  3. Is it supposed to be possible for the trany to go directly from any gear to neutral? This has happened on this bike about twice a year, where while during somewhat aggressive acceleration, I will suddenly find the bike in neutral, no connection between the engine and rear wheel and the neutral light on the dash is illuminated and the "N" is displayed on the gear indicator. I can understand it happening between 1st and 2nd if you short stroke the shifter since you are going thru neutral on the way to second. But I have also had this happen when going from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th. I look down and the gear indicator shows "N", the green light is on. There are never any kind of grinding or other strange noises other than a very high engine rpm due to lack of connection to rear wheel. Is this an indicator of some major trany problems coming down the line in my near future, or just a glitch in the system. I am posting because this happened 3 times on the way in to work today. All three today were going from 2nd to 3rd, no drive connection, "N" showing and green light on. Lifting up on the shifter again, and it went into 3rd like it should have done the first time one time it went to 2nd. I may be short stroking the shifter a little since I am getting used to some new riding shoes that are thinner on top that what I had before. but I still did not think there should be a full and indicated neutral between 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th.
  4. For guys that trailer a 2nd gen, where are your strap points on the front of the bike?
  5. Ok, if we are going to try to meet up, we need to give some detailed info on where we are coming from and what our plans are. My hopes at this time are: Leaving Johnson City, Tn at about noon on Thursday the 2nd and ride to Portsmouth, OH up US 23 to spend the night. This would be thru eastern KY. From there, on Friday morning, go up US 23 up to Dayton and hit I71 and up 58 into Oberlin. RandyA
  6. 1987 Venture Royale 30-35K on it. Plastic in good shape. Compressor works but only when jumped with a hot lead (any ideas on this problem?) Picking it up Sunday. Co-worker selling it to me for a good price IMHO. Sat in garage for a lot of years but has been gone through and runs. 1 spark plug fouled out. Can't believe I'm actually considering buying this 1gen being a 2nd gen lover. Any idea what the value actually is via guesstament with info given? I haven't even seen it yet but his description is something I believe.
  7. Seems I need to be able to carry a little one. Any help with a chair that looks good on a 2nd gen, good quality at decent price? Anybody got a used one that needs work? Thanks
  8. After setting the 2nd gen gear set in the 83 engine bottom half, I realized that there was an alignment problem. After I aligned everything, I believe that two of the three forks are exactly where they need to be. the problem is the one that controls 1st and 3rd gear. Yamaha increased the width of the teeth on that gear slide and with the slide not engaged, it made the 1st gear dogs too close and the 3rd gear dogs too far away. The next step would be to get the correct fork and see if that solved the problem. But that was a problem in itself. According to two different dealers, there was not a new fork available anywhere in the US and the only place to get one was Japan. I then went online and checked with any salvage yards and anywhere else that might have a 2nd gen engine that was being parted out. I had just about given up when my son Brian, who had just stopped by, suggested I check my paypal history in trying to find where I had bought the 2nd gen gear set . Not only did I find the purchase, which was Feb 24, 2010, but the purchase had a phone number listed. I called it and not only did I get an answer, but he told me where to look and the forks and tumbler were still available on an ebay - buy it now listing, where I rarely look. The price was $25 with about $12 for shipping and I have already purchased and paid for it. So, now I am in great anticipation on this being a viable option, not only for solving the 83/85 trans problem, but for any 1st genner that wants to upgrade their trans to the slightly wider spaced gearing that the 2nd gens have. For those interested, I will keep you upgraded on how this progresses. RandyA
  9. Does anyone have the Parts # for the EBC REAR brake pads which will fit a 2nd Gen? Thanks in advance.....Boomer
  10. Ok, I have started the tear down of the spare engine that I got when I bought the 85. I was told that this 83 engine had only 30,000 miles on it and after spitting the case, I really do believe it may be true. There is no doubt in my mind that the engine had never been apart since new. One of the first things I wanted to see was what the gear dogs looked like on 2nd gear. I found that they had no noticeable wear at all. That was a good sign. Now, one thing that did surprise me was that the dogs on 2nd gear appeared and measured to be slightly undercut . I knew that later year 1st gens were undercut slightly, but I had never heard the 83's were. But, I have never looked at an 83 that did not already have a problem of being worn. The second issue that does give me some concern is not only did Yamaha change the gear diameters and number of teeth, but they also changed the width of some of the gears, but it appears to be only in the gear teeth area, but not the width where it is on the shaft. In setting the gearsets beside each other, and I am actually comparing an 86 set with the 02 set, you can see the difference. So far it does look like that the gears will line up with the proper fork placement. The next step will be to put the 02 set in place and set the bottom back on with the forks in place and see if it shifts thru the gears ok and see if everything lines up. I really do hope this is a viable option for the 1st gens, not only as a 2nd gear fix, but I want to have wider spaced gear ratios like the 2nd gens have. With also adding the V-Max rearend, 1st and 2nd gear will be slightly lower, 3rd and 4th will be about the same and 5th gear will be higher. On the pictures, you can see where the 2nd gear dogs have no obvious wear and you can also see the difference in the gear widths. The last picture is with the bottom off the 83 engine with the original gears. RandyA
  11. I don't usually post ebay listings on here because I feel if someone is paying attention to a listing on something they want, someone else should not post to the world of others too lazy to keep up with it. But, with the last transmission I picked up from an 86, which is after the correction, and me getting it for $25 plus a little shipping, there does not seem to be a lot of interest. So, I am going to post this and see if anyone is interested as in my mind this is absolutely the best way to fix a 2nd gear problem on an early 1st gen. With this and a few gaskets, I have not doubt you could end your 2nd gear problems forever as this is the way I did it several years ago on my bike. If anyone has any questions, just let me know. 12. I am looking for the shifting forks and drum. I am needing them to put the 2nd gen Venture transmission into my 1st gen. RandyA
  13. Can someone please tell me what the rake is on the 2nd Gen RSV??
  14. I am about to purchase some Dunlop Elite IIIs. This tire comes in a radial I've heard. Is this okay to mount on the 2nd Gen. Venture? What are the pros and cons? Thanks.
