  1. Anyone here come from a 1st gen and then bought a BMW K1200LT Touring bike? I am playing with the idea as you can get them cheap with low miles compared to the Goldwings, plus they are physically smaller. I am eyeballing a 2001 with 20K miles on it for $6500. Do they ride like the 1st gen? I am just looking at about $3500-$4000 to make my 83 100% reliable and fixing 2nd gear as well as forks, etc... and only a little bit more will get me a bike that shops will actually touch, you can actually get parts for, and I will feel comfortable taking on a 1500 mile ride without worrying where the Uhaul rental centers are to get back home. Second Gen is out as I dont like the harley style bikes. They are pretty, just not my style and I dont like forward controls. And I dont have $12,000 for a 10 year old goldwing.
  2. My winter project is going to be building a bobber style venture, with Tweety power, maybe more. Probably be a multiple year process, like Tweety has been. I have most of motor components already, VMax heads, final drive & most of Vboost. 1300 block. I am interested if a 1st gen block will fit in a 2nd gen frame. I don't care about the head bracing, I will compensate for loss of that structure somehow. I like the single frame tube from the neck back style. It would allow me to use a standard tank on bike. Also like the appearance of the rear fender for the Indian look I am after. I am not after a chopper style, but more along a retro look. Single seater with old style sprung seat for one. I want to stay with mono shock set up for better handling. I have two 1st gen bare frames here, but I am not warm & fuzzy with what I would need to do to modify one to get what I am after. Gary
  3. I'm a Electronic Engineer, and have a set of 1st gen radio/intercom parts to "tinker with" on their way to me. In preparation to figure out how these things work and how to fully troubleshoot/ repair them does anyone have any detailed information about the setup? connector pinouts wiring diagrams? etc?? I am hoping to come up with a document to help others keep their radios working and to troubleshoot them. I also have a secret plan to upgrade my 1st gen with a stock radio. I need the space in the fairing for my Ham radio transcever, so the car stereo and it's mount will need to go. Also as a note, if anyone has any dead radio parts they are willing to sell cheap, I am certian I will need more "victims" to be disected on the bench. I might be able to find a common failure point if I go through enough of them.
  4. Around 2:30 pm saw a really nice looking Blonde 1st Gen MKII cross the Puyallup River heading to the Old Canery. Was wondering if it was someone from this group.
  5. Drove past a blue 1st gen at the intersection of Greenbay and Waukegan roads near thw Waukegan Il airport at about 6:00 tonight. Anyone from the forums?
  6. Rode my 1st gen to work today, i'ts first long ride and noticed a load whine every time i got off the gas. Fast or slow clutch in or out. Sounds like i'ts coming from the left side. The bike runs and shifts very good except for this whine. Goes away while on the gas. Anybody had this issuse?
  7. A guy I know is selling this '82 Wing Interstate, and I thought some of you more knowledgeable 1st gen guys would like to see it. It's a sweet little ride, but I have no idea if it's worth what he's asking. Just curious. http://atlanta.craigslist.org/wat/mcy/3220528461.html
  8. I found a baby 1st gen parked outside a store today. I had never seen one before. It turned out to be a Yamaha Vision. I googled the model and it is a 550 V-twin. But it sure lookd like a V-4 with two pipes coming off the front cylinder. I didn't examine it closely. Nice looking bike. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamaha_XZ_550
  9. I ride a 2007 RSTD. Bought it new and have loved the bike so far. My wife and I have been to several states enjoying this bike, and I am completely in love with the V4. Having said that, I have this constant thought in the back of my mind that I would like to get a full dresser. While I know I could buy a newer or new model Venture and be fine, I wonder if I should just spend a a considerably less amount and get a good low mileage clean maybe 2000 to 2007 model one. When I look at these bikes on the used market, they look like there is no difference, other than color, than the new ones. So, the reasoning is, why would I buy a newer year model when I could save quite a bit of money and get the exact same bike just a few years older. Is there something I don't know? Do the earlier 2nd Gen model years have less HP and Torque, or is there some kind of bug in the earlier ones that has been corrected since then? I don't want to get into a situation of buying a bike that has less performance than my RSTD does. Okay, here's the second part of this question. Is there a huge performance difference between the 1st Gens and 2nd Gens? I'm not completely sure I would consider a bike with the years on it that a 1st Gen would have, but I ran across a 1993 1st Gen yesterday here locally that is in pristine condition with 31K miles, and the guy said even though he loves the bike, he would probably take $3000-$3200 for it if I wanted to buy it. The 1st Gens just look more aggressive. They look like they would be a better performing bike in the turns and such. I know that I could just end the whole discussion by going and buying a brand new bike. I've test ridden several nice bikes (Victory CCT, Victory Vision, Kawi Voyager, GW, BMW 1600 GTL, Etc). I have the funding to go that route, but something just tells me to buy an older but very good bike and save the duckets. Plus I love the V4. Let the opinions and suggestions begin. Thanks, Lynn
  10. due to all the aches and pains ridding the 1st gen during the Asheville rally I decided it was time to upgrade .So yesterday I did just that.It is silver in color with CD player, navigation system, and it will run off and leave a 1st gen with ease.It also has a REVERSE gear.Pictures to come later.By the way I did have it up to 130 mph today and it had a lot left in it
  11. I thought that all 1st Gen Choke Switch are all the same. Located at the bottom of the switch housing. What years are between Switch Housing and the hand Grip?
