Round about the same numbers when it was checked on the e-250. So with all this Im thinking either a bad stator or voltage regulater. Any ideas. Help please as this is her bike and Id really like to get it wright for her. She will ride mine but shes scared of the weight . She has a hard time bringing it up to center and then her toes just barely touch. Any ideas are apreciated. Tahnks in advance David
  7. Just a reminder of how much these things like plenty of juice to run right. "Brown Sugar" was getting to not want to start as good as she used to and running crappy til she warmed up good. I saw that Advance Auto had a great deal on their AGM batteries and grabbed one for less than 60 bucks.(Thanks Dale) I went ahead and installed it in "Brown Sugar" Already got one in "Ugly" Long story short although the old battery was still working with the new one I can hardley get my finger off the button quick enough before she starts. And no more waiting for her to warm up. She is ready to go as soon as started. :think:Wonder if I could get one of these for the Warden???
  8. OK so I have the red warning light flashing and the battery icon lit. PO said it was cuz he installed an aftermarket "maintenance free" battery which does not accept the sending unit for electrolyte level. Read the thread explaining how to bypass with a resistor. Tried both 1k ohm and 2.2k ohm resistors with no success. Ayone have any other suggestions?
  9. As I get things together to do my fuse block install, various relay bypasses and, hopefully, repair of my ignition switch, I noticed something in a couple of other threads on the subject. When someone talked of installing a fuse block next to the battery so that accessories can be run off that rather than off the battery terminal, there were a couple of suggestions to put an in line fuse between the battery and new fuse block. Why? I mean, it is a fuse block - don't those fuses give you the protection you need? Why have a fuse between the battery and fuse block? There may be a good reason, but I just don't see it. Anyone? Andy
  10. Been having battery issues lately. Battery is due, actually overdue, for replacement however it has been good enough to start the bike twice in a row but not three times without a good run in between. About 4 days ago it would not start after work. Mary came and jumped it for me and I have spent the last few days at her place in town so I would not be stranded outside the city and could get to work. Today I'm off work and I was planning on getting a new battery. Started the bike on its own in the morning as would be normal. It was running well on half choke at 2500 RPM for perhaps 5 minutes when it dropped to about 1200 RPM. Took the choke off and it seemed stable at that RPM but after a few minutes the engine just quit. Mary arrived about that time so we hooked up the jumpers to her vehicle and it turned over really well but would not start. Don't have a freaking clue what is wrong with it. While it was idling it was smooth and was charging well, volt meter read just under the 15 v line. Bike is currently on the street in Victoria.. nowhere to work on it there. Gotta either ride it or tow it home but after that not really sure where to start. Almost anything could be wrong with it. Will get a new battery today. Perhaps the fuel pump quit. Possibly idled long enough to empty the bowl? Didn't overheat. Any thoughtful suggestions other than dynamite would be very helpful.
  11. I just happened to be looking on ebay and I saw some very familiar parts on there and when I saw the battery cover with the stickers I new it was my bike that the insurance company totaled in Ga. If you see the 86 parts that are tan with stickers on the battery cover that was my bike so if anyone wants to buy the parts I can give a history of them. The engine is for sale also and it does not have 70 something thousand on it because the speedo was in Kilometers so divide that for miles. Tom
  12. I bought my 2002 gen 2 about 4 months ago and the previous owner said it had a new battery , but after a couple of weeks of occassional use its dead flat , tried re-charging but battery would hold a charge even when not connected !! So i guessed dead cell and replaced the battery charged the new battery fully and fitted it. Over the next few days left it on my optimate charger . But for the following two weeks its been in my car showroom where i work , i went to move it today and guess what Dead! it lights the dash but just clicked when i atempted to start . What could be draining her or do these bikes need to live on the optimate chargers ! Cheers Edge
  13. Hey All. Just purchased a 86 Venture Royale in pretty nice shape for a sweet price ($400.00 bones). I drove her home and knew the battery was questionable but i ran it dwn while messin with it? I cant even figure out how to get to the battery! Is there an easy way or is there any place on the bike to quickly jump the battery??? Tnx, RR
  14. So, Saturday I decided to take my 01 BMW F650 GS Dakar out for a ride. Great bike and a lot of fun. The battery'd been fading for the past few months and everytime I'd start out it would "drag" a little and then light off. Well, Saturday I found I'd waited too long-no cranking. That's OK, 'cause it was my own fault for waiting too long. Anyway, got the new battery today and went to change 'em out. Never done that on this bike in the three years I've owned it. Get the manual out. OK, let's see, unlock trunk bracket and remove trunk, unlock and remove tailpiece, remove seat, remove right front TURN SIGNAL(?) (4 bolts), remove right side trim (5 bolts), remove center trim piece (2 bolts) and voila, there's the battery! What the ?? Must be getting old, 'cause I remember doing a ring job on an H2 750 Kawasaki and only having to pull 18 bolts to drop the exhaust and pull the Heads and Cylinders!! It's like the little elves in the black forest hung the battery on piano wire and then built the bike around it. No wonder BMW service is so pricey:whistling:
  15. Hello everybody. I've just bought a 1986 venture and i need to know what the five fuses on top of the battery are for and what size they are. There's nothing marked on the plastic cover or on the owners manual. I'm going to replace the old glass fuses with new atc ones Tks. Gus....