  15. I have almost 13K miles on the bike. In the not so distant future, I plan to replace my fule filter since it is cheap preventative maintenance for my bike. I've read about the NAPA 3011 fuel fitler, but not sure if this if for a 1st Gen or 2nd Gen. At any rate, I may opt for an OEM type filter or go for a 'car' fuel filter. What do you guys recommend and the best place to order online?
  16. New member joining. Love the sight, lots of good info. Have 2nd gear going out in my 84 VR. Was wondering if i put an 86 or newer trans in it if it would work without any mods? Also would i need to change out shift drum and forks? Love the bike, would like to fix it. Any members out there that has a trans that they would like to sell me would be great? E-mail me at arwest_11@hotmail.com Thanks for any help you can provide.
  17. OK after my success with installing new springs, with a lot of hand holding from Rick, I am feeling cocky enough to tackle a valve adjustmnet on my 05 RSTD. I have read V7Gooses's excellent write up and every other thread I could find regarding this procedure. My big question is why does this need to be done? What happens if it is not done? I know there are a few of you out there that think this is a big wasted effort. I would like to hear why? Not trying to start another war like over the Dyna Beads or over the car tires just would like some good feedback from everyone. 2nd part: Has anyone actually tried using the suzuki shim tool on their 2nd gen http://pitposse.com/povashto.html or [ame=http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000GTVOC8/ref=asc_df_B000GTVOC8956097/?tag=globa0a-20&creative=380333&creativeASIN=B000GTVOC8&linkCode=asn?tag=citofgamonlco-20]Amazon.com: MOTION PRO SUZ VALVE SHIM TOOL 08-0017: Automotive@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31ljmdffXzL.@@AMEPARAM@@31ljmdffXzL[/ame] ? Found shims at $5.17 ea http://www.z1enterprises.com/catalog.aspx?pid=YPEN1B. Considering buying a few from 2.55 to 2.85. Anyone know a source with better pricing? Are the sizes about what can be expected to replace? Might just borrow the kit from RandyR or another and restock theirs. Just looking at my options! Last but not least I want to wish everyone at this fine site a Blessed Merry Christmas. I am thankful that God has put all of you in my life and I am truly humbled by his signs of Love starting with his son!
  18. Hi everyone, My 2001 RSV is shifting from neutral to 2nd gear most of the time! When I see that it is in 2nd gear, I down shift one time and it will shift to neutral instead of 1st gear most of the time! I have to go back and forth once or twice to get to first gear out of neutral. Has anyone had this issue? What was the fix? Thanks, Steve
  19. Hello everybody, been a while for me here. I was riding my 97 RSTD when I went to down shift coming off the freeway and there was nothing!! I pulled the clutch and coasted to a gas station right off the freeway, where I saw that the linkage had come loose from the tranny! I was able to push it in and got it into 2nd gear to get home with, but I'm not sure what the fix is here. Anyone know? Thanks!
  20. I want to install a wing on my trunk. Does any one know where I can get one. I'm looking for one that has the brake light in it. I need it for a 2nd gen. Thanks, Ken:fingers-crossed-emo
  21. I've decided that I need to make this bike reliable an ddrive it until it burns to the ground. I love my bike and I believe I can make it 100% reliable again. That said, I dont have the time or space to tackle a 2nd gear fix. the yamaha shops locally will do it for $4200.00 plus parts:sick:. I can buy a 86+ for that with low miles! Does anyone know of someone in Michigan that can fix the 2nd gear for a reasonable amount of money and can be trusted?
  22. I emailed Nanci at the link below after seeing a post in the 2nd gen tech section and inquired about making leather lid covers for the 2nd gens. She asked me if I had an old set to use as a base for making these up she could possibly make some sets. I dont but if anyone does have an old set, scuffed, cracked, or whatever and are willing to send it to her maybe she can start making these up. Thanks, Jeff http://www.acehighleathers.com/
  23. Okay we all know about the second gear problem, the washer at the end of the shaft is a metal that gets mashed flat and eventually the bike can't stay in 2nd gear. Here's my problem i can put the bike into 2nd and excellerate as long as I stay below 3500rpms. The bike will continue to excellerate even up to 55 mph. BUT if I try to excellerate faster the tranny pops out of gear then back in a again. It will pop out again if i keep trying to push it but stay in as long as it'd below the 3500 mark. I've talked about this with Skydoc 17 but Earl wasn't sure if this is the normal 2nd gear problem but because its in the second gear I believe it must be related somehow any idea what this might be???
  24. I'm shopping for a cycle I can buy outright and I am considering a 2nd Generation RSV that has a bit over 100,000 miles. It got me to thinking - what is the most miles you have seen on a 2nd Generation RSV?
  25. Do you think these will work with the 2nd gen? http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/3/13/121/35014/ITEM/Avon-Grips-Heated-Air-Cushioned-Metric-Cruiser-Grips.aspx?WT.ac=SLIsearch