  12. Getting closer to winter and I have been mulling over the idea of fitting a set of ABS brakes to Tweety for its annual winter upgrade. Not as far fetched as it may seem. The technology is out there and proven. It is just a matter of integrating an existing system onto a 1st gen Venture. Then there is that little testing issue, but that comes later. Mounting the rotational sensors seems like a relatively straight forward target. When I put the VMax wheel on the front I had to put spacers on each side due to narrower hub, so the front end is easy, the rear would be a tad more of a challenge. Finding room for the control unit seems possible in one of the fairing pockets. Then it would come down to plumbing in the lines, which should be relativity simple given the custom made stainless lines available. There are ABS controllers available at Pinwall scrappers now & then. Does anyone have any technical info on the inner workings of a MC system? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-lock_braking_system Gary
  13. what is the best product to fix cracked plastic parts on a 1st gen
  14. do they make a wider rim that will fit the 1st gens i will be getting a 1st gen hopefuly by next week and was wondering? i like wider tires on the rear just a comfort thing gives me peace of mind knowing i have more ruber on the ground just thought i would ask
  15. Hi all; Wondering if any members are close to Imperial Beach/San Diego CA that could run by and check out a 1st Gen ? I have a friend that is interested in one and though I have volunteered to drive over with my trailer to pick it up with him, it would be good if somebody familiar with 1st Gens could just see if it is what the owner/seller claims. So..???
  16. My 2007 RSV is leaking gas (a huge understatement) from the front of the bike after sitting up for a while. I had surgery on my knee last year around June 1st and could not ride till March of this year. I had another surgery this June 1st and it went much better than the previous one. Anyway, I started the bike last month as I try to start it once every month or 2 when it sits up, with no problem. I went out today to start it up, it started, but gas came pouring out. I can't be sure where exactly, but it shouldn't be a freeze plug as the winter here was very mild this year and I had ridden since. I am not really handy with tools and am planning on bringing it to the shop, but wanted to have an idea as to what I was looking at having done. TIA Joe:bighug:
  17. Saw another red 1st gen here in Brampton this morning on Queen St...wondering if it's a forum member?
  18. what I learned is I have a LOT to learn....waited on a # of ppl, at times felt as tho I was at grand central station. But all in all as first days go it was good.Seems every person that called or came in wanted a RANGER (utility vehicle) .. but I'm still waiting on my 1st sell ... lol
  19. Ok, before I hit the fleaBay curcuit again I know some of you are parting out some 1st gens. I find myself in need of at least one, if not both of the jointed mounting studs that tie the signal housings to the fender stays. I don't need the entire signal body, just the long angled stud that runs through it with the rubber joint and the short stud to the stay. But if the price is right for the whole assembly that will do to. Found why mine started wiggling so bad. The rubbers joints are breaking up. Let me know, Thanks, Mike
  20. I couldn't find the thread where somebody was looking for the turn signal flasher.
  21. I've put a few hundred miles on my '83 VR but I'm really haven't built my trust in the bike yet. It sat for several years before I got it and I don't know anything about its history. I spent almost a year working on it in my spare time just to get it running. It's very easy to start. It idles fairly smooth and runs really smooth. But something just doesn't seem exactly right when riding it. I really can't put my finger on what isn't right, but it just feels a little off. What I'm looking for is someone with a 1st Gen., preferably and '83 model that lives near Henry County Tennesse. I would like someone to ride my motorcycle and tell if it is running like a 1st Gen is suposed to. I really enjoy riding it but until I can build trust in it, I'm afraid to wander too far from home. Do we have any 1st gen members that live near here?
  22. looking to purchase 1st gen venture near east tn. ty
  23. Since I never had the chance to really carry it, and finished to purchased one this is the big detail I forget on this: HOW HEAVY IS THE 2ND GEN IN COMPARATION WITH THE 1ST GEN? I know that is much heavier than my 1997 RS, but don't know the difference.
  24. One of our members, sgn, bought my 99 today.Sad to see it go but I believe it went to a good home. Now if I can get rid of these two 1st gens and the trailer we will almost be ready to hit the road.
  25. I have a question since I'm on the migration from 1st Gen to 2nd Gen: Are the headsets from the 1st Gen working on the 2nd Gen? or I need to purchase new ones? What about the J&M for the 2003? Thanks, :confused24:
