  1. I really must apologize for the 1st pinout drawing that I provided as I was checking out the pinouts today and when I compared them to an opened TCI I found that some of the pins didn't match the colorized electrical schematic I have. Some of the coil numbers were incorrect so I have taken them off the pinout drawing until I have a chance to trace them on my bike which is a 1985 1st Gen 1200. You can all shoot me later. Regards DonB PS if anyone wants a larger version then email me at donb@mnsi.net
  2. i found out yamaha made a bra for 1st gens and i should have one by the 1st of the week
  3. Just curious, who had the 1st gen with the gorgeous Eagle etching on their windshield of their 1st gen at Ft. Collins this year? I am looking to have something similar done on mine as my painter - who is also doing windshied etching now - is out in my area this week - but didn't want to copy what I saw in Ft. Collins. My picture only turned out so so, and was hoping to get a better picture to show Sue and give her an idea of what I want.
  4. Anyone got a good rear brake rotor for an 84 Venture? I have a pulsing in the pedal operated brakes and last night removed the side bag and the rear rotor is warped. I guess the caliper must be sticking so it looks like I'll be rebuilding the brakes this winter. Thanks
  5. Hello all Well I've been working on making a bench tester for the 1st Gen TCI's and I could use the cables/plugs that go to the TCI. Has anyone parted out a 1st Gen bike where I could get these cables? It would simplify hooking up a TCI if I had these. DonB I can be reached at donb@mnsi.net TIA
  6. What is a good choice for a good quality oil filter for a 1st Gen venture that is NOT from a dealer. I'm an hour away from dealer. Wally's #? Purolator #? Other... I just changed oil, but used my last filter & need to get a few. I use synthetic 20-50.
  7. Them there 1st Gen'rs are awful quiet here lately . Could it be the Dark Side taking over or retirement time on the old EGO-maniacs ? Did their "Ride-On"done rode off and left them behind ? Or could it be another embarrassing post on how they lost another vent on the side of the road ? What your excuse this time ? :rotf::stirthepot::stirthepot: BEER30
  8. Saw this on eBay. If I had the $ I'd buy it now!!! Forget that the mileage is so low... it's an 85 with serial number 1617. Ya know what that means?? Well according to this thread: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=7977&highlight=serial It means no 2nd gear issue. An early 1st gen, with less than 10K, garaged, 1 owner and not susceptible to the 2nd gear issue... PRICELESS! See it here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=017&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=270169759194&rd=1 Hope someone here gets it!
  9. What brand oil filter do you use on your 1st generation venture, Mine does not have the spin and I've heard alot of bad things about the fram's filters. Do you have any part#s to pass along?
  10. I'm looking to buy an older Venture, most likely 1st generation as the prices seem right for my budget. I've just learned about the 2nd gear problems and come to accept the fact that I may have to fix this on my future bike. Now I'm hearing about the frames rusting and breaking in half...Makes me a little nervous to say the least. How common is this rust problem, and am I mistaken in assuming California bikes may not be as prone to it with the weather we have? How do I check it (can I?) before paying good money for a bike that's about to split...? Thanks, John
  11. Ok folks who knows what the gear ratio is for the 2nd gen differentials? What's the 1st gen and V-max ratios too for that matter? Larry
  12. I think that this has been posted before but I can't find the answer by searching. Question is: does the 1st gen have 4 piston calipers? If I remember correctly Rick Butler made the switch, but I can't find the thread.
  13. my lower case whines at 3000rpm , it do's not make a dif. what gear it is in . is it a 1st gen thing ? thom
  14. ok i know my bike still isn't running great yet but i was kinda curious at what RPMs you all are at when your leaving a stop? my bike seems to want to try and stall if i'm under 3500 rpms. just want to know if this is way off from what everyone ellse has to do with there 1st gen
  15. Does anyone have a link to a post (anywhere) that details the process of replacing/repairing the diaphrams (with pics) on a 1st gen?
  16. Is there a difference in the height of 1st gen centerstands? I've examined two now and they're not the same, so I guess the answer is yes. But what years have what heights? One I've seen is marked "'86", and the other one is not marked for year at all. The '86 one is shorter than the unmarked one. Otherwise they are styled exactly the same. Was anyone else aware of this height difference? Maybe this is why some were unhappy with the centerstand operation when mounted on a 2nd gen. Could some of you 1st gen owners measure the distance between the ground and the mounting bolt axis of the stand on your bikes and post it, along with what year you have? I'd appreciate it. TIA.
