  1. Hey everyone, I have a question about XM radios. If you buy a small XM radio unit can you use it in/on both bike and in car/truck? Would you have to buy two antennas to make this happen? I have an 06 Chevy that has Built in XM that I do not use and was wondering if the antenna could be unpluged from the trucks radio and used on the radio that will be used on the bike? Sorry if this sounds crazy, just would like to be able to use one XM radio for both bike and truck. Dennis
  2. I have 2006 Midnight Venture with a broken CB Antenna, is there anywhere I can get a replacement antenna besides the dealer, they want $180.00 for a replacement. I don't use the CB, however I may want to sell the bike, and the original equipment antenna would be needed. Thanks
  3. Someone at Michigan maintenance day asked me where I got my 6"x9" U.S. antenna flag. I ordered it online from http://www.thepropad.com/p-41-antenna-flag-mount-kits-w-6x9-flag.aspx My wife found them on a Google search. They were prompt to ship, and good to deal with. The flags are heavy duty and look like they will resist fraying pretty well. I am happy with the product.
  4. I know there are som ham radio operators here, how many of you have sucessfully mounted your gear to the bike? What mobile radios work well for on the road DX'ing? or even good old 2meter chatter? also what brands do you use for an antenna and how did you mount it? It seems that Diamond does not make any of their no ground plane antennas for 10 meters or 6 meters anymore... what do you use?
  5. Anyone know where I can get an antenna for my 86VR mine broke as I was driving down the freeway.
  6. Ok, can you guess why I have a short red line welt across my face the other day? geesus.. pulled the cover off the bike and wondered what that bright glint of metal was swishing up towards me as the cover let go of the overly bent antenna.. WHAP right up into the face.. When my eyes stopped watering and I picked myself off the ground, I looked around to make sure no one saw me.. Red faced and feeling foolish.. I forgot I had antennas and stowed for the covering of the bike. fun.. embarrassing but funny.. had to share.. (my purpose in life is to make people laugh, hopefully not with too much pain)
  7. Well, here we go again with a stupid CB/AM-FM problem. I tried out the sound system on on my '85 for the first time since I bought the bike (replaced a broken antenna). Radio and CB lights up and all buttons and knobs operate as they should, tape player sounds great, but no CB action at all and reception is almost zero on the AM-FM (as though no antenna). The antenna coax has continuity, both pos. and ground. I'm wondering what component I should check first. Any ideas guys? Come on boys....restore my hearing for me.
  8. Has anyone replaced their CB antenna? What kind did you use and what other parts do you need to do it? I looked at some at a local truck stop but they wont mount directly on to the old mount.
  9. I finally checked my CB antenna out this weekend and discovered I had just as much power going towards the radio as I did the antenna. No wonder it didn't work real well. Anyway I checked the radio with a good antenna on the truck and found about 2.5 watts output. So I am looking for a good place to buy another replacement for the bike. Does anyone have good information where to find a replacement? Probably will go with a Firestick.....
  10. Giving mad props to my home slice Bummer. He's good peeps. Ok now that I got that out.... I want to thank Bummer for helping this past weekend with getting the SWR adjusted on my firestik cb antenna and also for the connector on the firestik am/fm antenna. I was amazed at how easy it is to adjust the swr. Time consuming (especially if you mount the rubber ring on the underside of the antenna bracket ), but easy. Hopefully will be able to pay it forward to someone else soon. Heard some interesting stuff on the cb on the way to work this morning. Guy not happy about a Hopper not being cleaned out apparently. Oh yeah and like you suggested I did call diamondr. Patti said she will check the shop for an extra pin. They did have one and is sending it to me. Jerry.
  11. The antenna on my 89 VR will not tighten down all the way! When it starts to get snug it feels like it lets go! I think I would like to change to a 2 antenna set up ( looks mostly). I've also noticed my CB and Radio stations aren't coming in as good any more. Any suggestions?
