  1. It's a dark day here at the Nelson household. My son Dylan won an Apple IPad II in a raffle. He doesn't have it yet, they are shipping it to him and he is supposed to have it by April 1st. I told him he could keep it but it can't leave his room.
  2. Just sitting here in my Fruit of the Looms doing some thinking. Do my best thinking like this at times. I know you use a CPAP machine as I do. Reading up on it and if you aren't using machine as you should your sleep will still be interrupted at times and these inturruptions can lead to memory loss. I guess you haven't been using your machine as you should. This explains why you have those memory lapses and forget the lesson taught to you about 1st Gens and 2nd Gens. Bringing "Brown Sugar' Down this year and she is faster than "UGLY" I may have to give lessons again in 1st Gen Ed 101.......:rotfl: Be good to see ya Bro!!!
  3. Hi, and thank you in advance. I have been looking for a venture that needed some work as the bike funds are low, and I found an 83 with 50.000 miles on it in really nice shape that ran last year but will not start now. The owner want's $600.00 so I have to get it. Okay the question is, this is the second venture "needing work" that I have looked at that previously ran, but only, or mostly on 3 cylinders. I am well aware of carb issues and air leaks, but I am wondering about the ignition control system as well, is there a common problem that would manifest itself by dropping one cylinder? I know I could do a search, sorry but I am in a time crunch. Thank's for the help, really nice group here!
  4. After reading everything I could find about the clutch basket whine, it seems that I read a viable fix to substantially reduce the basket noise may be in changing the 2nd gen clutch basket to a 1st gen clutch basket? I forget where I saw it, but somewhere I thought I read that one of the 1st gen baskets needs 1st gen clutch parts, while the other uses the 2nd gen clutch parts. I cannot remember if the 1200 or the 1300 1st gen basket could be used with 2nd gen parts. Does anyone know which is which? Just modified my clutch last winter. No change in the whine, but my clutch parts, i.e. plates and pressure plate are in very good shape and I would rather not replace them if I do not have to do that. Thanks.
  5. Anyone ever have issues hooking up your wii/netflix account to the internet wirelessly. When I 1st did it about a year ago the very 1st movie worked flawlessly. Ever since providing I can even connect w/out disconnecting the router power cord and plugging back in, it will literally lose the connection about every 18 minutes. I have tried everything I can think of and have pretty much given up trying to connect to netflix via the wii. I don't think is the router because I don't have this issue w/ the wireless laptop.
  6. While searching I saw some talk of using a 15'' Vmax rear wheel but couldn't find anybody that had actually done it on a 1st Gen. So, can this be done? Has anyone done it? And if so, what's involved?
  7. Unfortunately Lonna and I aren't going to be able to make the International in Cody. Way back when last year I reserved a room there in the hopes that we would be there. I haven't cancelled this reservation yet, but wanted to offer it up to any of our members if they want to have the room. Anyone interested PM me or post on this thread and I'll make sure that when I cancell that we get your name in there. This is a 1st come 1st serve deal, so the 1 responce I get is the one that will get it. If you want to call me my cell is in my profile.
  8. Hey Folks, Just wanted to post up and see if anyone has a decent used windshield for a 1st gen. Perhaps one that was taken off when it was upgraded to a clearview or such. It has to be in good shape, I dont want something all scratched up or cut down, I'm pretty picky on looking through a shield f anyone has a good one laying around that they want to get rid of I'd like to chat with you...Thanks.
  9. Ok been hearing about how all the second genners moved their trunks back to give their passenger a little more room. I was tols that it was already det up just had to move it. Ive been looking for a way to do this on a 1st gen. Looked at moving the trunk itself but dont have the skills to remake the mounts . Then considered moving the trunk rack mount back but it seems that isnt possible as it sets at an angle just behing the back light. Is there anyone out there who has already done this mod to a 1st gen and if so how did you do it? Any help would be appreciated David
  10. Several months ago I added the Stebel electric 130db horns. I wired them thru a relay. I can hear and feel the relay clicking. So 1st looking for the horn fuse. Any thoughts welcome.
  11. I have seen a few BMW K1200LT around and I am intreged because they look like a better type of 1st gen venture. Does anyone have experience riding both of these bikes and tell me what the differences are? Iowa Guy
  12. I haven't been able to find any specific info about the red lens covers that are on the aftermarket chrome trunk wraparound on this '86 I picked up. I'm not sure if they were made by Barons or not, but I think they are. Any of you 1st genners have some info on where to get some new red lenses?
  13. Seems to be a common mod for 1st Gens, I have one on mine; but has anyone seen a need to do this for 2nd gens? Maybe the 1st gen's temp gauge has made us all paranoid OR the 2nds gen's lack thereof had made us all too complacent OR mother Yamaha has done proper engineering and I don't need to worry about it.
  14. Saw a nice 89 1st Gen about 20 miles north of Myrtle Beach yesterday on Hwy 9 anyone from here?
  15. Wondering if anyone here is taking 1st Gen Ventures on lond distance rides... and how long. I see/hear about newer bikes on long rides, but I haven't really of the 1st Gens.