  17. Is it possible to remove and install the rear head of a 1st gen 1200 without removing the engine from the frame?
  18. For those who have not met me (well, I haven't been exactly over-active) my name is Charlie (yep, another one). Anyway I bought a new 06 Midnight Venture last spring, and I am loving it, except that I find it a bit too much to handle when loaded 2-up. I am 68, beed riding since I was 14, but now the old legs seem to object trying to balance over a thousand pounds of motorcycle, so as I see it my only SAFE options are to sell Midnight or trike it. Well, I had the bike out for a ride today and now the answer is obvious: anything but sell the bike! I have been in contact with Tri-Wing and I'm pretty well sold on their kits, but I would like some opinions, like, am I biting off too much to chew by planning to do it myself? How much time does it take? Are there any special skills/tools required? I should also mention I am planning to retire in June or July (second time) so obviously finances are a consideration. But the bottom line is, I am JUST NOT READY TO GIVE UP MY MOTORCYCLE! By the way, I had a 1st Gen, an '87 that I bought new in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I sold it here in Raleigh in 1998 here in Raleigh, NC where we live now. And NO, I will NOT enter into the 1st Gen vs. 2nd Gen fracus! I loved my 1st Gen, and I love my Midnight! Thanks in advance for any advice/help/warnings. Charlie
  19. Thanks to GeorgeS for this excellent article. NOTE: These pictures give you a good overview of the workings of the speedometer. You do not necessarily have to tear yours down to this extent to lubricate it. 1ST Gen Speedometer Photos I just read thru this thread, and just happen to have a , spare 1St Gen, Speedo in the cabinet , Right Here, at my the computer station: ( And a Camera !!! ) So, I took some photo's, that might be helpful to those who have the noise, and have not had the speedo removed. The Idea of blowing light lubricant up the cable housing caught my attention!! So I took these photo's this will show where the Lubricant is needed, Left to right: ---1st photo, shows frontal view of unit: ---2nd photo, shows rear view of unit: ---3rd photo, shows left side view, you can see the shafts driving Odometer: ---4th photo, shows the Point Where Lubrication is needed !!!! So, if you blow a light oil up through the cable Sheathing with the cable remove, useing compressed air, the Lubricant would get to where the Red Pen Is pointing, and where its needed. ---5th photo, With Red Pen, Indicating the Rotating Magnet ( I put one black line for identification ) ( at least I think its a magnet ) This rotates at the speed of the Input mechanical cable. ---- 6th Photo: Pointing to the Outer Pickup, this Only Moves as many Degrees Of Rotation, as the Indicator Needle moves. ( So this could not be the source of the loud noise ) ( This is marked with Two Black marker lines, in the 5th photo for identification ) Also, for those with 1st Gens that have never lubed their Speedo, Simply Remove the headlight assembly, you can reach up and Remove the Outer Speedo Cable Sheeth, from the threads shown in my photo's and with a long tipped Oil can, or WD-40 can its very Easy to apply some lubrication to this point. Anyway, after examining my spare unit, I can't see anything else that could cause the Loud Screech, would Almost have to be coming from this point. Unless its the cable itself. As to the speedo cable itself, I use heavy grease on mine, and Also shoot WD-40 with the grease, and lube it often, usually every year, whether it needs it or not.
  20. Has anyone had this applied to thier RSV? I brought the fairing, lowers, side triunks, and the top of the back trunk to a guy in my area to have it applied as a custom job. I bought the bike last Aug and had it exactly 2 days when the 1st scratch appeared, followed by 2 more in as many weeks. Thanks All for your input!
  21. Does anyone know if gears from a Royal Star or 2nd Gen are interchangeable with a 1st Gen? Looking to use a 5th gear and pinion out of a Royal Star or 2nd Gen as an overdrive for a 1st Gen.
  22. Okay, for those folks that feel that uncontrollable urge to add chrome and other accessories to their 2d gen scoots to feel better about being out classed by the 1st gens. In the lower right corner of the home page there is a link titled.. Free Goldwing Accessories...... Click on this link. You will find a section for Yamaha accessories. One interesting piece is an eagle head with lighted eyes for the front fender. Price ain't that bad either..... And Blusees, they also have accessories for your 750. Nothing for the 1st Gens. Guess they also realize that we don't need anything else.............
  23. Does anyone know what heights 1st Gen windshields came in?
  24. Alright folks, I know you've all scoured the internet for parts for your bikes. Lots of 'em hard to find, most of 'em you get outbid at the last second, sometimes even costing you more than the bike did by the time the auctions are over. Well, I just found this ebay store that I think may get a lot of you excited. http://stores.ebay.com/PinWall-Cycle-Parts-Inc_Yamaha-Venture-Royal-Star_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ4QQftidZ2QQtZkm 704 Items. 24 pages of 1st and 2nd gen parts and accessories. ALL OF THEM WITH BUY IT NOW!!! And from looking at the prices, looks like some really good deals. About the only items I didn't find on there were trailer hitches and Carbs. It looks like these guys are based out of Ohio too, so maybe if we ask nicely we can get Don to take that nice new trailer he got and pick up parts for us.