  12. My antenna is loose where it threads into the black piece with the chrome bezel piece. I can't get it to tighten or loosen because the whole thing turns, meaning the piece that threads onto the mount itself. Any ideas on how to get it off of there so I can get some loctite on it and thread it back on I don't mind it being loose but am afraid of losing it. Can I get an aftermarket antenna that just goes on the mounting bracket? Thanks, Ross
  13. Before I got the 2006 Midnight this summer, I rode my modded 2005 1100 Vstar a lot.. 80,000 kma in 2 years.. And in those two years I've had a lot of bird strikes while riding. Luckily, the three that hit my person didn't cause me to come off the bike but it hurt like hell. The others that hit the bike left a lot of mess. Most noteably was the pigeon that hit me in the shoulder and exploded in a large puff of feathers that my ride mates ran through.. (The wood pecker story is a whole page in itself.. ; ) And once I got my Venture, I figured my bad luck would follow since it's a bigger bike, a larger target for these birds to hit.. But after 4500 miles, no worries until recently.. sigh. I'm riding along the back road in the lead with my ride buddies in trail when all of a sudden there's a loud sharp WHACK to the back or top of my helmet, scaring the living heck out of me.. I pulled over right away as I had NO idea what had happened.. yep, sure enough, a bird hit the left antenna and it bent all the way back and then snapped forward to strike my helmet with a nice whack.. My buddies behind me saw this happen, the puff of feathers from a small bird and then my jumping out of the seat at being startled by the hit of the antenna.. Good thing they were there to tell me about as I don't think I would have figured it out on my own.. I didn't think the antenna would reach that far.. Go figure.. I don't worry about deer in the road a lot.. its the dang birds I worry about..
  14. On my way home from a dealer (hour away from my house). Got home. Got the kids and got ready to leave again so we can run an errand. The garage door was still open. Got in the car and I noticed something odd looking about the back of my bike, can't quite put my finger on it. Oh I got it, the cb antenna is gone. Must have flown off on my way home. Didn't really matter anyway. CB antenna didn't work and I am doing the Marshall Mod. Got the mounts on Friday and the antennas should be here on Monday.
  15. I have checked a parts fiche. year 1999 lists p/n 4XY88143-00-00. All other years lists p/n 4XY88143-10-00. Does anyone know if I can do a direct swap from a newer model year to a 1999 model year? I am just looking at the top antenna piece above the mounting bracket. Thanks.
  16. Drove down to Coyote Motorsports, in Denver, pulled up right by an 06 Venture. Guy was dropping it off. I told him about the site. Guess we'll see if he stops by. If you do, I said something about the antenna to the owner and he said "It's got a 5 year warranty, of course it's covered". Hope he drops by!
  17. Does anyone have a CB Antenna they're not using or know where to get one? I made the mistake of putting my POW/MIA flag on my CB Antenna and it acted like a wrench and spun it off. Thanks!
  18. Hi I'm new here, and I have a question about replacing the antenna on my 84 VR. I posted this question in a different area, but now I think I should post in the Tech area.Do I need a special antenna for the radio, or will a generic one work? I don't have a CB. If I were to get a CB where would I mount it? Thanks
  19. Looking to add a rack to my trunk what years will fit..how about Honda, H.D., etc.will any others work? Been watching Ebay... any other rack vendors? I have a broken antenna so how about the Marshall Mod , I have read about it , will it give better FM/ CB reception? Not really worried about transmitting as would rather listen. Will the thin Harley style whips , from the ultra classic, work with this set up?
  20. I've just bought an '89 VR, and haven't even had a ride yet (too much snow!). I still don't know much about the bike, but I'm learning much from the forums here. I have a 3' steel antenna (probably original) on the bike that doesn't fold. My bike will be outside in the summer, and so I just bought a cover. Unfortunately, to put the cover on, I need to remove the antenna, which I am figuring will be a pain. This is an antenna for the radio and the CB, and I'd like to keep just one antenna, as I'm unfamiliar with dividing into two. Is there an antenna short enough that it will go under my cover, or is there a fold down adapter that will work with my bike? I went to my dealer but they didn't offer up anything... When hunting around online, what do I need to look for technically speaking?? Thanks so much for any advice that anyone can give!
