  1. Chatting with a non-internet buddy with a 2007 RSV with about 30,000 odd KMs on it, who described an odd infrequent issue while starting his bike.. Once in a blue moon, when starting his bike, either hot or cold, the engine will turn over once but not continue turning, not getting in that first complete turn of the engine (best he can describe it is like the battery just has enough juice to get that one turn only and dies but it has a full charge..). When this happens, his trip odo will reset.. almost like he disconnected the battery, but the radio presets stay intact. A second press of the starter switch will always start the bike every time like nothing's happened, the bike starts fine like normal, it runs fine, his mileage is average, bike has lots of power.. But he says it's that once in a blue moon event that has him puzzled.. probably happened about three times this summer. He can't seem to identify a precursor to the event that might be causing it. The battery checks fine, being less than two years old.. Nothing to do with rain, he's checked the battery connections, checked wiring for anything that might be loose.. but it doesn't happen often enough to be a show stopper.. But could this be an indication of something getting old / weak / ready to fail?
  2. Anybody recall the Thread of a Very Light Weight Battery about 2LBs.
  3. After 4+ years of ownership, the battery in the Venture decided to crap out. I don't know how old the battery is as it was in there when I bought the bike used, but Ive owned the bike for 4 years. I pulled out an Interstate, which is made by Yuasa. Phone calls to the local Yammie and Honda dealers confirmed that a replacement Yuasa was in the $100-110 range, plus tax, title, license, dealer prep fees, hazard pay, environmental fee, disposal fee, walk in the door fee. I thought about ordering one online, but I'd hate to have to deal with any warranty issues through the interwebs so I checked around some more locally. It appeared to me that the "house branded" batteries at Advance Auto and Oreilly's were actually the highly rated Deka batteries with fancy stickers on them. http://www.advanceautoparts.com/1/1/591589-12-volt-sealed-agm-premium-batteries-power-sports-applications-by-magnapower-part-etx20l.html#fragment-1 http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/SSB0/ETX20L.oap?keyword=etx20l Advance list is 109 and Oreilly's was 89.99. I stopped in at Oreilly's and they had it in stock and they allowed me to fondle it. I then inquired about the price. Of course it came up as 89.99 as I expected so I yelled and screamed and rolled around on the floor and they offered to knock $10 off to make me stop. Total out the door was $84 and some change with my old battery as a core. Got home, checked the voltage, 12.5 volts right out of the box, tossed it in the bike and thumbed the starter switch and it fired right off. Peeled the sticker off the box and guess what...
  4. What is the best battery for my 89 VR and besided doing mail order can I purchase it locally in Washington State.
  5. Ok I have BATTERY /charging or lack of it on my bike.. I've checked the battery it's good, I've checked and there is NOTHING drawing...& 13.5 -14.2 charging.. Well wife & I went a cple day ride & sure enough we go out Sunday morning & the bike wont crank....135 miles from home and NO1 round I do what any man would do.... I walk acoss to KMART and by a 500 cold cranking jump box...and hope n pray it is charged enough to JUMP the bike off...well it does...we ride almost 130 miles & i stop for gas kill the bike fill it up & it wont start... i was like WTH... jump it off.... well we stop several times after and bike cranks.. I go out this morning NOTHING....now my battery isn't 6 months old... matter of fact it's the 2nd battery i've bought in a yr .....now I'm looking at a HIGH output stator or open to suggestions.... uggggg don't know what or where to turn....
  6. The story: Left the Ipod on the bike last week. Yesterday the battery was dead. I put a slow charge for 6 hours on the battery and all seems well today. The problem: How do I reset the Audio Controller (left handlebar) so that it will allow me to play my Ipod using the Aux jack on the cassette player? I know the answer is probably very simple but the last time I did this was a few years ago and my memory fails me....and the Service Manual is NO help at all !! Regards and thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this! Boomer....the not-so high tech guy.