  16. What is the difference between a 1st gen and 2nd gen? Thanks, Allen
  17. It is the air preasure sensor (circled on the parts picture below) used on the 1st gen class air suspension sytem, found on 1983-93 Venture royals
  18. My choke level on my 89 VR moves to the left really, really hard. Any suggestions as to what I might spray into the cable. My 1st guess would be WD 40?
  19. I just bought a pack of 25, 10mm copper crush washers from McMaster Carr. Cost was $7.61 + $4.39 shipping, total of $12.00. McMaster P/N is 97725A200 for 25. If you are going to do brake work and remove the lines, these should be replaced. The items I received looked identical to what is used on bike. I counted 23 of these washers on my 1st gen. The price at partshark.com was $1.38 each + shipping. Total for 23 would be $31.74 before shipping cost Part # is WASHER,PLATE - 90201-10118-00 Same part # is used on 1st & 2nd gens. Gary
  20. Loving my "new to me" 03RSV. One thing that seems to be worse than my 1st Gen is the reaction to cross winds and headwinds. Old paint is relatively unfazed while the RSV seems to be much more at the whim of mother nature. It hasn't been all that windy here, maybe 30mph winds tops. Granted the RSV has all the aerodynamic qualities of a barn door (BTW my profession is in airflow dynamics) compared to the 1st Gen; but the difference on the road is striking. Anyone else notice this or is there something I need to be checking on.
  21. Stumbled upon this 1st Gen on a Norwegian web site. Gotta say that this is the nicest 1st. Gen I have ever seen. Would buy it if I wanted a slower bike than my 1998 Royal Star Tour Classic II The Norwegian price on the other hand is something different. Motorcycles here cost an arm and a leg and the wife and the dog to ! 17.743 US$ is the asking price. They have extremely hefty taxes here on motorcycles. But don´t worry - it will go for that price. Here is the link: http://www.finn.no/finn/mc/used/object?finnkode=26954627 Friendly regards from Iceland (Norway at the moment at work), Jonas
  22. For those few of you that have expressed any interest in the 2nd gen transmission being a viable option in a 1st gen engine, here is a great update. I received the forks and drum today and after doing some measurements on the location of the shifting slot that controls the slider for 1st and 3rd gear, it appears that Yamaha has shifted that slot approximately .080 toward the center of the engine. As noted in the earlier post, that slider was off using the 1st gen drum to the point that the dogs on 1st gear were touching the mating gear slightly and the dogs on the other side of the slider were just barely going into 3rd gear when that gear was engaged. It does appear that the forks themselves are identical. The other change is the tabs that were bent over the end of the pins, the ones that tend to open up and allow the pins to fall out, are no longer there and now it is a machined casting. This is another big improvement in this transmission. After replacing the forks and drum, I set the gearsets in place and it appears everything aligns perfectly and all sliders engage exactly as they should and have the proper clearances when not engaged. All the gears changed perfectly as I went thru the shift pattern. Now, I will gather up all the necessary seals and gaskets to start assembling this thing. I will add some pictures and the last one will be the 2nd gen gearset in place in a 1st gen engine with everything aligning as it should. RandyA

  24. OK I know its been discussed butI cant find specifics. When my taxes come in my wife has gave me permision to get a gps.Limit is in the $300 range. What will be a good gps in this range with bluetooth and mp3 player with an exterior speaker output. I will be getting in touch with buddyrich for a cable hook up that he makes for the 1st gens. This gps will be mostly for the bike but also will pull double duty in the cage when needed. Any ideas will be apreciated. Thanks in advance David
  25. After setting the 2nd gen gear set in the 83 engine bottom half, I realized that there was an alignment problem. After I aligned everything, I believe that two of the three forks are exactly where they need to be. the problem is the one that controls 1st and 3rd gear. Yamaha increased the width of the teeth on that gear slide and with the slide not engaged, it made the 1st gear dogs too close and the 3rd gear dogs too far away. The next step would be to get the correct fork and see if that solved the problem. But that was a problem in itself. According to two different dealers, there was not a new fork available anywhere in the US and the only place to get one was Japan. I then went online and checked with any salvage yards and anywhere else that might have a 2nd gen engine that was being parted out. I had just about given up when my son Brian, who had just stopped by, suggested I check my paypal history in trying to find where I had bought the 2nd gen gear set . Not only did I find the purchase, which was Feb 24, 2010, but the purchase had a phone number listed. I called it and not only did I get an answer, but he told me where to look and the forks and tumbler were still available on an ebay - buy it now listing, where I rarely look. The price was $25 with about $12 for shipping and I have already purchased and paid for it. So, now I am in great anticipation on this being a viable option, not only for solving the 83/85 trans problem, but for any 1st genner that wants to upgrade their trans to the slightly wider spaced gearing that the 2nd gens have. For those interested, I will keep you upgraded on how this progresses. RandyA