  21. he guys, on a trip from cincinnati to st louis for a conference, had a great 404 mile ride here, park 07 rsv in parking garage, go to lower cb antenna so that i can cover up and as i pull up on the chrome sleeve the whole antenna comes out!!! so here i am with an antenna in my hand, stuck it back in but haven't fixed yet anyway any ideas such as can i glue the bottom portion in etc, having computor woes here in st louis so may not be able to check back on this post but hopefully so ideas before i leave friday for ohio. thanks Brian d.
  22. Hi CB experts! My CB has been nothing but a headache from start to...well...I haven't finished yet. Broken antenna, bad squelch and volume pots, SWR meter issues and now tuning problems. I installed a Wilson Flex 3' antenna with tunable tip. I like it better than the Firefly (or did like it better) because the Firefly is much fatter, achieving it's light weight by being hollow. I like the thin-ness of the Wilson aesthetically. I have the 203EZ folding mount. My bracket looks different from some I have seen and I think was adapted off something else. I modified it to move the antenna backward 3", placing it above the very back edge of the RH saddlebag so it the lid wouldn't bang into it when removing. The cable was already on the bike. I am intending to use a Firestik AR-1 duplexer/splitter. Went to tune it this morning, thinking this would be a slam dunk - just mess with the tunable tip and be done. Wrong! I was measuring with the splitter out of the loop, just the CB and antenna. SWR was super high, above 3 on all channels, but a little higher on 40 than on 1, so I lowered the tunable tip. Improved slightly. Finally removed the tunable tip entirely and got readings of 1.7 on 1 and just under 3 on 40. Ch 20 was somewhere in between, in the low 2's. Huh? What gives? Now I know that JB (lonestarmedic) used the same antenna on the same bike and got 1.5 at channels 1 and 40, I have something unique going on. I've studied this on the web, and here's what I already checked: - Bracket ground has 0 ohms to bike frame. Supposedly high SWR is caused by a bad ground plane 90% of the time. - Just for yuks, I added a ground wire from the bracket to the frame and SWR improved slightly, 1.5 on 1 and 2.5 on 40. The same happens if I hold the bracket with my hand. - Cable has continuity in the center and in the shield, but no short between the two - like it should be. - Putting splitter in the circuit made it worse - SWR way over 3 across the board. - Performed measurements in an open space. - Connecting the Wilson's "matching transformer" lead to ground made it worse. This makes sense. I don't understand this feature, but Wilson says it will lower the center freqency by 20 channels. My center frequency is already too low; I think it's below channel 1 in fact. - Tried removing fold-down mount - no change. - Double-checked how to connect and use the meter. So where do I go from here? Do I need to start removing material from the tip of the Wilson, even though it's supposed to have the full tuning range in the adjustment? What else? Frustrated, Jeremy
  23. Anyone have a spare one they'll part with??
  24. Hi, I'm posting this in 1st gen tech and also the Audio forum. Sorry for the repeat, but I wasn't sure which would be best. My CB was working OK. I had dual short antennas. I recently switched to a single 3' Wilson Flex fiberglass antenna and a Firestik splitter, which should work better. I got it all hooked up and now the CB is stuck in receive mode whenever it is on. I disconnected the antenna and splitter and it stays in RX mode even with no antenna. It's like the squelch is turned to max sensitivity, but adjusting the squelch doesn't change anything (it used to function normally). It did work, now it doesn't. Timing is conincident with antenna change, but problem is independent of the antenna being connected. What could have happened? Second, I've read that the Firestik splitter/duplexer is very efficient for signal transfer. The CB, while stuck in RX mode, is successfully receiving signals. But they are stronger (voices sound louder) when the antenna is connected directly to the CB, compared to when wired thru the splitter? What gives? Does the "Matching" pot affect receive strength or just transmit? Thanks, Jeremy
  25. Has anyone had any luck trying to shorten their XM antenna wire? Mine was broken in the accident so I figured I had nothing to lose by cutting it shorter and trying to reconnect but it didn't work out for me. Man that is some fine work for these old eyes. I soldered the main wire in the center, covered it with liquid tape, pulled the shielding back over that and soldered it, then used shrink wrap over the whole splice.
