1. Ok, I have started the tear down of the spare engine that I got when I bought the 85. I was told that this 83 engine had only 30,000 miles on it and after spitting the case, I really do believe it may be true. There is no doubt in my mind that the engine had never been apart since new. One of the first things I wanted to see was what the gear dogs looked like on 2nd gear. I found that they had no noticeable wear at all. That was a good sign. Now, one thing that did surprise me was that the dogs on 2nd gear appeared and measured to be slightly undercut . I knew that later year 1st gens were undercut slightly, but I had never heard the 83's were. But, I have never looked at an 83 that did not already have a problem of being worn. The second issue that does give me some concern is not only did Yamaha change the gear diameters and number of teeth, but they also changed the width of some of the gears, but it appears to be only in the gear teeth area, but not the width where it is on the shaft. In setting the gearsets beside each other, and I am actually comparing an 86 set with the 02 set, you can see the difference. So far it does look like that the gears will line up with the proper fork placement. The next step will be to put the 02 set in place and set the bottom back on with the forks in place and see if it shifts thru the gears ok and see if everything lines up. I really do hope this is a viable option for the 1st gens, not only as a 2nd gear fix, but I want to have wider spaced gear ratios like the 2nd gens have. With also adding the V-Max rearend, 1st and 2nd gear will be slightly lower, 3rd and 4th will be about the same and 5th gear will be higher. On the pictures, you can see where the 2nd gear dogs have no obvious wear and you can also see the difference in the gear widths. The last picture is with the bottom off the 83 engine with the original gears. RandyA
2. I have some windshield trim and brown passenger arm rest for 1st gen MK11 (came of an 89). If anybody wants these, email me at sc750virago@charter.net. No charge, if anybody can use them you can have them. Just take all of it, save me 2 trips to the post office, lol. Thanks.
3. hey guys newbie here and first post, i read thru some of the previous posts but didnt find my solution so here goes, just got and 1st 1984 yamaha venture,41k miles, runs like a top,all the carbs were just cleaned and synced, has new plugs also,oh yea and the tank was cleaned while the carbs were off have reciepts for all this work, anyway after it warms up runs great, perfect idle no misses fires up 1st try everytime after warm, but i live in florida so no cold mornings here lol,but every morning i start it up even if im not going out and i have to turn it over a couple times (without choke) then just barely choke it to get it started everytime, and have to warm it up at least 5 minutes before i go,now this isnt the biggest deal in the world but was wondering is it normal? and if not what else is there to check? i mean it runs and idles perfect never a backfire or miss,so im assuming timings good and it just had all that other work, and i put new filter and plugs in myself,so any ideas or should i just live with it? and going to say hi in the welcome section after this but im a 1st time yamaha owner and i luv it,im in st.pete florida, thnx guys for any and all advise
4. Does anyone have a suggestion for making the tank cover not pop out of the front holder on a 1st gen? This has happened a few times and it is a little distracting when it does this. It only does it around 90+ mph. I will help those that have the obvious answer, stay within the speed limit. I know that one, but it cuts into the fun factor. Gary
5. Anyone got any ideas on this 17MM tool for fork cap removal on the 1st gens? http://www.restockit.com/sunex-1-2-drive-hex-impact-socket-17mm-(sun26499).html?source=CJproduct Price seems reasonable, and I wouldn't have to create a frankenstein tool outa parts. I am a mechanical guy who would use thing quite often for other projects too, so it wouldn't be job specific to my 1st gen. Looks worth the purchase to me, unless you guys have other suggestions. Thanks. Rusty
6. Ok....I bought a lift for my '84 yesterday, and other projects, and have been looking at the clearance issue with the pipes. In reading the older threads the general acceptable idea was to simpley lift it by the pipes. Yeah I know, tough stuff, double wall and all that but looking for a better idea. And hockey pucks are NOT in the game plan. In talking with Dano he's onto the same idea I'm looking at as I want it to be one piece and able to slip it under from the front and line up with both frame rails so a "U" shape is interesting. So you 2nd Gen guys have Carbon One and his adaptor........... So any 1st Gen guys out there with a design idea or an adaptor you made? Thanks Mike
7. If 8 fl oz for a M/C is recommended for the 1st time, then would 32 fl oz for a 20 gal tank be recommended for a truck or is that too much for a 1st time. The truck runs fine its just that it is a 1993 and thought a clean up probably be good for it.
8. Is there an adapter that mates a firestickII antenna to the stock 1st gen set up. The firestick antennas have a male stud attachment and so does the antenna mount on the bike........I dont want to do the marshal mod but would love to fix my stock setup. Either that or find a new to me antenna . The top part of mine broke off just above the large round pice where you do the adjustments for the cb section. Thanks in advance David
9. Just thinking. I have a few parts and just want to kind of get a list in my head of what should go where. What would you want?? What I have is: 1. I have a 83 with a new frame. Has good 2nd gear but I think that is on the top of the list. Go ahead and install 86 tranny I have. FJR or V-Max rear. I have a air cleaner set-up with 4 seperate air cleaners to get rid of air box. Maybe help with room for Boost system?? 83 cams 7 Heads v/s V-Max cams & heads?? Garage to do this in!! (I am getting there!!) What would you want for dream 1st Gen?? I already have fastest Venture around:whistling: Got nothing else to do at 3AM.
10. Randya started discussing ratios in the following thread. This was regarding some work he is doing to his bike this winter. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?postid=551974#post551974 I thought I would start a new thread along these lines hoping to give a little better understanding to where all those ratio numbers come from. I confuse easily, so here is same info in a different format. All numbers are from the corresponding bikes service manuals. 1st Gen Ratios (From 1986 Service Manual) Primary reduction 87/49 (1.776) Secondary Reduction- Middle Drive 21/27 (0.778) x Final Drive 33/10 (3.300) -- Total Reduction (2.567) 1st 39/15 (2.600) 2nd 39/22 (1.772) 3rd 31/23 (1.347) 4th 31/29 (1.068) 5th 29/32 (0.906) Royal Star Ratios (From 1996 Service Manual) Primary reduction 85/51 (1.666) Secondary Reduction- Middle Drive 21/27 (0.778) x Final Drive 33/10 (3.300) -- Total Reduction (2.567) 1st 39/16 (2.437) 2nd 30/19 (1.578) 3rd 29/25 (1.160) 4th 29/32 (0.906) 5th 21/28 (0.750) RSV Ratios (From 1999 Service Manual) Primary reduction 87/49 (1.776) Secondary Reduction- Middle Drive 21/27 (0.778) x Final Drive 33/10 (3.300) -- Total Reduction (2.567) 1st 43/17 (2.529) 2nd 31/19 (1.632) 3rd 30/25 (1.200) 4th 24/25 (0.960) 5th 22/28 (0.786) 1st Gen VMax Ratios (From 1995 Service Manual) Primary reduction 87/49 (1.776) Secondary Reduction- Middle Drive 21/27 (0.778) x Final Drive 33/9 (3.667) -- Total Reduction (2.851) 1st 43/17 (2.529) 2nd 39/22 (1.772) 3rd 31/23 (1.347) 4th 28/26 (1.076) 5th 26/28 (0.928) The primary gear reduction is between the crankshaft and the clutch pack. The secondary gear reduction is from the middle drive through the rear axle gear case. All of the gear reductions first list the driven gear # of teeth, followed by the drive gear # of teeth, this ratio is then shown last. For a given comparison between the four bikes listed, the higher the ratio number, the more acceleration & low end power the bike will have. Lower numbers translate into higher speed. This is when comparing the same point in the drive train. In the case of the secondary gear reduction, there are 2 sets of gears. 1st is the middle drive set, followed by the rear axle drive set. The secondary gear sets also accomplish the task of taking the engine/transmission rotation and turning it first 90 degrees to attach to the drive shaft, then 90 degrees again to drive the rear wheel. In the case of the Vmax, the power increase that is often discussed in the rear axle gears. These gears have 9 teeth on the drive gear and 33 teeth on the driven gear. The 1st and 2nd Gen Ventures and the Royal Star all have 10 teeth on the drive gear and 33 teeth on the driven gear. The VMax ratio provides for more acceleration and low end power, but sacrifices top end speed. Three bikes, 1st Gen, RSV & VMax have the same primary gear ratio, and middle gear ratio. The difference is in the transmission & rear axle drive ratios. The Royal Star also has a different primary ratio in addition to the transmission & rear axle drive ratios. What this all translates to as it moves through the drive train is shown next. 1st picture shows inside of clutch housing looking up and forward towards the gear on the end of the crankshaft. Only the back quadrant of the gear can be seen. This gear is on the center line of the drive shaft, on right side. This gear mates to the clutch pack seen in next picture. The clutch pack provides a means of interrupting the flow of power to the transmission. The friction discs in the clutch pack are connected to the outer clutch housing, which has the larger gear seen at the bottom of the clutch pack. The steel plates are attached to the inner clutch boss. When the clutch lever is depressed, these two sets of plates allow the motor to rotate, while the transmission is not turning. The shaft that is in the center of the 1st picture is the main axle shaft of the transmission. The 3rd & 4th pictures are of the transmission assembly. 3rd picture is of a 1st gen main & drive axle assembly. Top is main axle, gears left to right are 5th, 2nd 3rd, 4th, 1st. Bottom is drive axle, gears left to right are Middle Drive gear (Bevel cut, Helical gear), 5th (machined on shaft), 2nd 3rd, 4th, 1st. 4th picture is a cut from the 1st gen VMax service manual showing these in the lower motor case. 5th picture is of rear axle gear case. Drive shaft attaches on left side and drives another set of bevel cut, helical gears. Drive gear is inside case. 6th picture shows driven ring gear. Gary
11. Is there anyone out there refurbishing radios frm 1st generation ventures.
12. When I look at that bike, it sure does seem to make my 28 year old 1st gen look contempory. RandyA
13. I know this was a big deal when I had my old '86 1st Gen, but some of our 2nd Gens are getting 10 + years of age on them. Are we seeing the same issues with the carb diaphragms on these bikes as we did the 1st Gens? If not, why?