  16. Not to be confused with chicken parts..... Me and my riding has been nothing short of a trainwreck this summer. When the heat and humidity get beyond a point, I have to pretty much hang up the chaps because I just can't seem to breathe well enough to go; that or I just don't feel good enough to go. The flip side of that is that when the temp backs off a bit, it's usually because of rain and thunderstorms and MORE humidity. Anyway, that story is to set up this story! Because I haven't gotten out much and because I didn't get good results of my last 2 Battery Tenders, I didn't have anything keeping the charge up on the bikes. The GW has had an ongoing little issue with off idle performance and has been sitting basically all summer, since spring. The RSTD sat for about a month and a half, early in the year and had to be jumped to get it started. Recently, it sat for about a month for reasons I mentioned earlier and I knew that I was looking at another round of "fun with batteries." Well, the weather had been really crappy and I had done some late night research into battery maintainers. Based on what I found, I decided to buy a "Battery Minder", having the anti-sufation circuit in it. It will charge at I believe it's 1.3 amps up to 14.1V then revert to a float charge mode to keep the battery up; in this mode it will periodically hit the battery with specific hi frequency AC current to accomplish the anti-sulfation (the sulfation being what kills the batteries when they sit for long periods). I had been told that if a motorcycle battery (wet cell or other) goes dead, it's basically toast and has to be replaced. Now, the new Battery Minders I bought had a battery condition monitor included with one of them. They say to check the battery and if you get no indication the battery must be replaced. The RSTD had the absolute minimun indication, the GW battery had none! Well, not being one to just jump out there and drop $60 or $70 on another battery for the GW, I went ahead (in conflict with the instructions, I might add) and hooked it up and plugged it in. Ditto the one for the RSTD. The RSTD charged for about 24 hours and went to float mode. A day later, I felt good, the weather felt good, so I disconnected the Battery Minder and she fired right up and I went on my merry way. The Goldwing showed charge state for a full 2 1/2 days,(they recommend no more than 72 hours) then went into float mode just like the doctor ordered. What floors me is that the last time the battery on the GW went dead from sitting, like that, I had to replace it. That's why I was going to at least try to charge it up before I sprung for a new one! The battery is up full and with the BatteryMinder it should stay in top condition for a long long time (riding occasionally wouldn't hurt either, but that's a different discussion) Bottom line......I am sold on the BatteryMinder! I will not use another brand of maintainer again, unless the company itself just goes away; then whatever I get will have antisulfation or I won't have it....period. The proof is in the performance and the BatteryMinder has that in spades, IMHO! (and FWIW Northern Tool had them for ~$40)
  17. I have a 2008 Venture...I'm very frustrated right now with my dealer trying to diagnose my bike. I'm on my third battery in 8 months. They put the third one in a couple of days ago and from the conversation I think mostly because they don't have a clue. What has been happening is that if I don't ride for a couple of weeks the battery was dying...so I thought there may be a draw on the battery...The dealer said that he was only seeing about a 1.2 Miliamp draw coming from my GPS set up. At first he told me that would drain my battery in two weeks...then when he sent me home with my battery charged back up...it was dead the next day. They did all their troubleshooting and finally they said that it was another bad battery. They put the battery in a couple of days ago...I went riding today and when I got back I noticed a noise coming out of the battery...it sounds almost like its sizzling. I don't think that it should do that...It is still making the noise and the bike has been in my garage for over 3 hours now. I asked about the voltage regulator and they told me they checked it...any suggestions at this point? Thanks...Dee
  18. Any recommendations for what battery to buy for my 83 Venture. My battery passes all the tests at the auto store but won't crank the bike. Thanks Steve
  19. My 1999 RSV has had a lot of work done to it since I purchased it last year. The original owner let it sit for a couple of years. Upon going through it I had to repair wiring in the fairing due to mice as well as replace air filters with the same problem (MICE). I had the carbs rebuilt and synched..replaced all worn parts along with all the fluids, new tires, brakes amongst add-ons. I relayed the passing lights and installed a mic-mute along with a GPS. I also put a small fuse block in for the accessories with a relay. Everything is on ignition hot. I replaced the battery with a new fully charged one. It has been on for about two months. Yesterday I get it out for a ride and when I went to start it, it wouldn't..I hadn't ridden it for two weeks or so and a keep a battery tender on it. It fires up usually on the first hit of the switch.. It seems as though the battery didnt have enough juice to start it. I used another battery to jump start it and it started just fine. I rode it for about 40 miles to a friends house. When I tried to restart, the same thing. Had to jump it again. Once it fires, it runs great. I brought it back home and cut it off. I waited a few and it fired right back up only it was a little weak. Checked the battery and it was 12.9 volts. A few minutes later no start...So my question is battery, starter, stator, starter relay? I also have an oil leak that only drips after I have ridden it for a while. It quits after a few drops. Comes from the left side but cant find its origin...Thoughts? The help is greatly appreciated...