  7. I just finished replacing the stator on my 87 VR. Thank God for the volt meter on the dash, it allowed me to notice that I wasn't getting charging voltage before it was too late, and I rode the bike home on battery power. What a pain this job is! The stator part is typical - remove the cover, replace the stator, deal with the little rubber plugs where the wires go through. But, as has been noted, the screws holding the stator inside the cover are SUPER TIGHT with Loctite. The gasket was like a piece of granite bonded to the cover - very difficult to remove. And finally, there's the little cavity behind it with all the oil leak opportunities. Ya know, behind the cosmetic flange on the bearing cover behind the stator cover? Mine was an oily mess. I found on this fine website that oil can leak from either of the wire plugs in the stator cover, the gear selector switch, the shift shaft, the clutch slave cylinder installation, or the gaskets themselves. And all of these are packed into a tiny area too small to see, much less work in, which was difficult to clean out because my engine was sitting open with two covers removed and I didn't want crap to get in there. There's also 4 wire bundles that go through there, plus a convoluted shifter design with TWO linkage rods, 4 heim joints and a jackshaft! No wonder the shifter on this bike is not the smoothest I've ever used. I was pretty sure my leak was not coming from the clutch cylinder. That left the gaskets, gear switch o-ring, wire bundles and shift shaft as possibilities. I was already replacing the gaskets and redoing the wire bundles. The gear switch o-ring was low-hanging fruit, so I did it. As others reported, I found one of three retaining screws missing and another loose. Re-installed with Loctite. I did not do the shift shaft seal because, frankly, it looks like a total pain to do and I didn't wanna! I am hopeful that the leak was not there. Well, the good news is that it runs great, charges great, but dunno yet about leaks. I installed the hi-output Rick's stator. They don't list it, but I learned about it here; it is in their Hot Shot series. They don't really give any specs on what to expect in terms of increased performance. I can tell you that by 2000 rpm it's generating 14.75 volts at the battery, even with the driving lights on (stock regulator). Even by 1500 rpm with the driving lights and heated grips on it's getting up over 13V, where charging is starting to happen as opposed to battery drain. I never drive it below 2000 rpm except idling at signals. I don't have any "before" data to compare it to, but my impression is that I am getting more charge at lower rpms. I know that before, if I had my driving lights and heated grips on and was running around town I would gradually deplete the battery. Thanks to all who have contributed to stator and oil leak info on this site. That info makes all the difference when doing the job. Happy New Year, Jeremy
  8. Is this battery still the best choice? The connector looks like a side mount. My OEM is a top mount. I can get one locally from East Penn for $165cdn. I need to replace my battery and research on here seems to point to the Deka as the best choice, mind you most of the info is a few years old. Thanks.
  9. whats up with the venture... I know I"ve read others who have issues with batteries... I've had my bike 11 months & already gone thru my 2nd battery... yes i have a maintainer but if it wont hold a charge when am I going to be out riding and it quits? is there something I can do ? or something I should be doing?
  10. My 84 has been running great all summer long, until last week. It has sat for about a week, due to rain and the like. Pulled the Tender, and it fired right up. The LED Volt meter did not lite and the "Battery" showed in the bikes display window. The bikes volt meter was in the middle of the scale. The bike ran and idled smoothly. I reved the engine several times nothing changed. LED volt meter was still out and the "battery"lite was on. After about 10 minutes running, the volt meter fired up and settled into 14 volt charge indicator and the battery lite went out. Could this be a bad LED Volt meter? Could it be shorting and causing the battery lite to come on? Is it a bad battery? Stator? It does something to ya riding a bike and the red light is flashing and the battery box is on. It sat for three days and today it did the exact same thing. :detective:Does anyone have any ideas. Saddle_Bag
  11. Im hoping someone here can direct me as to what my problem is.Symptoms: Bike is 2000 mm been starting fine here at home, left last Wed. for road trip to Ark. Got as far as Amarillo Tx. Stopped for fuel would not start had to boost.Dealer just down the road battery 2 years old put new battery in no problem rest of day. Stopped at motel for the night could smell acid occasionally. Bike would not crank next morning. Put battery on charger (nearby gas station) started got as far as next fuel stop would not crank again.Called emergency road service, trailered bike to small bike shop,,in Conway Ark. By the way excellent people there. Warrentied batt. Installed another new batt. Cranks fine. Both places checked charging system said that it was. Made it to Judosinia Ark. Did not use bike till I left on Sat. Evey now and then I would get a whiff of acid. On last fuel stop on way home had to boost. Got home drove bike in garage would not crank.
  12. I'm having entirely too much fun here:bang head::bang head:. Pulled the bike in last week to change the brake pads in back and the caliper sticks, so I ordered a rebuild from Earl and have a hard time bleeding it, but worse I accidentally left the key in the ACC mode and drained the battery. Now, after sitting on a 2amp charge overnight I still can't start the bike!!!:headache: Acts as though there is not enough juice. Battery says 11 amp with the key on, hit the starter and she drops to 7.5 or so and just clicks. I even tried starting her with the charger in start mode and she tries, but doesn't fully turn over. I'm tempted to say the battery is fried but how could this have killed the battery?? Battery was new this past summer. Need some help quick folks, I'm tired of driving the wife's car and the weather's been too nice as well
  13. Just replaced the battery in my 86 VR, I noticed the battery that came out of the bike had a wire coming out of the top of the battery, what does this wire do? The new battery has no wire or a hole for the old wire to go into, do I need to drill a hole? Thanks.
  14. Battery dead this morning! I had been wondering how long she might last!? Been 7yrs and not once did I ever have a problem. When I went for 3 weeks this past month to the Bitterroots of Montana, Canada, Glacier National Park, and back to Tennessee I had thought about installing a new one but I to curious to see just how long the original would go. I usually have my trailer hooked up but I been running led's in those trailer lights since the beginning. I also installed a led rear light after the 1st couple of years! She was a damn good battery Although my morning ride to the Ocoee river did not happen I am glad that she died at home! Batteries Plus has me back on the road again!