14. To Say BAH!! HUMBUG!!!!
15. I am working on a detailed description with drawings on the inner workings of the Anti Dive system and need some help. I have all the spare parts I need except for the inner fork tube. I could use some help from someone that has a disassembled 1st gen fork that could get me some measurements of the tube and maybe a couple of pictures. A partially completed drawing I am working on is shown below. I have even taken a spare outer tube I had and cut it open to get a better view of the cross section. Gary http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/tubelowerassy.jpg http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/ForkAssy.jpg
16. I do believe I would take it all apart and sell every piece if I could get the prices being noted on ebay. I would then buy me another 1st gen, a 2nd gen and pay my house off. I have never sold anything on ebay, so I don't know the particulars, but does it cost anything to list something if it does not sell? I am seeing things like $164 for one mirror off an 87, and we aren't even talking new here. I am also seeing many parts that most just throw or give away because there is so little need for them with outragous prices on them. Normally, when I am surfing Venture parts on ebay, I always go "auction only" and "ending soon". Usually this sorts out most of this stuff, but being bored at lunch here at work and looking at all catagories, I am astounded at what people think they have. And, if thay are not asking rediculously high prices up front, they are wanting extremely high shipping costs. OK, I will quit venting as I did get a TCI last week for an 84/90 1st gen for $16.50 and about $6 shipping. RandyA
17. Lately I have read a number of posts about individuals regretting switching from the 1st Gen Venture to the 2nd Gen Venture. I owned 4 1st Gen Ventures. An 84, an 87, an 84 straight Venture then another 84 Venture Royale. I loved the bike. My wife and I road from Windsor, Ontario to BC on it and other long distance trips as well. Now I am on my second, 2nd generation bike. I came back to it because I enjoy/ed the ride so much. Yes it is a bit top heavy but other than that I can't think of any reason why I would go back to a 1st Gen Venture. I am curious to ask how many people here have come from a 1st Gen and have no regrets? Quite simply, I love my RSV. Chris in Red Deer, AB
18. Saw a nice red 1st gen today on Complex Street in San Diego around 3:30. Anyone from here?
19. sorry every one i fell on some hard times. and have to decide. internet or eat. there going to shut me off on the 12th due to being behind. so for awhile i will be off line. hope to be back by jan 1st or end of the month.
20. Like to mount this on side of my 1st Gen see how many would notice it!! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-Phazer-Venture-Inviter-recoil-pull-starter-/290504862533?pt=Snowmobile_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43a3706b45
21. OK gents, I need to tow my 1st gen VR in a trailer. My sport bike handlebar harness won't reach across the buck-horn bars. What is the recommended method for tie-down?
22. Hello all I obviously am new here as this is my 1st post. I am in the process of purchasing an 07 model. 1st Question: Can anyone tell me the proper pressure for the front and rear shocks? I read the front takes no more than 7 and that 3 is a good place to start but I havent found anything on the rear. The bike has been sitting for a couple of months so I will probable need adjusting. 2nd question: What years are the 1st generation vs the second generations that I see people talking about and what are the differences? 3rd question: Is there a 3rd generation? 4th question: Is there any major issues I should look for or check. the bike has 40,000+ miles. 5th question: Is there a limit as to how many questions I can ask per post? Thanks in advance as I am sure there will be more questions to follow. Tom PS: my presently my other bike is a beautiful 97 Honda Valkyrie Tourer. I recently sold a 06 HD Street Glide. I've also owned a 03 Honda ST1300, a 03 Honda VTX 1300, a Honda 750 ACE, and my 1st bike was a Yahama 400 way back when gas reached $1.00 a gallon. My wife rides a 04 HD Fatboy.
23. And got my other 1st Gen out. Tucked "Brown Sugar" away in Skids garage and got "Ugly" out. Think she was mad at me for ignoring her for the summer. Coughed, farted and burped most of the way home til she got over it and started to run about 1/2 like she should. Guess I'll have to baby her for a while Ain't nothing wrong with having the Two Fastest Ventures in the area!!!
24. Well the 1st Gen found a new home today. I was a little sad to see her go, but Ol' Blue just fits me better. I sold it to my cousin and her husband so she's still in the family. They're stepping up from a cruiser to a touring bike, I think they'll be very happy.
25. How many, like myself, have gone fron the 1st gen to BMW LT ?