  20. So I decide to take a little ride tonight to enjoy the cooler weather. Made several stops along the way. No issues at any point. I stop at a little outdoor concert in Kingwood for about 30 minutes. Get back on the bike to head home, turn the key, the dash lights up for just a second then goes black!!! I check the kill switch, try a few more times. A couple more times it lights up for just a second or two. One of the times I quick hit the starter, but no go. I left it there and got a ride home from the wife. Now I'm going to head back with some tools. What should I be looking for? Battery has been on a battery tender off and on all summer. Can I try to jump it from my car??? Help!
  21. Since I had the brilliant idea to change jobs and am now working nights, it sure would be nice to have a reliable starting bike in the mornings when it gets cold out there. When it gets cold she acts like a car with a dead battery, makes a half hearted attempt to turn over and stops, it'll do that again when I hit the starter button again. Then if i hook up the charger to jump it it'll turn just fine, still hard to start though. It has done this since I've owned it. battery is good upgraded battery cables starter contact was clean and dry but I pulled it loose and sanded the cable, washer and nut. 12.67V with ignition off 11.7V with ignition on 10.6V with starter engaged 13.37V with 2000RPM Like I said, don't want to be sitting in the parking lot at 0630 when I'm dead tired and not be able to start the bike when it's 30 degrees out there. I do have a set of louvered inserts I can slip into the side panels if anyone thinks that'll help. Thanks in advance
  22. With a good amount of folks with electrician or electrical backgrounds thought I would post this and see what you guys think. 1st I will say the response I was given I think is a bunch of b.s. and just a gimmick to get you to buy a new charger unneccesarily. I currently have an LG ENV3 and I was looking at the LG Revolution. I asked the rep about the car charger I have will work with this smartphone. She removed the cover and the ports were the same so in my mind it should work. She said no as the car charger I have doesn't produce enough juice to charge the battery. She made some comment about it might even cause premature battery wear. Every single smart phone review that I have read no matter which one it is, all say smartphone battery life is bad, so again don't really see how I am at a disadvantage here. So I also posted this question on the verizon wireless facebook page and here is one response I got "Because the charger isn't strong enough to charge a smartphone. All chargers go up to a certain wattage, and a smartphone takes a higher wattage." So to my question is what is your take on the wattage comment?
  23. Friend (100 miles away) who has a V-Star (1100 I think) and has been running premium exclusively. He mostly rides it to commute (5 miles, maybe one way) back and forth to work. Talked to him tonight and he is complaining that he is having to jump it off and it runs like crap! The AutoZone battery is only a year old and he has not been using the tender that he has. I told him that with his short trips the bike cannot recharge completely, so he is gonna start using the tender. I wonder if the low battery could be contributing to the rough running? My main question for you V-Star riders, is what grade gas do you use? My friend tells me that the owners manual says "86 octane or higher". I would guess that 87 would work, but then again I don't have a V-Star.
  24. I have a 2005 Tour Deluxe with the original battery (bought Oct, 2004). The bike has a touch over 24,000 miles and is for sale here and in other places. Whether it sells or not, I would hate for the buyer or me to get stranded when the battery dies. I hate to fix something that is not broken, and this original battery works just like it did from day one - but its days have to be over/near over. What is the BEST battery I can replace this OEM battery with? Thanks. Jim
  25. Where is the relay located on a 2009 RSV. Mine has been replaced by a non self cancelling and I want to put the original back in. The service manuals on this site seem to indicate that it is under the rider seat? If so, it must be under the battery then? Thanks