  15. Had my 06 fairing laid forward for shock maintenance. When finished I tried to hook the battery back up. The + lead sparked even with the key off and it made a noise like a starter solenoid when the battery is low. Bike won't start and the battery goes dead in a short time. Again this happens with the key off...any ideas?
  16. What size battery should I use in NY 1983 venture? I found a 10 ah battery in there. Doesn't seem to be big enough. Was thinking to getting a 22 ah Did the cable upgrade. Still has a slow turnover. Draws down to the yellow on meter when chanking.
  17. Went out to start the RSV tonight for the first time in about 3 weeks and the battery was almost dead. I put the charger on for about 30 minutes and was able to start up. The battery is only 6 months old. The bike is a 2010. Is this common for the RSV?
  18. I went to start my 07 RSV this morning, all dressed and ready to ride. Starter sputtered, making sounds like dying battery. End of ride. Bike has 33k on it. So here're the symptoms that I've measured so far: Battery open circuit voltage is 12.3 after trying unsuccessfully to start the motor. I put it on my charger, and got a green light after five minutes. Open circuit v now 12.8. I put the battery back into the bike and it cranked normally. I measured the v across the battery with motor running. At idle I get 13.7. At very high engine speed (no tach) I get 13.9. It never gets above 14v, and only varies between those two points, 13.7 to 13.9 at any engine speed. Book says should get above 14v charging, up to 14.5. Does this below-14v output, and the fact that it varies only .2v, point to a stator or regulator problem? Interestingly, I had a year-old battery fail, and also spit battery acid out into the battery box, some of which then dripped down onto my swingarm. It was a Westco. I suspected an overcharging situation then, but if anything, my charging output is lower than it should be. The new Yuasa that replaced it four months ago has worked flawlessly until this morning. I suppose the new Yuasa could be defective, but how odd to have two battery failures within four months? One suggesting overcharge, the other undercharge? Erratic Regulator? I'm checking connections now. Thanks for all help.
  19. Dumb things we do .... I'd wired up my Trailer Isolator and realized I'd wired it to the Aux fuse block I'd installed, which is only live when the key is turned on. Now, the Isolator is supposed to be wired direct to the battery so ... I disconnected it, patched in an in-line fuse, and hooked it to the battery. Then I tested the power connector to the trailer .... NO POWER on any of the connections (run, brake, turn)... WHAT??? I fussed with that for a while, checking this and that ... couldn't understand why no power.... and then it HIT ME ... ! ... I connected the wire to the negative post on the battery :rotfl:!!!
  20. I'm posting this for a friend. 83 venture standard. Bike was not charging the battery. Tested the stator, it was grounded, only getting 5 amps ac, average on all 3 sets of white wires, tested the r/r, it also tested bad with open diodes. He installed a new stator and r/r, both ricks motorsports parts, however he got them from dennis kirk. I don't know if they are the same parts that Rick on this website sells or not. The bike is still not charging. Volt meter reads 12 volts not running, when it is running, it drops to 11.5 volts. Even when running up to 2000 rpms, battery voltage does not go above 12 volts. Just for information; he has a gel battery. I thought I read somewhere that gel batteries do not charge like flooded batteries. Does anyone here have any ideas or something else to look for?
  21. I am going to put in the bypass for the battery level sensor on my '83 VR. I notice that there is already a resistor in the line. It looks factory. Do I remove this resistor when I put the new one in or do I just add the additional resistor?
  22. First problem is the low brake fluid indicator is lit on my dash, checked both reservoirs and they are full, now can they be too full and make it light up, second problem is I replaceD the battery with an AGM battery, therefore the battery level light is on, I bought the 2.2k resistor and placed it inline along with the one that is already there, connected it to the acc. terminal on the fuse block............still lit........whats gives?
  23. Headed out bright and early this morning heading to Newport News with a planned stop to see Earl in Greenville NC. Stopped about an hour out to top off and get some breakfast and the bike would not crank. I should have known something was up when the radio went out but I thought it was the connections inside the fairing so I paid no attention to it. Thought maybe it was the just the battery but after push starting it the neutral light did not brighten up any when I reved it. Made it to within 30 mins of home before it just gave up, had my wife bring me a battery and was able to get home. Once home I checked the voltage and 12.07 VDC not matter if it was reved or not. Since I was already 3 hours behind I transferred all my stuff to the car and off I went will troubleshoot when I get home. I guess I will start with the rectifier and hope that fixes it I really don't want to buy a stator.
  24. Riding home from a 170 mile ride this afternoon, the radio started cutting out, as I hit the back brakes. I made it to a gas station, filled up and no start. so I checked all the wiring, No lose battery bolts, nothing grounded that i can tell. and the battery is some what new. Throw some Idea's at me, please.
  25. How much power/volts does it take to keep the pre-sets alive on the 2nd gen ? Wanting to remove my main battery and put another type in as I am doing some experimenting for the Deka and Odyssey battery's , so I was thinking of making something up to plug into the AUX plug in the fairing to keep them alive while changing out the battery, any tips ? Thanks, Jeff
